The question is, why do you care how much rep they generate? How about 50k+ users that really have no business with the amount of rep they have? (and regularly post poor&/**wrong** answers that get deleted)

@Richardakacyberkiwi where are these users?
the crux of the problem is that rep corresponds to community respect/privilege
and some folks are achieving high rep levels using the wrong behaviors
I'm not for 50k rep users that got there with bad answers, we should figure out how that's happening and fix the problem
rather than do nothing

It's easy - all you need to do is be on SO/SE sites long enough, a regular joe bloggs with a modicum of skills can garner a very high rep. There are as many (or few) of those as high-rep question askers. It's a matter of balance in discrimination

12:52 AM
Just added some of that mustard to a sandwich I made
It's not too bad, but I am surprised at how sour mustard is

@YiJiang that mustard?

19 hours ago, by Yi Jiang
Question: What do you do with a bottle of 'Mild American Mustard'? Presumably the Americans in this room would know; you guys invented the stuff!
I bought a bottle of that stuff yesterday

@YiJiang got it -- I prefer brown mustard or dijon
yellow mustard ("american mustard") doesn't really do too much for me

Its not spicy enough?

@YiJiang that's part of it, I just prefer the more intense flavor of brown or dijon

1 hour later…
2:14 AM
@YiJiang Some folks like their mustard to taste like mustard. We like our mustard to taste like vinegar.

@Shog9 Hmmm, maybe I should've bought honey mustard instead then

Why? You can always just add honey...

Eh, I don't have honey with me right now
Hang on, is that suppose to be a joke?

no...
I mean, have you had honey mustard?

Eh, not really
Is this a good excerpt for the tag: stackoverflow.com/suggested-edits/17157

2:26 AM
why is there a tackoverlow.com tag?

I have no idea, but there are a few unclosed questions, so it might have a purpose

ah.

aaaanyway, back to important stuff: get yourself some horseradish mustard

fwiw I created the stackoverflow.com tag
mostly to pick up stuff to shuffle off to meta
the trouble was people were using the stackoverflow tag to mean stackoverflow.com
so i figured if there was a .com tag it'd reduce that a bit

2:30 AM
Maybe should be renamed to make it clear

slaps mark upside the head with a limp horseradish

I remember starting a meta discussion on it originally
it's also unclear that programming questions that use stackoverflow.com as an example really belong on meta

Q: What's up with the [sofaq] tag on SO?

Mark ElliotI noticed a number of [sofaq] tagged questions on SO. It seems that by definition these should be on meta, yet many of them haven't been migrated. Since there's no ambiguity I propose they should be migrated en masse. Thoughts?

the discussion is in the comments
i went through the entire list of [stackoverflow] (at the time) and retagged ~80 questions to [stackoverflow.com] to differentiate questions about stackoverflows from questions about StackOverflow

@RebeccaChernoff Do you think it would be a good idea to reverse the -> tag synon?

I think this would take some work to explain:

Q: imgae onclick php function

umarHello everyone. plz help me out with this problem . i have a php class in which there is a delete function . i want when i click on image it should call that delete function but this line is not working echo "<img src='icon/del.gif' onClick='.delete().'/>" . I have tried with href tag b...

2:41 AM
@MarkElliot Made clear
Ah crap, edit collision goes over to compare notes

heh, your title was better
but we basically made the same edits
the question was clear to me, it's just going to take some explaining to answer
did you add the js tag?
the guy is actually trying to call PHP from the onClick attribute

Well, on second thought he didn't intend to be using JavaScript at all
@MarkElliot Yeah, I should've read that from the question

yep.

3:11 AM
why doesn't SO's post function just convert tabs to spaces?

@MarkElliot I think it should, but I have definitely seen some tabs stick around

I mean in the raw post
rather than the rendered one

3:48 AM
Hooray iPhone tethering

|:
isn't it more like hooray $30/mo if you have a new device?

