@Rob @Ollie That's true for the Area 51 main site itself, but the Area 51 Discussions site uses the modern SE software and as such is being maintained.

@Shadow10YearsWizard When there's a security issue, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Not sure it's security, no "real" private info is leaked, e.g. real name, email, IP. Still serious matter, but not critical IMO.

Could be used to harass someone over their preferences ("hey, why didn't you collapse the left nav?")
"why are you hiding HNQ? Why don't you like it?"
Well, it seems I was wrong about it being winter in San Diego last week. That was just a preview; the real thing happens at the end of this week.

The real question is: Can one user change another user's settings?

Didn't work for me. The box changed, but refreshing the page showed no actual change.
Also, the "data collection" checkbox will always load the preference from your own profile rather than the other user's profile, and save to your own profile as well.

@Shadow10YearsWizard I don't mind, I kinda like thing being neat.

We had a cleaner, but since the Corona began, not anymore.
@Luuklag not when you're required to make it neat yourself.... o_O

@Shadow10YearsWizard Well yeah, I'm lazy too, but yeah.

Can you create a chat room from a question or comment chain as a regular user, or do you just have to manually make and title it?

9:25 AM
If you post too many comment you will be asked to continue the discussion in chat right?

Yes, but that sounds like abuse to me
I essentially want to do that before there are too many comments

Well then you probably have to go manual, but I'm not 100% sure

@OrangeDog other than the automatic trigger (which won't work if there are 3 or more commenters already), you have to manually create it, or ask a mod to move them to the chat

Ok, thanks all
Oh, even if I specifically add them, they don't have enough rep
A mod-created comment chatroom doesn't have that restriction?

So, any wagers as on how many days it will take before the US have finished their vote counting?

Worst I've heard is Friday?
Didn't say which one though.

Pennsylvania, most probably. Where I voted. By absentee ballot. Yay!

Yeah they all went to bed, and will only continue counting in the morning.
strange method if you'd ask me

It really depends on certain results, we probably could have enough results to determine the winner today. But results for all states are friday at the earliest, all votes even later

Really strange that things take that long. Usually in NL they have counted, and possibly recounted all votes within 24 hours.

1:16 PM
We usually have a preliminary result at 18:05 on election day, and that changes maybe 1-2% per party until the preliminary official results the next day

@Luuklag Everything about the US presidential electoral system is strange. As far as I know it's completely unique: each state has its own rules, especially about when to start counting and until when to accept ballots, then you have the whole strangeness of the elector system that allows candidates to win the popular vote but lose the election. It's really, really strange to people used to regular systems.

Well we have sort of a tiered election like that as well in the NL.
but only for the "Eerste Kamer"

@terdon I mean it didn't say which Friday :P

Kind of comparable with the Senate in the US

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I got that eventually :)
@Luuklag Yes, but this isn't about the senate, I'm talking about the elector system where each state has a certain number of "electors" and in the vast majority (only 2 exceptions, I think) whoever wins the vote in the state gets all of the electors.

1:21 PM
Here you vote for the province council, which then elects the eerste kamer

@Luuklag I mean, there's a bit less votes here probably, and we generally don't get to vote by mail.

@Luuklag Yes, that's like the senate. Not like the elector system.

@Tinkeringbell Less votes certainly, but in the US there should be an equivalent number of people able to count votes, so that should make no difference
@terdon well more or less, since the chosen representatives of the provinces elect the eerste kamer. Only difference is that it isn't winner takes al

Mail-in ballots are a pain to count. You need to open the envelope, then manually check that the signature on the ballot matches the signature on file. So presumably you'd have to first look up the voter, try to figure out which of the 15 "Mary Smiths" she is, then look up her signature and compare it.

@Luuklag They use voting machines because they can't figure out how to count by hand fast enough. So nothing surprises me in that regard in the US

1:23 PM
There's no official country-wide ID so there's no easy way to match names to people.

It's as if voting by paper and counting by hand was some kind of magic

@terdon no social security number?

