2:48 AM
Morning, I guess...

3 hours later…
5:39 AM
@Mithical Yep. Morning :)

6:05 AM
morning?

either you haven't had coffee yet or the position of the sun is confusing you? ;)

Both are true.

6:28 AM
@Tinkeringbell or maybe @rene is locked inside a dark room...
@Mithical why so early again??
Hmm... weird. Anyone have any idea why the video in this answer is stuck in the "processing" mode? It happened to me too few times with random vids that I tried to upload. Does YouTube really suck that much, as that user said before leaving, or is there something wrong with the video itself?
I never bothered to dig into it, just re-uploaded the vids until it worked.
spammers listen! I just posted about video.... x_X

6:52 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask If I have to guess: they didn't intend to upload a video. Nothing is processing. You're being trolled.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask What @rene said makes sense. If you start uploading a video but then close out of it while it's still uploading, it will permanently show as "processing". (Links to videos are created upon beginning the upload, not when it's done, and there are even some videos that take advantage of this to "know" their ID "before" they're uploaded.)

TIL; I thought it was a case of knowing how the IDs are generated.

7:21 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Woke up, couldn't fall back asleep

Pro-tip: have some caffeine about now

I went back to bed at around 7
(having been awake since 4:30)

7:34 AM
@Mithical sorry to hear.... what makes your sleep so troubled?
@rene well it happened to me also in the past, without closing the upload dialog... and the comment by the author looks sincere.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask sure. Let's say their attempt was successful

7:51 AM
@rene hey, usually I'm the one who don't trust people and assume everyone are trolling!
:P

@ShadowWizardWearingMask no idea

@Mithical no dark thoughts or anything like that? Just... no sleep?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask right

I hear that a lot that people just can't sleep despite being tired. I'm so lucky I never had that issue, it sounds awful

I can usually fall asleep in the first place okay, it's staying asleep that I have trouble with.

8:07 AM
I usually half wake up between REM cycles, turn and then go back to sleep instantly

@ShadowWizardWearingMask don't let your shields down ;)

8:38 AM
@Magisch So I'm normal?
Ever since the operation, I haven't been able to sleep more than three hours straight without waking up
rene of the day:
It looks like you are trying to ask a question in Portuguese. Nope, that is what my C++ normally looks like ... — rene 24 hours ago
Maybe we're both abnormal
I think I could have used a third hand better. Instead I'm stick with a third urine filter.

9:04 AM
@Mithical more accurate you have trouble getting back to sleep after waking up, I'm pretty sure I also wake up at least twice during my four hours sleep, but just fall asleep again quickly, without really remembering being awake.
Anyway, if this keeps going on, and cause you actual trouble... maybe a doctor can help?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I read somewhere that it's normal to be briefly but not fully awake after a REM cycle and before another one (one is ~1.5h give or take). My personal experience bears it out. Sometimes I remember being awake briefly, sometimes not.

Also, when son wakes up in 6 AM he might make noises that wake me up, but I manage to sleep again until 7 or so, but that's a difference case.
@Magisch yes, exactly.
So during those cycles, we dream?
hmm... is R.E.M band called after those REM cycles??
checking

I dont know that much about it
but REM cycles are where the productive sleep happens, e.g completing a REM cycle is the primary way sleep functions for recovery and rest.
most people with sleep problems or deprivation have something that interrupts or lowers the quality of their REM sleep

No...
> however, sleep researcher Dr. Rafael Pelayo reports that when his colleague Dr. William Dement, the sleep scientist who coined the term REM, reached out to the band, Dr. Dement was told that the band was named "not after REM sleep"
LOL
> After considering names such as Cans of Piss, Negro Eyes, and Twisted Kites,[9] the band settled on "R.E.M."
@M.A.R ^
Too bad they ditched the CoP name....

sounds cool until you see it on a billboard I guess ...

9:10 AM
@Magisch yeah, like @djsmiley :(
Mar 5 at 8:47, by djsmiley2k TMW
Basically, I never got to REM
@rene meh, I would like it a lot. :D

Personally when something wakes me in the middle of deep sleep it's definitely a much different experience then being woken up normally

Bet people would send them such cans.... :-P
@Magisch yeah, bad experience, for sure. :/
Like...
robbing @Rob
oh hey Smokey

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Hello.

:) congratulations on the new 'job' :)

9:33 AM
@Tinkeringbell Basically the only difference is I get to see the sekrit chat rooms now :P

Hahaha that's always a big positive thing :)

9:57 AM
@Mithical spicy

@Magisch Are you going to try to become important enough for sekrit access there? Or has SE demotivated you entirely? ;)

10:43 AM
@Tinkeringbell Im not feeling doing anything useful with my free time atm
well, not generally useful. I work out more and play more games

Heh. It's about the same here, so I won't judge ;)
I do feel both are 'useful' in a sense that they've given me a level-headedness I haven't experienced in a long while, perhaps due to the absence of travelling to and from work... I have a better, more regular day-to-day rhythm now that seems to be doing a lot for my capacity to think.

