@cairdcoinheringaahing MSE enjoys both worlds: it's both a main site and a meta site. However, in the same time it's neither. So it's actually a Schrödinger's cat.
@SebastianSimon typical after downtime of the site, the browser needs to re-load the cached files that expired.

@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron You just didn't saw it then. There was one other in here last week at least, I know :)
@Tinkeringbell yeah, but in the recent months, there were cases of spam in MSE sitting for more than 5 minutes, and not reported by Smokey. The weird part was that when I tried to report it manually, Smokey said it's already reported.
So I just assumed something is broken and forgot about it.
(and stopped manually reporting spam.)
ah, like that :)
Wonder who's behind the two recent DDoS attacks...
Doesn't look like random attacker(s).
SRE team surely need a medal, they work extra hours to fight those attacks. :)
Well they're also not trying to stop the world from spinning, there's 'better' targets out there than a Q/A site if you actually want to achieve something in your life XD
Done.
@Tinkeringbell I have a very strong feeling the attacker knows SE very well, and they don't try to achieve anything, maybe except for some revenge.
07:26
Perhaps. That'd be one sad life achievement then though XD
Well there was recent case here in Israel, about a very talented young man, who worked on Israel's most sensitive and secret cyber projects. He was marked for greatness, until one day he got arrested, and died while in prison. >>cont.
Turns out he leaked secrets just to get a personal revenge against his direct officer.
(They didn't say what the officer did to him, but surely not something horrible enough to justify such things.)
Wonder if I can find English source for that...
Maybe he's now haunting SE servers from the afterlife then :P
@Tinkeringbell LOL
My point is some people have a very twisted sense of revenge.
And my point is that such a twisted sense of revenge makes for a very sad life :P
@Tinkeringbell oh, that is very true.
If only he would post on IPS question like "How to revenge my officer without committing crimes?" and got some help..... :D :D :D
07:37
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron I'm not sure revenge is an interpersonal skill :P Besides that, there's some precedent for just closing crap that's violating the CoC. I'm sure revenge would fall under 'not being nice' :P
Good point!
Almost 10, time for cakepresso. ;)
Not even 9 here, still a long day to go

@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron nu.nl/291278/video/… < Here's a thing you need to see :P The Dutch National Headwind Cycling Championship :P
@Tinkeringbell nice, but how is it related to my previous message? ;)
It's something you need to do while taking a break, obviously :P
oh lol
But I can't drink, eat, and watch something in the same time. Too multi tasking. :D
Ah, well, then skip the eating. It's healthier :P
09:21
Let's se... Is the dog here? @JourneymanGeek
Must have my sugar rush
@SPArcheon woof?
chewing @Spa's foot for pinging a mod
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron It really is better not to have a sugar rush :P It means there won't a sugar crash later :P
@Tinkeringbell can't have a crash when the rush is constant. :-D
(maybe during my four hour sleep? ;))
Hmmm It makes sense.
09:40
@SPArcheon to quote Nietzsche... Dog is dead...
But I'm available
for your enjoyment. Finally found someone that actually posted too...
https://stackoverflow.com/users/13901325/dr-johnson
Jokes aside, seems a compromised account?
@SPArcheon happens every now and then
@SPArcheon not much I can do there 😁
Ah
Two possiblties one is there's some dude who is actually writing his own escort service platform
The other is the person who actually created this account decided to use it????
@JourneymanGeek well that's a bit morbid
> This domain is expired. For renewal instructions please click here.
The site is dead.
09:54
@Mithical it is 😒
But people who use Stack Overflow can actually have escort sites, and even "worse".
This doesn't mean account was hacked. ;)
Yup
@Mithical my humor is sometimes like the coffee I accidentally drank this morning... Dark, bitter, slightly stale and completely unexpected (I grabbed the wrong container and .. oops... Downed it at once)
@JourneymanGeek at least you didn't replace sugar with salt..... :P
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron there was none
@JourneymanGeek lucky
10:04
It was uncut strong drip brewed coffee...
Usually needs at least an equal amount of milk to be drinkable
@JourneymanGeek milk in coffee is plain wrong xD
@Luuklag nope
Instant coffee must have milk :D
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron that isn't coffee
@Luuklag well it's written as "coffee" ;)
So you say they lie?! :D
10:25
@tripleee flagged, but still not deleted. :(
gone now :)
It is most satisfying to just cast the last flag, that's why I always wait so long :P
@Tinkeringbell lol
But you're not alone! ;)
Jan 10 at 14:10, by Spevacus
Bit satisfying to cast the last flag on 3 or 4 in a row
!!/coffee Spe
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron brews a cup of Affogato for @Spe
10:43
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron And guess WHO had to check...
10:57
@Luuklag Indian coffee always has milk
also imagine drinking a quarter cup of stale black coffee at one gulp when you're expecting water
11:21
@JourneymanGeek lol
@SPArcheon my pleasure.
:D

