They obviously don't know what they're talking about.

@hichris123 Basically, yes. During the Enlightenment, anybody who was anybody knew Ancient Greek and Latin, and then soon thereafter people who had only studied Latin grammar without studying the evolution of English pronouns from Old to Modern English decided that things that didn't fit the Latin model in English were wrong.
This was especially bad during the 19th century. Victorians and all.
No linguist worthy of the name calls something used by a substantial fraction of native speakers "wrong". Rather, they try to understand it.
Does that make sense?

Yeah. Thanks for that. :)
Random question of the day, @tchrist: how did you happen to be a programmer and a linguist?

1:57 AM
Sure. The price of freedom from prescriptivist poppycock is eternally batting away the foolish sling stones of outrageous nincompoops.
@hichris123 Encoding systems.
I don't purport to be anything, really.
I hope my arguments can stand on their own merit, not on authority.
Probably because the two D&D character classes I most liked to play when I was in junior high school were magic-users and elves, because I liked to be able to do wondrous things nobody else could do, and Gary gave elves a language bonus.
But that was probably obvious. :)

@hichris123 My SO gold badges in Perl and Regex took more work, and I'm quite close to one in Unicode, which is rather uncommon.
With ELU, I merely have to persuade, not perform.
There are only six Trusted Users on both ELU and SO, and I’m the only 50k'er on both.
Jon Purdy and Joe Hanna both have interesting things to say.
Enough that it makes you want to go out drinking with them. :)
