Shit, I don't have that many people to have that kind of separation of job duties.

I usually let developers have RO access to production for viewing logs, data, et cetera.
Readonly is key.
Unusual situations may justify unusual access but justification is key. shrug.

Well I think with us a few will have "root"
Geoff has been doing a lot of sysadmining, and happens to be pretty damn good at it
Here is the trick I think. The best devs to have access are the ones that don't want it :-)

Depends on the systems for us - internal systems developers have full access (but it is a small team). On our customer facing system, QA actually has access for handling deployments.
It's not your typical QA department, they actually work quite closely with operations

It is largely numbers as well. 3 Developer teams all having root access to the servers ... they will start to step on each other's toes as well I think

That's a cool workflow, Doug. I like the idea of QA doing production deployments.
I don't like full time telecommuting but I usually work from home a few times a month. I like being in the office, otherwise I'd do it more.
Very true, Kyle. Startups get to break the rules. It's important to have the right foundation to enable the "right way" later though.
It took me years to get devs out of prod but we're not startup anymore.

The lunches at fog creek (where SO eats) make going to the office quite appealing I think :-)

(me == CTO too.)
Ah, nice.. I sent Fog Creek my resume a couple years ago. Not sure about living in NYC though.
I've bought a house since.

2:33 PM
We've had the dev/prod access debate at work. It took some shouting, but for the most part our devs don't abuse their write-access into prod. All it takes is one high-profile screwup to reinstate any discipline lacks.

Q: Efficient, Large Data Access Solutions (noob)

PhilI have a self-hosted web site that allows users to log in and view data stored in different files across a network. The web server is running a service that accesses the data and sends it to the users. The setup is simple: The web server is a dedicated machine, networked with other data servers ...

Same here sysadmin. Our devs do not make changes to the system without asking us first or usually just asking us to do it.

don't you have any problem with audit ?

It's good working with smart people sometimes :)
Not really, changes are all logged the same
We all use individual accounts, so devs are really treated no different than admins

I'm going to have to pass that Jeff blog-post around at the office when I get in. It's great.

2:38 PM
On customer-facing side though, it is completely different...

@radius Audit... we would. In fact, we recently got dinged on our lack of change-management procedures. So Change Is In The Wind.

Just the beneifts of working in a smaller group
Either of you practice or implementing ITIL?
or other itsm framework?

What is this ...framework... thing of which you speak?

How do you see if someone from dev changed something in apache config ?
We use ITIL yes

How do you see if an admin did?

2:39 PM
I know what that stuff is, but organizationally we don't. That will likely change.

I did not
of course if there is a problem we can check with previous backup
and know who did the change
but I don't see a way to track the change

Many cases it has to be manual

change itself is not logged
ok

If developers can't follow the process, well then they aren't going to stick around long

for network device we do have a change tracking, but it's much easier on network device

Q: Memory for crash kernal (0x0 to 0x0) not within permissable range

RicWhen booting Centos 5.5 on a vmbox running on windows XP I get the following message. Memory for crash kernal (0x0 to 0x0) not within permissable range

Kernal ?

Has anyone had any experience running a reasonably heavily used SVN server from a VM? Any issues?

I have run fairly active ones from tiny openvz vms
SVN doesn't take much power

seems that VirtualBox use kernal word...

2:48 PM
That's good to know, certain people here are a bit paranoid about it's disk access and a VM slowing it down, but I would have thought it was ok

and he can't use google too

@SamCogan We've managed to use Exchange inside a VM without issues, so SVN should be a breeze. Depends on storage capabilities, though.

Fair enough, actual amount of storage is not an issue, so that should be fine.

Is the accomplishment having Exchange working or the VM part ? ;)

2:57 PM
Yeah, it's all in the I/O operations count.
Heh, the VM part. Exchange 2007 has been very stable for us. It IS a memory pig, though.

I ran Cacti with something like 100k data collector a long time ago on a VM
I think nothing else is worse in term of I/O

Time to go to work...

I actually quite like Exchange, crazy I know, but that may have something to do with it not being Lotus Notes. It is a Memory pig though!

Hello

pjz
somehow I missed the existence of this place until now

ditto

I only saw it on MSO

hadn't been to meta for ages, and saw the link up there in the Accounts page

8:00 PM
It is still in beta... Supposely there will be a chat.serverfault in the future

I think @Warner may have "built" this channel
oh and @Zoredache also

pjz
Ah. I saw the pointer to a chat room and figured it would point to an IRC channel or something so was suprised at this

Yeah, back when it was in beta in early/mid July.

Warner built the channel... Later he added me as a second owner...

pjz
is it gated to IRC or XMPP or anything?

8:01 PM
Hmmm... downvote for repwhoring. The eternal question

@pjz, no... and there are lots of requests on meta.so asking for that

pjz
@Zoredache, heh well I guess it's not an original thought. The way it's built, those would have to be 'lower resolution' I think.

Is anyone working on the "tag wiki" yet?

We have a few set up, but they're not well fleshed out. Warner has been doing some work.

@jscott It would be nice if we could import wikipedia automatically on a lot of tags as a starting point

8:07 PM
Do we really want to just duplicate what is already in wikipedia?

@DougLuxem Right? I wanted to browse through SO's to get feel for expectations

Not really, but a lot of the basic info would be (I think)

But I though SF might have it's own bent on wiki-zied definitions.

pjz
some way to auto-link to a webized manpage source would be good too (I end up linking to linux.die.net a lot)

The tag wikis might be a good spot to notate 'greatest-hits' kinds of questions. Such as the famous Evan Anderson subnetting question.

8:09 PM
@sysadmin1138 That's a good idea

@sysadmin1138 +1

Also, canonical answers to common questions.

@pjz, there was some a recent meta.so feature requests asking for a feature like that. Basically they wanted a per-site glossary, that would be used to define common terms and would auto-link or highlight on defined terms

@sysadmin1138 I had asked about that exact thing on MSF.

@jscott I think I remember the question ;)

geez

8:12 PM
Yeah, I remember that one going by.

100 score or in the top 20

Tag wikis can be edited by users with more than 2000 reputation, provided:

They are in the top 20 answerers for this tag or
They have a total score of 100 or more for this tag

Where's the wiki?

Isn't too clear on that
bah
"or"

pjz
@Zoredache, I was just thinking of the way a lot of wikis let you define an external link keyword and format so you can do just [man:foo] and it will autolink that to the webized manpage via whatever site is okay with that. Also the extra level of indrection allows for that site to be changed in the future if need be.

8:13 PM
checking eye sight now....

/* ignore

@Izzy Example: Tag wiki for "backup" serverfault.com/tags/backup/info

Ick, they moved things around.

doh, nothing there. "linux"? serverfault.com/questions/tagged/linux

@jscott Got it now - I've never really been one for paying any attention to the tags. I set up some to highlight way back when, and pretty much ignore them :)

8:14 PM
I understand over on SO tags are one of the only ways to filter things so the firehose is drinkable. We're not nearly that busy.

pjz

@Zoredache thanks for that!

Wow, very few tags I can edit. :(
I don't qualify on most of my top tags.

If you write something up good, post it here or in a question on meta or something...
I am sure one of us can post it on your behalf

ok

Ah, I was expecting to see that info next to all of my tags in my profile somewhere

Figure out a direction the site should go

I vaguely remeber Kara talking about this in the past, but I am not sure if it was in chat or on meta

In fact - bugger it! See ya!
