16:30
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating thats cool
I've being thinking of joining the reserves for a while now, but first I should get into shape and probably ask my employer about it.
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating no, because it's tomorrow night (i.e. Friday)
@Luuklag looks like the kid has terrible trigger discipline, should never have reached the sa'al rank
@Luuklag yeah, though for tasks like bringing food to people in COVID quarantine you don't really need to be in shape.
Job is different story, you can't just leave it for days/weeks.
@Mithical ohh... OK so what will you be tomorrow night (i.e. Friday)? ;)
I'll be dressing up as a civilian... :P
@Mithical doubt Luuk has chance to know what sa'al means... ;)
@Mithical :D
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating I always struggle to remember the difference between סגן אלוף, אלוף משנה, and תת אלוף
Rob
Rob
16:40
@MetaAndrewT. non-moving cheese 🪤
And I never remember the name of a single falafel
@Mithical shoes are also non standard, don't fit for army service.
חמש אצבעות על ידית האחיזה!
@Mithical you are correct, that's סא"ל... one falafel is רס"ן, two is סא"ל, three is אל"מ, swords are תא"ל, swords and one falafel is אלוף and last but not least, swords and two falafels are רא"ל aka רמטכ"ל
The last one I generally remember
:p
Rob
Rob
@Tinkeringbell 176 + at least two secret sites.
Oh, and one coffin is סג"מ, two coffins is סגן and three coffins is סרן. @Mith
@Mithical yup, the most said sentence during טירונות. :D
...and no bars is טוראי, two is רב"ט, three is סמל, and three with a leaf is ס"מר
@Rob If they're secret, how do you know about them?
Sadly, the kid wasn't properly trained. ;)
Rob
Rob
16:45
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating 4 ply
@Mithical yup
And there are also רס"ל, רס"מ, etc.
My first girlfriend's father was רנ"ג.
Yeah, one of my mefakdim is a רס"ם
The highest non-officer rank possible.
Rob
Rob
@Tinkeringbell You can visit, but there's a nag to login, even the Tour and Help links don't work, but the pulldown for them does.
is still technically a טוראי
16:48
@Mithical ouch. Well you'll get to רב"ט soon enough. :D
I mean... I'm only four months into service at this point, so makes sense
@Mithical think I got mine in the end of the אימון מתקדם or whatever it was of the artillery forces, i.e. when I was qualified to actually start doing something. ;)
Makes sense
I'm not actually certified for my position yet either...
Then after about two years, סמל is given only due to being veteran, even if you're not really commanding anyone.
@Rob no it will still be dirty.
e.g. now it's on 106
17:07
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating you'll need to do an expedited basic training. So some condition is good to have.
@Mithical true
Rob
Rob
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating You need to upgrade to 10-ply, or better.
17:23
@Rob hahaha
How do you always manage to find these rediculous things @Rob?
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating this sounds like strange dinner
Rob
Rob
@Luuklag Only the best for you.

1 hour later…
18:51
@Luuklag oh, forgot about that, yeah...
@Rob yes this would work, but alas, the bugs won't be fixed. I'll spend all day in toilets trying out this marvelous paper. :D
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating bring your laptop
@Luuklag rofl!! "falafel" in this context refers to the officer's rank, see in the picture what the kid has:
Rob
Rob
Laptop on the Bottompot.
for some reason, people in Israel decided it looks like a falafel
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating looks more like a maple or cannabis leaf if you ask me ;)
18:57
@Luuklag yup
The actual rank is this:
Source:
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has a unique rank structure. Because the IDF is an integrated force, ranks are the same in all services (there is no differentiation between army, navy, air force, etc.) The ranks are derived from those used in the pre-state paramilitary Haganah, which operated during the Mandate period in order to protect the Yishuv. This is reflected in the slightly compacted rank structure: for instance, the Chief of Staff (rosh ha-mate ha-klali, initials: Ramatkal) is seemingly only equivalent to a lieutenant general in other militaries. == Current ranks == Officers (ktzinim...
