> Math.floor(0.5) + Math.floor(0.5) === Math.floor(0.5 + 0.5)
false

and Math.floor(4.59) + Math.floor(4.59) === Math.floor(4.59 + 4.59); <- 8 === 9
It works fine if min(fromBase, toBase) % max(fromBase, toBase) === 0
but for other bases, it chokes. So 256 -> 16 works, but 256 -> 32 does not

2:34 PM
Hi @MylesGray!

I came up with an interesting idea
First convert to a common lower base, then upcovert back to the destination base
so to convert 256 -> 32, you'd first convert 256 -> 2, then 2 -> 32...

@ircmaxell, sounds like you just invented binary encoding :)

Well, yes, but it's more complicated than that. Since if you want to convert 256 -> base 9, converting to base 2 won't help
you'd need to convert to base 3 first

hm, ok, I see

Q: What's the purpose of "views" count in user's profile?

sharptoothOn any SE universe site I'm registered my user page displays "views" right next to the number of reputation points. What's the use of those "views" counter? I mean, okay, someone viewed my user page N+P times, so what? How does this help anyone in asking questions and getting answers?

A: Easy ways to find answers that should be comments, for flagging purposes

Yi JiangThis is more for laughs than anything else, and doesn't really answer your question, since they are more candidates for editing than flagging, but here goes: With this many questions, we have a great deal of misspelling. Are you familiar with the Penalty Box?

The penalty box (sometimes called the sin bin, bad box, or bin) is the area in ice hockey, rugby football and some other sports where a player sits to serve the time of a given penalty, for an offense not severe enough to merit outright expulsion from the contest. Teams are generally not allowed to replace players who have been sent to the penalty box.

It’s not something we looked forward to, but as of tonight, we’re instituting a penalty box on Stack Overflow. …

Still... you cant answer questions?

@MylesGray nope :(

You're not supposed to be able to use the site at all, that's kind of the point :-\

And I can't even talk on chat.SE (which includes SU, SF etc.), not even if I change my parent user from SO to something else.
that's because of COPPA :/

2:47 PM
So I have 9,987 precious meta reps. I decide that I might as well recalc, so I cross the 10k line only once. /reputation tells me I have 10,126 and adds a mocking :) to it.

I'm guessing that your days here are limited - logically they must be. Maybe they're just leaving you enough time to say goodbye?...

@Benjol yeah, I think so, though they didn't say anything about it :/

@Nyuszika7H If we dont see you again (for a year) bon voyage good sir

@MylesGray what does that mean? :)
@LoïcWolff btw, xkcd is oneboxed here

@MylesGray oh, thanks

@badpssockpuppet I'd lose 100 and not be able to protect posts anymore. And with the amount of post-protecting I do, I really can't afford to lose that privilege

@Nyuszika7H you could get @GeorgeMarian to talk with your parents, he's Hungarian :)

@MichaelMrozek The only logical explanation is you stole my reps.

Only 100. Pray I don't steal any more

2:57 PM
@Nyuszika7H Wait, you're actually 12? I thought that was a joke!

@PopularDemand No... I have Asperger's syndrome.

@Nyuszika7H Then why did you link the "we're suspending accounts for <13 users" post? Did I misread?

@PopularDemand I got suspended on SO today :(

@PopularDemand He meant "no it's not a joke"

@Benjol right

3:00 PM
@Nyuszika7H, gotta go now. If you disappear I promise to ask a question in your honour on meta ;) And please bear in mind my suggestion about getting your parents involved...

poor taste of a joke if it was...

And if not, see you in 10 months...

@Nyuszika7H What does Asperger's have to do with your Stack Exchange account status? I know several people who fall on various parts of the spectrum.

is Asperger's syndrome the one where you can't stop eating?

@oraclecertifiedprofessional NOPE

3:01 PM
@PopularDemand, I think it's intended why he would be here instead of somewhere more kiddy

@oraclecertifiedprofessional You may be thinking of anorexia. But that's not right either; you're confusing that with bulimia.

@oraclecertifiedprofessional Please tell me that is a joke!
Anyway, I said I was going, so, I'm gone....

