@ShadowTheKidWizard so taken with a guinea pig?
> I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my owner go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will gnaw on you.

@Luuklag not sure what this was in reference to, do you remember? (or did I reply already?)

8:05 AM
@tripleee spam.
Flagged.
@JourneymanGeek hmm, see Peter comments, turns out the "question" is stolen from SO. chances that's a spam bot are quite high, so we better keep an eye in a week.
Keep in mind there is spam link in the profile.
(online casino, so one of the worst kinds of spammer.)
Damn!
This is bigger than I thought.
It's spam ring. @Journeyman
The one who answered the MSE off topic question? They're the same spammer.
Going to custom flag on SO.
Done.
Any SO mod here?
Rate my Android
Are they really thinking the broken heart looks like ass?! :P

8:24 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard Broken hearts feel like ass

@JourneymanGeek ohh. Smart!

@ShadowTheKidWizard unlike spamming on SE.

Wonder how many clicked the link...
I'm at work so can't. :(

lol
I didn't
I just flagged

Good self control! :D

8:31 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard @RyanM is pingable

8:42 AM
@tripleee thanks! Ryan, if you see this, just to let you know about my flag on SO. :)
The big issue is they answer each other, accept, gain rep, and might have more accounts involved.

returning spammer, same MO as earlier superuser.com/a/1750350

@ShadowTheKidWizard As far as I'm aware, a peach would be the internetionally accepted emoji ;)
Maybe they're expecting the rating to cause heartbreak.

@Tinkeringbell exactly! :D

@Martin most likely they can't Save or remove from Saves, but they can view existing Saves and search them. (Educated guess) — Shadow The Kid Wizard 1 min ago
Yes, that would be my guess too. Still, it would be nice to have some official confirmation.
If you prefer to discuss things related to this elsewhere, feel free to move the related messages into my room.
Although probably there isn't that much to discuss - but I did not want to make the comment thread longer by just saying that my guess is the same. (Which doesn't add any useful information.)

9:16 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard Yeah, something sketchy is happening there. Not entirely certain what, exactly...can look more tomorrow. No additional accounts are immediately obvious.

@Martin I vaguely remember saves is its own mechanism
you couldn't bookmark cause bookmarks were votes, but you might be able to save

Yes, I am actually just writing about it.
@gnat not the case, the Saves feature is it's own architecture separate from all of that (unlike Bookmarks which were technically just votes). If there's a bug in Roomba it's something else. — Felippe Rangel ♦ Oct 6 at 13:22

@RyanM thanks!

Until today, I thought that saves were votes - just as bookmarks. I only saw that comment today.

@Martin I think the Save action itself is still considered a vote, but there's much more happening behind the scenes after that, so it's not "just" vote.

9:30 AM
I'm tempted to test lol

@JourneymanGeek You mean linke suspending a volunteer and then trying what works and what doesn't?

@Martin from a certain point of view of 'volunteer'

@JourneymanGeek sock!

Oh, you have a sockpuppet account that you can use for that. (Is that what you mean by "volunteer"?)
What are the things to be tested?

@Martin suspend a sock, try to Save a post with the sock. Unsuspend the sock.

9:33 AM
Whether the suspended user can: 1. Add new save. 2. View the list of saves. 3. Search using "in:saves".

@Martin oh. Well, that would take longer time. ;)

Is there something else that should be tested? (If somebody indeed decides to try it.)

For some reason reminds me of Peter edits, with summary "While at it"... :D
Anyway no, can't think of more things related to this.

Well, the additional work is that the sock will need to have at least one save before getting suspended - so that the list and the search can be tested.
In any case, it's possible that we'll here from the devs concerning this - so maybe the test isn't really necessary.

@Martin this is meta tho
@Martin saves work fine while suspended

9:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Oh, so you already did the experiment? I suppose that you plan to post the results as an answer...?

@Martin might take long time until dev see/reply.
@JourneymanGeek O.o

@Martin done

If "works fine" means that everything I suggested in my feature request, I am not sure what to do with the tag.
On one hand - it is now no longer a feature request. (Since it works as expected.)
At the same time, if I remove the tag, it will make Tinkeringbell's answer (which explains what the suggested - and existing - feature is not a good idea) obsolete.

lol
You answer the question not the tags

@Martin nothing, this is perfect fit for .

