Uh oh... Yaakov removed the featured tag on the mod agreement update post. Incoming calamity.

@Shadow just throwing it out there, it does not belong here.

nah
yaakov is widely liked

Ta, y'all.

@Spevacus either something new is coming up or it just didn't need to be featured anymore

@Magisch Nah I just mean that a new post from SE is probably coming soon... which either means something new is gonna be posted or... well... ^

2:02 PM
always look on the bright side of life

@Spevacus eh, its been up there enough. People who are active would have seen it by now and most people like the CMs and certain Devs (esp. ones who were instrumental in showing Meta was much more important than SE thought) - so I don't see removing it being a "herald of doom"

@LinkBerest Naw what I meant was, typically this means a new post is coming, which means it'll quite possibly be featured, which means we get more cross-network traffic, which typically means... fun times :)

@Magisch there's even a sing along version :)
@Spevacus yeah, but in this case I think its just going to be the "results of staff engagement" one which seems meh as far as firestorms go

Mhmm

..... I could easily be wrong given the track record so I will not bet on this though :)

2:06 PM
@Spevacus ?

Rob
The track record, there's a video for that:

@Ollie ohh... well we get tons of those... ;)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Just curious what the latest post will be is all ;D

@Spevacus you mean new featured post?

nvm I should learn to search first ;)

;)
I was about to say, I just looked! ;D

@Mithical the next article title is for me 11 Of The Best Grilling Tools. Appropriate.

2:17 PM
@rene Same here. We watch the same kind of stuff online, apparently :P

No, you should stop reading the stuff from my monitor ...

@rene Mine is "The Best Pillows For Neck Pain, According To Glowing Online Reviews." I don't have neck pain, but... maybe this knows something I don't?

:D

posture check

I looked at it through view-source because it was telling me to disable my adblocker and that wasn't going to happen.

2:19 PM
@Spevacus maybe because you are a pain ... wait ... no ... nvm ....carry on ...

Rob
Forbes says the company is now valued at over U$1/2B and the 85M is going towards expanding Teams.

@rene ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's possible.

found no evidence :)

> GIC investor Ethel Chen will join the startup’s board alongside Chandrasekar who is gaining the director seat after joining as chief executive in October 2019.
Wait, so what about Joel?

probably stepping down

2:21 PM
Or they are adding seats

More seats would probably mean most of that 85 million would go to that extra seat, right?

yep, if one has enough money one can always buy a seat in a company
(ask Dell they made that mistake and had to fight for years to regain control - and had some really bad computers come out during that time)

Oh how nice it'd be to be a capricious multibillionaire
don't like ads on a website? buy the company and turn the ads off

I'd say we could start a gofundme or something but group funding (even when massive) lacks so much direction that it usually is rendered ineffective

@InfiniteRecursion oi

positive for who

@InfiniteRecursion flowering ;)

@Magisch What's my prize? I got a full card ;)

@Magisch There's also no link to a Meta discussion so I think he/others have realized they're just pouring gas over the fire (with just that title alone) so didn't want to link
- I take back what I said about your earlier reaction at the un-featuring: your crystal ball is better than mine

@Tinkeringbell a bar of chocolate with "actualizing synergies while leveraging AI" carved into it

2:30 PM
Nah, i'm sure there will be a meta post in short order

@LinkBerest Is it calamity time?

@Magisch :( Carved into it? That means less chocolate. Couldn't you just have printed it on the wrapper?

I always wonder about that

@Spevacus I don't see anything that needs cleansing fire yet?

what stops you from simply purchasing as much chocolate as you require?

2:30 PM
@Magisch Morbid obesity.

@Tinkeringbell Keep the flamethrower prepared ;)
@Tinkeringbell :(

@Spevacus Will do! :)

I once thought to myself "I should eat a full cake" and then I did it and then I realized why parents tell you not to

@Spevacus 's okay :) If my mom isn't nagging about it, it's not too hard to live with ;)
@Magisch Hahaha oh, I've been there too.. with a mega bag of M&Ms.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask That's tough, all the best for the remaining 5 days. I am safe and sane - working from home since March...

