Hi guys
Um the link title is broken again for SO ... stackoverflow.blog/2022/10/18/…
Do I report?

1 hour later…
06:29
@DialFrost Yes, tag it
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog @DialFrost I'm tempted to write a general request for proofreading of the blog :D
@RyanM Can't help but laugh at the comment you left on that spam post
:D glad someone saw it
@RyanM is it a bad thing I knew what the link was before I clicked on it? :D
Those were all different links! Albeit to similar content.
06:36
were they all Rick Astley?
Yes.
nice one
the comment was:
> Hi, I'm afraid you're on the wrong site for this spam. This is Meta Stack Exchange, a site for spam about the Stack Exchange network and the software that powers it. If you were looking for a specific Stack Exchange site to post your spam, you can have a look through the sites in the network—but make sure to check the site's help center and tour before posting.
@RyanM they were all Rickrolls no?
@JourneymanGeek Indeed. Original, off-key, and re-recorded for an insurance ad, respectively.
06:41
ah
I didn't actually have the sound up :D
@JourneymanGeek That's what Joachim also suggested
That could be a new question ngl
But I'm very unsure how it will be received if posted :3
But it sounds nice!
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog There's already 5 tags :(
@DialFrost Tag wiki for says it's about question titles
ah whoops
Switch complete
@DialFrost needs a fair bit of tact tbh
I'm actually unsure how best to handle it, else I might have already ;)
@DialFrost you'd have my upvote
06:52
@Luuklag Thx but I'm not sure if I should post it
I mean it is @JourneymanGeek's idea
hmm
@DialFrost - I'm cool with folks doing it
and asking for input
so u think it should have an RQ
?
I think the tricky part here is that the blog is essentially divorced from Q&A and you're critiquing the care people put into their work
2
hmm true true
Unless I put in the question the adv/disadv of having it? maybe?
and ask for input of what the community thinks
and this wouldn't be a full blown critique aka meta.stackexchange.com/questions/303019/…
naw
this isn't a matter 'for the community'
06:55
You could also do something like: What causes all these posts to have these [obj] things, and what can be done to prevent them, tag as support
@Luuklag those are not the only mistakes tho
the real 'core' issue is proofreading posts after publication
@JourneymanGeek yup
(pardon any typos, I'm typing on my tabletty thing and the keyboard is a bit bad)
"tabletty thing"??? lmao
@DialFrost I run a MS surface pro 7 as a portable system
I love it to bits but the keyboard leaves much to be desired if you're used to a proper keyboard
06:58
So to conclude: we want the possibility of an RQ for blog. However the disadv is that blog isnt really part of Q&A?
@DialFrost oh the approach wouldn't be as a discussion
the trick to good meta Q&A to me is writing for the audience
and you're writing for a CM or dev to pass it on to marketing
and you also have to have marketing 'understand' why its an issue
That sounds like a post you should write :P
I have no experience in making good posts unfortunately
All I do is post bugs :3
@JourneymanGeek I understand but er I don't really understand how to craft that
@DialFrost Basically, you'd probably want to take an approach like "Issues like this undermine the work that the marketing team puts into preparing these posts. Having a checklist that includes items like spot-checking that the post is rendered correctly, as well as addressing the causes of past bugs to prevent them from recurring, as was done for the HTML entities issue (find that post and link to it), would ensure that their work is displayed in the best possible light."
That way you're not insulting anyone's work - you're telling them that this issue is affecting the perception of their work.
You're recognizing that they are putting work into this content, and so issues like this should matter to them, since of course you know they care about their work.
(also, by "the HTML entities issue", I mean the one that affected the blog, not the half-dozen ones on the Q&A platform)
07:10
ye
(also I'm like ...95% sure it was HTML entities. May have been some other encoding issue.)
(also it might've been posted on Meta Stack Overflow, FYI)
@RyanM yup
And that the blog is the public face of the company
But what do we really want to ensure the issues don't recur, RQ's?
Proofreading would be a fair ask I think
"RQ's"?
07:13
Requests?
@JourneymanGeek even just spot-checking the final post rendering would catch a lot of these issues. One would hope general proofreading is done before hitting publish.
Nono review queue
But idk
@DialFrost oh, definitely not review queues. That's way overkill and also just generally not something that needs to or should involve the community.
07:31
Mkay
Then proofreading it is?
So we wanna have proofreading b4 it's published?
And how is that gna work :P
08:09
@DialFrost No, I think the issue is spot-checking it after. Presumably it didn't have weird OBJ characters visible when they wrote it.
09:07
mkay
@RyanM Mind me copying majority of the text?
09:25
@DialFrost go for it
He already went :P
posted 2 minutes ago XD
Ah. Plagiarism!
3
(I kid.)
But I now have proof, so I will take action :P
Surely, having everything documented neatly like this... it's a rare occurence when modding plagiarism :D
@DialFrost it's worth noting that chat content is also CC BY-SA licensed, so quoting me without my prior consent would be allowed, assuming you attribute it and link back to where I posted it.
Hmm gimme a sec lemme try to link the transcript
