@Shog9 that's why I posted my now deleted question

user147520
it should have been killed here and not sent to us

Hi folks.
@Rebecca did I miss another email?

12:11 AM
I replied to you and didn't get a reply.
Just checking if I missed a reply or there wasn't one.
@Rebecca did you get my reply?

Maybe we should migrate this one to superuser? For good measure?

Q: important today

kkucchi i want answers this qustion what is: 1- Network data model 2- Hirarichal data model 3- Object Oriented data model*strong text*

I kid, I kid :)

Hmmm, @balpha why didn't you answer the question?

user147520
anyway - it's late here and if the people who closed my (blunt) but to the point meta question would like to explain why it was easier to do that than kill the question highlighted then I'm sure they can find a way to tell me.

Thanks

Good morning

@Moshe, you sent me an email, I have an actionable item. What am I supposed to reply? |: I mean, I can send an 3-letter reply: Ok. if you really want I guess.

@RebeccaChernoff Sorry

12:17 AM
there's alway "oy" if you get bored with "ok"

Oy most certainly does not mean Ok. (;

@iain: there's a long and involved answer to that, but it boiles down to "shit happens" so I'm gonna just stick with that.

@Shog9 Stop playing Mario!

user147520
@Shog9 please post a long and involved answer - I'l read it in my morning - my short answer is kill your own crap

@YiJiang Yes, Mario's the culprit, I'm sure. ;)

12:22 AM
I have to agree with @Iain SO really seems to think SF is a waste land...

@iain: that's what's supposed to happen, but... See previous comment.

@Shog9 There's shit that happens, and then there's "Crazy shit on fire in a box with a side order of WTF." This was a case of the latter, and we at SF want to see if there's any way we can address it before it gets out of hand.

Is this this big an issue? Really? The example question quoted by @Iain would usually have been killed with fire on SO straight away.
That it wasn't was an unfortunate lapse of judgement by 5 people

Yeah, I'm a little unsure why Robert Harvey one-click migrated it to SF...

Out of x-thousand who can cast close votes.

12:23 AM
It was mod-migrated.
One vote.

It was?

@TimStone I know, that is part of what was bothersome about it.

I would have closed it, personally. shrugs

Okay, then that moderator should be asked about his reasoning.

12:24 AM
@Iain's post was a bit inflamatory, so I made a replacement post after his got deleted to address some valid concerns SF people seem to have.

what pekka said. It's the ones that leak through that get remembered, not the mountains of garbage that are quickly dispatched.

Question: Troll or really confused user?

@YiJiang troll

@Shog9 Indeed, it's the bad stuff that makes the news. I think I'll address that in my post.

12:25 AM
@YiJiang After the comments that that one user posted on the answer Pekka linked to the other day....I don't even know anymore.

Just to clarify I believe Anon. here is the OP, just that something odd happened during the migration

1 hour later…

Really rchern?
You want to know how a grid overlay is affected if the underlying objects below the grid overlay move?
So long as 0,0 on the coordinate plane doesn't move, the grid stays the same.

2:47 AM
LOL
> Anybody know anything about GIS stuff? Someone made a comment elsewhere wondering if GPS is inacurrate now because the Japan quake shifted the earth on its axis. Is that a good question or am I going to get flamed for asking?

I also find it hard to believe that the entire country of Japan moved 8 feet to the side.

(me, earlier)

tsk tsk :P

Interesting... you do know that GPS is just a figment of our collective imaginations because of the fact that we have some odd jillion (or less) satellites in the sky at fixed positions

I don't think there's an effect, but it at least felt like a decent question. (:

Thanks BBC, I had forgotten.

Someone just asked me how to use an iPod touch, then proceeded to take out an unopened 1st gen iPod touch. Wow.

It's a decent question in that it will be oft repeated. I want to know if the Island really did move and how the hell that happened.

@Moshe Circa 2007?