2:33 PM
@Spevacus yeah, I figure even if that blog post ends up flawless any meta post will have to include one answer which is entirely emojis just to point out how annoying that feature was

@InfiniteRecursion Where's my manners... Hi! I don't think we've met before, I'm Tink. :D It seems it's appropriate to say 'welcome back' to you :)

@rene then pls change the blur flower

@LinkBerest 🙏

then that answer will be deleted as not on topic (it isn't so that would be valid but.......)

Does anyone know what Series E funding actually is? Is it just a 'number' for the funding rounds? I see the previous one referred to as Series D?

2:34 PM
@InfiniteRecursion I lack the focus to do that ...
3

@Magisch hiya...yes...a really long time...I am still curious how the wizard could ping me

@Tinkeringbell In startups - Series E is suppose to be the final "round" of funding
i.e. after this your a business and don't need outside funding

@InfiniteRecursion The master of pings @Sha will not be stopped. Not even by technical limitations.

@rene I am so tempted to pin that

@LinkBerest 🙏

2:36 PM
@InfiniteRecursion I bet you are :D ... you have the power and I'm not going to contest that :D

note: that's more by tradition than by truth (you can have Series Z funding for all that it matters - as long as you can keep finding people to invest - though by that point you might want to seriously consider non-profit course)

@Tinkeringbell Hi... I know you Tink, and thank you :)

Which SE rejected a long time ago.....
break time - adios all

Just more lumping the whole of the community into one basket

@ShadowWizardWearingMask how does it work? Are all old users pingable or just the lazy ROs who disappear?

2:41 PM
@LinkBerest Enjoy the break! :)
@InfiniteRecursion Shadow just replied to one of your very old messages: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/6136436#6136436

> We’ll be opening CM roles, a second PM role on the Public Platform team, as well as additional developers and designers to help support the things we need to build.
good luck

Goooooooood luuuuck

@Tinkeringbell Thanks, @Sha that shows how bored you are in your quarantine :D

Sheesh

after Shog and Robert? I'm skeptical

2:45 PM
@Mithical Yeah. I don't think many people are jumping up and down for a job that can...basically fire at will?

What even is job security.

@Spevacus Well I like mine. It's not really secure but working for a company that sends you to clients means you always have your paycheck, even if the client decides they no longer have a project for you and you'll need to find another company client to work for ;)

I like how the blog post constantly flipped back and forth between teams and QA stats, as if trying to conflate the two as one "success", one being proof that the other is worth investing in.

I must admit I lost track after a few sentences. Perhaps I'll try again to read the whole thing tonight.
It seems Sara is using the funding post instead of the Sandbox to try out Markdown ;)

gotta learn somehow :D

protip
use the help
I do, even after a decade of active use ;)
however, if someone uses old-se markdown instead of commonmark... they get a pass

@Aibobot Do your edits apply immediately, or do they need to be reviewed?

@AnnZen He frequently uses that account to suggest edits instead of instantly apply them. So they do need to be reviewed, yeah :)
Well... "frequently" isn't the best word.
Occasionally, maybe.

how come @Aibobot has a post with 255 upvotes, and yet low rep?

Bounties.

The cost of poetry. :)

(which I think can be awarded now, @Aibobot)

just got into work :D
@AnnZen aibobot was supposed to be a low rep alt account
or one for doing things that I can't/won't as a mod
@Mithical simona right?

aye

Q: Not able to toggle back upvote downvote count

TheLittleNarutoI was browsing my questions and happened to notice that when we click on upvote count, it shows upvote and downvote counts separately, but there is no way to toggle it back. An image for reference: Only way I could toggle back is refreshing whole page. Is it a bug?

Should be migrated to MSE?

Looks like a halfway decent feature request. Not a bug.
But uh... yeah, applies cross-network, so sure.

nothing wrong with leaving it on the per-site-meta

Either way works.
I guess err on the side of not migrating, right?

i don't like the idea of migrating to main meta
because you're moving something from somewhere where the points are made up and don't matter anyway to somewhere where they can be hit with a bunch of negative rep

meh :D
you can't undo votes without an edit, no?

