Q: Break into Windows 7?

Peter MI'm not sure if this a serverfault or superuser question. A client of mine shipped me a Windows 7 box that I am supposed to work on. Unfortunately the machine is joined to his domain (which I cannot access - legally or physically) and the local administrator account appears to be disabled. Is ...

A: Break into Windows 7?

RookThis boot disk will allow you to change the administrative password on a Windows 7 machine. Make sure you call the guy and ask if this is okay! I have used it on older versions of windows and it works like a charm. Also note that some viruses disabled the admin account on purpose to make it ...

lol

heh
Parents basement script kiddie, justfiying how it's perfectly acceptable to hack your clients PC to get local admin
Do I keep feeding the troll

OMG... there's been this random sound on my computer and didn't know where it was coming from. I just noticed it's my browser on this chat room every time there is a post. FAIL!

Q: Linode Private IPs

mattbastaHey folks I'm trying to get private IPs set up with my Linodes. I'm running Debian. Here's my Linode's Network tab: eth0: 69.164.214.146 ( li129-146.members.linode.com ) Gateways: 69.164.214.1 Netmask: 255.255.255.0 Private eth0: 192.168.140.217 Net...

@l0c0b0x, lol

pjz
Izzy: don't feed the trolls; you're both entitled to your opinion

@pjz I know, i know.

This is a question that'll be getting attention from the PasswordReset spammers in short order. It helps that it isn't in the password tag.

pjz
It's biarre to me that anyone is worred about rook's response. The question is: 'Is there anyway that I can get into the system and enable/create a local account with administrator level rights given that I have physical access' which to me basically calls for some minor hacking or booting to single user or the like

9:39 PM
@pjz You're right
@pjz Personally, it was his attitude that rubbed me the wrong way

pjz
enh, attitude over flat text is not to be trusted
don't attribute to malice that which can be stupidity, or to stupidity that which can be attributed to poor communication.

@izzy yeah his attitude stinks, makes me angry too, but he's never going to agree with our view

Q: Whats a good DNS service with an API

bwizzyDoes anyone know a good DNS hosting service that has an API and gives you a reasonable amount of domains / zones for the price? I'm setting up a hosting service & want to script the creation of the DNS entries through a web app. Right now our DNS is hosted with Slicehost.com where they ha...

If what he says is true and he is a software developer in aerospace, if I was his employer I would be pretty pissed if I found out he was writing exploits in his spare time, if he actually is.

pjz
Why? (Presuming the exploits aren't of your code) ?

9:47 PM
Because it says to me that your not trustworthy, if your trying to break your way into other software, who's to say your not putting in some backdoor or exploit in the software your writing for me. But that's just how I'd feel about it, don't expect everyone to feel the same, and I guess exploit writers would have to be very dynamic thinkers

@pjz The correct, professional, answer was Squillmans. That validated the question.
Hilarious - he's SYN flooding me off the site

@SamCogan It seems to me that the exact opposite would be true...
If you are motiviated enough to look for problems in other peoples code, then you would expect others to be inspecting code you developed yourself.

@SamCogan Couldn't agree more

pjz
@SamCogan I think you're shooting the messenger and indulging in guilt by association, but that's just me.

@zoredache well I guess it depends, if your just looking for holes in other code and pointing these out so that they can be fixed, or at least make people aware of the security holes in their software then that is one thing, and to be applauded, if your taking advantage of these holes for your own gain or to cause mischief then that's another

pjz
9:52 PM
@SamCogan right, the difference between whitehat and blackhat is in use and intent of the ability to ignore security systems

@SamCogan following on from that, if you're doing it to gain notoriety (which he so obviously is by the incessant bragging) they are definitely not to be trusted

pjz
@SamCogan which is why it's okay to do the boot disk thing if you ask first, but not if you don't.
@Izzy why does that follow? Notoriety isn't illegal or even immoral really...

Q: Rack Mount for a 3Com 4210 switch

GordonDoes anyone know where I can get a rack mount kit for a 3Com 4210 9 port switch. Needs to fit into a 19" rack

@pj exactly, and some of these software companies are as much at fault for ignoring known problems in there software as the people who take advantage of them, so maybe my comment was a little out of line without knowing what this

@pjz It's the intent. If you spend that much time poking around trying to break things, out of a genuine, obsessive, fascination with the way things work, that's one thing. When you do it to garner respect and fame, the result is usually a total lack of scruples

9:54 PM
Person is doing with the exploits, but the impression I got was not a good one.

@pjz in other words, someone who would pawn their grandmother

@pjz yes, if they had called the company, and they had explained what they could do to get round the problem, and it's consequences and the company had agreed, then that is fine, however doing it without there consent would, in my mind, be a big no no.

pjz
@Izzy I think that's a bit broad - one doesn't imply the other. Seeking fame - the approval of others - is very basic - you'd like a reputation as being good at what you do, right? Heck, it's the basic metric at ServerFault - reputation!

I just can't understand how they sent the computer without thinking about it, and he didn't think to ask them about access ahead of time...

@pjz Fair point. Although I quit caring about rep a long while ago :)

pjz
9:59 PM
@SamCogan right, like when I used an analogue of the U-lock Bic hack to unlock the drives in a NAS that the previous admin had lost the key to... he was right there in front of me and was at a loss and I suggested "let me try this..." and it worked. +rep for me :)

@Izzy, on serverfault, or in life?

pjz
/me tests emotes.

@Zoredache har de har har :) SF. I already had 1.5 jobs (the .5 being my girlfriend) - last thing I needed was another job

sorry, no emotes

This does do markdown though.

@Zoredache and it was definitely turning into a job

you can use most inline markdown. So bold italics, fixed-width.

Q: Windows Experience Index = 7.9, then what?

Tony_HenrichSay you get 7.9, which is the maximum score with windows Experience Index, with your current hardware. Next year the hardware is faster. If you already got the max score, what does it mean to upgrade to faster hardware? Will 7.9 be an obsolete irrelevant score? Will windows not take advantage of ...

Q: Sendmail friendly name setting
