What does "unanswered" mean here? Zero answers, or does that include negatively-scored answers?

A: Turbocharging the Roomba: solutions for premature deletion

Shog9The following changes are live now: Deleted questions will be visible to their authors, regardless of those authors' reputation. They won't be linked to anywhere† that they're not already linked, but if someone knows where to find their question and it's been deleted, they should always be abl...

@JourneymanGeek Thanks!

@Stormblessed its a lot easier if you remember its called a roomba ;)

I've clicked on links before that redirect to the page for the user, how do those work?
Like https://scifi.stackexchange.com/users/edit/102999 but redirecting to the user's ID instead of 102999?
https://scifi.stackexchange.com/users/edit/ doesn't work

/users/edit/current

@MetaAndrewT. oh, thanks!!

@Stormblessed no prob :) note that some links don't work with /current though

A: Setting vanity profile names?

Journeyman GeekYou can set your username to whatever you want. I do! The issue with /user/username is usernames are not unique on SE and it would need a massive re-design of how we think of profiles. Your profile is actually linked to your userid (and in DB terms that's pretty much your primary key), and your ...

Wonder if it's LIFO or FIFO, since it's really really rare that a bug in that list is ever fixed, hard to tell. :/
!!/blame ever growing bug list

@ShaWiz It's ArtOfCode's fault.

meh

@ShaWiz just a new list of work for the same resources

4:18 PM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog I appreciated your comment on meta, to me about a question closed as a dupe within the last hour, and my concerns.

@JedrekMansfield Part of the reason why people are treating you as "new" may be due to your username change.
We tend to know people by name, rather than by user ID.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog That could be. I'm stuck with it for another week!

I'll be honest: your name, avatar, and writing style made me initially believe you were a sock puppet of a specific banned user, but after doing some digging I realized I'd interacted with you before but under a different username.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog So you know me as Namaste?

@JedrekMansfield Yes

4:25 PM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog In part, I was simply testing out "Manly Man's Field", (Jedrek apparently means "Manly"), compared to a more anonymous name like Namaste, and my almost 8 years straight as amWhy, on math.se, where I had disclosed a few times that I am a woman.
I still worry that woman aren't necessarily taken as seriously on STEM sites, but I'm encouraged by the SE staff, site mods, etc., that wear their (women's) names proudly.
@JedrekMansfield @SonictheAnonymousWizHog (All for the same account!, just username changes.)

@JedrekMansfield That is absolutely correct. I've volunteered at girls' schools to teach programming, and I've witnessed that firsthand (my students often complained to me that they're not taken as seriously in the home).
And yes, I've received my fair share of flack for doing so (as a male). It's difficult to be part of a movement which males are expected to be either neutral or against.

> "which males are expected to be either neutral or against"
uhhhhhh

@Mithrandir I've been called "gay" by my mom for wearing a "women in engineering" T-shirt.

that sounds supportive ...

That sounds like your mom has a problem, not that men in general are expected to be anti women in STEM.

4:35 PM
@Mithrandir Not just her. Others too have given me negative remarks like calling me "predatory" for volunteering at girls' schools.

....my brother volunteered at a girl's school for a year, and never got any comments like that.

Even Yvette agreed with me on Twitter (sadly she deleted her Twitter account so that tweet is gone)
@Mithrandir The American South is as a whole conservative-leaning.

That's the American South, not STEM or tech as a whole. While STEM/tech certainly has misogynistic issues, I very much disagree that it's something that men are expected be either neutral about or against.
(And I can't type. Welp.)
See: Jon Skeet, for example.

Shrug If its something you love, the hell with anyone who keeps you away from it ;)
2

We all have different cultural conditioning. At the event the aforementioned T-shirt was for, which was in the heart of Texas, there were almost no men volunteering.
@Aibobot You can say that about SE back in 2013/14, with me...

4:41 PM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Well, honestly....
You kinda were (are?) a bit difficult to deal with
3

stop generalizing.

