Double your fun?

It won't let me delete the first one, just flagged it.

don't really understand what you're asking for. UI elements/documentation? tags? content?

a) Tag synonyms b) Change all words/phrases (content), like "interesting tags" to "favorite tags" (this is the step that takes work).
I would have hoped they'd have changed the UI and FAQ stuff already, but I didn't check.

in user-generated content? are you serious?

Hey, we're programmers, we can do anything.
First, you take care of the low hanging fruit, then deal with the rest.

12:17 AM
yeah, that's a clbuttic quote there...

With over 4000 questions with the words Interesting and Tags, I can't edit them all myself. I need some automation.
It was a bad idea to change them in the first place, but if they're going to go there, then they should finish the job.

12:56 AM
heh

I thought the name change was a bit random, personally, but I don't see it bringing on a tidal wave of confusion. I suppose fixing up the tags might not be a bad idea, though.

it's hard looking past the vitriol to see what he actually is requesting most of the time
perhaps vitriol is too strong

I mean, we could have @RebeccaChernoff go update all of the screenshots people have ever posted with "Interesting Tag" pixel-by-pixel in Paint, but I suspect she's not down with that.

you...are a smart cookie.

@RebeccaChernoff He's really just a tim stone.

1:01 AM
@TimStone who changed names?

Yes, and not a TimeStone. With the autocomplete I am amazed at how many people make that mistake.
@jcolebrand Interesting Tags became Favo(u)rite Tags

oh, pfft

To answer your follow-up question that I'm making up, yes, that happened a while ago and no one has been severely harmed by this since.

I'm engaging on that question, and I don't know why.

snap, I was about to attempt to resummon you to chat
Lance is being serious in that request, he doesn't see the downside

1:03 AM
Oh, I'm summoned to chat every time @MichaelMrozek's around.

@MichaelPetrotta Heh, I noticed that.

Now see, I'm assuming he's just trying to make a point about the original change.
I can't imagine he doesn't see the tradeoff, but maybe.

Hey, what you guys think about this idea? meta.stackoverflow.com/q/95980/147423

random had an opinion...
I wouldn't mind seeing something to alleviate all those "I can't comment, so..." answers.

Wasn't someone talking about a comment queue not too long ago? Hmm...I remember having this discussion.

1:07 AM
"salt"?

haha, all other questions talked about reducing the rep and posting a comment directly

Anyway, my take on it is that 90% of what people comment because they couldn't comment should just not be said, but that's just my experience.

I though of the approval system that exist for edits

@Tim, fair point. Doesn't stop those noise answers, though.

I've seen a lot of flagged answers that are comments.

1:09 AM
Accept queue for new answerers?

Yeah, but the system seems to do a reasonably good job of nuking those from orbit.

@BrunoLM I think it sucks.

Ultimately, there are some user bugs that you can't hack around, so where you draw the line on trying is a tricky decision.

by "system", you mean "3k+ users".

nods

1:10 AM
@TimStone this.

So, eh, what's the difference between 'found duplicate post/s xxx' and 'exact duplicate of xxx' flags?
Is one of them from some sort of automated system?

think so, yep

found duplicate post/s is automated

the former is, yes

think the former may factor in the posting user
as in, look at dupes from the same user

boo facebook required login

@MichaelPetrotta same here
I did not sign up an account on their site, remarkably enough ;)

It's aliiive.

It's HOT.

Oooh,

1:27 AM
Squash it!

@TimStone self inflicted no less

I have to figure out in which way to blame balpha first. :P

ooooh can I help? q:

@RebeccaChernoff can you spin the wheel?

@rchern Sure, blame balpha! :)

1:29 AM
@RebeccaChernoff You can approve this edit :p

@RebeccaChernoff that would have been funnier if it was june 21

Oh wait, the bug is in the preview and server side code?

@TimStone hmmm?

what's the bug?

yarr, which bug?

1:30 AM
@jcolebrand I don't think I get why?

@RebeccaChernoff it was about 24 hours ago
right? today's june 21, 2011 and the time locally is almost 8:33
like if he had just known ... you were wanting to blame .. him ...
/me /lurks

smiles and nods and goes back to blaming balpha

@RebeccaChernoff The <-- thumbnail: http:// comment bit is broken

just the thumbnail one or all of the special comments?

wow, even with snark I get upvotes ...

1:33 AM
It seems to just be that one

Nah, I'm on it ;)

I don't get to yell? ):

You can yell too?