1 hour later…
12:42
@tripleee nope
(not me though)
that's what they all say
possible troll, closed but still up fitness.stackexchange.com/questions/44851
also how did they get 101 rep?
@tripleee An account somewhere with >200 rep. :P
13:09
@tripleee not a troll, and it's a valid question on some sites, like Medical Science, there are quite a few questions about masturbation in there. It's just someone who didn't know where to post.
@Tinkeringbell but then shouldn't the linked account be visible from their profile?
@tripleee hidden community
ahh of course
@tripleee Nope. Network profiles and hidden sites are hidden... which sucks :P
13:16
but why isn't their Fitness account there?
@Mithical lol he didn't bother to change the name on the hidden community, it's like this:
:D
@tripleee because it's hidden.
@Mithical How do you do that?
when used properly, i.e. when the user also changes the name and avatar on the hidden site, it's very hard to find their other sites.
ahhh I didn't realize that was the hidden one, I thought they had pivoted via a private Teams one
@tripleee no no, it's really simple. lol
No Teams involved.
Personally for such a "sensitive" question I'd use a sock account. ;)
(not a familiar sock)
13:20
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron Bleh. Such questions shouldn't be 'sensitive'. Then a.) People will actually learn how stuff works during sex education in school/from parents and b.) users can no longer resort to stuff like this for trolling :P
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron :) I just got some coffee.
....and of course, there's silly Quora thread about this exact topic, with totally non professional replies.
@Tinkeringbell I mean, it's embarrassing to have such a question associated to your public profile, kind of "too much details" about yourself.
@Tinkeringbell a good magician never reveals their secrets
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron Exactly, and it shouldn't be embarrassing to have asked any question.
@Spevacus with milk? ;)
@Mithical hey! I'm the Wizard here!
inviting @Mith to a duel
13:25
@Mithical Whatever then, keep your secrets. I'll just be here not noticing any networkwide problem users because I can't see what they're up to on other sites anymore!
@Tinkeringbell but it is... that's something I'd openly ask only close IRL friends. :)
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron Actually I use cream. We've got a Donuts + Coffee company here called "Dunkin'" (used to be Dunkin' Donuts) - Basically like Starbucks if you've ever heard of them - And they make a brand of creamer that's really good, you only need a little bit to give a lot of sweetness to the coffee.
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron That is my point, it shouldn't be! If it became more normal to ask/talk about such stuff, then...
@Spevacus huh! I use cream only in emergency, when out of milk. Don't like the taste, feels wrong. :P
To each their own :)
13:26
Indeed!
throwing cream on @Spe
@Spevacus So, is it really worth the money? Starbucks is crazy expensive, and usually not even that good.
@Tinkeringbell hehe, well, that's just how most people feel/behave. Most won't dare to ask even when totally anonymous.
@Tinkeringbell So... The creamer product is about $3 per bottle which is pretty darn cheap, and it's pretty good. I don't like the store itself (going and buying donuts + coffee or w/e) as it's as you say, pretty expensive and typically not worth it.
Oh! Didn't realize you can buy the creamer separately, so I thought you just got it with your coffee :P
13:28
Though I will say if I ever do end up going out for coffee, I would prefer Starbucks. It varies on location but I haven't had many bad experiences there.
Yeah, they sell it at the supermarkets here. Pretty nice, actually.
@Spevacus Perhaps my problem is also that except for the occasional latte, I don't drink much coffee. A latte and a cup of tea are both almost 4 euros (for the smallest size) at Starbucks. For the same amount of money, I can have a package of 20 tea bags ( < 2 euros) and heat the water at home and not taste the difference XD
I'm sure I could make a latte for less than 4 euros too, once I get my own fancy coffee machine :D
Wow, that's really expensive. A small latte from Starbucks is around $3 here, which is about 2.60 euros. That markup is nuts!
@Tinkeringbell o_0 You cannot taste the difference between coffee and tea?
@DavidPostill she does hate tomatos...
@DavidPostill Between tea and tea :P
But to be fair, I find their lattes always have this weirdly sweet (but not a good sweet?) aftertaste.
Better to make one at home :)
@Spevacus Over here, you definitely pay for the brand, not the quality. That goes for about everything that blows over from the US :)
13:38
Sorry! :D
No need to apologize... if people are crazy enough to spend money on it...
It's good because it means other people have jobs.
Fancy coffee maker, steamer, espresso thinggy, flux capacitor,
I've been considering buying the same kind of coffee maker my parents have ... but the one thing that's not right is that the reservoir for the milk is on the left side... I don't want that, as I want to put the whole thing onto a corner of the kitchen counter, not somewhere centered :P
14:03
@Tinkeringbell Espresso machine? I just bought recently a machine where the milk container it attached in the front right side.
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron Yes, something like that. But then one where you use coffee beans (not cups) and can make two cups of coffee at once :)
@Tinkeringbell oh, neat!
I was never fan of those, too lazy to clean it afterwards. :D
So it's capsules for me.
Probably more expensive, but I can handle it.
I think this is the type my parents have.
@Tinkeringbell whoa looks professional, the kind coffee shops have.
Maybe. I think the professional devices are even fancier (e.g. the office has one with a mini-fridge, which holds the milk)