Hello

@RebeccaChernoff $20, but it was that or no internet at the moment |:

Ah, was speaking generally. (:

This hotel apparently has free internet, just not building-wide wifi, heh.

3:56 AM
you're excused then I supposed q:

What, Pentium Pros in the basement business center?

@RebeccaChernoff Whew.
@MichaelPetrotta Those typical "buy in bulk", but on the new side, Dells it looked like, heh.

@TimStone: I like the cute little Dells my library has - they mount them on the table legs.

Ah, yes. I think the university I went to had something like that.
Hm, definitely should have finished copying this project over to my laptop before I left though.
Damn Eclipse.

I just used a !important; now I feel slightly dirty...

4:05 AM
Ick

4:24 AM
Good idea for tablet navigation? (the 'panel' will be hidable, of course)

@YiJiang: when you have something to try, @mention me a link and I'll try it on my xoom
but tomorrow, I'm off to bed now

4:50 AM
@YiJiang That looks beautiful

Is there a super-duper-incredibly-painless-don't-make-me-think method to get a google map of a list of locations? I don't need it to be ongoing dynamic and this isn't for a site or anything, I just have a list of locations and I want to see a 1-time map. I basically just want to paste in a list somewhere.

@RebeccaChernoff Well, if you have this little Firefox add-on called Ubiquity... joking of course. Can't you just enter a comma separated list into the search box?

@RebeccaChernoff I hear there's a site for these kinds of questions... (just kidding :p)

I don't think there's an easy way to do that, although you could Get Directions and then just add each destination.

5:02 AM
Yeah, not really want I want. (:

I didn't think so, but it's kind of dumb like that unfortunately, heh.

Hmm, actually, I'm thinking of something like Dan showed us, the clusters with numbers

Maybe use Google Earth instead?
You can just keep entering locations into Google Maps, and it will create a new marker for each of them, right?

I've got a large list. Anything that involves one-by-one is a no-go. (:

@RebeccaChernoff There was a "nice batch geocoder", but that link is dead now for me.

5:05 AM
You can use the static map API
Generate the URL using a small script or by hand

Or use this

It didn't look like batchgeo did clustering

Oh.
...Probably not, sorry.

Apparently it does do clustering, but maybe only for the paid verison.
Ah ha.

5:10 AM
I didn't want to do any programming other than pasting in a list, but gah. (;

@RebeccaChernoff What are you, a customer service representative now? Well, yes, yes you are, but...

At least they gav u teh codez!

@YiJiang o:

yawns If we can jump an hour ahead, can we just go for broke and jump to Tuesday night?
Heh, Windows 7 thinks my iPhone is a "digital camera" at the moment.

consider it done

5:15 AM
Ah good, I can go home then.

so close to 20k on Stackoverflow.

Ah, nice :D

@TimStone uh, it doesn't always?

I haven't even made it to 10K. shames
@RebeccaChernoff It occasionally shows it as an iPhone.

trusted user I shall be, then all show bow before me...

5:16 AM
Well, "mobile device", but the picture is of an iPhone.

Oh hrm, I don't have lat/long, just city names. This is not quite the copy/paste I was going for. grumbles
actually sometimes I don't even have the city

Where did you get this data? :o

a family tree

Ah, interesting.

Hmm, even some that only have country.
I mean, not that it needs to be incredibly precise, just thought a general picture would be cool.

5:30 AM
nods You can always get the geocode data from the Google Maps API, but that's probably more work than you wanted.

Yeah, for now I was just going for a 5-minute "ohhhhh pretty data in the map".
May code something up eventually, but not right now. (:

I'd try to be more helpful, but I'm trying to throw a screen together for the morning and my lack of sleep is not cooperating. Totally @Benjol's fault. ;)

@TimStone, rubs eyes what's that? Who's @ing me so early in the morning?

Heheh, g'morning :)

@TimStone Nah, was totally an off-hand idea.