I'm pretty sure there's no signature matching in mail-in ballots here in Germany

@MadScientist Those are outlawed here, as being to sensitive to fraud

@Luuklag Not connected to voting.
@MadScientist But presumably you have some sort of voter registration ID or something, right?

1:25 PM
@terdon You guys dug yourselves a serious hole

I know. It's ridiculous. Hell, I've never even lived in the US, my father is American so I have the nationality and the right to vote, but little other connection to the country.

@terdon Everyone is automatically registered to vote. I only voted by mail once, I don't remember what was in there. But as they send you the ballot, I think they just print some ID in there (or maybe use the passport ID)

@MadScientist Yeah. In the US you need to register to vote for some reason.

I wonder how elections are going to happen here in NL in the spring. I heard their are also thinking about mail-in votes, and extending the voting over 3 days, instead of a single wednesday.
Here you just get your voter card by mail, then you hand in that card at the polling station, at which they give you a ballot in return.

I think you can probably make in-person elections safe enough with what we know now.

1:29 PM
@terdon Perhaps because in Europe we are far more stringent in keeping on file each persons adres

I think from what I remember from going with my parents to vote as a child, voting over here is rather simple.
The only hard thing is figuring out who the heck to vote for.

Agreed @Tinkeringbell, perhaps we also need just 2 parties ;)

All parties make lovely promises and then boom! poldermodel and nothing ever comes exactly true as promised.
@Luuklag I vote we split the choice between Denk and PVV :P

Well in that case the entire elections will be if we abolish or retain zwarte piet ;)

I'd vote for dissappointing regular politicians all the time over whatever the US has

1:31 PM
@Tinkeringbell nuke this spammer please: meta.stackexchange.com/users/880614/wormand

@Luuklag Just change the thing to soot striped already. It's a figment of imagination ffs
@Luuklag Woah, busy one :D

@Tinkeringbell I aint even going to parttake in this discussion, I find it too pointless. And no matter what you say you end up hurting a group of people.

@Tinkeringbell you mean you've never voted?

@Luuklag Hah. True ;)
@terdon Never had the time to figure out who to vote for.

@Tinkeringbell Brought me 3 flags closer to my marshall badge ;)

1:33 PM
wow. OK

@Tinkeringbell You never took the time to figure that out.

I can take an online tool, and it'll tell me which party's program matches my own ideal's best, but it does never take into account which party has the best success rate when it comes to making their promises come true...
I don't care about spending hours on statistics like that, true.
@Luuklag Should've made sure you didn't get enough rep to vote to close before having that badge and you'd be there so fast!

I'm quite undecided on the exact party most of the time, but I know for sure the mainstream parties are all far, far better than the rightwing populists, so I certainly vote every time

Eh, we're not nearly at American levels of 'you need to vote or the idiots get power'. So shrug.
It's certainly lovely to be able to just ignore politics :)

If I can't decide on a party I like, I'll cast a blank ballot. If only to say that "none of you work for me, but I do care!"

1:36 PM
Well I don't really care for strategic voting, I just vote what party's program resonates most with me that year. And in case I'm really undecided I just make an illegal vote, so as my blank ballot doesn't get appointed to any party.

Close enough in some states shortly after the refugee crisis. We're certainly not safe from that (though the US as always has a much bigger version of the same basic problem)

@MadScientist Yeah, mag mentioned something about that in Germany as well... that honestly sucks.
@Luuklag Most parties don't really put 'cutting out the nonsense and just be nice people to each other' on their program though :P
Instead they just polarize further.
Like terdon's blank vote, your illegal vote... they're not votes for something, they're votes against something... I don't like the whole 'if you're for this than you're by definition against that'
Which is basically politics in one sentence these days.

@Tinkeringbell Well then you'll end up with the CDA, with (a traditional) family as the cornerstone of society ;)

For me there is a big differences between the democratic parties that are often deeply flawed and that I don't agree with in many things, and the more extreme parties that are in the end opposed to some parts of our constitutional principles. I always vote at least for one of the democratic forces, because I don't want the extreme ones to become stronger

@Tinkeringbell At least it shows you do care

1:44 PM
Sure, and I'm not saying no-one should care. Just that I can't be bothered to unless my life really depends on it.
If the worlds holds out until I die of old age or morbesity, without me ever having to care about politics, I'm good.
I'm honestly done hearing people shout they're against this and that without ever explaining what they are for then.

