12:00 AM
Basically, yes.

Not much. Just hanging out until my X3 download is finished.

:D

So I'm going to try and put together some sort of demo PHP script that will test the concept, I guess.
Essentially login is handled entirely by the server though, so I just need a token in the app, yes?

Do it in Node.js, just because you can and know that you want it.

I don't know node.js.

12:01 AM
I mean, if the site implements a typical cookie-based session, then if you're using some sort of HTTP library it will (most likely) handle that part for you.

I'm not sure if it does. I'm discussing several apps with clients, and I'm not sure which libraries I'll be using yet.

note: I have no idea what you guys are talking about, however Node.js is almost always the right answer.

I can use LRResty.

Happy new year, everybody! (If you're west of UTC, just imagine I'm from the future)

@balpha TIME TRAVELER!
Happy New Year :)
@OctavianDamiean I'm using node.js right now, so yes, yes it is.

12:03 AM
Oh yea, right. Happy New Year. :)

@balpha happy new year human from the future!

Q: Delete read messages

Cathy SternerI would like to be able to delete read messages I've already read. Like we do with e'mails. It's so hard to try to read all the messages when I go off the page to do things like farmville.

Ben is not human.

I can't decide if they've found their way here from Facebook or if that's an actual request for the network. :/

My apologies then.

12:03 AM
I suspect the former, but...

I'm fairly sure it's the former

has learned to write userscripts and is like a kid with his Lego bricks

Hahah

Also, anyone know how to circumvent the necessity of if/else/ad/infinitum blocks?
I'm building a menu that can handle several sets of options.
I have an "announcement type" and "subtype".

Write illogical code?

12:07 AM
@OctavianDamiean those things are awesome!

lol
I'm wondering if there's a way to generate the menu based on an XML file or something.
And if that's a bad idea.

No, not XML. JSON.

@OctavianDamiean This is for iOS, PLIST (an XML ... "thing") is lingua franca.

Oh, I see.

Yup, but someone recommended against an XML based menu. I seem to like the idea...
Data trees take the ad/infinitum out of if/else/ad/infinitum when displaying menus.

12:11 AM
It is a normal approach on Android.

So weird seeing '11 on dates on posts

Finding both parts of the joystick (the stick and the throttle) is epic win. Finding out that you need a damn connector for both parts to actually work is epic fail.

@OctavianDamiean :-(

This damn cable is in between me and a couple of amazing hours of X3: Terran Conflict. Grrr.

Hmm, now you have me tempted to play.

12:19 AM
My friend gifted me Terraria on Steam.
Is it worth a play?

I'm sure they do that on purpose. They probably think it is fun to search for a cable when the only thing you want to do is play.
Let me tell you something. IT ISN'T FUNNY!

No it is not.
My new favorite phrase:
if/else/ad/infinitum

12:59 AM
@TimStone - What happens if someone hijacks/guesses the token? What options are there to prevent that from happening?

Then they hijack the session. Use a secure connection, mostly.

Never worked with SSL on iOS before. Apple makes developers sign export documents as per US government regulation.
Is HostMonster decent?
Considering moving from GoDaddy.

1:15 AM
No idea

I can't find timezone settings for Stack. Is there nothing but UTC?

Everything on the network is done and displayed in terms of UTC, yes (except this chat, which uses your local timezone for the in-room view)

@TimStone Thanks. That's a bit confusing though.

Hi.

1:31 AM
It usually works out OK, since the site does its best to show you relative times unless whatever you're viewing happened more than a few days ago. The current UTC time is shown in the profile overlay if you need a quick point of reference.
@TinymooTim 'Ello
goes off to eat

1 hour later…
2:47 AM
Happy new year, all you Tavern folk.

@PopularDemand You too, enjoy!

3:09 AM
...Congratulations, Doris?

3:44 AM
lol
I'm going to sleep before the celebrants/celebrators/celebrators start screaming drunkenly thereby disturbing my ability to sleep.
On second thought, too late.
Good night and happy new year.

5:00 AM
Goodbye, 2011.

not yet not yet, hang on to it for another hour!!!

No, it needs to die.

good point.

:P

where the hell is 845 area code?

5:08 AM
New York, maybe?

who the hell do I know from 845?

shrugs

yeah me either

I need to remember to either make plans for holidays or stock up on beer, since this is rather unfun. That said, hooray for writing new code!

5:26 AM
hooray!

2 hours later…
7:26 AM
Area code 845 is a telephone area code which serves the Hudson Valley (New York) counties of Rockland, Putnam, Orange, most of Dutchess, Ulster, and Sullivan, plus parts of Delaware, Greene, and Columbia counties. 845 split from area code 914 on June 5, 2000; 914 was retained by Westchester County. Communities served by this area code *Airmont *Beacon *Blauvelt *Brewster *Carmel *Chestnut Ridge *Clarkstown *Cornwall *Cold Spring *Cottekill *Crawford *Dover Plains *Fishkill *Garrison *Goshen *Haverstraw *Highland *Hopewell Junction *Hyde Park *Kingston *Mahopac *Margaretville *Middletown *...
A winner is @TimStone, @jcolebrand.

@PopularDemand I spent a good many summers in the 845 area code.

6:46 PM
@balpha How did you make that?

Magic!

@balpha I meant, what software?

well, it's a Python program that creates the images, Audacity to edit the sound, mencoder to combine it all

nice.

7:07 PM
Hello.

Hi @Octavian! :D

Oh my god. Unicorntastic @balpha! :D

thanks :)

@Mana Mana's on Meta? Quickly, get out before you go insane like the rest of us!

7:21 PM
@TimStone I like to introduce new chatrooms into my favorites every once in a while, get a sense for the other communities on the website.

That video gives you a pretty good sense of what Meta's like.

@TimStone I felt a dark sense of despair from the purely black background of the animation. It intrigues me.

I suppose if you're going to become corrupt with mod power then it's only appropriate for you to become meta-corrupt as well.

Dude ... what black are you talking about? There are dancing unicorns with yet another awesome sax playing unicorn! Screw black backgrounds! :P

All you need is one nightmare where the unicorns stare into your soul and the sax is a distorted wail playing over your own screams. Just one.

7:35 PM
I see, you're one of us.

Sweet.

7:59 PM
@PopularDemand yes yes, he and I beat you to that long before ;-)

2 hours later…
9:45 PM
@TimStone someone asked this question earlier today.

9:58 PM
I'm wondering why chat polls the server instead of using something more realtime?

Because polling works well enough, is basically the reason.

@TimStone are you someone "in the know"?

...I suppose so, yes, in the sense that I know that's the answer given every time someone asks that question.

hmm, ok. (just asking as I'm rather new here)

A: Why is the Stack Exchange chat room using simple polling instead of other Comet techniques?

balphaThe answer is simple: Because it works. In the very beginning of the project "chat" we decided to start out with polling, because that's the easiest thing to implement. But we would do it in a way that allows for changing the transport from polling to long polling without too much hassle, should...

@Mana balpha is a dangerously crazy man.
Mwahahaha

;)

@balpha this just sounds like bragging

I'm probably not crazy enough to get hired as a Mafia sociopath, and too crazy to get hired has a diplomat to the U.N.

The perfect amount