Thanks for opinions earlier about comments. Shog9 end up showing me why that is not a solution and that doesn't aggregate business value. I guess I will make the comment in a user behalf if I think its legit...

Wait, now in my bug report it magically fixed itself in the rendered version.

It's already been fixed while I was writing the report? :p

1:48 AM
mmm, hasn't been a build in a while
and by a while, I mean earlier tonight.

Meta is ahead of StackApps by a few builds it looks like? But the issue still exists in the preview, so I can't imagine it was only fixed server-side.
Ah ha
The server-side bug requires moar specific circumstances.
A comment with URL followed by a comment followed by a comment

yawns Looks fun too debug too, but right now I need to go take a quick nap or something, heh.

2:04 AM
What's this? @TimStone going to bed early?

Oh, no, just resting momentarily so I can wake back up and work through the night. Good stuff.

2:23 AM

@YiJiang double text shadow all the way... whoa.. what does this mean?

4:04 AM
@TimStone Wow it sure looks like it, but it only came up once for a little bit when I was on a non-so site... hmmm It was at work, I'll check tomorrow.

1 hour later…
5:10 AM
That ended up being a slightly longer nap than expected. Ah well.
\o/

@TimStone Yatta!
@TimStone where did you pull this from?
Also, why am I not at home and in bed?

It's still in Meta's side bar, heh.
Good question!

@TimStone oh, haha, good point
@TimStone and yet it remains unanswered

stop breaking things, @TimStone
also, thanks for fixing the stackapps image :)

Heheh ;)

hmm I see

Morning.

Good morning

argh
I should stop trying to reproduce stuff on production and on my local version at the same time

Huh?

@Manjot Yes?

@OctavianDamiean What happen?

The Wheel says @MarcGravell. I assume he caused something by the way of the butterfly effect to cause storms in the US. I shall now also use the same theory to place blame on him for the typhoon that may or may not cause my flight tonight to be cancelled.

5:39 AM
Nothing, just woke up and yawned.

@YiJiang Well, if the Wheel says it's true...

@TimStone Marc passed wind, thereby causing a typhoon. Totally true.

Confirmed
Let's hope I lay off the chilli tonight, eh?

Hahah shakes head

hello, Marc.
what do you think about pull [tag:wrappers] (19) into [tag:wrapper] (486) ?

5:51 AM
@TimStone Well, the fact that those comments were working until recently was actually a bug hiding another bug. Too bad I fixed one of the two...

which site? I'm thinking "music" and a typo to

@balpha Ah ha! Well, progress right? ;)

@abatishchev you don't get formatting in multi-line messages

@abatishchev Thou shall not
have formatting on *multi-line* messages. Sayth @balpha.

6 messages moved to Sandbox

5:54 AM
thanks

actually, Thou shall not write multi-line messages, if you ask me

@MarcGravell take a look please on my tag suggestion
@balpha 1 line per message? ok

and again: which site?
we have many, and meta is a bit universal

@abatishchev you're free to do more, but it's kinda discouraged (unless you post a block of text etc.)

@MarcGravell SO
sorry missed your question
thought that meta.SO.com is SO's meta, isn't it?

5:57 AM
This sort of
random just
multiline message
is bad mkay?
// multiline code messages are ok.
var myWidget = WidgetFactory.CreateMoarWidgets(widgetPieces);
foreach (var w in myWidget){
  Console.WriteLine(w);
}

@jcolebrand It's not if it's in the form of a haiku

@jcolebrand ok, i see

@abatishchev Meta Stack Overflow is the meta for Stack Overflow
@YiJiang that would not be random, yes?

@abatishchev it is, but it also serves as a catch-all for wider things. I'll take a look.

@jcolebrand Honestly, someone posting a haiku would throw me off, even in here.

5:59 AM
It being 1am, and my still being at the office, I'm going to close up shop now and go home and pretend to sleep
@TimStone meh, I would like to see some relevant haikus

@MarcGravell thanks!

I'll pick up where you left off and start working.
(on something completely unrelated, but in spirit!)

Yatta!
Unless I have just managed to piss off Chrome, there is a gargantuan storm rolling across texas
holy crap, like most of the country about 600 miles out from rchern in all directions

Oh wow, you're right

see how it seems to be circular centered over lower MO?
@RebeccaChernoff who pissed you off so bad you're doing a saiyan attack with the rain?
hmmm
Flood Warning

The Flood Warning continues for
the Mississippi River at St. Louis

* Flood stage is 30.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring.