Took someone 15seconds to downvote :P, I'm assuming this is gonna be a 50 50 post (maybe?)
@RyanM for the "html issue" do you mean my recent question earlier?
Or something else
09:45
How do I respond to this? ""... we should include ..." - who is this "we"? The community? The community does not have any influence on the blog posts. "
@DialFrost How about something something like "Someone in SE should be tasked to proofread blogs posts before they are published".
@DavidPostill I think the issue is that someone in SE should be checking them after they're published
2 hours ago, by Ryan M
@DialFrost No, I think the issue is spot-checking it after. Presumably it didn't have weird OBJ characters visible when they wrote it.
@RyanM OK. "before and after"
Well...I would hope they're already proofreading before publishing.
But yes, they should of course continue doing that.
thx for the link and help @RyanM :3
10:01
@DialFrost No problem. I made a couple edits, hopefully they're in line with your intent.
yup tysm
"After discussing the idea with @Journeyman_Geek and @Joachim" whoops forgot your name
Edited to include that I didn't actually discuss with @Joachim and they only mentioned in a comment to my other qns
@DialFrost it might seem a bit unfair but...
mind leaving the issue to me? >_>
Dark mode sneak peak on Sound Design? :D
That is a sexy webpage design
10:22
@JourneymanGeek eh?
@DialFrost I'll post a question?
Its a delicate issue and uh, that question needs a ton of work
You can edit it XD
It'd be a complete rewrite
@JourneymanGeek mkay I delete mine? :(
If you're fine with it
10:24
@JourneymanGeek If I'm not? :P I'd prefer it be closed as a dupe
Works for me
go ahead :3
@JourneymanGeek should have told me earlier heh :3
I was busy tbh
I'm in the middle of reservist
@JourneymanGeek wait what lmao
My unit's stay out but it takes me between 40 min to an hour and half to get home
10:30
in the middle of reservist and typing in chat :3
Oh I was doing that when I was discussing how I'd approach it
@DavidPostill that won't help, most bugs are things that happen only after publishing, and not seen in preview.
Their content platform (no idea which, stopped following after they switched for the 1000th time) is terribly bugged, so it's not their direct fault, but still.
So must have SE staff review blog posts after they are published.
@JourneymanGeek which season? (assuming it's some TV show?)
oh wait it's a movie.
So you watched this on the way home, nice way to pass the time. :P
10:48
@ShadowTheKidWizard amusingly enough, I was catching up on the Rookie:Feds
@ShadowTheKidWizard at reservist
I'm not going to dupe hammer since its a conflict of interest
11:02
@JourneymanGeek :D
@JourneymanGeek I did it.
@JourneymanGeek still doesn't make much sense (or any at all actually lol), you mean you're in reserve army service?
@ShadowTheKidWizard yes
A military reserve force is a military organization whose members simultaneously hold military and civilian occupations. These members are not normally kept under arms and their main role is to be available to fight when their military requires additional manpower. Reserve forces are generally considered part of a permanent standing body of armed forces. The existence of reserve forces allows a nation to reduce its peacetime military expenditures while maintaining a force prepared for war. In countries with recruitment systems based on the selection of volunteers, such as Canada, Spain, the United...
@JourneymanGeek so you are a reservist, you're not "in middle" of it. </English-101>
:D
@ShadowTheKidWizard in the middle of my reservist service :D
11:10
Anyway, stay safe!
@ShadowTheKidWizard unless someone invades in the next week, I should be fine :D
@JourneymanGeek you have your boots?
May 21, 2017 at 8:11, by Journeyman Geek
I actually rather like my army boots
@ShadowTheKidWizard yup
I had to replace boots twice during my 20 years of reserve service. :/
@JourneymanGeek @bad_coder got confused lmao
11:33
I am aware
@ShadowTheKidWizard if its 2017, it was probably the 'good' gortexes
the replacements were crap, they would randomly shed their soles, and the current ones are peruvians and are a little too narrow for size 12s
@JourneymanGeek I have no idea what yall are talking about but mkay :3
@DialFrost boots
@DialFrost bad_coder attempted to do a dupe reopening without understanding the full context :D
@JourneymanGeek heh
@DialFrost army shoes, which are actually boots.
@ShadowTheKidWizard they are very much boots
11:44
@JourneymanGeek well, boots are kind of shoes. :P
Didn't wear boots of any kind for about 5 years, and not missing it. :D
@ShadowTheKidWizard a ship is kind of a boat and call one that in the navy and they will bring back keelhauling
heh turns out the official term is "combat boots".
Combat boots are military boots designed to be worn by soldiers during combat or combat training, as opposed to during parades and other ceremonial duties. Modern combat boots are designed to provide a combination of grip, ankle stability, and foot protection suitable for a rugged environment. They are traditionally made of hardened and sometimes waterproofed leather. Today, many combat boots incorporate technologies originating in civilian hiking boots, such as Gore-Tex nylon side panels, which improve ventilation and comfort. They are also often specialized for certain climates and conditions...
@JourneymanGeek tru dat!
did they fix the blog already?
Nope.
@ShadowTheKidWizard 6-8, 6-8
@JourneymanGeek ?
I'm 1 rep away from 2k ru kidding XD
brb serial downvoting
11:51
@JourneymanGeek hehe also they feature a closed question, wonder if we should "report" it as well?