@YiJiang Yea. Seriously though. Is it worth anything on eBay?

A: How can earthquakes shift the earth's axis?

StingrayAngular momentum doesn't change, but the angular velocity vector does. This is effectively due to a shift in the body's moment of inertia tensor.

And now I remember how much I suck at physics

Well I get that having a huge tremble in one portion of the Earth would cause it to wobble a little bit. That's easy to understand. I don't get how Japan moved 8 feet but there was only one earthquake area.

@MichaelMrozek I almost double-majored in it, had it not been for time constraints and general laziness.

It was my worst grade in high school, and the reason I didn't double degree in software engineering in college (they had to take Physics 3; CSes didn't)

@drachenstern Isn't it just because the plate moved? (totally un-edumacated guess)

@RebeccaChernoff but if you grind the plate to the left (frame of reference can vary of course, I'm choosing one for clarity) then you would be grinding both edges, yes?
assuming a fairly regular rectangular plate for purposes of demonstration
so if you ground in two places, wouldn't there be TWO earthquakes?

2:57 AM
I was going to reply, but I think I'm basically making stuff up, so I'll shut up. (;

Else, otherwise, it should've just been a sliding not a moving. Sliding would indicate relieving pressure.

Eh, what the heck is 'edumacated'?

@RebeccaChernoff well bear in mind I'm not a plate tectonics specialist either. I'm just trying to consider how it would work if I tried to replicate it with dinner plates on a table.
@YiJiang idiom
or colloquialism ... I'm not sure which it is

I thought it was a sliding. One plate slipping, thus sliding into another?

yeah, but in order for the plate to move 8 feet (or so) it must move on both ends no?

3:01 AM
@drachenstern Well, if I recall correctly from science class, the plates don't stay flat the whole time. One could A) Lodge beneath the other or B)Scrunch up a bit

@Moshe and if it scrunched up a bit, the island would be higher as it moved
@Moshe and if it lodge beneath the other, that's what I'm saying. Moved from one side to the other

the news was also talking about elevation changes.

(off-topic) There is a video take by someone in Tokyo after the earthquake showing a large crack going through his housing estate with water coming out of the cracks, and one of them was actually moving!

@RebeccaChernoff interesting. I hadn't heard those reports.
@YiJiang I thought the only thing off topic in here was discussions of things being offtopic...
@YiJiang one of the cracks was moving?

3:04 AM
@drachenstern Actually, I thought that was pretty on topic too

@YiJiang so is it discussions about discussions about discussions about things being off topic that's a problem?
2

@drachenstern Well, it depends on your perspective, but the crack appear to be widening and closing up as the cameraman moved to towards it
@drachenstern Too Meta! Arrgghhh!

@YiJiang - Link or didn't happen

@YiJiang lol, at least we're not to that level of discussion yet, so so long as we don't discuss the discussion we're having as a meta discussion (I'm on the verge) then we should be fine :p

@drachenstern, but didn't there used to be (ages upon ages ago) just one continent? and with the earthquake things shift and expand? shrugs
I don't remember much science (;

3:06 AM
@RebeccaChernoff yes, but in order for there to be more than one continent there has to be movement on both (assuming a simplistic single sliding direction model) ends so there should be two earthquakes.

At around 1:55

@YiJiang thanks for sharing. That whole video was awesome.

Whoa
What's the latest on the nuclear plants?
@drachenstern - I'm working on a new "How To Play" UI. How do I make a text based game's instructions non-textual?

@Moshe apparently they're still leaking, but idk
@Moshe I have no idea what you want to imply. The point of the game is to buy low and sell high. You need to demonstrate how to buy or sell, and that's about it.

@Moshe Screenshots perhaps? Have a look at this: pttrns.com/walkthroughs

3:14 AM
@YiJiang Very cool! Thanks.

