@gdoron Every year we do something fun for our users on April 1. That's about it. The cause is providing some lighthearted entertainment and (ideally) brightening someone's day. Taking millions of users out on a trip would be more expensive in the end. :) — Adam Lear ♦ 6 hours ago

A: What Happened to Stack Overflow in 2014?

Jon EricsonShog suggests there is a natural equalibrium between askers and answerers. My gut reactions were: ~8k questions a day is pretty remarkable given the site's humble, even naive, beginnings. So much has been done to help the whole operation scale and yet sometimes the works get jammed up. Regular ...

@404 I am uncomfortably angry about this.

@AlexisKing Uncomfortably? :P
I think they were one-flag nukeable anyway, so it's not a huge change.

Haha, well, I probably shouldn’t be so upset about such a tiny change, but sometimes I seriously didn’t have very much to say, but I felt I could still contribute value. That workaround always felt like an open secret to me.
I can’t imagine abuse was actually all that common, but I don’t actually know anything. Maybe SE knows something I don’t.

Pretty often it was used to say "Yes." to a "Can I do this?" question. Or just random other stuff.
I can't think of a comment I've seen under 15 characters that actually wasn't snarky and was constructive.
Maybe yours were the rare gems. :P

user315433
On MathJax-enabled sites it's still possible to cheat ${}{}{}{}$

Eh. Maybe I’m just overestimating the times I’ve wanted it.

4:34 AM
You can also fill your comment with bananas. Though that's probably a poor solution.

@hichris123 For some definitions of “poor”...
Only tangentially related, how long has “What have you tried?” been banned? I tried saying that yesterday and was a little bit surprised to find that it wasn’t allowed.

A: "What have you tried" epidemic

Shog9I agree - these are getting old. If the question's really missing something, either down-vote / close / flag or take the time to explain what is missing. Starting now, comments that consist of nothing but "what have you tried" are blocked completely, and comments that consist of little more than...

Jeez. Have I somehow never attempted to say that for three years? That seems hard to believe.

user315433
Took a long time, but I've more or less reached a dgaf state about what anyone has tried.

4:41 AM
@AlexisKing You've been trying to say some quite naughty phrases over the past few days. :P

@404 What’s your usual response? Downvote and move on? Cast a close vote? Just give them working code? I clearly tend to have little patience for handholding, but the question was just good enough for me to want to actually help but not good enough for me to spend time thinking about a useful comment.
@hichris123 Oh, don’t worry, I only found out about the invisible characters change from the handy-dandy stars board. ;)

user315433
I answer if it looks like a useful thing. Ignore if it looks localized, no matter how hard they try (e.g., a schoolteacher struggling to manage records in Google spreadsheet... sorry, not useful). Downvote if localized and lazy.

I just get a lot of homework questions in the tags I am interested in, and the volume of questions is so low that sometimes I am just desperate for something to answer, even if it’s not a terribly good question.
Homework questions aren’t even always bad if they have valid confusion that I think I can help out with (rather than just being “do my homework for me” questions). I just kinda need to know what people have tried to understand where they’re getting stuck.

user315433
If it's a copy of HW with no actual question about HW, I vote to close as unclear what you're asking.

That is usually my approach, either that or “too broad”.
Of course, the number of eyeballs on those questions is so low that even the worst sometimes don’t get closed. SO is a whole different experience in low-traffic tags.

@Quill no surprise, lots of crappy suggestions on MSE.

@Quill what about it? And it's kind of wrong (well, title is totally wrong), it counts comments in all answers, so just bring back questions with tons of answers.

@ShadowWizard ugh. I just closed stackoverflow.com/q/899102/561731 as a duplicate of the one I answered. That is a because I should not have been able to do that.... as the one I marked it as a duplicate of has no accepted answer, no?
or am I wrong @ShadowWizard ?
Also on that original question I did not realize that Karel was editing his own question

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA upvoted answer is enough. As far as SE is concerned, upvoted answer means "this is a valid, probably not bad, answer". :)
Accepting never meant much.

@ShadowWizard Ahh ok :-)

2:55 PM
@ShadowWizard why put images in comment tag?

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA not comment, quote. To distinguish them from the post body.
Doing it mostly with images having text, so that people won't think the text is part of the post...

@ShadowWizard I meant quote. But I have never seen that as any standard. Whats the reason? an image is an image. if it should be in a blockquote that should be in the site's css, no?