So Tink can Think better now. Nice!

11:02 AM
@Tinkeringbell Tink thinks tink can think better

@Magisch Yep! :)
Though the comment thread on my latest merge request may lead people to believe otherwise ;)

?
Health.SE just got bunch of edits.... surprised people still roam that site.

11:46 AM
but can't flag, no idea where to click.

<kbd>m</kbd> <kbd>f</kbd> <kbd>1</kbd> <kbd>enter</kbd> :P

?
mf1
Nothing happened.
:(
:D

those are the keyboard shortcuts for flagging a post as spam

I don't use keyboard shortcuts...
Also, why those letters? Random?

m > moderation, f > flag, 1 > first option

11:49 AM
ohh
Smart
+1 to whoever built it this way then. Nick? ;)

I don't need to read Japanese to be able to flag as spam; I just need to use the keyboard
@ShadowWizardWearingMask balpha I think

@balpha!
This reminds me, @Bart is still pingable!
How can I lure him to stay?

@Mithical Google translates the page, so I know which one to hit to press 'flag' (they call it report). Then spam is indeed always the top one ;)

I know! Liquorice!
For you, @Bart ^

:vomit:

11:52 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask just call DROP!! and he will be in

May 8 '14 at 20:44, by Bart
Liquorice! God I miss that stuff ... good thing though. I'd eat it by the bag full.
Taste should not change over time.... right? ;)

@rene You missed a chance... I'm sure Bart will drop by for licorice though ;)

DROP!!
No, it's not working. @rene

it takes 6 to 8

11:54 AM
Perhaps add a stroopwafel to the bait pile too ;)

Nah this will already be too much for him
Also, prefer to have him in healthy shape. :P
If he'll become too big he'll be blurry.

I don't think @rene has a problem with people being blurry

@Tinkeringbell oh, that is a good trick

I'm full of good tricks! :)

worries

12:03 PM
@Mithical being blurry doesn't mean @rene likes blurry things. :D
@Tinkeringbell not feathers?!
:D

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I'm not a stuffed animal, so no :P

looking inside @Tink
OK, you're fine.
So now I know where [name of long gone user] has been gone into.... :D

Sometimes, you make me worry about your sanity.

Only sometimes?

12:05 PM
Hey, he can talk sense if it the topic is chocolate ;)

Food, in general.

Ehhh, let's stick with just chocolate for now.
I remember that ice cream in your coffee...

yummy
Think @Mith knows me the best around here.

doubt it

Let's test it.... What's my favorite color? @Mith
In the meanwhile... LOL
It's graph from SEDE about how effective a bounty is, the more points you spend on it...

12:14 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Blue.

(aka the "size" of bounty)
@Mithical correct!

But I didn't know that offhand, I'm just good at stalking.

How did you find?

lol too easy then...

12:16 PM
Took about five seconds? :P

Rob
12:51 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask All y'all talk about sleep put me to sleep, but I'm 1/2 awake now; and lurking if you can see me:

@Rob too easy, even Google knows it's a Cat picture. lol

Rob
Jun 24 at 15:09, by Shadow Wizard Wearing Mask
@Rob let me guess, Google Image Search? That's cheating. :D
I could be in one of the photos, or standing in the store window.

@Rob I never said I don't cheat. :D

Rob

Googly EYE!

Rob
1:03 PM
You have a Googley eye!

lol
Looks like a bowl actually.

Rob
It's the emperor's bowl.

At least not bowel.

a superb owl
Another great thing about a catcus is it can never be killed by birds of prey
they can not lift the catcus, it has needles

@Magisch they can drop stones on it.

Rob
1:09 PM
Sort of, the Imperial Bowl Checker checks the bowl to determine the emperor's health.

Crows drop nuts to the road to have the cars smash them open... so surely they can also think of eliminating threats with stones. ;)
@Rob it's too flat, it only check how full the bowl is.

Rob
or give them the Seagull Shower!

The catcus will persevere

@Magi do you have fruit?
hoping that didn't show any private parts

1:16 PM
The fruit is in the flowers
and I have flowers behind the ears

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Closer to this, but with a dozen seagulls hanging on an updraft over one location.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask The deets.

1:32 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask If I remember correctly, that is the private parts
Flagged

Rob
1:49 PM

Is that a frog?

Rob
A potatoad.

potatoad, potoadto...

Rob
You say "potatoed", and I say "potatoad" ...

@Tinkeringbell Rob wins this round. Sorry.

Rob
1:53 PM
either way, it's a dirty pic!

