I don’t think that moderation is much acceptable.
Well I appreciate at least saying that. you++
But the MSE post you made doesn’t seem to be an attempt at getting clarifications about anything related to the strike. It does however seem like an attempt at getting out a complaint about the past moderation over your username. It should be quite obvious that having a username which opposes the strike, is perfectly acceptable. I’d rather support any such post you make if you’re just direct about it.
Many are changing their username to support the strike. I'm asking if I'll be banned if I change my username to oppose the strike. Seems permissible to me, seeing as I've been previously banned for opposing a policy in my name (apartheid) for a full year
It's not clear to me that the name you used was opposing a policy, that probably didn't help the case
It makes no sense whatsoever to ban you over having a username in opposition to the strike, especially not the way you worded it. It’s not comparable to the case about political opinions, because it’s different, and the reason chosen for finding you in violation previously, isn’t even in the area of applicability for the proposed username against the strike.
That said, I would of course prefer that you support the strike, though that’s a different matter. I’m striking, but I cannot force my opinions onto you. I’d like you to have the same opinion, but not through force.
17:10
@EvanCarroll awesome. Sadly you didn't bother to read it.
It clearly says the action taken was to reset your name, not to suspend you.
@EvanCarroll The moderation that happened previously was just unreasonable, and even if it was, a 1 year ban is far beyond what I’d consider necessary. But it’s not related to this strike.
If you change again that's already reason for suspension.
Thanks for making it super clear your suspensions were correct, @Evan.
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack "We have temporarily suspended your account you may return after 365 days"
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack See the last sentence.
@EvanCarroll because it's repeated offense.
17:12
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack He knows that, and he knows he didn't get suspended without warning - for a year! - just because he changed his username. There is a predictable escalation pattern that you will see if you review Evan's history across the network.
no it's not... i got suspended for having the name "Israel is an apartheid state" only once.
and the reason was just the name.
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Even if repeated, I wouldn’t call it an offense. I don’t think the moderation was correct in the first place.
@curious name alone might not, but add profile About Me, and you get bigotry which is already against policy.
> obstinate or unreasonable attachment to a belief, opinion, or faction, in particular prejudice against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group.
see what I mean, people ask for evidence and then you give it to them and then it's not about the evidence or the thing they wanted to talk about it's about a "predictable escalation pattern that you will see if you review Evan's history across the network".
this is why this network is better without moderators.
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack oh I saw it and totally would have flagged it if I hadn't been on strike :)
17:14
But I’d be careful to point the fingers at the moderators. By Cody, under one of your recent posts:
> You surely are aware that the vast majority of people who have spanked your hand in the past were staff members, not elected moderators, right?
they don't like you, so they think they have a reason to ban you -- regardless of the rules.
@EvanCarroll the lie makes a loud sound, you know.
When you demonstrate a repeated pattern of offensiveness, yes, the punishment gets harsher for you. You reap what you sow.
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack It would help to know what was in the profile description.
@AndreasdetestsAIhype I'm afraid that detail won't be shared.
17:16
please share it!
provide that evidence, you're all on strike because you want transparency... be transparent!
@EvanCarroll I didn't take screenshots from your offensive periods, but looks like you did, so you can share.
@AndreasdetestsAIhype FWIW they got bonked for that IIRC
so you're basically just alleging things without evidence ... AGAIN.
I stand by my conclusion that this moderation based on the name, is unacceptable. But as long as I don’t know the profile description content, I cannot have a stance about that.
this is your "predictable escalation pattern" where you ask me to disprove a point you haven't made.
17:17
I strongly suggest we switch topics
@EvanCarroll memory evidence, including offensive comments directed at me, so yeah.
@curious how's the weather?
@AndreasdetestsAIhype In the case of the China/Russia protesting guy (if I'm recalling who you were referring to correctly) there was some Nazi imagery involved (now removed)
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack smokey! and you?
@Spevacus Yeah, I know Ciro has been in hot water over his profile, but I support him in it.
@curious warm but not very hot, enjoying last days without heat waves.
Though we already had a big one. :(
(warm means ~30 celcius ;))
17:19
why is ciro beinng brought into this, CIro means to do the network harm. I do not.
I wouldn't even take a stance on banning Ciro. I could go either way on it.
@Spevacus I think I remember something about that, but it depends on the way it was used. I don’t accept a blanket ban on certain content. It depends on the context. Though some content is likely to be inappropriate in most contexts.
@EvanCarroll just as example to being banned over display name.
We had this really weird weather in end of May/early June... First attempt at garden froze, second attempt dried to its death (all within two weeks or so)
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack ah finally, celsius, something I can relate to ;)
@curious yeah, same here, it's becoming really extreme. Global warming is a thing, probably. :(
Yesterday it was 92 deg F (33 C) here - Now it's 66 F (18 C) - Really weird flip-flopping.
17:20
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack you realize how insane this analogy is, no one is taking a stance that you can put anything in your display name.. Ciro was trying to get SE banned in China by stuffing blacklisted keywords in the display name. He wasn't making a political stance. He was trying to exploit a firewall.
and he was successful. and he was proud of it.
@curious yeah, Israel is like USA in many things, but we measure things like in Europe. ;)
Down in Texas and other parts of the southwestern US they're experiencing absolutely ridiculous, record-breaking high temps, it's getting out of hand.