No I'm thinking of Prader-Willi
I don't know why I got that confused

@MylesGray I am well aware of what bulimia is. How is that not "can't stop eating"? Obviously it's not possible to literally not stop eating.

@PopularDemand it can be in many forms, people may eat normally but throw up secretly (it is on a par with annorexia) to lose weight

@everyone Oh, btw, if I disappear, we can still chat on #stackoverflow!

It's not that they cant stop eating

@MylesGray I think we're just interpreting "can't stop eating" differently.

Inedia (Latin: "fasting") is the ability to live without food. The word was first used to describe a fast-based lifestyle within Catholic tradition, which holds that certain saints were able to survive for extended periods of time without food or drink other than the Eucharist. Breatharianism is a related concept, in which believers claim food and possibly water are not necessary, and that humans can be sustained solely by prana (the vital life force in Hinduism), or, according to some, by the energy in sunlight (according to Ayurveda, sunlight is one of the main sources of prana). Asperger syndrome or Asperger's syndrome or Asperger disorder () is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. @PopularDemand A person that doesn't look entirely unlike you would be good enough; would I ever need to be able to tell the difference?

I'm trying to find a solution to a^m = b^n, if one exists...

@Pop You'd be asking stuff on Meta like "How to access SOFU from a correctional facility"

3:38 PM

"How to convince my warden that SO is a useful site"

> 1^1 === 1^1
1

@Pekka "How to make wifi signal boostr w/nonsplintering toothbrush"

@badpssockpuppet Where a != b and m != n I presume

Well, what about 256 and 36? 256^m = 36^n? I'm not even sure it's possible if I'm thinking about it...

3:39 PM
but for a,b,m,n > 1, distinct, different, prime to one another and integer there should be no real solution

@YiJiang @ircmaxell How is it possible that it returns 1 and not true?

unless you drop the primeness requirement

@PopularDemand "How to buy cigarettes and crack with reputation points"

Then you want 2^16 = 4^8

@Nyuszika7H: because ^ is not power, it's xor

3:40 PM
@Nyuszika7H You're doing bitwise xors, not power

@Pekka "How to buy reputation points with cigarettes and crack," more likely.

@PopularDemand haha

Operator precedence...

@Nyuszika7H That simplifies to 1^true^1 which is 1

So 1^1 === 1^1 doesn't mean (1^1) === (1^1), it means 1^(1 === 1^1).

3:41 PM
@Nyuszika7H No, ^ doesn't mean at all what you think it means

@MichaelMrozek Hmm.

@Nyuszika7H Close, it means 1^(1 === 1)^1

@ircmaxell oh right

Wait, we're talking about power, not bitwise XOR right?

@badpssockpuppet We're talking about power; @Nyuszika7H's python shell is not

3:42 PM
@badpssockpuppet Yes, I was talking about power

@MichaelMrozek Python?! It's JS!

Whatever

Still, right now 2^3 = 8, not 1

Dang you, z-index!!! I'll get you someday!

Here's the problem. I need to do a base convert from base 256 to base 36. But I can't convert the entire thing at one shot due to limitations of 32 bit ints. So rather than use bc math (which might not work), I'm trying to convert from base 256 to a common power base, then from that common power down to 36...

Q: Pi Day Celebration

Maciej ZiarkoToday we celebrate Pi Day. So I came up with the idea. I prepared an exercise connected with math.pi and solved it just to practise Python coding. So the exercise is... Find the time of the year that is closest to PI. Assume that: March 14th 00:00:00.000000 is 3.14 March 15th 00:00:00.000000...

Is it fair to close this question? I mean, it's not exactly appropriate, but it is a special day :P

@Nyuszika7H Base four.

@YiJiang I see the SO icon in the corner there. Why not migrate it to Code Golf/Puzzles?

@PopularDemand Its not a code puzzle or code golf
Plus, that's not available on the list
Ah well, closed.

@YiJiang Okay, maybe I should have actually clicked the link.

@Yi why not migrate to meta?

@drachenstern Is there some context to this question that I'm missing?

4:24 PM
What's UG? And what's the shipment?