6:03 AM
@jcolebrand Hahah

We should all try
To write all our messages
In the form of haikus.
(Except I'm horrible at this syllable counting thing and can't get haikus right)

@jcolebrand heh
It went south of here. It just got dark here but the storm itself missed us.

@RebeccaChernoff in light of the flooding does that affect you?

15 mins ago, by Marc Gravell
Let's hope I lay off the chilli tonight, eh?

@YiJiang haikus are just as much about nature as they are about form
it's not just the syllables that apply

6:06 AM
Well, traditional Japanese ones are, but doesn't the word in modern times simply apply to poems following the 5/7/5 form?

this is not me leaving yet.
<-- is leaving now, promise

G'night

6:43 AM
@abatishchev all done

@MarcGravell thank you, Marc!
btw, what is Happy Hour?

This is a "Tavern", so we have Happy Hour
In reality, it's just a notification bar that appears at the top of the screen on Friday, but.

i see :))

The weather outside is cycling between heavy downpour and cloudy every 15-30 mins. Typhoons sure make for weird weather, hmmm...

in Dallas it was 104 yesturday
in Moscow - 2 times less

I propose, since this is a international site, that all temperatures be reported in Kelvins from now on.

today it is going to be 303.15 K

what percent of Americans can re-calculate C in F?
Russians who can F in C - are called scientists :) or science-calc users

Using Fahrenheit is silly anyway.

i just now that 100F is terrible
*the only one temperature value in F i know

It's supposed to be 31°C tomorrow, meh. :/

7:01 AM
@abatishchev Only slightly higher than the body's normal temperature, that's how I remembered it.
Oh, and water freees at somewhere vaguely around 30 or something. I think.

7:14 AM

I've done that so many times that clearly it should intentionally fix it for me. :P
How the hell can Firefox 5 be considered a "security and stability update"?
"Alright guys, to catch up to Chrome, every build is a major build."

btw, why FF 5.0 just after FF 4.0? why not 4.1, 4.5, what-ever

7:34 AM
hah - Classic Indianisms - this is so true

7:46 AM
:D
> I am here only.
What exactly does that mean?
It is an Indianism

Like "I can only be in one place at the same time"?

I'm not sure if that is the meaning.

It's porbably something completely different and irrelevant, but that's what I would take from it.

Yea, I mean your interpretation makes sense. I'd understand the same thing but I've seen it being used in all kinds of contexts.

8:17 AM
I am here only, no.
@tombull89 fwiw that's literal translation of "I'm here" from Hindi to English @Oct

Oh I see, thanks.

hmm, found an interesting bug in Suggested edits

@Sathya Do tell

the suggested edits review page shows the user who proposed the edit as anonymous

So hang on, all those anon. edits aren't actually anon. edits?

8:23 AM
nope.
there was a sudden spike in anon edits fixing the posts. I approved one of those, and the approved page shows right user who proposed the edit

Makes sense, time to spin the wheel

heh, 96000th post is my bug report

Q: Suggested edits Review page shows the user who proposed the edit as Anonymous user

SathyaThe past few hours or so, I've seen a huge spike in proposed suggested edits by Anonymous users correcting the grammar & actually fixing the posts. : Going by past trends, this isn't... right. After approving the edit, taking a look at the permalink of the edit suggestion shows the actual ...

I so want the general reference close reason on Stack Overflow.

@OctavianDamiean me too.

What is that exactly?

I've just read that
Comment of revision : question enhanced

10:23 AM
Converted to english, haha.

Edits from other user are cool
but the OP made it worst :D

@tombull89 heh, classy edit summary

already saw that
but really nice yeah

ouh, we have a community manager :)

10:35 AM
@OctavianDamiean We've had one for pretty long, Robert has been in that job since, I don't know when. So is @RebeccaChernoff.

I meant to say a new one actually. :D
I wish there would be a zsync download for the data dumps.

17 mod-rewrite × 56
Answered 57 non-wiki questions with a total score of 17.
Makes me feel sad ...

sadly there is no zsync client for Windows so that will never happen :(

zsync?

@Mvy I only recently got the bronze tag badge for that, heh.

10:43 AM
mod-rewrite @TimStone?
Oh yeah beautiful!

Yeah. Only Gumbo and I have it right now, it seems.

