4:02 AM
Before I go for the evening, I leave you with this thought:

Argh, damn you phone-induced speaker interference...my headache just loves those obnoxious sounds.

Night moot

Did I miss a chatcast?
Where's the teacher's lounge?

Ok, the programmers chat room has failed me. Anybody have a gift suggestion for my team of coworkers? Trying to think of a fun holiday gift. They're moving into new office space and the pool table request got denied. So thought maybe I could get something that would be a fun break.

4:14 AM
I'm lost :P

What'd they move it there for?

Fits better?

@RebeccaChernoff Alcohol.

Okay... but they didn't send us any email announcements or anything.

4:16 AM
Several USB rocket launchers?

@drachenstern Also a good idea. :D
And to be clear, those do exist.

@GeorgeEdison, there was an email sent out...but mention it over there.
Also, I need to have it by Tuesday...

Rovio!

Heh.
No remote workers, so doesn't seem as fun. (;

Buckyballs!!!

4:18 AM
USB rocket launchers!!! Go for it!!!

Ahhh hell, just about anything on thinkgeek :p

Very large rare earth magnets. Random people walking around with them in their pockets makes for an interesting office.

Two dozen 3' cardboard tubes (for swordfights)

If I order it tomorrow would I get it by Tuesday? |:
I've never ordered from ThinkGeek

@drachenstern: Pure genius.

4:19 AM
You should from thinkgeek. Twitter them

Hmm, though I'm not sure what the setup of the new office space is. Cube walls vvs real walls. I think there's a mixture.

Might be good to call early tomorrow to confirm ...

and they may be high wall cubes

Oh WTF WwF shakes fist

4:23 AM
New office goodies for holiday gifts and farewells ...

Hm, I'm unfortunately terrible at thinking up gift ideas... ponders anyway

@drachenstern Yeah, thought I'd do something a bit more than just a regular holiday gift (which last year was just gift cards to a restaurant for each person)

We'll compile a leather-bound anthology of rchernisms so that they have something to remember you by. ;)

Here is your perfect gift idea: atendesigngroup.spreadshirt.com/…
IE6 funeral shirts.

4:27 AM
Heheh

BOOO. The local news just covered the virtual sex game for Xbox Kinect. They talked a lot but all they showed while talking were replays from Black Ops.

@GeorgeEdison Not quite sure that could be a pool table replacement... (;

To be fair, it's a little hard to replace a pool table. :P

Heh. Well yes. But I think it is possible to get closer than a t-shirt. q:

Ah, of course. You should totally buy them Minecraft :p
I suppose that's true, heheh.

4:41 AM
its not dead im still using IE 6

Idk, that's all I got, but I'm quite the boy so don't know what to suggest

My coworkers are all male. (;

2 and 2 Tim. Good game.

I'm using my laptop as a space heater. It's under the blanket with me.

Then @rchern any sort of little toys will be good ;)

4:43 AM
@drachenstern Yeah, I decided to give up on that one on account of DPHGZ not really going together. :P

Hey! Who changed the Tavern's slogan?

@RebeccaChernoff Get them one of these:

@DanGrossman - Cool. Is it an HP laptop?

Yeah, why? Are they known for being hot?

HP Laptops get way too warm.
Yep :-)

4:48 AM
It's an HP Envy, all metal case, it's usually cold to the touch actually unlike plastic

It's how HP designs their hardware.
They pack everything in tight, so it heats up.

Hey, someone wana review my inspirational editorial?

@TylerChacha - sure, link please.
@DanGrossman - Nice piece. (Can it run Crysis? :D)

Yes :) Dual graphics cards, use the slower one on battery, the Radeon HD for games

4:50 AM
fixing the paragraphs as we speak so it is less of a blob

@DanGrossman - Nice!
@TylerChacha - ...
If you’re only after ‘Good’, you’re aren’t the type of person your teachers want you to be.

@Moshe There we go
How did you get so far down so quick?

Please explain that line. I'm confusing.
I skimmed ;-)
Just kidding.
I'm a quick reader.

If you're only after a 'Good' life, a 'Good' job, a 'Good' career... <insert rest of paragraph>

Why do I care what my teachers want?
It's about what I want, no?
I don't mean to sound selfish, but who is happy being "someone else's person"?
That sentence sounds like it contradicts your "thesis" which you put forth at the end.

4:55 AM
Well, coming from the culture I live in, lot's of people put pressure on students to get good grades, go to a good college, etc.

Which culture might that be, if I may ask?

I only say mine because I live in a sunck up snobby rich kid area
San Diego

I hear that.
On the other hand, it's good to be motivated.

I'm not advocating to not go to college or not to try hard at school

@TylerChacha - I know. I'm not taking your article that way.

4:58 AM
Good, because I said so in the last paragraph :)
Refresh for nicer spacing

Nice article, Tyler.
I got to get to bed.
Nite.