Jeremiah Peschkatl;dr Planned service interruption that will impact all Stack Exchange sites, Jobs, and Chat. All sites may be read-only for up to 2 hours on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 2:00AM UTC (Friday, February 18, 2022 at 9:00PM US/ET). On-premises Enterprise instances will not be affected. Guest Post on February 07, 2022
Databases today are built for Big Data. But what happens when the metadata is bigger?
@Feeds onebox is what drags your chat up
First time I see "Guest post". So the author identity is a secret? That's just silly, IMO. (In a public blog.)
That's not NSA. It's Stack Exchange.
ohh should have known, it's yet another onebox bug... one out of 100000000.... lol
Author is written in the blog post itself.
So when the onebox finally shows, it shows partial/wrong details. Typical.
At least the title is correct. :D
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron I'm not sure why it shows up as 'guest post', but I've seen it before. Usually that just means it's some kind of advert written by someone that doesn't work for SE :P
The one from this blog post is "the cofounder and CEO of Speedb, the next-generation data engine." according to their blog bio.
And, indeed, if you scroll down to the last paragraph, there's the product placement: "Recognizing the problems metadata generates and the limitations within current data engines is what drove us to found Speedb, the data engine that provides faster performance at scale."
Probably shouldn't have clicked that and generated the 'revenue' XD
"Guest post" is a clear warning not to click on it so you too can avoid contributing to capitalism :P
15:22
@Tinkeringbell thing is, what's written in the blog post itself and in the onebox, is different. Very. If it was the same in the post, I would agree. But it's not.
At least it doesn't say "John Doe", or some random name...
That is because the onebox is actually useful: It warns you!
:P
@Tinkeringbell nah, it becomes more and more useless over time.
@Tinkeringbell lol
My soup is too hot :(
But yeah, I do realize that it's a weird discrepancy. I've come to like it, as it immediately warns me that 'oh, not interesting/advertisement/not about how SE works'. Bit like using your space bar to overheat your processor so your PC shuts down :P
Well, bottom line: onebox has one simple task, to show summary of whatever it's oneboxing. And it fails even this task.
Either just not showing at all, or showing different data from the actual data.

16:29
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron I've seen guest post quite a few times, and those were also some of the few times onebox worked.
"worked" as in, "appeared", regardless of what's being shown
17:29
@Tinkeringbell though you may find this funny.
The Animal Crossing mobile game has a paid for monthly subscription that gives you access to a in-game shop where you can spend more money.
Just like the game itself... so much respect for Tom Nook!
@SPArcheon capitalism at its finest.
@MetaAndrewT. you know, this comment made my day.
Haven't played animal crossing for ages now though... I think I quit around turkey day 2020 XD. Played for a teeny tiny bit after the last big update but.. not much
@Tinkeringbell well, I just wanted to share the "pay to unlock the real-money shop" feature for a laugh.
17:38
A laugh? That is outright depressing :P
18:12
@Tinkeringbell Did I mention that the shop is already accessible even without the plan but you get an error message if you try to buy anything telling you that you need the subscription? And the shop menu button sparkles whenever a "rare" sticker is on sale?
BTW, based on comments I read on twitter/reddit, some strikers cost about 0.50 €/$
Yeah, like I said, depressing
Though I'm not entirely against in-app purchases (I find they're a nice way to 'donate' some money to developers of otherwise free to play games, especially if they managed to balance the purchases so it's not turned the game into pay-to-win) this is really feeling like they're milking something for all it's worth