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA dunno, I've seen someone doing it on MSE, asked, got convinced, and doing it ever since. :)

Hi fellas

3:03 PM
Hi @jCuber
What brings you here? :)

Weell, I was hoping to find some more experienced edit reviewers here
I just recently hit 2000 points and have been reviewing some edits
Now, I'm mostly familiar with what kind of edits are acceptable, but there have been some code edits where the line has been a bit blurred
For example, adding in missing commas to a javascript object array which the editor clearly meant to have, but then also adding a missing parameter to a function call

@jCuber well, you got to the right place then. :)

@ShadowWizard great :)

@jCuber basically, any code change which isn't for formatting or indentation, or fixing a 100% obvious typo (NOT in question!!) is a bad idea and should be rejected.
But it's really case-by-case, do you have examples?

@ShadowWizard For example, this one: stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/11902366
The rendered output is misleading, there's actually just an addition of a closing parenthesis, not an addition of the parameter
I thought this edit was appropriate since the code changes really only include whitespace fixes and the commas

3:11 PM
@jCuber yeah, this is a rare case where the edit is OK.
I'm surprised nobody posted a comment "the code will give syntax error" in those years though.
@jCuber just curious, why different name on MSE?

@ShadowWizard I doubt anyone even ran the code in question, since the answer's emphasis is on the general method
@ShadowWizard oh, is it?
apparently SE name changes don't propagate to MSE :)

@jCuber yeah, noticed different name on Super User too. lol
@jCuber you can click the right button when editing profile, to copy the changes to all sites. :)

@ShadowWizard ah, there we go
test
:(

it takes a while for chat to reload

@jCuber still different here ;)

3:16 PM
@ShadowWizard sheeesh

Also the Language Learning proposal is still in commitment phase after reaching 100% like two weeks ago

@Quill average is 2 months I think, depends how busy the team is

for a site to go into private beta?

@ShadowWizard What do you think of this edit? stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/11900968

3:19 PM
@Quill yup. They need to appoint a CM which will be 100% available on the new site, need a new sub domain, etc.

@ShadowWizard can you unmark this as a duplicate? meta.stackexchange.com/q/277989/155556 because this is not true at all!
> This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please edit this question to explain how it is different or ask a new question.

Pretty destructive edit but I don't really know about this one, the React questions don't really have a version number

@ShadowWizard that doesn't sound like a two month process

How was that even allowed to be marked as a dupe?
That is a bug...

@Quill if all CM's are busy... :/

3:20 PM
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA how aren't they the same?

@hichris123 I'm sorry

@Quill I never said they werent. but look at the close reason. Normal people cannot close a question as a duplicate of another unless the other one has some answer.
If anything that one should be closed as a duplicate of mine

@jCuber too radical, rejected. Better leave a comment to author and let him edit, or post new answer
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA umm... no. Why? Just because you wrote it??
On Meta sites, it's totally OK for the dupe target to not have answers.
Reporting the same bug 1000 times, or requesting same thing 1000 times won't be any good and just pollute the site.

@ShadowWizard Then change the close reason text, because it is wrong.

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA this doesn't justify reopening.

3:25 PM
@ShadowWizard Can we reverse the close? my question actually has some sort of reasonable solution also the other one was asking for a different thing. Mine is asking for a page update to the current linked revision. The other is asking for a direct link to the revision on the revision list
Not the same :-)

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA will take a deeper look later, have to go now...
Usually @random isn't wrong though.
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA also, you plan to start that feature request about OP background color in revisions list?

6-8 weeks turns into 5 months...

Hm, my openstv installation works again. Maybe I was drunk when trying it last time, or something. (I do have python2 alias for 2.7, which it needs)

@gnat: I do think the proportion of upvoted to downvoted questions is a problem. But the culprit is not awful questions, which have gotten a lot of attention, but a noticeable decrease in upvoted questions. In other words, I doubt people would be much bothered by downvoted questions if there were plenty of interesting questions to look at instead. I know when I look at tags I have experience with, I have to spend a lot of time sorting through dreck to find something worth answering. — Jon Ericson ♦ 1 hour ago

Yes, upvotes are important. But I hate that casting an upvote costs me a downvote. Close/reopen, delete/undelete votes count separately. So should up and down.

Unwritten FR: change the voting limit to 40 up votes, 40 down votes. And get rid of 30+10 nonsense, btw