Just looked up same pictures @ShadowWizardisVaccinating
@Luuklag yup that's the highest rank.
Commander of the whole army.
Many times it's a starting point for politics, and usually it doesn't end well.
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating haha yeah they shouldn't mix
Don't think we have such a history of appointing miliary personal as politicians
Not mix, that's forbidden of course. After they retire.
yeah exactly, but I don't think that happens much here
my FIL was in the military, retired now
19:03
Thing is, the political predators can easily take down those who arrive from the military.
@Luuklag FIL?
Father In Law
oh lol
I'm bad in acronyms
that's an acronym i haven't seen before
So if you mention it, guess he was something senior? @Luuk
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating IIRC he equaled a Aluf mishne
19:05
My brother reached one "falafel", commanded a battle ship, then retired from army.
@user400654 Heard them a lot, FIL, SIL, BIL, MIL (notice the absence of an F)
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating he had to retire because he turned 56, but then managed to add 2 more years
Last few years were kinda the fun jobs
Being the military ambassador to Turkey
and then being station in Florida as the Dutch liason to the coalition that fought in the middle east
Those kinda jobs come with great extra perks
@Luuklag hmm... I don't think age plays a role here for active and good officers, not sure.
@Luuklag yeah, nice! He brought nice gifts?
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating we had some nice vacations for practically free
I once flew to turkey (Ankarra) to help them drive a car back to NL
@Luuklag yeah that's fun indeed! :P
Only took 36 hours
19:12
@Luuklag that's a good idea!
They didn't want to take the dog in the plane, so we drove.
@Luuklag driving is more fun, you get the scenic ways.
I drove for hours in the USA just to see the views.
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating well it was terrible weather, we drove day and night, and it was at the height of refugees trying to get into europ through the balkan
really sad to see that
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating In the uSA you drive for hours just to get to the next town
19:14
@Luuklag lol, also true. Well, I took long routes on purpose. :)
Here it's 6 hours from top to bottom of the whole country.
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating here its even less xD
But your quicker if you take a german highway
Oh no, not quicker, just shorter actually
Rob
Rob
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Did you mix up two types; that's Lt. with two, and there's a difference between that and the photo first referred to:
The second leaf has veins.
The first looks like weed.
19:52
btw @Catija you got a warm house again?
20:05
Heck, it's 75F out today. The whole city is warm. Still no hot water, though.
@Catija thats annoying, what happened to that, your heater broke down?
@Catija yeah such massive changes are the new normal I guess.
We went from -12C to +18C within 10 days
@Catija That looks mounted outside, no wonder it froze to bits
Is it standard to mount those outside where you live?
I'm currently sitting only a few feet away from mine on the attic
It's not ... unusual, no. It doesn't freeze here often and they're generally rated to get a certain temperature and they're supposed to be smart enough to prevent icing up... apparently not in this case.
@Catija and now probably everyone needs a new one and it takes weeks to get one right
20:18
Apparently they're sending us parts to replace the blown bits but... I'm not sure when they should be arriving.
They were going to overnight them as of Sunday but they haven't arrived, so it's likely they haven't left the warehouse yet?
Fingers crossed they arrive soon and you can atleast take a normal shower again soon
@Catija so much for overnight
Yeah. I'm about to go find a place to take a shower because the old fashioned "heat a pot of water and then do what you can" thing isn't working for me. Though, I suppose it's better than nothing.
@Catija yeah at least you can wash your hair that way
HAHAHA. My hair is dunno... a half meter long, maybe more? Andy can but it's easier for me to wash it in the kitchen sink with the spray nozzle and just use cold water.
@Catija As long as you have a large pot ;). My wife cut mine 2 weeks back or so, while hairdressers are still closed. Now their reopening in 2 weeks or so, but she did actually a pretty decent job. More a case of taking the kids in, as the boys are getting their hair in front of their eyes by now.