5:33 AM
@TimStone Glad to see I'm not the only one who's rep progress has been decimated by chat :)

Ah, blaming chat, good idea. :D

@TimStone, these days, actually answering on SO is what I do when I've got bored of chat & meta & review (and that doesn't happen very often...)

My tethering seems to be a bit unreliable, hrm.
Ah yeah, I spend a lot of time on /review, since it's easier than finding questions to answer, heh.

19,999... you're killing me.

@MichaelPetrotta GO AN' COPY AN' PASTE A WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE INTO A TAG WIKI!!!

5:39 AM
Hahah

didn't realize you got rep for that, once you got past 2k.
woohoo!
Michael Petrotta, Portland, Oregon
20k 2 24 51

@MichaelPetrotta Well, once you're past 20k, you won't get reps for that either
Ah, last chance gone. Too bad :P

celebration!

downvote time!

runs away

5:41 AM
Gosh, I shouldn't have picked up Why's guide to Ruby...
(Yes, the book has cartoon foxes in it)

that series is in one of Joel's books.

6:24 AM
This is a very dyslexic day. I just had a phone chat with a co-worker who is having problems with the opposite sex. Yeah, like I really need to hear about that. So I said:
"You should totally drop her and start jading day query"
I pushed 3 changes that broke due to reversing things
I'm not fit for productivity today.

@YiJiang do you have the link of the cartoon strip with the dog who travels weird places with his master ?
D: I seem to have lost it

<--- Click

ah :D thanks
I should just give in and try google bookmarks
Also someone should add that here

6:44 AM
I need testing for the mobile version
Not entirely sure how well it would work, but heck...

6:55 AM
@YiJiang got a shortened link? I'll try it with symbian

7:07 AM
"GNOME is very difficult to understand" ... Amen, Brother.

7:28 AM
I WANTZ my ENVOLOP!

@waffles Is envelope more popular than Jon Skeet already?

for the record, we now have 3 of us working on this area ... hopefully it will be more adequate by the end of the week

@YiJiang I get a dropbox 404

I just changed it so the reputation number in the header links to the "reputation activity" that should be deployed later

@TimPost That's odd, I can access it fine. Can someone confirm this?
I'm curious now that the reputation tab looks, basically like the /reputation page, is that page going to be removed and its features (recalc button, etc.) moved to the profile?

7:33 AM
That is strange, works fine in chrome

@YiJiang we are going to reduce some of the noise there, personally I do not think we really want to display more than 2 weeks of rep changes on a screen, it gets way too noisy
also I much preferred the old block display for dates and rep, we will probably bring that back is some form
I think /reputation will stay ... the idea with the rep tab is to show you "what just happened to my reps"

> Singapore is testing food imported from Japan for radiation
That seems... a little extreme

Text messages in The Philippines running rampant "Prepare for Chernobyl 2!!!!!" <sigh>
This is an epic, EPIC failure of western journalism.
"Well, COULD it blow up? Then we should report and say it probably will! The ratings will SOAR!"

@TimPost Depending on your definition of 'fail'... I suspect that by their definition this is very much success (which is fail in itself, I guess. So you're right)

Meanwhile, people in Asian countries who watch Fox News start burying themselves in holes. Wait, sorry, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

7:43 AM
I had an idea, what if we displayed a tiny icon to the right of your reputation number in the header, that indicated that your reputation changed since the last time you visited the reputation tab in users, thought? waffles?

@waffles How about a sparkline of my rep over the last [period] ?

@waffles Waffles! But, uh, no, that idea doesn't make a lot of sense to me

@waffles a tiny up or down arrow? Kind of like a stock ticker?

@TimPost yeah, @YiJiang why ?

@TimPost, the problem is, there's already a tiny down arrow ;)

7:45 AM
IMHO, the toolbar is distracting enough.

sparkline would be a bit too heavy ...
the idea is that we need to indicate to a user ... you did something good, check here to see what it is, especially important for new users

@waffles, it would be tantamount to moving back to two inboxes again though...

