@forestdistrustsStackExchange Not too surprised
@JourneymanGeek Are there any other efficient filesystems that use tail packing?
@forestdistrustsStackExchange IIRC same way a normal edit was made?
@forestdistrustsStackExchange the lead dev's in prison for murdering his wife....
That tends to be unfortunate for any project
That only put a stop to Reiser4. ReiserFS wasn't killed by that event.
Well, now it is? And I think its also the lack of development/maintainance
Probably. I suppose tail packing is a feature for a fairly niche requirement anyway.
Especially since we nowadays usually put many small data streams in databases rather than in individual files on the filesystem.
00:10
there you go
Oh well
I prefer ext4 anyway, at least for my own system.
Come to think of it, although ext4 doesn't have tail packing, it can squeeze small files into inode blocks...
So the deprecation won't hurt as much for some as it could.

@JNat I'm taking my system in for servicing and am using it sparingly until it's repaired. If someone else would be so kind, much appreciated; otherwise 6-8 days. 😀

1 hour later…
01:24
@forestdistrustsStackExchange You can't. Also mobile view is gone
@JourneymanGeek What is mobile view?
@forestdistrustsStackExchange the old 'simple' view for phones
If you're asking, you're either not going to miss it, or its gonna be a terrible shock
Oh. I don't use mobile phones. I use a desktop.
But the small window size causes the text to appear all squished in responsive mode.
ah, uh
there's been some changes since then
Before you rant
We know. We have lots of complaints too :D
I actually haven't noticed anything tremendously different. The only thing that's really bothering me is the lack of a non-responsive mode.
I did notice the different UI for the question list, but I actually don't mind that change.
At least, not based on what I've seen so far.

2 hours later…
03:08
It's marked as , but the bug just happened to me...
Should I report on MSE, or something else?
New MSE post, reference the old report saying its completed
Someone will SR it if we can replicate the issue
03:35
What?!
I just received the notifications... one hour after I received the upvotes!
I was a minute away from posting a report. Is this still report-worthy?
03:49
lol
maybe wait?

5 hours later…
08:41
@Mithical Wondering if this report is on your list of bug reports regarding keyboard-only users to check.

5 hours later…
13:46
maintenance mode?
Why is SE down?
anyone knows?
no one knows currently, but we may blame the DDOSer for now...
i guess
its online now
looks like it
14:45
It is down again now
Its online again

4 hours later…
18:42
@SonictheSaveUkraine-hog I don't actually have a list aside from what I've posted, but it's not something I was aware of beforehand, no

1 hour later…
19:49
Where does one go these days for status updates? Stackstatus says nothing, Nick Craver is no longer the go to ... XD
@Bart Sadly, I think nowhere at the moment.
This room might be your best bet XD
Ugh, and that on the one night I decide to overhaul a Python backend when I'm really not a Python developer ... I need all the help I can get :D
20:08
Try a foreign language SO?
20:59
@Bart There's the SO Python chat: chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/6/python Admittedly, it's not very busy on the weekend. Several of the regulars do backend stuff, including at least one RO (not me).
21:48
Is SE down for maintenance everywhere?
Or is this a DDoS attack? @JourneymanGeek told me that someone was attacking the site through Tor a month ago which caused SE to block Tor for a time. I hope it's not happening again.
@forestdistrustsStackExchange most rumors seem to lean towards DDos again yeah. But no one knows for sure
@forestdistrustsStackExchange no official updates but... looks like someone's attacking again
:/
Are they use Tor IPs again?
And is there any information on who is doing it, why, or where they may be contacted?
@forestdistrustsStackExchange I know exactly as much as you do
which is nothing
hm
Well on the off-chance that the attacker is in here or sees this: send me an email. We'll talk.
21:54
@forestdistrustsStackExchange It is suspicious that the site is under attack the minute you show up again though :P
lol
I wouldn't attack a site I find as valuable as SE. :P
Or Bart...
And I certainly wouldn't use Tor to attack.
Hahaha just kidding, just kidding... We don't even know for sure it is another attack, just that it seems that way
I mentioned this to Journey but I might as well repeat it here. An easy solution to attacking IPs coming from Tor is to set up an onion service for SE and then blacklist Tor IPs on the clearnet site during times of attack. That way, the most a Tor-based attacker could do is hurt the onion site. And setting up an onion service is easy.
It's interesting that the chat infrastructure isn't down. Is it on a different network?
Usually when there's maintenance of the whole site, the chat also goes unresponsive.
21:58
Does it? I seem to remember chat working during maintenance/outages before
My memory may be faulty then. It happens from time to time. I need an ECC brain.
I'd hazard a guess and say it's an attack (or some major fault) since you as a CM don't know what's happening. I take it that CMs usually get told when legit maintenance is planned?
Since when am I a CM? How many paychecks did I miss out on?
I thought you were.
You're a mod then?
Nope. Yep
And I probably won't ever end up working for a company like SE, unless I totally lose my mind.
@forestdistrustsStackExchange none of the MSE mods except me are nutty enough to even consider CMing :D
Well at the moment, I think one of the other mods applied once
@forestdistrustsStackExchange chat's on different servers/domains, so would be unaffected
During the last attack a month ago, were any of the IPs of the attacker published?
Nope
I'd link you what I've got but... its all on meta
heh
If anyone has the IPs give them to me and I can try to botkill them. Might work.
Generally the pattern is this happens over a few hours, SE mitigates it, they try something new
22:06
Try something new in what sense? A new round of fresh IPs?
new approach
That can mean a lot of things.
@forestdistrustsStackExchange finding new ways to cause server load
Is it all application-layer attacks then and not just raw downlink saturation?
22:08
I think I saw a post on meta indicating that a certain list page was changed to disallow showing pages .>1000 due to attacks
which is why I assume they are doing layer 7 attacks
Oh. That would explain why they get away with using Tor then.
I guess SE needs to improve the efficiency of their backend code.
@forestdistrustsStackExchange If I recall - they're generally running at very low loads
It's the worst-case pathological inputs which need to be made more efficient.
Not the average-case ones.
22:28
Looks like the site is back. Mostly at least. Some Tor nodes aren't working.
22:46
Aaaand back in "maintenance" mode.
Tried 15 exits. Most said offline for maintenance. One said too many requests. Oh well.
Back up now.
lol nvm. Yeah must be DDoS.
23:11
Huh, first time I got a message saying "The service is unavailable." as plain text.
23:59
Is the site still down for you guys or is it just Tor that's blocked? I'm seeing in chat HNQ feeds but I can't get anywhere without the down for maintenance page getting in the way.