@Aibobot Not to the site mods/users. To my family. In my answer where I come out as the "anonymous editor", I mentioned "family issues".

But I meant with stem and programming as a whole
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog My family dosen't get my love of computers
or the time I spend on the internet.
shrug

Mine didn't get my love of film photography.
Anyway...back to the original topic...

So you get older, move out, and do it anyway ;p

4:43 PM
@ShaWiz MANO? (Many In, Never Out)

As far as tech goes - a lot of voices are
"politics" as much as passion.
I don't like gender/race/anything else based gatekeeping

uhh... what happened with the stars?

hm?
Someone having a little too much fun
or too much agreement

Clearly one side of the argument is winning ;)

Are we having an arguement?
I'm not wearing my argument pants.

4:47 PM
We were having an agreement?

Discussion then ;)

@Aibobot I thought neither dogs nor robots wear pants...

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog That's kinda the joke

@KevinB I wasn't making a generalization when I wrote my personal concerns. I used STEM, but my own personal experiences in programming have been positive. Not so much, in terms of gender, in math, nor in philosophy. But that's not to say that every woman has the same experience. I'm not as young as many are likely here in this chat.

:7819836 Well those are personal concerns, shaped by the unique set of experiences you had.

4:49 PM
^ That's correct

On the other hand
sexism (I can't spell the M word at 1am in the morning) can be an actual problem
though how it is can depend a lot on the people involved.

@Aibobot Yep! Especially among females ;)

@Tinkeringbell or anyone lol

@Aibobot Exactly. I was not claiming any universal condition. I was merely testing, via shifts in my username, how my experience might vary.

@JedrekMansfield which folks have done before.

4:51 PM
@Tinkeringbell Now that's sexist.

@JedrekMansfield also slightly in jest

@Aibobot lol... No problem!

@JedrekMansfield Kinda the point of the joke. And my personal experience, the amount of times I got a 'because you're female's from other females is staggering
Most people in here know that, so I thought it didn't need explaining and would be understood as a joke. I'm sorry if it missed it's mark

(that said, I'm an south asian male - that's literally the other sterotypical techie sort)

I chuck in the tickle

4:53 PM
@Tinkeringbell Oh, yeah. I can relate to that, big-time!
@Tinkeringbell I pretty much figured, but wasn't sure.

@JedrekMansfield Anyhow, with regards to that I'd be careful with your results. Namaste/amWhy built up a certain... reputation ... And any perceived change might just be because that association with that reputation is gone.

@Tinkeringbell Very true. My username "Jedrek Mansfield" was only meant to be temporary, because most people seemed to know it was still "me"... it was in part me just being "facetious".

Most SE users are trained to recognize someone whose changing their username... or use NH's script...

@MetaAndrewT. ...which sadly has been taken down

@MetaAndrewT. Or the mod tools :P

5:02 PM
@MetaAndrewT. It's funny, because I went seven years without changing my original username: amWhy. In 2018, it was just for fun: amWhat, or amHow. But changed back within a week. (Surprising I was able to do that.) In 2019, I went with Namaste (I've always loved that word), and only this month, Jedrek which I still fail to connect with me!

@JedrekMansfield The 30-day rate limit wasn't implemented until late 2011 or possibly 2012 (i.e. very late in the Jeff era).

@JedrekMansfield if memory serves, there's workarounds

@Tinkeringbell the "... reputation ..." you refer to, given the elipses, is not entirely, nor mostly, correct. If you insist on regular references in chat to my " ... reputation ..." in that way, I'll have a problem, because much of it is based on false premises and erroneous conclusions. As a mod or community mod, you should know better than to "inadvertently" or "intentionally" reveal matters, sarcastically or directly, that are not relevant in the context. You know very little about me.
@Aibobot Yeah... I should look into those workarounds, because as of now, I can't revert my username until July 28th. :-(

@JedrekMansfield what do you want it to be?

@Aibobot I'd like to go back to "Namaste".

5:15 PM
@JedrekMansfield just here or network wide?

@Aibobot Network wide.

