@Shado about nothing. They see me rollin' - Tryin' to catch me ridin' dirty

2 hours later…
2:01 AM
There's a praying mantis half a foot long in the upstairs bathroom and I'm not sure what to do about it.

No matter what you do, do not let it seduce you.

Follow Coyote Peterson's trail... (YouTube channel; warning: insects)

more seriously, they're agressive, they'll attack sticks, and that's a good way to get them out

I trapped it in an empty Pringles can and flung it into the street. Not what I expected to have to deal with when I needed the bathroom at 5AM.
(It was on the door handle. I didn't notice until I closed the door behind me, felt something tickle my thumb, and turned around to face the largest praying mantis I've ever seen.)

2:22 AM
I demand a photo

Good photo 👍

That's about the only good photo I got. Wasn't really a priority. The others all came out really blurry.

2:39 AM
Thank you
Nice critter. You could have fed it.
I mean, I'd love a feeding video`

Yeah that wasn't going to happen

Why not? Just hold a bug in tweezers and hand it to the mantis.

If I find a giant bug like a mantis inside the house, my priority is to get it out, not make it think it can get food here.

I should be able to provide a cobweb spider feeding video if there's interest.
Pringles cans do work well as containment

A: Mob-like downvoting

Journeyman GeekMeta is a strange, slightly odd, fickle beast It's kind of the internet equivalent of the agora - it's a chaotic place where ideas are brought out, argued over and occasionally there's a barfight or two. Critically as the protype meta, we have folks voting meta-style (to agree or disagree), on...

He just LOVES that quote, in different variations
Stole it from a movie or something.

5:25 AM
@Marshmallow the strange, oddly fickle beast thing?
I don't even remember where pilfered it from. Probably along with a pillow.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah. It's so unnecessarily dramatic

@Marshmallow it brings to mind the alot

> marked as duplicate by Sonic the Bracketed Hedgehog, Pierre.Vriens, hims056, Arulkumar, Ward
!!!
Wait. How's that a dupe of "How does meta work?", BTW?
Pretty sure there'd be a closer dupe

@Marshmallow grumble grumble people too eager to dupe vote grumble
THATS unnecessarily dramatic

@Rob and did they catch you?

@JNat Monday network spammer for your ever caring handling... thanks! :)

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard chat.meta.stackexchange.com/…
Mar 20 at 9:48, by Shadow Wizard
@JNat cross site spammer, for your handle care. Exists for years this time.
Wait, what does handle care mean

Looks like spammer tried to create new accounts which got auto suspended.
Anyway, they won't spam. ;)

That's a cute whale, BTW

Too mobil
Now we have two problems. What does 'astefanuk' mean?

7:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek I have to disagree with you on the MSO question. having a thick skin online isn't optional, even if just because frustration breeds hostility and attempts to address that hostility by any other means then curing the frustration only breeds more hostility
someone has to break that self reinforcing cycle, and that someone will have to have a very thick skin

I used to have a very thick skin

@Marshmallow pasteboard.co/IkRyZze.png (Sorry can't onebox)

trying to get frustrated people at large to be nice by appealing to their self interest and the goodness in their hearts may be possible with a small community, but it doesn't scale. The flow of water thing is a perfect analogy. SO is operating on a scale where only systemic change has appreciable impact.

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard The onebox apparently says Image not found for everyone but if you click on it it works

@Marshmallow where is it?

7:28 AM
@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Well, that's "with" not just "handle care"

@Marshmallow yep because it's HTML document served with .png extension, actual image is a blob.
Site needs to make money somehow. (ads)

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Illegal hunters got to it first

@Marshmallow with is over-rated
@Marshmallow did they clean it, at least?

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard I disagree with you

@Magisch heat wave started?
@Marshmallow me2

7:30 AM
Wait, does that mean we both disagree or I disagree you?
WITH is awesome.

Yes you can have ice cream

I DISAGREE UR FACE

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard yeah. It's 9:30 am and we're already at 31°

@rene will be jealous
@Magisch o_O
Hope you have AC?
@Marshmallow huh! No ice cream! grumble

@Magisch Shouldn't Germany come up with an efficient and/or bureaucratic solution?

7:31 AM
gonna be hellish this week. forecasts is 36° today, 39° tomorrow, 41° wednesday, 39° thursday, 28° friday, 34° sat, 39° sun, 39° mon

Make a really big fan and cool the weather

not a drop of water and no wind all week

@Marshmallow like forcing all places to install cooling systems? Won't happen, no money for that.