3:17 PM
Burn it to ashes ^

3:27 PM
It's gone :)

Cheers :)

Huh... lotsa insta-downvotes on the CEO blog meta post.

@Mithical done

(thumbs up)

as they say "next better player"
@Mithical one person I guess \o/

Yeah one or two people just swept through and insta-dv'd the new answers.

....is oneboxing broken
nope, the comment was just deleted

@Pandya on MSE a dupe exists: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/236767/…

@rene Thanks for finding it :)

Sorry it took so long ... :/
it wasn't easy to find

3:44 PM
Yes, I had tried searching on MSE before posting message here.

I did know it had an awesome answer from Shog9 ...
Not disappointed about that

@rene Haha. it is already mentioned in the question body that refreshing is a quick workaround.

Yeah, I guess that will be the final answer

An hour after someone says this ...
Against common sense, Stack Exchange is a small company, and with very low profit. It has no money to waste. — Shadow Wizard Wearing Mask 3 hours ago

:D
I don't think the new funding will go into the mobile app still

Rob
True, but a 100K would be enough to rewrite from scratch, not that I'm suggesting to do that; just that they aren't broke, or small.
My browser styled view is OK for me, and I have enough APPs; I think it (having an APP) started at the same time as the "There's an APP for that" saying started. Lucky they didn't put out a CD too.

@Rob main use of the app for me is mobile notifications

The only thing I'd want from an app is my notifications back. I still have the old app and get notifications, but clicking on them goes nowhere.
If that ever goes away, I'd miss it dearly even though it barely works as it is. As a mod, being able to get notified when I'm pinged has definitely helped in timely responses to things that needed them.

Rob
4:00 PM
My phone gets dings from chat, and isn't there a settling to email Notifications (resulting in a boing from your phone)?

actually have a (really poor) FR for doing mobile notifications another way

@Rob hmmmm maybe?

But dings in chat would only come if I had it open and sound on.

(there's a lot of tiny details that having a single app does better but...)

Rob
4:03 PM
If there was a Feature Request on Meta asking for a different ding for site notifications (with a 🔊 to adjust it) you'd be all set. :)

@Rob a web push notification works even when the browser isn't open

Is it that each site has a different sound for chat pings?

Each server does.
Not sure about Chat.SO actually.

@Rubiksmoose Yep, SO has a simple "ding"

Rob
@JourneymanGeek If you were willing to give SE your mobile number you could get SMSs, like Google sends me.

4:06 PM
there's no need to :D

Rob
Just use the broken APP.

I do at the moment
until its too broken to even app

Rob
In 6-8 weeks ...

@InfiniteRecursion thanks, and glad you're OK! :-)
What you work at? @Inf

@AnnZen IIRC You can even personalize which sound to use, I just can't find where now.

4:09 PM
@InfiniteRecursion everyone! None can escape my ping skillz. :D
(boring stuff: replying to any message, regardless of its age, will ping its author. :))

Rob
^^ Sha uses the Bronx Cheer Notification sound.

@Spevacus very true! :P

Mine is Star Trek doorbell here. Is that different from anyone else's?

@Rob how you know?!
;)

Rob
Probably. I use the Dolby Atmos shimmering sound.

4:13 PM
@InfiniteRecursion well, I am, but your ping was result of someone else asking something, let's see who it was....

I remember having a user script once to personalize the ping sound. I used to use the Sledgehammer flute intro. That was so chilling ;-)

Rob
Since my phone has Atmos it works pretty good.

It's @Meta fault!

@Rubiksmoose It's g3rv4's fault.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Citi never sleeps

The public community is important as it's central to all of our lives. There may be a more impactful company answer to that, and for that I will defer to others. However, Stack Overflow changed my life, and the lives of every coder I know. I imagine there are many people here who have a similar Stack Exchange story. I've been in countless meetings where ideas are shut down because though they would make money, they would sacrifice the integrity of the community. I think that's a really neat thing about working here. — Sara Chipps ♦ 27 mins ago

@ShadowWizardWearingMask @Meta never forgets

Rob
LOL

i'd have to see it to believe it
we rarely ever get any additional tooling or features to help with the onslaught of duplicates asked every day. it simply gets worse as the dupe question search becomes more and more useless, further and further clouded by the countless answered help desk question. Yea, it's great that people can come here to help. it sucks that the only way people can get help here is to ask, rather than being able to find the answer.