Might take a moment to show up
Caching

@Aibobot Yay!!! I'll check it out!!

We mods can do it as a one off, if you ask nicely ;)
Looks like it took
unless I messed up monumentally

@Aibobot Indeed! Thank you!

5:52 PM
There is sockpuppet upvote detection right?

@Mgetz Yes
Whether there is an automatic reporting mechanism is undisclosed, but there is a manual way for mods to check voting patterns

Ok then I swear sometimes we have roving bands of people that upvote questions for no reason other than they have downvotes

they're called "new users"

that is welcoming ...

@rene that to me?

5:57 PM
@Mgetz no, certainly not
@Mgetz I'm told on reddit they organize this and for sure on private slacks.

@KevinB I have no idea who or what is doing it. I'm not making any assumptions, I was just validating a question asked elsewhere as I was fairly sure that sort of thing was blocked.

Not much can be done about that unless you find a strict pattern

@rene maybe
There is already pattern detection for serial upvoting

yes, but upvoting a bunch of posts is quite different from serial upvoting

that ^

6:00 PM
If there's no connection between the person casting the vote and the person receiving the vote, there's no way to prove that it's just someone countering downvotes.
it's not fraudulent either, so is it really something that would be reversed anyway?
there's no gain in it for the person doing it, and it's not targeting any one user,
it'd be no different than someone going around downvoting a bunch of random stuff

1 message moved to Chimney

@KevinB It could be argued that it is irresponsible to go on a rampage of upvoting, just to upvote, with upvotes that just happen to be widely distributed (same for downvoting in the same manner). But I agree: doing either is rarely actionable.

Why was my "no longer needed" flag on this comment declined? After that comment, I updated my mock screenshot to feature a capitalized "Cancel" button (the one that was in my post at the time I posted the comment featured a lowercase "cancel" button).

6:25 PM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog re-raise with a custom flag and explain you handled the comment with an edit. No need to go after the who and why and when for a comment flag.

Yeah, I figured with the images that the handling mod may not have spotted it.

comment flags are handled in isolation. They might not have visited the post.

Isn't this exactly what the NLN comments should be used for?

Yes, doesn't mean the mod tooling is well designed to handle those flags

...so, they're fundamentally broken?

6:36 PM
comment flagging is a hit and miss activity yes.

Seems like it got auto-deleted due to many people flagging.

If mods are supposed to handle flags while being denied the information pivotal to the flags' primary purpose ... I call that broken. Not hit and miss. Broken.

You're free to call it what you like

You know, on SO they encourage NAA flaggers to use custom flags if it's not clear at first glance if a given answer is NAA

It is a simple rule: when seen in isolation will this flag make sense? if the answer is no, use a custom flag.

6:41 PM
Honestly? I hit the wrong button while on the queues

Don't NLN flags never make sense in isolation when used for their primary purpose?

ANd then took a look, and I don't think I'll be doing any more moderation nonight

Just don't overthink flagging. If you're getting enough handled don't sweat that one declined.

I don't mind occasional user errors.

@rene No, you let that failure fester in your belly.... sprouting and sprawling into an unstoppable corruption, consuming all self-esteem. Self-loathing is our mission, right?

6:45 PM
technically no

Do you mind SE's primary objective, or SE community's primary objective? Major difference.

@canon yes

@JohnDvorak Denied? You can see the post just fine in the mod dashboard, you don't have to visit the question page to see the context.

._.
totally human error here XD

Ah, OK then. No systemic issue here then, AFAICT.

6:51 PM
Not at all

thanks

I did it on my phone, and hit the wrong option, and didn't notice.

We tried to make the buttons bigger but... mobile is hard.

should have filled the entire screen...

Well, I do have my personal laptop but I'm too lazy to pull it out

6:53 PM
Is there mod UI in the mobile interface? The curators' review queues are notably missing.

Is the new flag dashboard responsive?

and I think I'm running a little more tired than usual
@JohnDvorak I use the responsive/desktop UI on both sites I mod, even on mobile

ah, OK. How well does that work?