@Luuklag wait, what? Blank ballots are appointed to the winner in your system? They're not discarded?
@Tinkeringbell Not quite. Ideally, a blank vote is a vote that says "I am in favor of democracy but I have nobody to vote for that speaks for me". It a way of informing the political class that there are people they aren't reaching so perhaps something needs to change.
Practically, they're a wasted vote, I know. But they're still the best option available sometimes.

@terdon No they are equally devided over all parties. And that is significant in some cases, as that could make the difference with appointing fractional seats

@Luuklag Seriously? That seems absurd!
In that case, you should never cast a blank in NL, absolutely! Wow.

@terdon Yeah trying to figure out exactly how that works again

> Een blanco stem wordt in Nederland wel meegerekend in het opkomstpercentage, maar heeft geen invloed op de uitslag van de verkiezingen.

1:52 PM
@terdon Well seems this is an urban myth that is deeply rooted. Invalid, nor blank votes, matter in the results
@Tinkeringbell yeah. That is the case. They only use valid votes to determine the amount of votes it takes to win a seat.

:D
Good. Now stop scaring terdon ;)

Yeah I really should get back to programming my VBA ;)

Magik here. But yes. Programming. Now, what line of code was I on again? :P

@Tinkeringbell -1 ;)

@Luuklag No... I was at the point where it needs to compile.
Which means I have 5 minutes to spare again XD

2:16 PM
@Luuklag Sorry, I don't get that. Which ones are distributed among all candidates? invalid or blank?

None of them, They are only counted in voters turnout.

A blue moon is an additional full moon that appears in a subdivision of a year: either the third of four full moons in a season, or a second full moon in a month of the common calendar. The phrase in modern usage has nothing to do with the actual color of the Moon, although a visually blue Moon (the Moon appearing with a bluish tinge) may occur under certain atmospheric conditions—for instance, if volcanic eruptions or fires release particles in the atmosphere of just the right size to preferentially scatter red light. == Definition == The term has traditionally, in the Maine Farmer's Almanac...

@QueenieGoldstein The answer to the question that you are asking: Vandalism Flags, then roll your own if you have permission, or custom flag if you don't. For those who have a New User banner you can go the last mile and politely ask them not to vandalize posts; explaining that once posted it's community property.

6:53 PM
Catija and Rob, thanks for your response. I flagged the post which had vandalised content as spam (because they spammed -(hyphen) in a literal sense). The flag got declined so I headed to Meta SE to find that it should have been rude/abusive but also that the value of spam or RA is same. That's why I asked if there is a specific flag for vandalism.

7:21 PM
@QueenieGoldstein Problem is that spam flags feeds automated anti spam system. False positives are bad for that system. So e.g. post consisting of just gibberish shouldn't be flagged as spam, because it will confuse the anti spam system.

@Shadow10YearsWizard This is the anti spam of SE? or the sdc?

@QueenieGoldstein of SE itself.

ouhhh that's why

it should still be captured by the anti-spam system, just under a different label, shouldn't it?

It prevents most spam from even being posted in advance, what we see it just a trickle if not for that system.
Think it's called "Spam Ram".
Ryan Donovan on June 25, 2020
If you put a textbox on the Internet, someone will put spam in it. If you put a textbox on a site that gets millions of hits a day, lots of someones will put lots of spam in it. So Stack Exchange uses multiple layers to block all the spam coming in.

Why aren't links to a Beta site's Meta given in the profile page, like the others?

Rob
@QueenieGoldstein The two posts immediately prior to the question you asked, to which I replied, you would reply to as shown in the link I gave you. It's always safe to leave things to other people, both those posts have been handled. --- If you meant something else don't make us guess; a link to sources is always helpful if the context is unclear.

Baaah, got it.