9:47 AM
Still, the question was formulated as a feature request.
@ShadowTheKidWizard I see. That's a reasonable idea.

@Martin admittedly one that you couldn't tell without being suspended

@JourneymanGeek Drat. Seems the penalty box has some leaks.

@Tinkeringbell uh oh
Put your finger!

9:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek When you wrote in your answer "they're not 'votes' as the old favourites were" - you're linking to the user. I guess you maybe wanted to link to the relevant comment there?

@Martin yes I did

Well, guess I can start a counter feature request
I honestly don't think suspended users deserve to have the Save privilege.

@Martin I have a secondary account that... gets supended a lot for science :D

And I am grateful that somebody was willing to go through the effort of testing this on a sockpuppet. (I would even consider rewarding such an answer with a bounty - but it feels a bit weird for several reasons. For example, I don't think a few reputation points are really a reward for somebody who already is at 100k+.)

@Martin I believe "OOH! IT GOES SQUISH WHEN I POKE IT" is reward enough

9:52 AM
I am fine with that - if somebody posts a feature request to change this behavior. (I did my best to include in this post my view point why I consider this behavior useful.
To some extent, it is natural that suspended users can still do some things.

and yeah at 100k+ rep and a diamond, I really have no idea why I'd need a bounty

Suspended users are still able to use the search function, see the list they have available in their account - such as questions, answers, bounties, saves. Depending or parent user (or chatserver) they might still be able to chat.

@ShadowTheKidWizard I'd argue that even in suspension - they still have a right to look up things, just not post
and from that point of view, no one really benefits from naughty bonking them from saving things

@ShadowTheKidWizard not just 2 people, it has to be brothers specifically. Many other combinations have been attempted, but none have succeeded. — James T 3 mins ago
lol @SPA what you think? That's true? ^
:D
@JourneymanGeek good feeling? ;)

@tripleee some smokey post, probably archived by now, why it didn't get autoflagged, it had some pretty strong reasons. Buy I looked and the weight was <200. So thats why, but I thought there was something there to add to the list or revisit weights on or smth.

9:56 AM
And having more than Shog is a noble goal. :P

@ShadowTheKidWizard bounties on MSE are mostly pointless :D

@JourneymanGeek points! No point-less.

also, I really feel kinda wierd when I overtake some famous oldtimer
@ShadowTheKidWizard pointless points

Soapless soap

Literally my main goal is to work out how it works and document it

9:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek the famous oldtimer can come back and gain more points. :D

that said, the next person up is balpha :D

@JourneymanGeek look up things, yes. Make things themselves, no. They should be able to do only what anonymous visitors can do.

@JourneymanGeek Personally, I see them as an allowed way to bump an old post to the frontpage.

@Martin I guesssss
but then what?

Well, bumping (and a bounty) adds a bit more attention the the question. If the question is about an issue I care about, even a slightly chance that somebody will add a new feedback (or a few more votes) is worth sacrificing some reputation.

10:01 AM
@Martin +1

@Martin well - i guess its more attention but on meta a lot of the time, its not something that'll get an answer or action on it

After all, all that I'm giving up are some imaginary internet points. (Potentially some user privileges. But that is the thing I have to consider - if I am in the zone where I could loose some privilege.)

Another silent design change:

but also the impact

10:02 AM
Pretty sure it wasn't always bright red.
At least it's not blinking.

@JourneymanGeek I understand that. But to some limited extent I'd guess that SE takes into consideration how people responded to some feature request when considering whether or not it could be actually useful. So both "many people have upvoted this" and "some people cared about this enough to offer a bounty" sends some kind of signal.

@Martin loosening a privilege is cause for distress.

@Martin as an avid meta user, someone with some degree of influence and so on....
I literally to this day have no idea how SE picks what they work on ;D

Ok, it seems we digressed on a tangent.

So I'm not sure popular support matters directly
and I have a few things in my wishlist that are "we REALLY want to do it, but we can't cause its not on the roadmap"

10:06 AM
Still, even if we bounty sometimes added because some answer was nice/useful and you want to reward that answer (and at the same time, show it to more user) - I'd consider that a legitimate use of a bounty.

Legitmate, usually
and that's the one sensible reason to bounty on meta

Yes, I have some feature request that I could describe as "on my wishlist". That is another advantage to offering the bounty - in this way, I can quickly find the in my bounties tab.

similarly for the English post above

I'll have to leave soon - some different place to be and stuff to do IRL. But thanks once again to everybody that responded!

