A year later, the answer is obvious. (It was obvious earlier, too)

Can we get a moderator to the C++ Lounge? There is someone who is randomly flagging everything and we're hitting our vote limits trying to counter-flag.

user259867
Looks like only @ThiefMaster is an SO mod here.

I think we might need an employee actually. I heard that mods can't see who flagged once the flag is cleared.
The flagging abuse that's been going on is reaching a boiling point.

@Mysticial old messages?

user259867
I guess @JonEricson is most likely to respond of those present.

No, new ones. There was a period of a few minutes where every single message with the word "fuck" was indiscriminately flagged.
And now, random things are getting flagged regardless of content.
I've already exhausted my counter-flag limit for the day. And I presume other lounge regulars are reaching that limit as well.

1:00 AM
@Mysticial That... doesn't seem like an abuse of flags.
Looking at the starred messages in that room, it seems like y'all are trolling the flaggers. Maybe not do that?

@JonEricson Let's just say that we were quite annoyed at the flagging.
Not just the room, guys from the other room were also coming in.
Anyways, I've gotten your attention to it. So I'll let you take whatever action is necessary. I assume you can see everything including the flagging history and stuff.

@Mysticial They know everything.

If you're feeding flaggers flaggable content then wonder why they're flagging…
2
I checked the room, I can see why somebody might be annoyed with the content.

@bjb568 If someone is doesn't like the room's content, they should do a private moderator flag rather than mass flagging everything.

user259867
@hichris123 I found this somewhat confusing.

user259867
1:11 AM
Granted, this does not say much given my level of knowledge of git.

@Mysticial Right, of course, but flagging legitimately rude content isn't wrong

@NormalHuman It's basically just the name and email you want Git to associate your commits with. If you enter the same email as your GitHub account, then it links your commits with your account. They didn't exactly describe it well, though...

user259867
But so far, I was (apparently) able to keep my email private while contributing to SD.

user259867
(There's an option for that in github.com config)

@NormalHuman It shows up in the git shell (if you do git log). So... it's not exactly private, but you have to go looking for it to find it.

1:18 AM
Another chapter of "Why I don't use clients that need my email..." through my mail is public, since I sent bugs to BTS

@hichris123 IIRC @NormalHuman uses the noreply.github.com email that GitHub gives you

@KevinBrown Maybe for newer commits, but a gmail address showed for an older commit.

user259867
Oh I didn't read the fine print back in the days...

user259867
> We will use normalhuman@users.noreply.github.com when performing web-based Git operations and sending email on your behalf. If you want command line Git operations to use your private email you must set your email in Git.

user259867
Well, it's not like it's a top secret...

@hichris123 yeah, can't say I really searched

1:42 AM
@bjb568 Yes, flagging legitimately rude content is fine - that's what they're for. But when someone starts flagging everything from mildly rude to harmless, that crosses a line.
And if someone legitimately takes offense to casual use of the word "fuck", the internet is probably not the best place for them.

how long is a long enough time to let a meta community come to a consensus before acting on the question at hand? I'm wondering because I've asked meta.dba.stackexchange.com/questions/1314/…, but don't want to usurp the community by assuming concensus too soon.

@austinian I'd wait at least two full timezone cycles (48 hours)

user259867
@austinian 8 hours is not enough. Also, what action do you envision?

I was thinking something closer to a week minimum. The action I envision is to contact the phpMyAdmin mailing list with a link to the meta letting them know that there's a more appropriate/receptive community for questions their users might ask
since many of their users aren't devs

user259867
Uninstalled GH/Win. Slow, complicated, and I don't even have a reason to use it... not developing anything for Windows.

also, I'm in the tavern, and my beer glass is empty, so I envision that it will be refilled in a timely manner, timely meaning much sooner than the time it takes for a consensus to be reached

2:19 AM
We ran out during the last spam wave

I'm wondering why people downvote this that badly meta.stackoverflow.com/q/302436/792066

@Braiam Beats me, I don't understand I got two quick downvotes here either

maybe someone thinks Steam and InputStream ain't the same thing... I don't know Java either
> I heard that humans are able to exert more strength when they’re shouting. I never tried it before, but I can say that that’s the truth after experiencing this for myself.

I have a gold badge in Java. My question has nothing to do with the Java part of it, that much is obvious, it has to do with the high views and score of the two posts and I don't know what we should do, just mark one as dupe of other and move on? Which?

3:40 AM
@durron597 lets put something very clear, votes/views are but a trifle matter in quality terms (and people that fails audits are very aware of it). When deciding for a master, you are looking for the best Q/A pair possible. A good question with a good answer, or a good answer with an ok (but never misleading) question

@durron597 gets even weirder because one's a community wiki

@Braiam Both questions and answers are kind of crappy

there you go, then make one yourself ;)

They're sufficient for the people googling

@Braiam ooh, which one shows up higher in google search results?

3:42 AM
@austinian doesn't matter

@Braiam And get downvoted to oblivion for what seems like rep piracy?

@durron597 huh? why? You are but improving a poorly answered/asked topic

fine, mark the community wiki as the dupe then
and then edit the one you don't mark as the dupe to make it less crappy

Well, let me take that back; the sum total of all the answers of both questions satisfactorily cover the topic
just the individual answers aren't very good.

that "cover the topic" doesn't mean that they do it in a sensible way, where the reader gets more questions as they are reading
@durron597 that's a good point to make your own pair Q/A

3:46 AM
you could flag it for merging, instead of dupe

@austinian again, we are trying to look for quality here, not just a hard fast action

right, merge the answers, let the community decide on quality factors, both questions are comparable, and can be edited to be better
the answers are atrocious, but, bah, I just can't read them anymore
I need an adult.