Nobody answer 100 questions under this :D

So given the fact that the average maximum upvotes on mod-rewrite tags is 1

gr8

10:46 AM
@Mvy zsync is a pretty kick-ass file transfer system. Basically you get a file or a collection of files once and then you just update what changed, never get the entire thing again.

well what's different from rsync?
@Mvy zsync uses the rsync algorithm, but runs it on the client side
nevermind

rsync is for host-to-host file transfer where zsync uses the rsync algorithm but for a distributed transfer model.
yup
It would be awesome to have but unfortunately there is no Windows client.

Rsync has a windows client if I remember

Anyone into Windows application development with enough spare time?

so it just needs the wrapper I guess
Well time to eat

10:49 AM
I'm not sure if it would be that simple :(

@OctavianDamiean Be optimistic :P
Whhhat the SE podcast was yesterday??
T_T

Isn't it always Tuesdays?

Thought it was wednesday

It was only Wednesday last week due to a scheduling conflict.

Crap
Well... I guess I have to wait for the podcast to be on soundcloud ...

10:54 AM
I think we should ask Jon Skeet if he wants to write a zsync Windows client in his 10 minute break.

... hungry. BRB
LOL @OctavianDamiean

@tombull89 but I am having only this version and no updates available :(

Thank you :)
Wow

11:42 AM
Big change from v3?

Nokia launches N9 smartphones..

Are they going to be moving to Android or staying on Symbian?

@tombull89 They're moving to Windows Mobile, and I think the N9 carries Meego

Meego?

ah, I remember a MS/Nokia partnership being announced.

11:46 AM
Is it so?
Symbian will be off now.

@Manjot MeeGo!

Which language will support MeeGo?
In terms of Development.

12:08 PM
@Manjot C++

Qt 'n stuff
A bummer that they dropped MeeGo

What are they now being picked for N9

Maemo is the new MeeGo right, @Oct?

Isn't Maemo just a sub-thingy of MeeGo?
I'm not that familiar with Maemos history to be honest.

that's what.. I'm not clear on that - goes to wiki

12:17 PM
Why is there a "share this answer on twitter"

On stackexchange
prog.stackexchange

> it was announced that the Maemo project would be merging with Moblin to create the MeeGo mobile software platform.

It's got some kind of social media tie in bullshit

@Raynos that comes.. once a while
IIRC, it comes if there has been no (upvoted?) answers

12:19 PM
Isn't only on non SO sites?

Here's an interesting observation: Why is it that when I submit an edit, sometimes the 'edited by someone else' warning will appear when I submit the edit even if nobody edited it while I was editing?
Obviously the interface should not be warning me of someone else editing if that someone else is myself!

Because it hates you. :(
I've had that happen a few times actually, I think.

I don't know, the only thing I know is that this message or situation pisses me off.

@TimStone This calls for a @RebeccaChernoff D:

12:24 PM
And there we have Marc flying in. Hello Marc! :)

Eh, how do you tag question about the faq page but are not actually community

Uh, no, on Meta SO.

Hmm, good question. There's and and

Oh I suck. :(

12:28 PM
Subtle warning, huh...

Heh

time to step out of work. be back later. Cheers

@YiJiang why did you reject stackoverflow.com/suggested-edits/64508, then went to implement the suggestion anyway in the answer?
I would've hit improve, not reject.

@badpssockpuppet Because to improve the post my way I would've to delete all his additions?

12:32 PM
You did accept the meat of the suggestion however

12:54 PM
@YiJiang This is a good candidate for a new website passive-aggressive-so-edits.com

@YiJiang hahahaha

1:12 PM
Yee Haw!

Hummm
mug.isEmpty() ?
can't read very well
oh wait...

Courier cost is high :(

if (owner.isCoding() && mug.isEmpty())
{ mug.fill('coffee'); }

Ditto

A: What types of Stack Overflow schwag would you like to see?

gnostradamusOK, how about a serious one... A coffee mug with the SO logo on one side and this on the other: if (owner.isCoding() && mug.isEmpty()){ mug.fill('coffee'); }

1:15 PM
I guess that would be JavaScript

coffeescript :)

Ok, time to start a meta topic on , why SO mugs are using this creepy indentation style :D

Might be to get a feel while coding with having Cup of Coffee :D

agreed @mvy

Hmm, while(true) { mug.fill('coffee'); } would probably throw a CoffeeOverflowException then?

1:17 PM
No, a MugOverflowException

yea I was thinking.

humm. should we alias mug.stackoverflow.com to this chat room?

1:53 PM