@JohnDvorak I know. I'm horrible at humor.
@Rob Did not :P
@Rob That it is.

A question on Stack Overflow’s Software Engineering site caught our attention recently. It tries to come to terms with the impact of scrum on developers’ ability to do a great job. The claim is a bold one: Scrum is turning good developers into average ones. Could that be true?

Rob
1:56 PM
Hay!

@Rob upper half of a big creature's mattress?

@Rob sneeze

Or maybe it's a land blimp?

It is the turtle-truck's shell

Rob
I wonder how they loaded it

1:58 PM
very carefully

Imagine trying to turn a corner with this thing and it disintegrating in the middle of a busy highway.

I suspect with a forklift or two

@Rob More like carrotoad judging by those leaves...
(at least if the potatoes/carrots I've grown in the past are any indication)

Rob
True, but there's fewer punots for that.

This thing looks like it could disintegrate into a loose pile of dried plant corpses and a big sheet at the slightest provocation.
^ definitely a potato

2:17 PM
Tomato + Potato = ?

2:40 PM
Long time no granola... I missed it!
It's not cheap, so I don't buy it often. ($6 for 400g)

since potato = earth apple in French, and tomato = paradise apple in Czech, potato + tomato = edento?

Rob
Pomato

@JohnDvorak huh, nice! +5

Fine. You win again.

@Rob why not Mopato?
@JohnDvorak wow, @Rob is on a strike!

Rob
2:43 PM
Where is the M derived from with a potato and tomato portmanteau ?

@JohnDvorak Really? Haha, this is interesting
Potato = Earth apple also in Persian
@Rob Because cool words need to have an M.

Rob
That's just moolish!

@Rob pomme = apple in French

@M.A.R. in Hebrew too, it's actually even more direct: it's two words, meaning literally Earth Apple.
תפוח אדמה where תפוח is apple and אדמה is earth.

Well, it's more likely for the Persians to have adapted it from the French

2:46 PM
Can't be more direct than that. ;)

Same in French - Pomme de Terre = apple of earth

@M.A.R. not Hebrew? :D

Or maybe it was a French Jew! The plot thickens?

lol
Actually Jew doesn't mean Hebrew.

Siib Zamini
Siib = Apple

2:47 PM
Jewish people in the past did not talk Hebrew.

Zamin = Earth

Rob
It's all pootata when it's finished

Zamini = from Earth, it's an adjective

@Rob careful, "poota" is a curse in some language....

@Rob I was imagining tasting delicious french fries and you just ruined it.

2:48 PM
Spanish, perhaps?

is Persian a PIE descendant?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Spanish
@JohnDvorak We're like the grandfather

of proto-Indo-European?

@M.A.R. well, not so complicated in Hebrew. ;)

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask You spell poorly, pu

2:49 PM
> Proto-Indo-Iranian was a satem language, likely removed less than a millennium from its ancestor, the late Proto-Indo-European language, and in turn removed less than a millennium from the Vedic Sanskrit of the Rigveda, its descendant.

@Rob I know, don't want parrots and dogs all over me. :P

We pwn PIE noobs

(or just RO moving it all to trash)

Shh, you'll wake him up

glaring behind shoulder at @Mith
ping ding

Rob
2:50 PM

D'oh! Homer's voice

@Rob They don't look like french fries

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Bah!

2:51 PM
I have a sheep at my desk for..... 15 years now.
She's orange.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask -_-

Pretty sure I posted pic long ago.
@Mithical hello to you too!
:D

Rob
Did it eat the duck?

Pinging annoys Mith. Writes it down

@Rob no, but it sometimes fall off the desk and get dust.
So by now it's quite dusty.

2:53 PM
I have no idea what you're referring to

Rob
Shear it.

And at some point it got patriotic.
@M.A.R. my orange sheep.
OK, put the SO cup in front of it, it fits.

I see @Journey's mysticism is contagious
Don't you I can be super incomprehensible if I want to?
Yes that's a threat

Your incomp is nothing compared to mine!
@Rob nah

2:56 PM
@M.A.R. Hatrack Ratcatcher Brickbat Lingerie.

Hat Rat Brick Ling... hmm.... code?
Rat breaks hat's lung?
OK, here is my sheep in its full orange glory.
Ready?
Set!
Go!

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask This was my guess:

A goatblet

@Rob close, but no cigar. ;)

Rob
Dominican?

3:06 PM
@Rob who? What? Lost you on that one...
oh, the cigar?

Rob
Y

I prefer Cuban.
If I would have smoked.
But I don't.
So feel free to hand it over to @M.A.R

Rob
The richest cigar rollers have money, and could afford to leave Cuba; settling in the Dominican Republic, where growing conditions are great - thus, the best cigars actually come from there, and not Cuba.

Rob
Rolling being the most highly skilled portion of the labor involved in cigar making.