The hell? It's already midnight?

peace

G'night

@TimStone - Yes, in hell it may be midnight too...
:-D
Nite all.

5:01 AM
At least it is interesting... if I had written this this morning when we were suppose to none of this would have came out

Eesh.

I can't sleep because my brain won't stop designing a software enhancement nobody asked for.

nice

Close your eyes and run straight ahead until something solid stops you. Sleep well.

I thought committing the idea to paper might help.
By which I mean a word doc.

5:41 AM
Quick, downvote me now :P

Pretty much.

I wonder what happens when both sides play perfectly..

Heh.

5:44 AM
boredom.

Seriously though I want a volunteer to downvote me.
on SO

downvote someone else...
it'll lower your rep

Yeah.
I'm not big on that.

You can probably find answers of mine to downvote, I'm an ass

You aren't that bored?

5:46 AM
I guess there's obvious crap out there.
To downvote.

I just tried to put his code into code format

@DanGrossman O_O
@DanGrossman And that didn't crash WMD? :P

99% of it if not 100% was copied from some open source oauth class..
Darn, that doesn't show it. 1337 reputation.

That's just broken, apparently.

I can't see that, can you?

@RebeccaChernoff Ahem...

5:53 AM
stackflair.com has never worked for me

Nope.

@MichaelPetrotta It got replaced by my inspiration post and a post on indexes

Aha

@mootinator: how much will you pay me not to upvote you now?

5:55 AM
There's a bug in Stack Flair where if you aren't doing a combined flair, and you don't select another theme, the default theme isn't specified and there's an issue. It's on @RebeccaChernoff's to-fix list already, I think. :P

I've had my fun now.

I "fixed" that question by sticking the 800+ lines of code into a pastebin

@YiJiang I fixed it by closing it.

@TimStone I had a part in that too

Yeah, everyone went to a bit more effort than I did on that one, kudos all. :P

A: Question about Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server

mootinatorYou would use small packet size to tune for many short small transactions, and large packet size to tune for fewer large transfers. Tumbleweed.

What with the commenting and the pastebinning and such.

How does one find one's own first answer. For giggles and whatnot?

@mootinator Go to your profile and sort by Newest, and then go to the last page?

A: How can I determine if a string is within two strings if I don't know how it rolls over?

mootinatorAssuming those are hexadecimal numbers you should be able to convert them to a long (they're too big for a 32 bit int at 48 bits). long.Parse("0x" + serialnumber); Alternately, if you do know what the valid numbers are, and they aren't in a natural order, you can make a custom class, override ...

Dan GrossmanChange the action attribute of the form to submit to itself, not form #2. Only if your validation code passes do you redirect to form #2 with a location header().

Hmm. I think I'm proud of my first answer.

Very depressing tracking results :(
My package isn't moving and isn't expected until next week

"In Transit - Rescheduled"? Not sure I've ever had that status, heh.

That's what happens when a shipper notifies them of a shipment, then doesn't actually give it to them to pick up for more than 24 hours
original delivery estimate becomes wrong, rescheduled

Ah, lame.
Also, before I forget, happy birthday @TheUnhandledException

Weird

If anyone has any feedback on this first draft site mock-up, it would be appreciated:

Hmm :) I'm not sure if that's good or bad, hehe.

@Fosco The top bar hover needs to be more natural..
it feels akward
especially because the drop shadow on it is so close to the drop shadow on the entire nav bar
(Maybe drop the shadow and the gradient, making it simpler)
anyway, I'm going to bed

Thanks

Yi JiangI was looking through questions on MSO tagged 10k-tools, but when I hit the second page a lot of the questions were giving me this: Just a few examples: A deleted question that was locked doesn't appear in the "recently deleted" list Make the flag count disappear after flags are viewed in ...

Hmmmm... seems like they fixed it. Now what should I do about that question?

7:29 AM
@YiJiang should be fixed now

@YiJiang just let them answer your question with "It's fixed now"

status-completed

@MarcGravell You should have just pretended he was crazy and it was working the whole time. ;)

@TimStone Oy.

By the way, when did posting an question URL automatically cause the system to fill in the question title in it's place?
Also, when did the 'job' link in the tag pages linking to SO Careers appear?

@YiJiang A bit ago.

@YiJiang a long time ago. Do you really want the actual commit date?

7:35 AM
@MarcGravell Weird... I don't think I saw it before until today

According to the list o' feature changes.

A: Tag Sets on stackexchange.com now support email notifications

Julien GenestouxJeff, It would be so easy to build from the 'outside' if you guys made the RSS feeds pubsubhubbub! This way, people could build app that would act on callbacks (like, new answer for a questions's feed, new question in the feed for a special tag... etc). Much much more efficient.

I only use technologies whose names I can easily pronounce.

