@forestdistrustsStackExchange you ask where to ask on meta :D

@JourneymanGeek I was hoping someone might know here so I don't have to look like a noob by asking. :P

snort
We're all noobs somewhere

though - wouldn't that be really broad unless you're talking about specific algorithms on specific types of data?

Specific data types, but not specific algorithms. The majority of genomics data is a genetic sequence and associated metadata.
I'm curious to know what kinds of gains beyond LZMA are possible with specially-tailored algorithms.

(I'm spitballing here. I know less about computer science than the average educated sea cucumber)

In bioinformatics and biochemistry, the FASTA format is a text-based format for representing either nucleotide sequences or amino acid (protein) sequences, in which nucleotides or amino acids are represented using single-letter codes. The format also allows for sequence names and comments to precede the sequences. The format originates from the FASTA software package, but has now become a near universal standard in the field of bioinformatics.The simplicity of FASTA format makes it easy to manipulate and parse sequences using text-processing tools and scripting languages like the R programming...
> For example, the algorithm MFCompress[10] performs lossless compression of these files using context modelling and arithmetic encoding. For benchmarks of FASTA files compression algorithms, see Hosseini et al., 2016,[11] and Kryukov et al., 2020.[12]
Oh, this is interesting.
> The encryption of FASTA files has been mostly addressed with a specific encryption tool: Cryfa.[13][14] Cryfa uses AES encryption and enables to compact data besides encryption. It can also address FASTQ files.
Never trust biologists to write secure software.
> Cryfa uses advanced encryption standard (AES) encryption combined with a shuffling mechanism, which leads to a substantial enhancement of the security against low data complexity attacks.

Just as today, we can get knowledge to developers at the right place and time, we think we can deliver learning at just the right place and time. We believe we can make a huge impact with education and by potentially getting into the certification game.

@Luuklag yes! You did it! :D

@ShadowTheKidWizard You're out of touch :D

7:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek nobody's willing to touch me :(
OK, most pings are here, some just came before and I didn't scroll up yet. :D
@starball I don't think it's the same. Visiting the http:// version is broken, until you visit the https:// version, and then the browser "remembers" that there is https and do you a "favor" by redirecting on its own. The version of SO Status Page without www. is still broken for me, will be broken forever, browser doesn't try to redirect to the working version.
@MetaAndrewT. yeah, still weird. And not spam IMO.
@DavidPostill no? It has been deleted.
Oh, maybe the mod reopened and then deleted, but I don't think that was the OP goal.
They meant to reopen and keep it around.
Though with such behavior of the OP, better have it this way. Clean goodbye.

8:49 AM
That's not spam and not rude and I don't feel like checking who thinks it is.
People getting too trigger happy?
@Journeyman @Tink this question isn't great, but it does have useful answer. Can you please remove the wrong spam flags and undelete?

Nah. It was a spammer.
Not sure what the thinking behind that post was... trying to get some 'positive' activity, maybe?
But it was a spammer, and the account is destroyed and that post can stay deleted :)

@Tinkeringbell maybe but that post isn't spam, no matter how hard you look at it.

@ShadowTheKidWizard meta.stackexchange.com/q/230168/369802 < Plagiarised from there :)

If a user becomes a spammer after several years and thousands of posts, we delete all their posts???

metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/396733 < Actual spam from the same account.
@ShadowTheKidWizard If they are plagiarised copies of other's content.. yes.
Should've been clearer the question wasn't a genuine one, my bad.

8:55 AM
@Tinkeringbell hah, well, so yeah should be deleted, but still, teaching the system (spam ram?) that this is spam is risky false positive. This might make it block legit questions in the future.

Meh.
I'll leave that for a mod more familiar with the inner workings of spam flags and spamram.
I can't find anything on MSE at a glance that confirms this.

9:13 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard Don't worry about that.

9:25 AM
@Sha with regards to your comment: meta.stackexchange.com/q/165241/369802 < They didn't think anything at all, just plagiarised some.

@Tinkeringbell I'm bit confused because my only comment there is this one:

@ShadowTheKidWizard meta.stackexchange.com/a/383580/369802 < Comment there ;)

oh you mean the NAA is copy and paste of something from that thread

Yeah. So it was also plagiarism, not just NAA :)

Yeah, figured it at some later point.
So spammers switched to new techniques? :(

9:33 AM
Not sure. This one hadn't spammed yet, and I've suspended them for the plagiarism for now. But it may be that yes, they have switched and more plagiarism shows up in the next few days... so keep an eye out for me? :)

@Tinkeringbell their name is the spam

Maybe, yeah. No links on the profile though...

@JNat backlog rebuild in progress! Cross network spammer for your gentle care. ;)

I'll destroy that one too.