@EvanCarroll and what makes you proud?
oh dang it's 20:20 need to go bath the kid(s). Cya!
@Spevacus yeah even Norway becoming hot. :/
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack I'm not a prideful person. I'm very humble. People say generally that I do that better then anyone they know.
@EvanCarroll Not Ciro’s fault that China has an authoritarian, totalitarian system which includes a firewall against everything that risks educating its people. That’s unrelated to this case. That’s not why I brought him into it. I did it over the political stance, and writing about it in the username and the profile. That said, I don’t have anything more that I can contribute with on this topic.
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Painful.
17:25
Ciro should be allowed to say what ever he wants about China in his profile name and take a political stance. I'm cool with that. But he shouldn't be allowed to exploit a firewall by stuffing keywords in it for that purpose.
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack The Americans and Brits have this weird way of measuring stuff.
@EvanCarroll That’s not a very humble thing to say. :P
it's like trying to get StackExchange delisted from Google and Facebook by fooling automated mechanisms with vaccine skepticism. It's possible, but it's not a legit expression. It's an exploit.
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack If I die soon, it’s because I melted.
@AndreasdetestsAIhype Aww :(
Don't melt!
It's such a nasty way to go, I can recommend some that are better if necessary ;)
Damn, please do. I might need them one of these days. Anything’s better than this slow torture.
@EvanCarroll I might have this discussion with you another day, but it’s too much of an investment at this moment. :)
I agree on the slow torture though. It's too hot here too
@Tinkeringbell Sounds fun. :D
Better than melting at least :)
I should go swim these days…
17:34
i am in Houston. it's like 93 now or something. slightly chilly. yesterday was like 110. supposed to get to 110 today too.
OMG
my temperature is ~25 now
sounds horrible.
But... it's Celsius! :D
oh that suddenly sounds terrible
why would you ever do that
@EvanCarroll do what?
17:39
use Celsius'
I miss the days with -15°C. Just a few more months now, and they’ll be back. We’ll probably get some days with -25°C again too. That’s a bit cold, but still nice.
@EvanCarroll that is very humble of you to say.
@EvanCarroll I'm not in US or UK
@AndreasdetestsAIhype indeed!
@AndreasdetestsAIhype I'll put you in a jar and stack into a freezer then. :D
17:46
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack >:( Are you gonna eat me too?
@AndreasdetestsAIhype Jesus on a stick, no! Just use you to make ice cubes for my coffee every evening. ;)
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack You must have a taste for bad stuff.
@AndreasdetestsAIhype that's what my kids keep saying when I eat weird things they'll never consider eating themselves. :P
e.g. eggplant spread.
@AndreasdetestsAIhype I still need to clean my kiddie pool and put fresh water in again
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Looks yummy.
@Tinkeringbell But I have an ocean nearby. :P
18:02
@AndreasdetestsAIhype it is!
@AndreasdetestsAIhype Oooh, better!
🚽
@KevinB only after 6-8 hours.
18:33
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack 🥴🤢
There's that age, 30 years or something, when people start eating weird stuff
19:22
@M.A.R. not for me. I blame army service, where I had no choice but to eat weird stuff, so it kind of stuck. :D
19:36
Lots of old timers come and go, even @Blue
Yeah, I come by every now and again, when SE does something monumentally stupid
@Blue hehe so that's a lot. ;(
Well I really think this is the final blow. At least for me.
No matter what SE will do, and even if strike will be over, trust can't be regained. Don't know if I'll be able to stay.
It's like staying to live together with a cheating spouse.
Chats are like being in a different room which can work for a while. ;)
(aka chats are what keeping me around, and I let myself have fun in them. Here, in the Den, and Meta Room on SO.)

I mean: When they basically cleaned house a while back, and let go all the pillars of the community like Tim Post, I knew it was the beginning of the end for stackexchange. Unfortunately, money pretty much trumps all, and once you get people in board positions that only care about money, everything else pretty much goes out the window
It just breaks my heart: Stackoverflow was/is such a useful resource, but it relies on the community to maintain. Once they leave, it'll just be a remnant of it's glory days.
19:55
Yes and no. Tim actually left on his own as far as I know, other pillars, no less important, were kicked out in shame though because they dared to object management. As for money that is correct, but could be used in much better ways without destroying the community.
If SE would have gathered feedback, for real, about how to use AI to make the network better, if they would have worked with the community about this, things could be so much different now, and better.
But blog post saying "We are about to make AI projects" then few weeks later "AI projects are here, oh, and we had to fire 10% of the employees to do that", all this with zero communication with community, that's what led to what we see today, and can't be fixed.
20:09
$$
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Tim did leave of his own accord, but one reason for leaving, which he disclosed in Discord, was that he was told if he could not find a way to reduce the human cost of maintaining the network, that he would need to find a way to shut it down.
21:01
:(
Sad face. That's all I have to say about this.
@Tinkeringbell The ocean is quite cold up here, though.
21:33
Are we still on a strike? I popped in here a couple of days ago and that's about it. i had a question get like 18 points on june 8th but that's about it
Yes. The strike concerns have not yet been addressed.
22:02
@AndreasdetestsAIhype same for any water here
Had a spree of drownings lately