Q: What is the origin of "6 to 8 weeks" and is it really the Crazy Frog?

Shadow The Kid WizardLast week I was watching a TV show. During a dialog, one character asked the other something like "So how long will it take you to do it" and the answer was simply "6 to 8 weeks". This led me to believe Jeff was just using a known meme and just applying it here, over five years ago, but all my se...

:P
Originally "weeks" was used, but these days after seeing too many bugs still open for more than 6-8 years, people just don't use time unit anymore.
It also could be faster :D
12:07
@JourneymanGeek than 6 seconds?!
6-8ms!
Bugfixes at the speed of latency!
Is it just me or does the new canned comments here meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/420897/… seem too similar
E.g. look at my answer, I couldn't see much of a major diff btw the 2 close reasons
12:28
@DialFrost no major, but there is difference, it's clear enough in the description already, I can't explain it better.
@ShadowTheKidWizard really? huh okey
@DialFrost yeah. In a nutshell, "need debug details" is indeed part of "need more details", but common enough in Stack Overflow to justify own category.
"I have no idea what your problem is" vs "I need to see more of your code to help you fix your problem"
also...the whole minimal verifiable code example requirement on SO
mkay thx guys
12:49
He's here!
!!/coffee g3r
@ShadowTheKidWizard brews a cup of jQuery for @g3r
@ShadowTheKidWizard who?
@DialFrost the one who just got coffee
o/
@g3rv4 ah hi!

(had to put a hat on, summer is coming)
4
@g3rv4 (all year long summer for me :3)
@DialFrost some years ago I wouldn't have envied that... but now I really do
13:05
@g3rv4 ?why it's so hot :(
I'm enving snow and skiing :(
@DialFrost nah, have a kid and winter has been... let's say "unpleasant"
@g3rv4 isn't winter fun? (let's say I just only see snow less than once a year; sometimes none)
@g3rv4 oh dear :(
@DialFrost we don't get snow at all... but winter on the first year of kinder came with lots of sickness, not only for her but for all the family. We've also consistently slept as crap
@g3rv4 ouchey (slept as crap - due to the cold?)
Here winter is just starting, and kids are sick in all seasons so doesn't really matter. :D
13:11
@ShadowTheKidWizard :( I want winter...
@g3rv4 it does rain lots sometimes
@g3rv4 well, hope it gets better during summer and you'll get your well deserved sleep. :)
Personally, I'm not sure bout the rest of you, but I'm pretty much immune to cold :D
@ShadowTheKidWizard comfy and warm ;)
@JourneymanGeek really? Strange
@DialFrost hehe should have said "winter", it's not a real winter. Minimum temp is like 20 degrees (celcius), maybe up to 10 days with actual rain. Snow is just a myth.
:D
@DialFrost I've lived here nearly 40 years
trust me, it pours some years
and its gotten cold here
13:13
@JourneymanGeek I luv cold :3
@JourneymanGeek weird, @DialFrost's profile shows you two are from the same place...
@ShadowTheKidWizard yes
@ShadowTheKidWizard ?
@DialFrost Singapore
@ShadowTheKidWizard I did not see that coming
@JourneymanGeek "COLD", ru outta ur mind
13:15
under 20 degrees
and weeeeet
> Winter 2022 in Northern Hemisphere will begin on

@JourneymanGeek yes it pours every year in singapore :3
@JourneymanGeek it does?
@DialFrost so you're not from Singapore?
very rarely
@ShadowTheKidWizard I'm from america but I moved to singapore 7+ years ago
still here... :/
13:16
@DialFrost so why you say no winter?
no "winter"
I vaguely remember late 90s
singapore is all summer sorta
gets hella boring
@JourneymanGeek hehe, yeah, even here in Israel we had some tough winters back then.
13:17
We literally exist cause the weather is boring
tropics + sitting in a giant bowl
@JourneymanGeek I ain't there back then :3
@JourneymanGeek yessir!
The bus to school became a boat, think around 1995 or 1996
While in army, got stuck with the mobile gun several times due to floods or just mud.
@JourneymanGeek I'm assuming you know programming?
You assume wrong
But... if you luv hardware, I'd assume you know some software stuf XD
@JourneymanGeek aww k then never mind
Oh well I gtg sleep