@Tinkeringbell yup, don't see any risk in that. :)

@ShadowTheKidWizard using plagiarized posts to make accounts look legit is a pretty old trick. usually, but far from always, the plagiarized posts also have a spam link added to them.
but the fact that they'd spammed on SO made me check for plagiarism on the MSE post (which I pointed out in the comments), since I've seen this sort of thing before.
surprisingly, given that they went to the trouble of getting an old account and posting a plagiarized post first, the spam attempt was a complete disaster.

10:24 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard ehh.
I posted the answer and tbh I don't really care outside helping an obviously confused user

10:44 AM

@RyanM sure, when there's spam link there's no doubt.

11:32 AM
... using search to see if anyone mentioned the new Sonic game on chat... getting posts by a certain user instead.
Guess that means I have no other option then...
^ @SonictheAnonymousHedgehog is your new game good?

11:53 AM
@SPArcheon not by the user, for the user, but yeah this makes searching for actual messages about the game itself impossible.

@ShadowTheKidWizard cant you do an absolute search with a space in front of the name, that would in theory filter out all the @-mentions

@Luuklag chat search is the most primitive/basic thing that exists, I'm pretty sure it does not support even multi words search.
You can search for one word, and pray it was indexed.
No absolute search, no exact match, nada.

@ShadowTheKidWizard First off, plagiarism is defined as TP for feedback to SmokeDetector. Please see Feedback Guidance: Plagiarism.
In general, we would like to see feedback encompass the context which exists (anywhere) at the time the post is reported (with some updating of feedback as more context becomes available). It's understood that you may not know the context when first giving feedback, so it's reasonable to change feedback when more context is found/determined.
Refusing to consider the additional context when it's brought to your attention is, generally, counterproductive. If there is a time when you adamantly feel that the overall feedback should be different, then it would be helpful to bring the report to the attention of the MS admins. You can do this from the MS report page for that post by clicking on "Something not right?" on the post report page, entering a description of the issue, and clicking "report". Doing so does require an MS account.

@Makyen didn't know that, ok. But still, many times nobody saying it's plagiarism so I can't know.

@ShadowTheKidWizard Yes, unfortunately, we often have imperfect information. Fortunately, we often can get information from others who are also looking at a post. In general, when there's additional context uncovered, people will tend to share that information in chat, in a comment on MS, and/or use chat to create a comment on MS to retain that additional context for people looking at the report currently and in the future. It's not uncommon for people to change their feedback as more information is determined. Investigating a particular report is often something that benefits from multiple people taking different routes to try to find more information.

> 1. lots of posters may not be aware of what plagiarism is and the Stack Exchange policies around it.
I expect that a lot of plagiarism isn't intentional, people are just unaware that they need to mention when they copy stuff, and to give proper attribution.
Frankly, I expect SO members to have some awareness of copyright and licensing issues, since they're involved in software creation. OTOH, I guess new student programmers probably don't think much about that stuff.

Hello! How is it with everyone today? ^^ I hope no one is sick!

If you're asking everyone, of course someone is going to be sick. Not sure about percentages but I would guess at least 10 percent of the world population isn't healthy.

@Tinkeringbell interesting, 10% is also the rate of gay people. Might be a magic number. ;)
@WilliamMartens welcome to the Tavern! That's a nice first message. I'm fine, thanks. :D
Hope you enjoy Gödel,_Escher,_Bach! ;)

I was asking everyone yes :) And I do care about everyone :)
@ShadowTheKidWizard Thanks; It's a really insightful book; You read it as well? I got a bit surprised there !

@WilliamMartens hehe, I'm the local stalker. Hello! :P
And no, didn't read it. Yet?

7:23 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard Oh interesting either way! I highly recommend it :)

@WilliamMartens so, what brought you here? Is this the awesome waffle @M.A.R just made?

@ShadowTheKidWizard sorry ill have to ask - M.A.R ?
oh I just joined because I saw a question or a post about it ; can see if I can find it;
other than that it's just nice to join a chat and see what is being talked about :)

@WilliamMartens our local three kidneys guy, he's nice.

@ShadowTheKidWizard And.. I'll have to ask again who's that?

7:30 PM
Ohh thanks ; sorry that did clarify it!

@ShadowTheKidWizard Hey! That's like one of my favorite books...the part I've read at least ^^ lol
Got bogged down at some point and switched to a few lectures about it on YT, that made it easier...

@WilliamMartens Then you'd better get realistic expectations quick or see your hopes dashed all the time.

Watch out for the parrot, she gets cynical.

Oh uhm I am not sure how to respond, I guess I can put it this way?
**relatively speaking** ? 8)

On a world population of several billions.. still not going to work.
@Mithical realistic, not cynical. Important distinction because cynical means having lost touch with reality in the other direction ;)

7:42 PM
specifically which direction? :)

Too positive vs too negative, I guess. Or too naive vs too cynical, or... They're on opposite ends of a spectrum, at least.

so kind of a null ? Anyway; ill soon head home for the night - so wishing everyone(yes everyone!) a continuing pleasant day! (or night, depending on where you are) :)

Whatever, you're clearly not learning.