Rob

@DavidPostill No such command 'why'.

@MetaAndrewT. thanks

@DavidPostill no prob!

It’s been said a thousand times before, but I suppose it will take a thousand and one: SO is not designed and poorly accommodates those who are trying to learn from the ground up. Those people don’t need Q&A, they need courses, professors, tutors, peers, textbooks, tutorials, blogs, how-tos, videos, manuals... they need way way more than Q&A can give them. There is no way for a site the size of SO to provide personal tutoring to the giant influx of new programmers every year, week, day. SO is for masters to train journeymen; apprentices need long practice at the basics before SO will be useful — Dan Bron 1 hour ago

Teaches @Journeyman

@M.A.R. Ah yes, the old 'I'm teaching myself but expecting a free online internet teacher!'

5:16 PM
@M.A.R. hahaha

@M.A.R. though arguably, one also needs to teach onceself to ask questions well

@JourneymanGeek That's not difficult to learn How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

@DavidPostill well but is it?
You can take a horse to a library but you can't make him read

Indeed, but there is a limit on how much we should spoon feed novices. There is also Writing the perfect question | Jon Skeet's coding blog which is linked in SO help at the bottom of How do I ask a good question? - Help Center - Stack Overflow.

If people can't be arsed to read then they shouldn't be arsed to post ... :)

@JourneymanGeek Well, I've said it before... you can't have everyone participate here and you shouldn't want to. The site is in English (and there's a few other languages but) which still rules out a significant portion of people.

5:30 PM
its still difficult, but worth it
and sometimes you have the privilege of experiences
but saying it isn't difficult is incorrect

Rob
👴Back in my day we had no Internet, no one to ask, and if we weren't writing it in BASIC we were proficient at Assembly Language (knew all the opcodes). A few thousand dollars bought a computer with less CPU power than an Android wristwatch. --- If they had to answer a few questions before they could ask one all the abandoned questions and accounts would dry up; it would probably provide a lesson in what makes for a good question too. But, that's already been rejected.

@Rob You're that old?
Oof.

What does oof mean?

Oof

@rene Oef for you ;)

Oh semi-jinx

@rene You're that old too?! Oof...

@Tinkeringbell It seems you did though!

We are surrounded by the elderly.

Where is that post on mod abuse?

@rene search for 'recourse privileges'
Should be the top one then.

5:45 PM
yep, thanks!

Q: Could we please be a bit nicer to new users?

Chris UpchurchThere is a distinct decline in the level of civility on all the sites here. Some of this is due to new users coming in and posting spam and other nonsense, but the off-topic and downvote buttons are doing a pretty good job of keeping this under control. Unfortunately, a lot of this is coming ...

@Spevacus It's really starting to feel more like a nursing home in here than a Tavern, that's true!

Even if they're oofs

@M.A.R. That's for new ones, not old ones :P

@Rob I'm an old fart too. Back in my day you could buy the Sinclair ZX81 for UKP 50.

I'm an old fart too. Ice cream used to be only 500 tomans.

And yes, I taught myself assembler on that.

A moderator discredited me in public ... they probably claim they stated the truth ...

The ZX81 is a home computer that was produced by Sinclair Research and manufactured in Dundee, Scotland, by Timex Corporation. It was launched in the United Kingdom in March 1981 as the successor to Sinclair's ZX80 and designed to be a low-cost introduction to home computing for the general public. It was hugely successful; more than 1.5 million units were sold. In the United States it was initially sold as the ZX-81 under license by Timex. Timex later produced its own versions of the ZX81: the Timex Sinclair 1000 and Timex Sinclair 1500. Unauthorized ZX81 clones were produced in several countries...

@Rob UR WSTED ON DE YANG

I started on a Nokia 1100

@DavidPostill Interestingly, back then, Commodore offered a $100 discount on their computers to people who traded in any other home computer, so people realized they could buy the Sinclair for $50 and get a net $50 discount on the C64