@PopularDemand yes. I rather imagine there is. The short version: Can I ask them (SEI) to overnight a gift or would that be too brazen?
UG -> UserGroup

I have no idea what you mean by "gift." Gift you're receiving? Gift you're giving someone else?
Oh, you added a link while I was writing. Jerk.
I'm not clear on what that link has to do with your question.
Who or what is SEI? The company from which you're buying/have bought the gift?

I added a link to the wrong room. FML ffs
@PopularDemand yes, that link had nothing to do with anything.
@PopularDemand SEI: StackExchange, Inc.

No, I've basically asked if I should ask them for overnight service. If I were to go into "the other room where I frequent" and ask in there then that would be pretty much asking them to do so.
@YiJiang shhh, then everyone will want one :p

I initially thought you bought a widget from South Georgia Industries to give to someone at your UG as a prize for winning the contest that was announced at the previous UG meeting, or something.

@PopularDemand Hey, I was just talking to @RebeccaChernoff the other day about you...

@YiJiang Oh god no.

4:35 PM
I'm not allowed to say what we were talking about, but its not good. For you, that is.

Where have you been, anyways? Several times over the past few weeks I've thought "hey, that's odd, Yi Jiang isn't around."
@YiJiang ...thanks.

@PopularDemand seconded

I'm unable to tell whether you're joking.

@PopularDemand That's not "typical for all people"?

@PopularDemand School. From 5am GMT+8 to around 3-5pm GMT+8 on weekdays. There's a one week break in March, right now, so I'll be a lot more free this week
@PopularDemand That's a joke :P What do ya think, the two of us conspiring behind your back...
Or is it?

4:37 PM

@YiJiang yeah, we have those too. Do you call yours just a regular break, or does it have a name? Ours is "Spring Break" (Which if you've been on the internet more than one week I expect you to know that already) (I also assume yours is called roughly the same thing, just with a hint less debauchery in general)

@YiJiang Not conspiring, but that doesn't mean you couldn't have been discussing something bad for me.
I mean, you said that without any provocation.

@PopularDemand do you have any kitchen plumbing related equipment?

@drachenstern Eh, a lot less. And it's just called the eh, 'March break'. So much for creativity...
@PopularDemand Look at the message I was replying to. Really, can you think of a more vague message to say? :P

@drachenstern What @YiJiang isn't telling you is that all students are required to move from place to place, on foot, and in formation, during this "break."

4:41 PM
@YiJiang yeah, that's what I meant by a hint. "March Break" ... originality

@YiJiang Hm, I suppose.

@PopularDemand Isn't he from Singapore? I thought they were a slightly more Western culture than all that. Now, were he from Beijing I would believe that.

@PopularDemand But yes, you should totally check your plumbing. And put on some tin foil hats too. Those we'll do you good
@drachenstern I know what Spring break means in American culture. Or at least I think I do. It's a little weird to say that you 'know' the 'American culture', but at least I do have an inkling of what happens then

@PopularDemand, @YiJiang, "huh" to both of your @lerts?

@YiJiang Da gummint have infilmatrated Reynolds! Dey're in da tinfoil!!! Ya gots ta wear dem diving helmets ta be safe!

@RebeccaChernoff Didn't we have a conversation about switching between QWERTY and Colemak a few weeks/months ago?

4:44 PM
@YiJiang googling spring break should be enough to tell you what the stereotype is. However, that only tends to happen for sufficiently young folks with parents who don't mind paying through the nose for a vacation. I preferred my spring breaks to be spent at work.

Well, Dvorak, but the principle is the same.

@RebeccaChernoff whistles innocently
@drachenstern A little hard to forget about the stereotype when one of the first modules this year is about mass media and the commercialization of the teenage market, with specific examples from the United States

@PopularDemand Erm, right. Sorry, distracted by trying to get something done...asap.

@YiJiang is it? By George I wish we had a module like that in every High School for every age-group/year-class that they were mandated to prove orally by the end of the term that they were cognizant of the effects of the media and the physical goods vendors on their delicate psyche. However, that might destroy the entire West by both morale and pocketbook, so that might not be such a great idea.

@RebeccaChernoff No worries. Forget I @ed you.

ok q:
just tell him/her he's gotta use qwerty a bit each day to keep up the skill
If I don't use qwerty for 5-10 minutes a day, after a couple days I struggle.