@Martin Saves seems good for this :D
I need to organise it tho

10:11 AM
@SmokeDetector still up serverfault.com/a/1114437

@Martin cheers! Drive safely to the difference place. ;)
@tripleee not anymore

brilliant

10:33 AM
Peter isn't giving up trying to poke lost souls.

Well, that's one way to let a lost soul know where they need to go

@JourneymanGeek pity they never, ever, reply. ;)

We don't need them to reply, we need them to understand

hmm wait
@Tink was talking earlier here about leaking. And we got plumbing question on MSE talking about leaking too!!!
They monitor this chat!
:D

10:40 AM
Okay. What shall we talk about next then... Something more inappropriate? :P

It's like the numerous stories of people who say they talked with a friend over the phone (voice call, not email, not WhasApp, not Facebook) and minutes later they're getting spam based on what they were talking with the friend. ;)

Oh, but they all have Facebook app installed on their phone.
Facebook local manager in Israel was asked about it directly and seriously during interview, and of course denied everything. lol

of course

@Tinkeringbell hand cream, perhaps.

10:45 AM
Hmm. Or peaches!
Peach hand cream?

Broken hearts?

Well mine broke a little this weekend. The heat pump suddenly started giving an error and telling me to call a (expensive) mechanic. Luckily, turning it off and on again helped but I do hope it won't happen again soon!

I read that as heart pump and was confused

@Tinkeringbell oh my. That's nasty.
:D

@JourneymanGeek Heh, no... not that broken :P

10:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek she's still not 80 y/o!

Just a mini-heart attack of the 'crap, unexpected potentially expensive stuff to repair is broken' kind ;)

My grandfather got heart pump for his 83th birthday.

@ShadowTheKidWizard So? There's no age limit on those things XD

Served him well for 16 years. :)
@Tinkeringbell sadly

@ShadowTheKidWizard I can test on the app but the batteries on the small phone's flat and I need to top it off.

10:51 AM
But average is likely around 80. :D
@JourneymanGeek well @Glorfindel can also test it, if having few minutes to spare. (Just try to bookmark via the app, see if it's still working. :))

I was gonna uninstall it :D

@Tinkeringbell what heat pump, though? You have central heat pump in the house?
@JourneymanGeek no! You can't! That would be... umm... you just can't. :D

Same happened with my dishwasher a while ago, it stopped mid-wash with some nasty error, but after shutting it down and trying again, everything was working fine.

@ShadowTheKidWizard it still works
or it says it works

10:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek ha! Told ya. ;)
@JourneymanGeek can't you see the list of your bookmarks in the app?

@ShadowTheKidWizard no

Wrong reply?

maybe right reply :D
@ShadowTheKidWizard also, except for very basic things, that phone is waaaaaay too small
@Mithical meta.stackexchange.com/questions/383291/… looks like its fixed

11:12 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard I've got an air-water heat pump for heating and hot water, yep :)
It's not 'central' though :P It's not in the middle of the apartment, nor is it shared with other apartments (it's my own private thing) :P

@Tinkeringbell I was actually looking at that as an option for the new place but they're big and insanely pricy for a little 2 room
@Tinkeringbell central as opposed to split when it comes to air
I think?

@JourneymanGeek Yep. It has its own closet and the outside unit needs space too. Definitely big.
Then again it could be a bit smaller if you only use it for heating and not hot tap water, as you don't need the very big (and bigger because insulation) hot tap water storage :)
If you want to be able to also use it to cool though, you get an even bigger thing, as far as I understood.

@Tinkeringbell oh, for shower?

ah, what I was looking at was hot tap water only
and for soooome reason there's no hot water hookup in the kitchen by default

@JourneymanGeek that's odd

11:17 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard All hot water. Also baths, dishes, cleaning etc. :P
@JourneymanGeek Are they assuming you get a dishwasher that heats its own water and otherwise never need to clean anything? :P

@Tinkeringbell well here we have it on the roof.

Like a sun boiler?

@Tinkeringbell yup exactly that
All the boilers are on the roof.