20:27
Yeah, my 4-year-old has his bangs down to his nose but he won't let us cut it. We have clips for his hair but I guess he's waiting for it to go behind his ears.
I generally don't mind much if my kids have any preference, but seeing their only 2 they can hardly expalin themselves, let alone their desired hairstyle xD And now its just at a point where I notice it bothers them, so better get an appointment quickly
Twins? Fun! :D
@Catija yeah, two twin boys of 2, and a daughter of 4,5
I cut the bangs on my 2-year-old and his hair is relatively curly, so the length isn't too bad as long as I keep the bangs short.
The 4-year-old has actually had his hair cut more recently - I kinda wonder whether the little one's hair grows very fast at this point.
@Luuklag That's sweet! Sounds like our kids are the same age. :)
Yours look cute! My boys are real rebels, theyll do anyhing they aren't allowed to do. And being twins theire far less sensitive to punishment unfortunately :(
No way anyone is getting anything done when their around
20:34
Yeah, that sounds like trouble! :D My little one is adorable but he's got crocodile tears - and he just learned to pout - which is adorable. He's also a mimic - if his big brother does something, he's going to do it, too. The big one is... not super interested in doing anything we ask him to do. :(
Our doughter want's to be grown up really badly. It's also amazing how well she can conversate with adults. I have a feeling that isn't really normal for her age. But she would love the most to be the mother of her little brothers.
That's really awesome! It's so hard at that age to put thoughts into words. I can tell with mine that he's thinking lots of big things but not always able to make that into words. He speaks fine but sometimes he has to think a lot before spitting something out.
Yeah definetly, compared to her brothers she always has been quicker with words. But to the boys defense they spoke in "Twin" for a while. Was really funny to see that they could perfectly understand each others mumblings, and we were left clueless
21:27
@Catija Here's a picture of mine btw, on my wifes blog: betuwekids.nl/polder-bolgerijen Can't copy paste the image cause it's hosted on google and it has an insanely long url :/
One before I got my hair cut xD
@Luuklag So cute! :D Y'all look like a happy family :D
@Catija Most of the time we are ;)
Do the twins like being dressed alike? Or is it just the coats?
My 2-year-old definitely has preferences about clothes, so I thought they might, too.
@Catija they don't really have a preference when it comes to clothes. My wife likes them dressed alike, so we have everything double.
But were not that specific that when one needs a change of clothes we change the other as well
Our daughter was really picky about clothes as soon as she could let us know.
22:08
I just came across a case where a user posted an offensive post and proceeded to self-delete it. Should I flag it for moderators to re-delete as spam/offensive?
I've done that with spam posts before, since self-deleted spam can later be undeleted by the author without leaving a trace on the home page. But should I do the same with offensive posts?
I'd say yes. Also in this way they don't get the penalty
@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog This account is temporarily suspended network-wide. The suspension period ends in 7 days.
I guess you are talking about a user that starts with André
@Luuklag Nope
A different user
Oh no, that was a community deletion
Continuing, I'm not sure if I should, since a self-deletion of an offensive post, unlike a spam post, can mean a genuine recanting of the post, rather than a plan to later undelete the post once it's slid off the page
let the moderators decide
its what they're there for
22:17
@user400654 The question is, should I flag?
well yea
otherwise they may not be aware of it
I don't want to risk a penalty for a declined flag if they decide not to take action on it.
there's no such penalty that you're likely anywhere close to
Well, there's less leniency if I later get other declined flags. Better to have leeway
Was it here at mse?
22:43
If I were acting as a mod, I'd probably undelete and re-mod-delete to ensure it couldn't be simply undeleted by the user, but I'm not sure I would apply a binding R/A flag in that case. How quickly did the user self-delete the post?
23:14
Well guys im off, finally got my proposal done
not too shabby at 00:15 am