Usually? Pretty well
assuming you have a reasonably sized phone with decent resolution

360x640 here. Pocket sized.

6:55 PM
I'm running on fumes tonight

Is this a new change?

ah, 5.5 inch, 1080p
@OptimusPrime there's a meta post or three about it on MSO

@OptimusPrime yeech

not... responsive... enough...
(also, why am I still awake???)

It's responsive to the company's revenue drive.

6:56 PM
@Aibobot Didn't visited meta for last few weeks. Thanks

although pesronally as a curator I admit I appreciate the extra friction to asking by unregistered users.

unregistered users haven't been able to ask on SO for some time

Unregistered registered users then...

@OptimusPrime I remember the complaints when the pages weren't wide enough. Not sure why you now all of sudden are so desperate to view the site on post-stamp size screens.

It's called a smart watch, Rene. And the font has to be crisp enough to be seen around the watch hands.

7:01 PM
You can only see the upvotes/downvotes on a smart watch

@rene I always use chrome in desktop mode on mobile

I might consider buying a smart watch once the screen is able to unfold / slide out / holo-project to 9x its idle size when in use. Without costing a fortune and breaking in six hours, may I add.

and install Stack Exchange Android app for Smart Watch?
(I think I'm either hallucinating or dreaming right now...)

... or the Stack Overflow app, which is exactly the same thing minus one menu, except it's also a completely separate code base with zero code reuse.

@JohnDvorak those were dark times.

7:05 PM
Is the app down yet? Nice.

has been a while I think

The best strategy regarding the mobile apps would be to pretend they never existed, and just add push notifications to the mobile site.

@JohnDvorak has been suggested

but then you'll get a push notification like "Private Q&A, now with added Slack power. Learn more about Stack Overflow for Teams!"

1 hour later…
8:21 PM
@JohnDvorak don't think so, more likely it's still dying slowly and painfully.
@Aibobot and 3 tons of pure drama. /cc @Opt

I've never used Slack but I hate Microsoft Teams with a passion.

Why?

I hate microsoft teams because they penned it as the replacement for "skype for business" but unlike skype for business, you can't connect skype users to it for a conversation. I very much dislike how all of their services are separate applications and don't seem to really co-mingle very well.
like, their idea of integrating "Planner" (trello) with teams is a link in teams that opens the planner app.

Heh. Wait... Are you @canon's sock?! @Kev

nah, i've actually used slack, and still do occationally

8:35 PM
@ShaWiz Pretty much what Keven just said. Coming from Skype, there was missing functionality, the UI was an unintuitive mess, and the application was rife with buggy behavior. That made me want resort to Skype... which is just an absurd desire.

I don't use and don't really know Microsoft Teams but can totally see your point.

i don't particularly like it, but one department uses it as their main channel of communication, so i have to.
we use microsoft for teams for phone meetings only

It was so obviously some executive screaming into a phone, "Get me something to compete with Slack. NOW!"

i really like discord, but, i'd rather not use it for work

same
who's the sock puppet now?

8:41 PM
Lol
Used Google Meetups today at work for the first time, and it's pretty neat.

@canon I am

9:31 PM
@KevinB hah.
We use WhatsApp extensively at work

yeah, i mean, with discord, i'd have to use a separate acct for work, and that's just a mess.
i use it extensively for gaming and whatnot
wouldn't want all that shtuff showing up on a workpc

heh, yeah
If I'd known I had to use whatsapp for work, I'd have shoved it on a different account

user300697
10:23 PM
How can I be notified of answers to a question that isn't mine?

10:34 PM
You favourite it

...or, if you want actual inbox notifications, putting a bounty on it will do that. That only lasts for a week, though, and naturally costs you rep.
Although people do have more of an incentive to answer it, then.
Favoriting it will make a number show up on the "favorites" tab in your profile when it has activity, which is slightly useless for keeping eye on something unless you're regularly checking your profile.

Rob
@user76284 Try here on the "recent" tab. Documented here.