> Japanese authorities are operating on the presumption that possible meltdowns are under way at two nuclear reactors, a government official said Sunday, adding that there have been no indications yet of hazardous emissions of radioactive material into the atmosphere.
> About 180,000 people are being evacuated from within 10 to 20 kilometers (6 to 12 miles) of the Daiichi plant -- which is in addition to the thousands that have already been taken away who live closer by. More than 30,000 more people were being evacuated from their homes within 10 kilometers of the Fukushima Daiini nuclear facility located in the same prefecture.

> It's been almost a full day of tsunami coverage. Time to move on. At first I really did kinda feel bad for Japan. But then, I Googled "Pearl Harbor Death Toll". There. All better.
Pearl Harbor fatal casualties: 2402. Hiroshima fatal casualties from the initial blast: 90,000+. Nagasaki: 60,000+. Present day fatal casualties from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami: 1700+. ~ Amazing what 3 minutes at google and typing a valid response can show...
I really don't think people know what they repeat. Saddening.
k folks I think I'm out for the night. Already one hour less sleep, no need to push things

4:03 AM
@drachenstern Bastards, stealing my time! shakes fist

@drachenstern - Night, expect a new build soon.
@TimStone Stealing your time? Imma sell your time on the black market. Any takers?

@Moshe when they take an hour away yes

@Moshe yes, just don't move the stops again :p

> You borrowed an hour, now you must return it.

hehehe
night

@drachenstern I was gonna add the extra 3 from the iPad, but they took up too much space, crunched up, so I just switched to the top 6 from the map.
Night.

@drachenstern "those damn krauts deserve to be hit by an earthquake tsunami for nuking pearl harbor"
"krauts"? Really?

There are so many things wrong with that entire sentence.

@MichaelMrozek - Shows a lack of understanding. The Germans didn't bomb pearl harbor.

Kraut is a German word recorded in English from 1918 onwards as a derogatory term for a German, particularly a German soldier. Its earlier meaning in English was as a synonym for sauerkraut, a traditional German and central European food. Etymological foundations In German, the term is rarely used alone. It means "herb", or designates the leaves and stem of a plant as opposed to the root. The term is more often used in compound nouns for herbs, and also for cabbage and cabbage products: * Weißkraut = white cabbage (also called Weißkohl) * Blaukraut or Rotkraut = red cabbage (also call...
I had to look it up, uh...

4:16 AM
@Moshe Wait, really? History books are going to need to be revised then

@MichaelMrozek I dunno, ask the dude who called the Japanese nation "Krauts".

Why does the article try to make an excuse based on digital thermometers?
> One youth dipped a cigarette in it and smoked it.
I somehow suspect that "not growing up with mercury thermometers" was not the issue at play here.

They're trying to find a logical explanation to a ridiculously illogical and stupid action?
I mean, come on, this redditor puts it pretty well: reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/g2n9d/…

We broke a mercury switch in high school and they practically shut the building down, you'd think mercury were toxic from 300 yards away

4:25 AM
How did I completely miss the date of the article?
'The Quicksilver Mess By S.C. Gwynne/Texarkana Monday, Jan. 26, 1998'

I almost feel like Time is trolling me by telling me the town is called "Texarkana".

@TimStone It sits on the border, ergo...

Oh, I didn't notice where it happened. Just like that I'm unsurprised

Actually, they had digital thermometers in 1998?

That down is right down the road from an army depot. That scares me.

A: Android SDK install problem

Nicholas JuntillaI'm going to do some complaining right now as well as reaffirm that hitting back and then next solves the problem. Why are there 10 different versions of the Eclipse IDE? Why not have one that can be altered as necessary while installed? The people over at Sun are making things more difficult ...

Who wants to be the one to tell him that Sun didn't create the Eclipse Foundation?
(or that Oracle ate them, for that matter)

@TimStone Yeah, I was gonna say someone should tell him that Sun is no more.