Nice :) I have an apartment so I don't have 'roof' :P
Though I wouldn't mind a sun boiler, I think it can still be pretty expensive and with the climate here, not all that useful ;)

yeah, here it's 95% sunny days so totally useful. :D

11:19 AM
@Tinkeringbell People don't generally use dishwashers here

@Tinkeringbell poof roof? :/

tbh it wouldn't be too bad if I was doing full renovations
I'll need to see when I actually get my apartments and/or my neighbours do :D

I'm looking up some numbers now and it *might* actually still save some money... average cost of a sun boiler for 2 is 2500 euros, you can get a government subsidy of 850. That leaves 1650 euros as the initial investment... Estimating the average kWh usage of my heat pump to be 1.5kWh a day for hot water now, and a kWh costing 50 cents.... Say hot water costs me around 275 euros a year *now*, and the sun boiler saving about 50 percent of that... it would take 12 years for it to earn itself back.

but with energy prices rising, it could be much more
and good for the environment

Oh, and you should substract about 200 euros for maintenance from that 1100 too.

11:28 AM
@Tinkeringbell yeah, not worth the hassle. ;)
@tripleee they will get lower again when things settle down.

@tripleee I'm kinda hoping electricity prices here will be decoupled from the gas ones, that would bring the price back down a lot already.
Also, add some solar panels into the mix, and I'm looking into wind as well.

Sand battery?

but the general trend is for energy to become increasingly problematic; my bets would be on rising prices in the longer term, too

Eh, a battery might be nice as well. Thing is, those solar panels aren't on 'my roof' either, but they belong to an energy coöperation.

@Tinkeringbell sure, it's all about money after all.

11:31 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard Ooh, this is a long and complicated story.
But basically, the entire neighborhood was built simultaneously with a solar park, that is supposed to make enough energy for everyone living here.
Of course, in summer those produce way too much and in winter way too little, but there's some legal structure that means the coöperation sells the excess to a distributor in summer, and then that money is used to buy the electricity back in the winter.
It's a bit more complicated in reality, but that is the idea.
@tripleee I hope not, but if it does... I'll find a way. Maybe get rid of the vacuum and go back to using a broom and dustpan, get rid of the dishwasher and do the dishes by hand. Shower with clothes on so they don't need the laundry machine :P
Work from the office again... bleeeeegh that's going to be very last resort though.
And look what you've done... you've made me miss lunchtime :(

11:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek yep, the old functionality has been restored

12:05 PM
lingering spam from August math.stackexchange.com/a/4517334

@tripleee custom flagging seems like the right thing to do here
will more details
presuming a mod had seen it before

12:32 PM
@Tinkeringbell heh, sounds good, but also kind of the things that are "looking good on the papers while planning them, and less-so-good when it comes to actual implementation".

@ShadowTheKidWizard It's exactly that ;)

But what it means for you? Cheaper bills?
@Tinkeringbell you know you can actually wash clothes in the sink, without machine. :D

Pretty much, yeah. An energy bill here is mostly comprised of several things: Your actual energy usage, but also e.g. a fee to a grid operator, for using the powerlines (they use that to maintain those power lines), and some taxes. In my case, I usually should end up getting most of the taxes back, and pay less for the energy usage and grid operation costs.

@Tinkeringbell but that won't save energy, just revert it from your home to the office. ;)

@ShadowTheKidWizard I don't think of it in terms of saving energy, but in terms of not paying more for less ;)

12:35 PM
@Tinkeringbell lol this happens to me often while here and busy with replies. :D

@ShadowTheKidWizard That too. Or I might get one of those really old fashioned hand cranked things.

@Mithical with the copy&paste answer, yeah.
How many so far? Think that at least 5.

@ShadowTheKidWizard but it was literally the same root cause

@tripleee can't see any spam there.
@JourneymanGeek well, sure. Still, identical answers feels wrong.
@Tinkeringbell oh, lol. So yeah, that would reduce costs. ;)

@ShadowTheKidWizard the same domain was spammed twice earlier today

12:39 PM
@Tinkeringbell wash in a river? :D

@ShadowTheKidWizard Rivers here are all 'downstream' from other countries... and as such, rather dirty.

@tripleee so better do what @Journeyman said, custom flag and link to those other spam posts so the mod will be convinced.

Besides that, there isn't really one that close to home that it would be practical for the laundry :P

it was custom flagged by cigien an hour ago, I don't suppose additional flags will help?

@Tinkeringbell so dig a canal! Surely @rene can come and help with this as well. :D
@tripleee yeah, one or two should be enough, better not flood the mods.
@Tink see how happy they are ^
:P

12:43 PM
The water there looks slightly cleaner than over here still though :P

@SmokeDetector k
@Tinkeringbell well, running water should be clean enough for laundry, also using soap. No?

