@Rob hmm? 🤔
@Rob oh yeah. I voted for the Pirates.
The Pirate Party of Israel or Piratim (Hebrew: הַפִּירָאטִים) is a political party in Israel founded in 2012 by past members of Holocaust Survivors and Grown-Up Green Leaf Party and Ale Yarok to promote the values of the international Pirate Party movement. Party candidates gathered 2,076 votes in the 2013 Knesset elections (0.05%), 895 votes (0.02%) in the 2015 elections and 816 votes (0.02%) in the April 2019 Knesset elections. == References == == External links == Official website...
@Rob creepy crappy :D
@Rob not a bit, a lot. 37:33 and previous time it was something like 34:33 to Gantz.
@djsmiley2kTMW best alarm: wife. Really. Somehow enough she whispers my name and I'm up. And I don't wake from alarm clocks.
@Magisch those dry coughs are really nasty, can last for weeks... :(

depends. If it is black tea with lemon I consider it to be real tea

Rob

There are certainly different kinds, some less "tea" and more everything else. My comment was a retort to your "ew, coffee" comment; which @Sha and I think is the greatest drink.

M.A.R.I just noticed I can reply to a deleted message in chat, while this wasn't possible before, i.e. the reply function used to disappear when the message was deleted. @avazula Actual tea is OK, it's when it's ruined by DavidsTea with various spice and fruity flavours that it's no longer tea.

@Rob didn't know about that one.
I'm sick so I'm mostly drinking pectoral herbal tea now :(

Rob
You know if you go into a "tea" store and instead of having two dozen varieties they have two hundred flavors; then it's a "herb tea" store, and not really tea.

11:16 AM
@Rob meh, I got drunk from 6-8 shots of Grey Goose once
@avazula sorry to hear... what virus attacked you?
@Rob yeah these days most tea is mix of herbs more than actual tea.

@ShadowWizardisEarForYou No idea ... I might be a covid-19 victim ;)

@avazula hehe.... let's hope not.... well, you have fever?

My fever dropped so i'm better today. Sore throat, lung pain and headaches, and a constant mix of hot and cold. At least I'm not delusional anymore. Yesterday evening was fun.

so it's... v.possible

11:23 AM
@avazula Um. Please let me know if you are.
And get better! That sounds pretty unpleasant :(

@terdon haha, I will, don't worry ;) but there's no reason I'd be.

Rob
It's available in convenient bottles.

@avazula sounds like typical flu then... let's hope it's behind you and tomorrow you'll wake up as healthy as an ox.... ;)

@ShadowWizardisEarForYou I'm not feeling bad enough for it to be the flu. Sounds more like bronchitis to me.

uhm
Bronchitis is more serious than the flu :D

11:28 AM
Depends how you measure it, I guess?
Even common cold can be super annoying

I get bronchities more easily than the flu ;)

I had a 2 week long cough :D

Me too, many times.... it just comes and goes

I only got it once in my life... got a 40°C fever, could barely walk.

@avazula No reason at all. Seems incredibly unlikely. But, if by some horrible twist of fate you are, just let me know. Only because I will be visiting my parents relatively soon and my father is severely immunodepressed and should really not be exposed to even the slightest chance of getting it.

Rob
11:32 AM
Bronchitis doesn't involve having a fever; it might be pneumonia or the flu (or worse).

@avazula That... doesn't sound like the flu but something considerably stronger. "Flu" is just "la grippe".

proper flu is real nasty

@Rob doesn't sound that bad. I mean, I'm working right now, I wouldn't be able to do so if it was.

m,ost people just havea bad cold and think they have the flu.

@terdon I got diagnosed with the flu ... I don't like doctors but I try to trust them when I can :p

@Rob My words might have been a bit strong... I won't post a picture to prove you I'm fine but I am ;)
One thing to consider is that I've been travelling last weekend and spent 16 hours of my 3-days vacation in public transportation ... in a country where the weather is more moody than in mine (I'm not used to sudden drops of temperature :p)
So yeah, I was extremely tired yesterday. That doesn't help.

@terdon well.... don't want to sound paranoid... but it will eventually reach everyone. :/
From everything I can see, it passed the point of no return, too many are sick and spreading it all around the world.

it'll disappear/tail off over summer
then next winter, you better hope we've all got a vaccine, or immunity.
:/

@ShadowWizardisEarForYou ._.