I laughed a bit the other day reading an article that was talking about how Sun at one point had an opportunity to buy Apple, apparently (back in the day), and they were wondering if Sun would have become as successful as Apple has had that gone through...and the former Sun CEO basically said "No, because I would have screwed it up", hahah.

@YiJiang Heh, I just came across the original copy of this post on SO

Q: Requirements Gathering

ArosHow do you go about the requirements gathering phase? Does anyone have a good set of guidelines or tips to follow? What are some good questions to ask the stakeholders? I am currently working on a new project and there are a lot of unknowns. I am in the process of coming up with a list of quest...

Those tags make me sad :(

@TimStone Just migrate it to Programmers and let them deal with it :P

Hahah

Isn't this how we ran into the SF user riot?
just migrate to Site no one will notice...

The difference of course being that we were joking. ;)
Though that question is actually not terrible, just the tags that someone needlessly added..

Question: What do you do with a bottle of 'Mild American Mustard'? Presumably the Americans in this room would know; you guys invented the stuff!

I'm going to assume that this is actually just "regular" mustard, in which case you put it on hotdogs and things. :P

Actually, I should've asked here about the difference between the different type of mustard on the supermarket shelf

@YiJiang shrug
I don't see the point of "mild" mustard. :)

I'm still not sure what that even means, heh
"Dammit, my mustard is too intense!"

But, as Tim said, I'd assume that's just plain ofd "yellow" mustard.

5:31 AM
Eh, are American Mustards 'mild'?

That's the crap I buy because it's cheaper than real mustard.
@YiJiang Yah, basically.

And what is 'real' mustard suppose to be?

They also had Dijonnaise mustard and honey mustard, in similar squeeze bottles

Well, honey mustard is sweetened, though the one's I like are anything but mild.

5:37 AM
Apparently Dijon mustard come from a place called Dijon.

heh:
> since 2005, products in the European Union must be labelled as potential allergens if they contain mustard

Really? It doesn't surprise me that there are people who are allergic, but I didn't know it was that common.

Yah, that's what I was thinking.
That said, I'm all for know just what is in my food no matter if it's an allergen or not.

Easiest way to go on a diet is to see what's in the crap you eat ;)

Thank goodness this wasn't moved to programmer:

Q: Playlist when coding?

mespo365Just wondering what everyones playlist is when coding? Just for fun :)

5:48 AM
@YiJiang I'm pretty sure it'd be a dupe there.
@TimStone Yeah, I know. The crap that goes into processed food is scary.

Whoever designed these track pants with zippers on the outside of the leg apparently didn't think that one through, argh.

@TimStone Designed like an adult toy, huh? :)

Keep moving my legs around and causing the zipper to open and make an attempt to take my hair with it. :P

Yeah, heh

5:57 AM
Products like that drive me nuts. I totally understand that business is about making money. However, product designs should be verified for utility and what not. Products shouldn't be just designed for the sake of making money.

@Moshe Yes, Xcode 4.
@Jacob - You still here?
Er, I just replied to myself by mistake. strange.

Didn't know that was possible.
@Jacob Yes, Xcode 4.

@Moshe Did you do that through the interface?

@Moshe Replying to oneself can be useful in situations like this where I want to continue separate trains of thought, while maintaining simultaneous conversations. however, this is impossible via the interface, I'm afraid.
@GeorgeMarian - I copied the permalink ID into the box, preceded by a colon

Well, You know how Windows progress bars are known to be innacurate?

@Moshe No way, ya kidding mate? Research!? Imma leaving that for teh dead trees man!

Well, Mac OS progress bars are too. Just, they lie in a different way. They do jump, but from 46 minutes to 24 minutes. And they don't stop and then say 2 days.
In other words, they jump, but only in one direction.

6:11 AM
@TimStone I wasn't too impressed with Zuckerburg's definition of a hacker.