7:53 AM
@YiJiang Did you figure out what voodoo was being performed on that JavaScript?

@TimStone I still have absolutely no idea, but coercing the entire bracket into number seems to work
ie. return (t + ' (' + +(+f.offensive + +f.spam) + ')');

O_o

You can, of course, use parseInt or brackets if you want anyone to actually understand that code

That's so bizarre, heh.

i cant fall to sleep
it is annoying..

7:56 AM
@TimStone The + in front of the two variables and the inner bracket is for type coercion, the inner middle + is for addition, and the other ones are for concatenation

@YiJiang Oh, no, I understand that. I meant more that doing that caused it to be fixed whereas the original code wasn't working.

@TimStone I know. I still don't get it. It shouldn't make any difference

shakes fist at it

I have the code in it's entirety if you want... oh wait, you can't play around with it because you haven't got to 10k yet

Yeah, heh. I'll get back to you on that one. ;)

7:58 AM
I've tried isolating it, but it's impossible. Nothing seems to work the way this piece of code does
Which... could be quite an accomplishment - creating a piece of code that doesn't work like any other

Heheh, magic!

Just to make sure I went back and removed that + and bam! the thing turned from flag (4) to flag (40)

Hm, yeah, I can't seem to recreate that no matter what I do.

8:53 AM
@YiJiang are you by any chance in an international meeting building or something like that?
They do tend to come with flag overload

I can't seem to save my updated CV personal statement.

9:14 AM
@RobertKoritnik I can repro, but can't help you. :(
Have my upvote at any rate.

@radp Thanks for the upvote though... Hope someone resoves this soon

wall of text is always a tricky one
@Robert - I'll drop something to the team - but they work NYC time, so they aren't up yet

@yoda What about something like "show raw" or something which gives you just a plain text page of the code?
I always do my best to break long code into something readable. Fortunately, I spend fair chunk of time with tags like MySQL where it's relatively easy to do.

I can think of things involving moving it out-of-band, but it isn't trivial

@Jesse Hartwick, would help yes, but the main point regards the great amount of code that sometimes people chunk in the middle of a question making it harder to read.

What do you mean by "chunk in the middle"?
Got an example?

10:24 AM
my english isn't the best .. what I ment was having a fairly long question with large block of code as "examples", wich makes it harder to follow the point of the user

being those blocks splitted between sentences, for example .. not that usuall, but it happens sometimes.
anyway, the question was duplicated and the sollution declined

May I ask a favor from someone 10K? A search for an answer I think (or dream) I made and disappeared.... perhaps the question has been deleted

algorithms

ah

my English is as bad as my typing

10:45 AM
didn't understood though

:) OK

what does image algorithms have to do with meta?

Nope . the question is in SO. Sorry for the confusion. But in SO is very difficult to find someone in chat. And I don't want to post this in Meta .. it's noise

if I can help in anything, can add me on skype or something, to avoid answering it here : aeon.yoda

Stupid vanishing rep.
I left a tab open for my 'today recent' page when I went to bed last night. When I refreshed a minute ago, my rep changed (lowered, I think) and I don't know why.

10:51 AM
@Jesse Are you using SO Live! by any chance?

@yoda Sent

@radp SO Live!?

@JesseHartwick Okay, so you're not. There's a kinda similar bug with it I can't repro
Just look at your envelope page, events are timestamped there

@radp Nope. Never heard of it.
The envelope is the page I was talking about.
It shows me @50 rep for the day, same as it was when I went to bed.
My /reputation page doesn't show anything odd either, at least not for yesterday, which is the only day I can remember with any accuracy.

cache problem?

10:54 AM
@yoda No idea. Not a big problem. Just slightly puzzling.
I've got an extra 10 rep I can gain back just by running a recalc (that was there yesterday, btw, and I know exactly what caused it), so it'll all balance out.
Could be someone unaccepted an answer or something. No big deal, especially if it was one of my upvoted accepts.
I hate those now. They get in my way of getting Tenacious and Unsung, which are my new goals.

lol, you answer just for the points?

@yoda If I answered just for the points, I wouldn't leave the long, detailed answers I do.
No, I answer mostly for me, actually. It's quite a good way to learn, and I like helping folks.

11:25 AM
just checking :)

No worries. I'm actually quite proud of my answers. There have been a couple times I've seen a straightforward question with a bunch of short-but-accurate answers, decided to answer anyway, and got the accept.
Now, this also puts me in the position where I then spend two days answering "but that didn't work" comments and troubleshooting the hell out of it to find out what the OP really wanted to know, but thems the breaks.

I'm not begging for upvotes, but does every horizontal line here span exactly the width of the <pre> box?

@YiJiang The 0s and the Is are aligned. It's the black brick characters that drop down a bit.

@radp The bottom of the blocks are lower than bottom of the letters

@YiJiang They're box drawing characters, so it's bydesign.
