I really can't see where they fall, after all it's only few fields in database.

How hard can it be to write code that make the SQL updates?

But.... knowing SE past developers, they might have wrapped it with modules and packages all around the place. :P

They're not manually setting user flags for most part

(they might! And I know some things are hardcoded)

They'd need to integrate it with whatever they use to manage users

Another option, if they can't make it work, just remove the whole staff indicator from the sites, that's how it was for long years and SE staff can just write in their profile they work for SE.