@waffles Well, it just doesn't make sense - what purpose would it serve? And with the hover popup right now, someone could just 'well, I'll try clicking on that...' then accidentally reset the counter

@YiJiang but clicking on it would take you to the rep page and show you how you were awesome, mission accomplished
@Benjol I have thought of this quite a lot, envelope had the problem it was letting you know about stuff the multicollider did, so you were getting double notified

7:48 AM
Could've totally done this with the envelope :P

@waffles, so if you filter out everything that the multicollider tells you, that just leaves what... favourites, rep and badges?

this would mean there are 2 types of notifications you get ... global comments and answers -> from the collider.... local -> good behavior from the other place
badges already have a very loud notification so we don't need to notify
notifying on fav changes in the header feels a bit like an overkill for me
but training 10-500 rep users ... hey you did something good -> look here ... is kind of critical to the way the site works

@waffles not sure I agree. I would never remember to check favourites without that

@waffles It does, but one of the things that have been taken away is list of recent fav. changes

personally I ALWAYS want know why my rep changed as soon as possible, and I have lots of rep, guess I am compulsive
fav changes is a hard one ... very hard one

7:52 AM
I care less about rep than favourites, and I guess that shows :)

@waffles Do you use @badpssockpuppet's SO Live! thingadongdong?

@YiJiang not really I should check it out ...

@waffles I'd even go so far as to have favourite changes in the supercollider...

I suggest the chat version, it's so much better

Favs is a hard problem to solve notification wise
The first problem there is a better view than meta.stackoverflow.com/users/17174/…

7:53 AM
Just for clarification, what is favouriting considered to be for?

it does not tell me what happened

@waffles I thought the old solution was working okay...? (There was the problem of certain revisions not showing up, but still)
@Benjol Keeping track of a question - all comments, revisions, new answers. I think that's the point
Of course its also a bit of a popularity contest considering questions like the Flash CS4 one
But that's not intended, I believe

@YiJiang that's in my ignored tags... ;)

@YiJiang yeah the old display works better than the current fav wise

An excellent example of a favourite that I want to know about NOW! is the recent changes one in meta

Q: Flash CS4 refuses to let go

EnderI have a flash project; it has many source files. I have a fairly heavily-used class, call it Jenine. I recently (and, perhaps, callously) relocated Jenine from one namespace to another. I thought we were ready - I thought it was time. The new Jenine was better in every way - she had lost some co...

It has 100+ favs, obviously most of them have no interest whatsoever in any new activity in this already solved question
So in this sense favs are used as an alternative voting system

yeah that worries me

I never really got favs

@YiJiang I don't think so, I think that they're also used as an alternative bookmark system

hence I want to make that a not today problem ... the urgent one is making that rep changes list ... less ... hmmm ... scary

After all they're called favourites like in that browser who's name I can't remember :)

7:57 AM
and figure out a reasonable notification policy when it comes to rep changes

@Benjol Possible, true.

I'm sorry to say this, but my in-browser bookmarks are so screwed, I'd quite like to have a decent in-stackexchange bookmarks system. (and it would be automatically cross-browser that way too)

@YiJiang so you dislike the idea of an icon that notifies you that your rep changed in the header, what alternative do you suggest?

@waffles, ok, if favourites are for later, is it worth opening a meta question to talk around the subject?
@waffles, I'm guessing that people like Jon & Marc would never not see the icon :)

@Benjol sure
@Benjol ... hence "reasonable notification policy" :)

8:00 AM
@waffles, I guess what we need to know is what question do you think the user is asking himself when he clicks on your icon

@waffles Hmmm, well I personally don't see the need for such an icon, so I'd simply say skip it. But of course I can be wrong too

"Your reputation has changed" - he could wonder "why?" or "what does that mean?"
Can you answer both in one go?