3:11 PM
Why?

Who rolls? The rich person, or the servant/slave?

I mean, a machine could do it easily, couldn't it?

Rob
Otherwise they end up looking like that ^^^

Rob
@JohnDvorak First hit from fast search; but a quick read seems to indicate that the info is correct: northwoodshumidors.com/cigar-blog/…
There's a huge difference, including price; and rarity of people with over 40 years experience.

3:17 PM
Because you usually cough yourself to death before you hit 40 years of smoking experience?

Rob
@JohnDvorak They don't earn enough to smoke what they roll, and theft looses you a highly paid job.
I used to buy them when I was a teenager (able to because people thought you were buying them for someone else, not yourself). When you're paying 40-50 for approximately four cigarettes weight of tobacco it needs to be well rolled and good quality, no filler or glue.
Unfortunately, but good for my wallet, my tobacconist decided to go out of business; never did find another place with such good product at reasonable prices.
So I gave up cigars as I turned adult.

Good for your wallet and lungs

Rob
Still smoke cigarettes, but quitting; or trying somewhat successfully.

@Rob parents knew?
What made you start?

Rob
3:33 PM
Yes. Too much money and no car / house to pay for. Made more decades ago that the last few. Earned up front, poorer in my later years.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask One of the worst reasons, other people did. Also back then there wasn't as much info about the hazards of cigarettes; the govt was busy pushing that MJ is poisonous and causes insanity, etc.
Now govt sells MJ!

@Rob heh. Well, my friends also tried to pull me in, but I was able to resist because my father died from smoking. So far it even works with my own kids, I told them at young age that their grandfather died from smoking, so they now know that Smoking it very very risky. :)
Also, I was a total nerd... smoking didn't fit the image, so guess it was also a factor. lol
(friends who tried to pull me in were in different... circle.)
I was in several circles back in highschool, though naturally spent most time and efforts with those who were more like me.
Time for coffee-to-go and going home.... cya!

i had friends who smoked, but they never pushed it on anyone and were very respectful about it, going outside, not smoking around people who don't smoke, etc

Rob
Highschool was a lost cause for learning, for some people, I did OK; but I also went post-sec s few times; whilst others from highschool serve coffee or gas jockey.

i started having lung issues at 16, so at that point it wasn't even thought

Rob
Out of several thousand HS pupils only a handful became super rich and/or famous.
^^ Didn't miss much, and saved a fortune, and your lungs.

3:57 PM
@Rob A handful did?
Where did you live, Hollywood?

Rob
I don't give out my location, but it's not there; also people born there have a better success rate, it's the outsiders who go there seeking fame and fortune that make up the lower percentile.

Shrug obviously
It takes a special talent to ruin an inherited fortune down to cinders. Most people do OK

Rob
Pretty much everywhere (at least in North America) it's the people who are born in a small town and go to 'the big city' that get eaten up.

I guess that's a rule of life actually

@Glorfindel You might consider to reverse the order of duplication of this question since my answer covers all aspects (close voting and flagging). Finally you could mark both as duplicate of this one.

Rob
4:22 PM
@M.A.R. It's particularly hard on most people, to go from The Sticks (or even anywhere in NA), into the super high density; where nothing you can do stands out or sets you apart - it's a combination of luck, right place/time, talent, secret sauce, etc. Otherwise you're a blink in someone's eye. It's difficult to appreciate the huge difference in density:

2 hours later…
6:21 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ yeah, that makes sense

@Glorfindel Ty

How does Smoky decide what spam to report here?

6:36 PM
@DavidPostill Very simple and limited algos (just for the reasons stated)
E.g. those keywords are held in a blacklist.

@πάνταῥεῖ So a special blacklist for the tavern?

@DavidPostill No. It's controlled mainly in the Charcoal HQ (Metasmoke respectively). I don't know for sure which of smokey's messages make it in the tavern and why.

@πάνταῥεῖ Thanks. Was just curious.

Iirc, the ones that aren't handled within 5/10? minutes in CHQ

@DavidPostill anything that hasn't had feedback in 5 minutes

6:41 PM
@ArtOfCode Cheers

s/had feedback/wasn't deleted/
something like that

I suspected such but didn't know for sure.

and is not on SO

@DavidPostill some non-human-readable config in the rooms.yml controls that: github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/blob/master/rooms.yml#L378

7:01 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Ooooh, gimme gimme gimme

that worked ...

You better not disappoint me.

:D

7:22 PM
Wait, he went for the drop, not the stroopwafel?!

🚽

7:44 PM
@Tinkeringbell I'll take the stroopwafels :)
Fortunately for my tastebuds we can get something very similar in the UK (I can't tell the difference between them and the real ones I used to eat in NL).

@DavidPostill Those look real enough ;)