@djsmiley2kTMW Only after major part of the population are exposed to it.

11:39 AM
Rest assured I'm taking any safety measures I can though. I'm working remotely today and will likely be for the rest of the week, I'm home alone and ready to call the emergency services if I get fever ... as our government advised us to do.

@ShadowWizardisEarForYou DUDE. BUMMER.

Not everyone who are exposed to it get sick.... not everyone who get sick dies, so it's NOT doomsday, not the end of the world.... but it's something we need to face.

So. Here's a few things
1) Its not that lethal.
2) Its not spread as much as say flu, which can also kill you

Sorry, was Spanish Flu, not that lethal?

3) Wash your hands. Seriously. Don't do a lady mcbeth of course.

11:41 AM
hahah

There was SARS, think it was more lethal, but contained better.

@djsmiley2kTMW Nipah. 97% lethal

Maybe the world has forgotten how to wash their hands...

@JourneymanGeek Lady who??

> In contrast, a 2007 analysis of medical journals from the period of the pandemic[15][16] found that the viral infection was no more aggressive than previous influenza strains. Instead, malnourishment, overcrowded medical camps and hospitals, and poor hygiene promoted bacterial superinfection. This superinfection killed most of the victims, typically after a somewhat prolonged death bed.[17][18]
@ShadowWizardisEarForYou then maybe they all deserve to get a bit ill...
@avazula this convo has been raging for days

> The second wave of the 1918 pandemic was much deadlier than the first. The first wave had resembled typical flu epidemics; those most at risk were the sick and elderly, while younger, healthier people recovered easily. By August, when the second wave began in France, Sierra Leone, and the United States,[88] the virus had mutated to a much deadlier form. October 1918 was the deadliest month of the whole pandemic.[89]

@ShadowWizardisEarForYou They're not. I was! A few of us met in London last week :)

@terdon so, who was there? How did you coordinate?

@ShadowWizardisEarForYou It was a mod meetup. I realized quite a few of us are based in or around London and suggested we go for a drink. Then, someone with actual organizational skills stepped in and set it up. There were about 10 of us who made it.

Oh wow, nice!
Who paid? SE? ;)

its called you dumb idiot student the sun will smack your freaking face to death kiddo maybe the sun doesnt need to smack you im here to smack you painfully idiot

12:53 PM
@PM2Ring already reported and black listed: metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/…
(two verified results)

@PM2Ring yeah, likewise - delete-vote, not worth a red flag

@ArtOfCode "dumb idiot student" is 1000% worth a red flag.
It's an abusive troll.

@terdon You? Pffff

Moooooooom, someone called me an idiot! :P

@ShadowWizardisEarForYou I know, I know

12:55 PM
Put another way: if I received red-flags on that as a moderator, I'd decline 'em

@avazula but... it's easiest! ;)

Sorry. I'm on my phone. :oops:

@Mithical can confirm, terdon is a real human

@ArtOfCode that's too bad. So what's your red line? Or won't you ever approve abusive red flag?

JAD
wait
how is that not rude/abusive?

12:56 PM
@ShadowWizardisEarForYou Excellent

@ShadowWizardisEarForYou Sure I will, just not on that

Personally if I'll flag such thing as abusive and flag will be declined, I'll contact SE.

It's pointless, but it's not worth getting the big guns out for, just delete and move on

(asking for a CM/staff to take a look and if they agree, override the mod)

JAD
@ArtOfCode point is, regular users might not have del-vote rights. Should they not flag crap like that?

12:58 PM
@ArtOfCode the goal of red flag is to delete. If you decline the flags it means you're OK with the post and deem it worthy for the site.

So... guess we'll agree to disagree, @Art.

'is bad' is a grey line sometimes
but there's nothing 'good' in that post.

There was also a threatening comment: lol idiot rater come here fight me your idiot fist vs my AK-47 MOTHERFREAKER

@Mithical I did say "some of us"!

12:59 PM
@ShadowWizardisEarForYou no, it's very much not. The point of a red flag is to point out exceptional bad behaviour that needs special action. Declining the flag just means I don't believe it does - I'd just delete it and move on, maybe suspend the user if they keep doing it

@ArtOfCode Ha! The disguise worked!