The safest place puzzle actually seems like something Facebook would use in a social graph, determine the farthest person on your social graph.
Facebook looking for outsiders to consider inside challenges without disclosing info?
Just make it a puzzle and ask random folks to get answers for you.
Although they need the answers to select a winner, so out with that theory.

@Moshe Indeed, but it won't be Facebook if none of the challenges doesn't even make a mention of the famous social graph, no?

I did some competitions in high school, but nothing that was quite that intense. I don't think I could handle it. Speed wise, if I'm on the ball I'm pretty decent, but under the pressure I always want to overanalyze the problem, which just wastes time.

Pascal?! :P Nifty, though.

@Moshe Hrm.... What happens if...

This is the page with the question statements: comp.nus.edu.sg/~noi/2011/tasks.html
Hmmm, my school only came in second

I just replied to myself in the message I posted. So strange.

@TimStone Yeah, I dunno how well I would do with something like that either. I've slapped some solutions together with amazing speed, like the python script I wrote a little while ago. However, I dunno about doing it under the gun.

lmao at the problem descriptions

This is because he feels that it is his life’s destiny to carry a lot of change
everywhere and would like to spend as few of them as possible.
It is not known how he came to be like this. Legend has it that his
mother’s gynaecologist dropped him on his head when he was born.

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, and admittedly I'm not very motivated by competition for whatever reason.

I once did a Lego Robotics competition in elementary school. We had to program the robots.

@TimStone I'm already competitive enough. :)

Hahah ;)

I did alright, the instructor made a mistake and gave me the wrong instructions for one task.
Let's see....
Xcode 4, here we go!

Ok, ttyl folks.
I have to get to bed, but first, I gotta play w Xcode 4!

WTF?
Hmm...Me thinks I found a bug...
Has anyone had chat repost a previous image when going to upload a new one? Presumably, when the image was from the web instead of a local one.

@GeorgeMarian Yes! God damn that bug!
@GeorgeMarian Yeah, that was really bad :/

@TimStone LOL So, how old is this bug?

It's on my "to investigate" list, heh. I mentioned it before, but since I'm using a beta browser.. :P

@TimStone Yeah, I've never liked long haul bus rides, especially into the city. They're usually under time pressures, due to traffic and what not.
@TimStone Well, this is on Chormium v10.something
So, I think it may not be a beta browser thing. :)

Ah ha :P
Hmm, break time. Back sometime later, heh.

7:07 AM
@TimStone heh see yah

I found your work at http://bonsaiden.github.com/JavaScript-Garden/ . It looks really awesome. I'm co-founder (company name) here in Singapore. Our team here, we're looking for someone exactly like you to help with our application. Are you currently still studying? I'd like to know more about you.

You can contact me at (email) or call me at (phone) at any time. Let me buy you coffee just for a chat yea =)
I uh... I...

@YiJiang They're looking for free work? ;)

Hi! :)

It would be nice to have an image hosting site where I paste an image from my clipboard, and it gets uploaded…
Oh, imgur has a screen capturing tool which instantly uploads the images to imgur! Nice!
it doesn't work for me :(

9:45 AM
@YiJiang what question?

@balpha The Code Review question

16 hours ago, by balpha
but that answer is more for codegolf :)

True, true. And the best solution so far looks a lot like yours
  var newI = (i%2?1:-1) * Math.floor((i+1)/2) + start;
  if (newI >= 0 && newI < yourArray.length) {
    document.write( newI + "<br>");
    // do something with yourArray[newI];
    max--;
  }
  i++;

@YiJiang Why not just do i%2||-1? It's 1 character shorter. :P

@Nyuszika7H And a lot less comprehensible

9:55 AM
function makeArray() {
    var arr = [], item;
    while (item = prompt('Item:')) arr.push(item);
    return arr;
}
If you don't want to add more items, just leave the field blank or close the window.
@YiJiang why?

@Nyuszika7H Because while the ternary version translates nicely for me, the or version, I don't know, just isn't immediately obvious

@YiJiang hmm, right