@ShadowTheKidWizard I would not wash my laundry in a running river here. Maybe if it was a fresh mountain stream, but any rivers here have been through half of Europe already, and contain enough pollution to stink :P

@Tinkeringbell pity
Here you can get cancer from the river's water, no big deal. :D

Heh.
Well you've got to die of something. Though I can imagine more pleasant things ;)

@Tinkeringbell yeah death from pollution in water is nasty. :/

12:54 PM
Technically if the water was the right sort of polluted you wouldn't even need soap

Sure, if it's acidic enough you just throw in clothes and they disappear along with the stains.

nos.nl/artikel/… < Recent news article, about water pollution here. It ends up here, but the pollution comes from Belgium

@Tinkeringbell yeah blame Belgium ;)

Just did!

1:06 PM
Here we also blame others, authorities say pollution come from untreated sewers in the Palestinian Authority.
Maybe true, maybe not, but it's the easiest way to not fix something. :D
Like my kids, when they have to organize their games/stuff they yell "But he/she did it!!!!1" pointing on random sibling, and not doing anything.
Meanwhile in England...
Using candles instead of electricity ^

I mean, I do that too at home :P
Little use for lights when the TV is on :P

@Tinkeringbell hehe, yeah, but candles aren't really good for environment, risk of place getting on fire, and most likely isn't even that cheap. lol
So it's more a gimmick than something real, in case of pubs.
Used candles? ^

@ShadowTheKidWizard melting stubs into new ones? :D

1:22 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard Yeah, I am very careful with the candles. Never let them burn unsupervised, they're always in glass jars with lids (so even if e.g. the wax ignites, you can put on the lid and starve it of oxygen)... I'm not doing the crazy stuff like shoving many candles under a terracotta pot for 'heating' XD
As for 'cheap'... a big bag (100 pcs) of tea lights that will usually burn for 4 hours is only like 3-4 euros, depending on where you get them. That's 3-4 cents a candle ;)

@Tinkeringbell yeah, but for big place like a pub, they must use big candles, and a lot.
@Tinkeringbell good!

@ShadowTheKidWizard Sure, you can see 2-3 candles at a single table. But they all seem to be tea lights to me as well :)
I don't know. It may not be all that much cheaper but maybe some of it is also symbolic ;)
I know bakery shops over here had a 'candle light protest' a while back, not turning on lights but only using candles to ask attention for how many can't pay the gas/electricity bills for baking bread anymore.

I think its also the athmosphere
candles are kinda nice and moody

Found the candle!

@JourneymanGeek Moody?

1:30 PM
uh

I like watching any kind of flames, so I can understand 'nice' but it's not really a mood..

candle lit dinners and so on
there's no reason a modern civilisation NEEDS candles
unless something went wrong with the power

@JourneymanGeek well, something did go wrong, the price. ;)

lol
@ShadowTheKidWizard I can probably go 5 or 12 low voltage lighting if power went that bad :D

@JourneymanGeek or just use the phone for light :)

1:35 PM
uhm
I guessssss

@JourneymanGeek Or they suddenly stop producing light bulbs :P
@ShadowTheKidWizard I do this sometimes... Also because it's less light if I have to go e.g. to the toilet at night, so it won't wake me up as bad.

Building traditional native apps often requires maintaining two or more codebases. Let’s look at two frameworks that let you keep your code unified.

@Tinkeringbell actually for me at least, the phone light is stronger than most lights at house. lol
But yeah, leaving one light on all night so we can go safely to toilets. :D

2:27 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard There are these really neat lights that light up the floor when you get out of bed. Stuff that has a sensor to know when to turn on. I've considered maybe putting one or two of those in strategic places... Not sure how much light that will give though.
I think the phone is enough ;)

@Tinkeringbell yeah we have something for the kids, it's just a gimmick i.e. not enough light to actually see anything. :D

2:46 PM
These should be bright enough to help e.g. elderly people from falling over and breaking hips, so... they're not just a gimmick. I'm more afraid they'll be too bright XD

2:59 PM
@Tinkeringbell yeah probably we have something cheap, it was part of major house renovation.

@Spevacus a story about very rare day when Kevin did a Like to Stack Overflow blog post.