@YiJiang so how do you teach 10 rep users how to play the game? You did something good ... here is a cookie
@Benjol ofcourse answer both

@waffles Badges; the notifications are so prominent it's impossible to ignore, and at the start almost anything you do will get you a cookie (ahem, badge) handed to you
Erhm... stackoverflow.com/posts/5295765/edit - he's stuck an image right into the middle of his code o_o

@YiJiang but badges are so rare ... as a high rep user I thing a reasonable notification policy would be "show icon if user did not visit the reputation tab in the last 24 hours ... or something"

8:03 AM
I'm about to ask a LyX question in TeX. God bless me, for I'm about to be smitten

@waffles Hang on, you're switching between high- and low- rep users too quickly for me.
Are you thinking of covering the two use cases? Noob: "What's the shiny thing up there?", Non-noob: "Ooh, new shiny reps for me!"

"WTF DUDE, you need to look up SQL SYNTAX??" .. Um yeah, I write device drivers for a living. I think this is the epic battle between hiring managers and programmers, managers appear to be losing.

@Benjol I just wish the top bar was always visible, then I think SO Live achieves some sort of balance in notification

"What about heap randomization??" ... 'what's that???' I'm so glad I don't waste gas going to interviews.

@badpssockpuppet You mean here in chat as well?

8:12 AM
@badpssockpuppet I don't see the need for that; what do you need to use in the top bar that's so frequently accessed that you can't just scroll to the top to use it?

@Benjol No, the site edition

Surely, using PHP for process checkpointing MUST be possible. It is PHP , after all, right?

IMHO it's not too obnoxious (if you blink you'll miss it), but visible enough (there's a few animations)... just you can't see it if you're not right at the top of the page, and staying there after a minute

@badpssockpuppet Hm, that could make for problems on some specific sites (photography, for example)

@YiJiang eh, somebody did write that, but it brings the entire header (along with site logo) with it.

8:14 AM
@badpssockpuppet I know, @drac (crap, whats his name again >_<) did

"So we just need you to expand that POSIX layer thing, should be 2 - 3 weeks if you really know what you're doing, right?" Then I got put on hold (he put the phone down) for 30 minutes to talk to his buddy about some bets

@Benjol I just meant the few pixels of the top bar :)

@badpssockpuppet ok. That said @waffles, I think I like SO live better than an icon... ( but that also presumes that there is/will be enough room)

(23 on TeX)
Yeah, I mean, SO Live is so live.</bad-pun-of-the-day>

@badpssockpuppet Hmmm?

8:16 AM
@YiJiang Height of #hlinks

Ah, right

I think I'm just going to teach.

rep linking to the rep report as opposed to the priv page is so much more useful ... that is live now

Given that 8/10 hiring managers are clueless .. what do you do?

@Benjol I will try out SO live tomorrow

8:27 AM
@TimPost SO Careers?

Q: Whats the difference between jQuery and Javascript?

Steven HammonsWhats the difference between jQuery and Javascript?

The other one was "It's easy to parse JSON with BASH, right? We can use signals and stuff to update the front end UI dynamically??"

@TimPost Parse JSON with bash?

@Benjol About to just give up on the freelance stuff entirely.
I just wanted a short term contract gig I could do part time to get over a hump.

@TimPost Become one and put the others to shame!!!

8:29 AM
@badpssockpuppet I am a hiring manager at my day job.

This reminds me, I need to reinstall SO Live.

If I'm going to be a dinosaur, I chose to be a Velociraptor with rainbow feathers. Let's see how the recruiters deal with "I'm working on something now that reduces Linux kernel space requirements by an order of magnitude by simply using a remote RDBMS! What do you think????? It's gong to be HUGE!"
If I get "Woah, we like this enthusiasm!" it goes right to spam cop
And if they bite, I'll say "Here, I have this example in scheme you can send to the client!"

@TimPost Brilliant!

@Barry I thought so. Necessity is the mother of all useful things.