@Ollie Hmmm? They are - you just have to have a profile on meta for the link to show up. If they've never visited meta, you don't have a link to the user's meta profile (because there isn't one).

@Catija Yeah, I got it.
Another question:
Why is it all bleached out? That's from SO main in Dark Mode.
Shouldn't the stack be orange?

Probably because it was determined that the orange didn't look good on black.
Or something.

Because orange looks goooooood on black.

in this case it isn't on top of black

Q: Text Editors with the smallest total LOC

Nordine LotfiI'm aware of certain Text Editors that would be called "small" in term of LOC, or "Line Of Code". I'm also aware it's no the best way to demonstrate (nor the only one) how small a codebase is, but it is the one I decided to use for this post. Aug 12 at 8:09, by Rob
@M.A.R. I wouldn't count on Biden your time.

So to get things straight, if biden wins michigan and nevada (where he both is in the lead right now) he wins?

theoretically... but technically, that doesn't occur till december
or is it january

yeah their willl be legal battles untill eternity

if it gets tied up in court, we'll end up with president pelosi till it's all figured out

Trump must count himself lucky he managed to install a new judge in supreme court right before the elections

9:17 PM
@Luuklag Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Nevada and it's 270 to 268 for Biden.
There's some chance Biden will get Pennsylvania or Georgia, which would make this far more robust

@MadScientist arizona and wisconsin were already allocated to Biden
according to Associated Press

@Luuklag They're not entirely sure things
which is why I mentioned them
They're very likely to go for Biden

With a llikelyhood closing in on certainty ;)

I'm just hoping for Pennsylvania, that would remove most ways this could go wrong because it has so many EC votes

until the state's AG announces the total, it's just a projection... but that did occcur in wisconsin, so it's the official result, pending an expected recount in 10 days and ensuing court battle over votes that arrived from the USPS after 8pm on nov3rd
of which... i don't expect there are many, but the margins are so small that a court win could change the result

9:21 PM
Our local state news has this fun chart that shows all results. Lovely to see how voting district take no account of logical borders whatsover. You've got to love gerymandering
yeah this game won't be over before christmas I guess

we'll at least know within a day or two what the result will rely on
when georgia and nevada finish

So how does one win for example pensylvania, just the most votes in the entire state? As there are 20 electors to devide, but far more county's to vote in

honestly, i think "objectively" speaking, there never a good ruler these days...whether it's because some part of the country/population is upset, or because the overhaul total population of said country would be upset is another problem (or maybe part of the problem?)

I think the best thing would be if in some country (so they set the example for other one) would implement a system that would "force" ruler to keep their promises, in human ways, like:

- Pay them less depending on X amount of time not fulfilling X promise

@Luuklag most states are winner takes it all, so you win the entire state at once

@MadScientist so simply based on total votes

9:28 PM
yes

10:09 PM
Well Biden is pretty confident he is going to win
Now most media say he takes Michigan

99%

yeah, if it truly is 99%, then biden wins. Seeing there are about 6M votes, and he leads with 70K

fox has it listed as 264/214, that's why he went on a tweet spree

Well yeah I never know which media "belongs" to which side
but Fox generally is pro-Trump right?

yea

10:28 PM
I love how twitter puts all these warnings on trump's tweets for probably being false

@Luuklag even if either party win, it won't be 100% sure until january at most, since either party can go the legal/court ways...whatever that is.

@NordTheLoftyWizard the elector votes are cast in december

@MadScientist yeah, but i heard that it "could" still be contested until January 10 or something. Don't know if it's true but yeah

Rob
Both sides have said: "Count all the votes.", some States have until the 12th, most Reps voted in person (and are counted, mostly) while more Dems mailed in (and remain uncounted, ATM). Currently both are barely within margin of error tied, with the Reps leading; so make your own prediction.

Biden pretty clearly has the better chances right now

10:42 PM
The only state that hasn't been called yet that is certainly going to Trump will be alaska

NC i think is safely in that bucket too

difference is 80K more or less
and less then 60K votes left to count, so yea