Damn!
@Mithical Okay, can confirm terdon pretends to be a real human

@ArtOfCode Yeah, the 2nd one doesn't seem bad in isolation, but in the context of their previous posts, it's pretty obvious that they aren't here to be a constructive member of the community. ;)

JAD
> A reasonable person would find this content inappropriate for respectful discourse.
the description of r/a in the flag dialog
@ArtOfCode where does this policy come from. Is there a meta link that explains this? Seems odd to me
oh wait a second.
I thought you guys were discussing the answer @PM2Ring quoted as being not worth a red flag

@JAD true we are
I just hope other mods and/or CM's will agree with me, but can't do much more. :)

JAD
1:08 PM
I think they meant this as not being with a red flag
which sounds more reasonable

I don't agree we should give trolls so much slack and give them chance to offend people.

JAD
still very much borderline though

@JAD oh. Well, that might be.
But what @PM2 quoted was totally offensive.

JAD
100%

It was. And I might have cast a red flag on it, to be honest. But Art's point is also valid: red flags carry penalties and it's often not worth applying the penalty for first time offenders. So you might choose to just delete instead.

JAD
1:11 PM
like I said, borderline

personally, I found the "threat" of violence (will smack your freaking face to death) more offensive than the "idiot".

JAD
uhuh

@terdon true
"I will end your life" does not contain offensive words, yet it's more offensive than "F*** you".

@ShadowWizardisEarForYou I DIDN"T DO IT IT WAS @MITH

@terdon Fair enough. I can del-vote questions on Astronomy, but not answers. So my only option there is to flag, and leave it up to the mods.

Pro-tip: don't drink mexican beer and cycle. In fact, don't drink Mexican beer period. In fact, if you can't get Czech beer, you're better off sipping fermented grape juice than whatever they call beer in the USA.

@Mithical awww, this place is much less fun now. I can't even endanger people any more?

@JohnDvorak Come now. In a world that includes Belgian and German beers, why would you go for Czech?

I was in the USA all weekend drinking beer
(*Canadian imports)

(we can pretend the American ones don't exist, although I have tried some pretty decent artesanal ones)

Plenty of experience. Never tried Belgian beer. Heard low of German beer.

4:32 PM
Belgian beer is great.
Abbey ale ftw.
Trappist beer is brewed by Trappist monks. Fourteen monasteries—six in Belgium, two in the Netherlands, and one each in Austria, Italy, England, France, Spain and the United States—currently produce Trappist beer as recognized by the International Trappist Association. In addition, the Authentic Trappist Product label is assigned to the beer products of twelve breweries. == History == The Catholic Trappist order originated in the Cistercian monastery of La Trappe, France. Various Cistercian congregations existed for many years, and by 1664 the Abbot of La Trappe felt that the Cistercians ...

@JohnDvorak Um. OK. I admit I wasn't particularly impressed by Czech beer, but I only spent a couple of days in Prague. Still, all I could find was lager and the odd pilsner, better than crappy ones like Heiniken or Carlsberg, but not particularly interesting either.
Is there a large artesanal beer movement or something? Would I not get the good stuff in a normal bar?

How on earth do I deal with this without leaving SO?

Move on to the next rude new user? There has to be more than that cycle -- it's unsustainable.

IMO the system should never use our names/likeness to present information to other users.
in other words, don't become a target
and you won't be targeted

That's... terrible advice.

6:38 PM
What is the alternative?

Try to fix things?

how.

No comments at all. I am experienced.
Don't argue.

how do you make people not be rude? you don't give them the opportunity to be
unfortunately, it's not just new users who are rude
people earn enough rep to comment even while being rude

Isn't that the same argument that people use about how women dress? "Well you wouldn't be a target ..."

6:41 PM
"well, you did have a "kick me" sign attached to your jacket"

@SterlingArcher I was about to dupe vote it: stackoverflow.com/questions/57186457 ...

Sure. but what does pushing against that argument solve? does claiming it's a stupid argument make people who feel that way act differently?

