@cairdcoinheringaahing MSE enjoys both worlds: it's both a main site and a meta site. However, in the same time it's neither. So it's actually a Schrödinger's cat.
@SebastianSimon typical after downtime of the site, the browser needs to re-load the cached files that expired.
@Tinkeringbell yeah, but in the recent months, there were cases of spam in MSE sitting for more than 5 minutes, and not reported by Smokey. The weird part was that when I tried to report it manually, Smokey said it's already reported.
So I just assumed something is broken and forgot about it.
Well they're also not trying to stop the world from spinning, there's 'better' targets out there than a Q/A site if you actually want to achieve something in your life XD
Well there was recent case here in Israel, about a very talented young man, who worked on Israel's most sensitive and secret cyber projects. He was marked for greatness, until one day he got arrested, and died while in prison. >>cont.
Turns out he leaked secrets just to get a personal revenge against his direct officer.
(They didn't say what the officer did to him, but surely not something horrible enough to justify such things.)
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron I'm not sure revenge is an interpersonal skill :P Besides that, there's some precedent for just closing crap that's violating the CoC. I'm sure revenge would fall under 'not being nice' :P
@Mithical my humor is sometimes like the coffee I accidentally drank this morning... Dark, bitter, slightly stale and completely unexpected (I grabbed the wrong container and .. oops... Downed it at once)
@tripleee not a troll, and it's a valid question on some sites, like Medical Science, there are quite a few questions about masturbation in there. It's just someone who didn't know where to post.
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron Bleh. Such questions shouldn't be 'sensitive'. Then a.) People will actually learn how stuff works during sex education in school/from parents and b.) users can no longer resort to stuff like this for trolling :P
@Mithical Whatever then, keep your secrets. I'll just be here not noticing any networkwide problem users because I can't see what they're up to on other sites anymore!
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron Actually I use cream. We've got a Donuts + Coffee company here called "Dunkin'" (used to be Dunkin' Donuts) - Basically like Starbucks if you've ever heard of them - And they make a brand of creamer that's really good, you only need a little bit to give a lot of sweetness to the coffee.
@Tinkeringbell So... The creamer product is about $3 per bottle which is pretty darn cheap, and it's pretty good. I don't like the store itself (going and buying donuts + coffee or w/e) as it's as you say, pretty expensive and typically not worth it.
Though I will say if I ever do end up going out for coffee, I would prefer Starbucks. It varies on location but I haven't had many bad experiences there.
Yeah, they sell it at the supermarkets here. Pretty nice, actually.
@Spevacus Perhaps my problem is also that except for the occasional latte, I don't drink much coffee. A latte and a cup of tea are both almost 4 euros (for the smallest size) at Starbucks. For the same amount of money, I can have a package of 20 tea bags ( < 2 euros) and heat the water at home and not taste the difference XD
I'm sure I could make a latte for less than 4 euros too, once I get my own fancy coffee machine :D
I've been considering buying the same kind of coffee maker my parents have ... but the one thing that's not right is that the reservoir for the milk is on the left side... I don't want that, as I want to put the whole thing onto a corner of the kitchen counter, not somewhere centered :P
tl;dr Planned service interruption that will impact all Stack Exchange sites, Jobs, and Chat. All sites may be read-only for up to 2 hours on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 2:00AM UTC (Friday, February 18, 2022 at 9:00PM US/ET). On-premises Enterprise instances will not be affected.
Short Version...
@ShadowWizardHatesOmicron I'm not sure why it shows up as 'guest post', but I've seen it before. Usually that just means it's some kind of advert written by someone that doesn't work for SE :P
The one from this blog post is "the cofounder and CEO of Speedb, the next-generation data engine." according to their blog bio.
And, indeed, if you scroll down to the last paragraph, there's the product placement: "Recognizing the problems metadata generates and the limitations within current data engines is what drove us to found Speedb, the data engine that provides faster performance at scale."
Probably shouldn't have clicked that and generated the 'revenue' XD
"Guest post" is a clear warning not to click on it so you too can avoid contributing to capitalism :P
@Tinkeringbell thing is, what's written in the blog post itself and in the onebox, is different. Very. If it was the same in the post, I would agree. But it's not.
At least it doesn't say "John Doe", or some random name...
But yeah, I do realize that it's a weird discrepancy. I've come to like it, as it immediately warns me that 'oh, not interesting/advertisement/not about how SE works'. Bit like using your space bar to overheat your processor so your PC shuts down :P
Haven't played animal crossing for ages now though... I think I quit around turkey day 2020 XD. Played for a teeny tiny bit after the last big update but.. not much
@Tinkeringbell Did I mention that the shop is already accessible even without the plan but you get an error message if you try to buy anything telling you that you need the subscription? And the shop menu button sparkles whenever a "rare" sticker is on sale?
BTW, based on comments I read on twitter/reddit, some strikers cost about 0.50 €/$
Though I'm not entirely against in-app purchases (I find they're a nice way to 'donate' some money to developers of otherwise free to play games, especially if they managed to balance the purchases so it's not turned the game into pay-to-win) this is really feeling like they're milking something for all it's worth