New users need to be held to the same standard, if not harder than established users. I'm not saying a high rep user should be able to get away with being rude, nobody should. But a new user comes, does not respect the rules, and bashes people who were nice and informative should suffer harshly as well.

ok, so, hold them to that standard
this user just was
but that didn't stop them from being rude to you

@SterlingArcher user has deleted both question and the account. Let's move on.

6:43 PM
@SterlingArcher What makes you think new users are treated differently? If you're rude, you will be suspended or your post deleted.
The point is that someone else being rude is no excuse for me to be rude. If I see rudeness, be it from a new user or an established one, I flag.

In the case of SO, except in extreme cases, there's no punishment that can be dished out that can't be gotten around by making another account or accessing from another location
All we can do is react to problems
we can't prevent them entirely

We can always be pro-active

The best case scenario for this case would have been you raising a flag with the first rude comment, and moving on
further engaging with someone like that doesn't make it better

@user400654 Suspensions are harder to get around, but what's the point of punishment anyway? New users don't care about the site, so we have no way of punishing them, as such. More importantly, why would we want to? If someone is rude, we just want them to i) stop being rude or ii) leave the site. Either one would do. I have no interest in also seeing them punished.

The point was, it's not a singular occurrence. I'm getting tired of being yelled at for following the rules, and I don't like "stepping back from SO" being the only valid answer

6:45 PM
@SterlingArcher No, just step back from that post.

I did, however, there's always the next post.

If that's also horrible, step back from that one too. There are what, a few thousand posts a day on SO?

that's not a solvable problem

If you can't ignore people being assholes on the internet, then you probably don't want to be involved in a site like this one. Sadly, the assholes come with the territory.
All we can do is learn to step away and ignore them once they've shown their colors.
And believe me, it's about 10 times harder to do as a mod when you see all the ugly.

If I step away, the "assholes" win. After nearly 9 years of curation, it's quite difficult to let that happen without a fight

6:49 PM
flag them.

@SterlingArcher Ah, no. That's the fallacy. Nobody "wins" here, it isn't that sort of game. And certainly nobody wins if the people who could answer their questions walk away.

the rude ones are the exception. let the mods deal with it

^^ this

I totally agree, and I have said that I flagged it. It's just the volume is overwhelming

I have gotten far, far more "OMG thank you so much!!!!" comments from new users than I have gotten rudeness.

6:50 PM
Solution: less answering, more closing

I'm just thinking outloud, but if a new user's post or comments get flagged, there should be steeper punishing. Higher standards for new users, instead of the coddling that didn't work

@SterlingArcher I get that. But that's just the way it is when we're dealing with a site the size of SO. Even if the rude ones are only 0.001%, that's still a lot in terms of actual numbers and it can indeed be very frustrating.
I have my calm, collected mod hat on now, but don't be fooled: I've gotten in as many pointless arguments with trolls as the next user.

I know I'm just ranting a smidge, it's been a tough couple of SO days in this regard for me

... or even 0.015% :grimacing:

@SterlingArcher Heh, no worries. And I'm in my "do as I say, not necessarily as I have consistently done" mode. :P

6:52 PM
just don't be unwelcoming /s

I only wish I'd always followed my own advice and walked away.

I believe I am note a rude person or commenter, but walking away is sometimes very hard.
You write up a very detailed, polite explanation on why the question needs editting etc etc, boom. I'm the jackass. It's infuriating lol
how dare you not welcome me [question about sample codes]

🚽

Seriously though, that really comes with the territory. If you can't learn to walk away, you will just get more and more frustrated.

I can walk away from 98% of my CVs. The ones that slight me, I genuinely feel like I need to take them down a peg for the audacity
(not literally)

6:57 PM
@SterlingArcher Sure. I am also not believing that for myself. Though I was banned for another year long suspension, just replying to a comment made from another user (not the OP).

@SterlingArcher Steeper punishment is pointless. A 1 rep newbie has literally nothing to lose. And I suspect that plenty of people who have no desire to become part of the community simply create a new account each time they want to ask a question. That's difficult to prove, although sometimes they blatantly admit it up front.

For example, when the user in question posted that link "why is stackoverflow so mean" after I explained.. oh boy did i flash red for a moment. But that's when I deleted my comment and walked and complained
I would like to see SE acknowledge the issue. I know it's a lot to ask, but just knowing that they support us in the fight would really go a long way for me.

Flag and move on ....