Or everyone just reinstall their AC outside

the problem is that a lot of houses here are built heavy and insulating, e.g. to keep cold out, not heat out

7:32 AM
They just hope it won't happen too often, and won't kill too many people.

Or you could just blow the hot air away with your mouth. SCIENCE.

It means that if you get a heatwave of more then a couple weeks, the houses heat up, and no amount of AC will work unless you keep it running

Then they call us a deserty country. Stereotypes

@Magisch reminds me of the total lack of anti-flood systems in Israel... every winter houses get flooded, people rescued with boats on roads, etc.
@Marshmallow no, us! :D

7:34 AM
Israel is hotter than Iran! No?

Meh, you're tiny anyway

ahvaz is awesome place
@Marshmallow size doesn't matter!
taking red button in hand

We're bigger than Germany, France, England, Spain, Italy and Portugal combined.

Those guys are cheating
They found a different continent

7:36 AM
@Magisch I don't think expecting others to have a thick skin is right or mandatory

We had this last summer. We had 6 weeks of no less then 25° during any time of day. The house I live in was so heated up that I couldn't get room temp below 32° even at night while opening all windows

That certainly shouldn't be an excuse for hostility

@JourneymanGeek This isn't a question of right or wong. In many ways, big communities act like forces of nature. It's not right that poor people's houses get flooded, but pleading with the water to recede has no impact.

@Mar come visit me here. ;)

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard . . . Wat.

7:38 AM
"This is unfair and shouldn't be happening" is true in most circumstances you outlined, but is not a solution and wanting it to not be so won't make it into one

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard I thought for a second you were for real, but remembered our countries hate each other's guts

What's happening right now is a self reinforcing feedback cycle that SE started. SE will have to end it if it is to ever end, and that won't be fun or pleasant for the employees involved.

So if you come visit me, you're undoubtedly an Israeli spy. If I come visit you, I'm undoubtedly an Iranian spy.

@Magisch it's a self reinforcing cycle that needs to be broken in many many places

7:40 AM
@Magisch they could be having a Pina Colada while doing it

@Marshmallow if I could, I had no problem going there. ;)

Thing would be the bits we need to soften up SE on wouldn't go on MSO

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Considering Iranian rial's ridiculously low price, you can probably find a luxurious hotel to be cheap enough

@JourneymanGeek Who do you reckon has the power and organizational unity to break it?

@Marshmallow I can be spy without coming to visit as well. :P

7:42 AM
But the type of pressure that breaks it can vary

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard :o Steps back from the computer

@Marshmallow Too late! I can see every step you make.... :D

Even if you convince everyone in that meta topic to work actively on breaking it, it's a drop on a hot stone compared to the amount of frustrated people. And the frustration that caused the hostility is then still there, only barely being held back.

Iran is a tourist haven for people that would realize how misguided the stereotypes are.

@Magisch well at the moment - no one

7:43 AM
Like, there's people who thought Daesh is literally beheading people here. WTF.

checking MSO to see what cactus and dog talk about

@Magisch frankly we have had the same issues SO complains about for years

I would rather go to iran then KSA

@Marshmallow huh? No... it's in Iraq.

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Probably Journey's answer to Makoto's "Goddammit I'm out"

7:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek yas, but your context is from a community where it's feasible to talk to all stakeholder users and get to know them

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Well, you know that. And that's probably not true anymore either.

Well that's an ideal.
So two different points of reference

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Some comments were purged here but you should find some nice stereotypical views in the comments nonetheless

SO needs a more organizational approach because there are too many

Even the question itself is totally lost on what healthcare in Iran looks like.

7:45 AM
Makoto and the two people in the comments
@Magisch tbh that's literally an issue I raise a lot

I wanna see how long we can keep two separate conversations going on at the same time

I'm of the opinion that in order to get any grip on the negativity and hostility on meta right now SE would have to reverse course on most of its current policies and initiatives, and that has no snowball's chance in hell of happening considering the adverse impact on their image it would have

You guys will never be as good as ELU's chatters at making the transcript confusing though

@Marshmallow hmm... pretty sure most people in Israel are well aware Iran isn't ISIS

@Magisch in the post itself there's a ton of critiques of SO's approach to that

7:47 AM
@Marshmallow 6-8 hours

The comments though...

what you see there is frustration bubbling over

@Journeyman @Magi TL;DR for that MSO drama?

these are all good people with good intentions, they've just reached their limit

What Makoto wants, bottom line?

7:48 AM
@Magisch much of the network did

@Marshmallow no worry I'm still with you too. :D

Literally every single argument there happened on SF years ago

only on SO the resolution has to be organizational and has to come from the company
including some changes they're just not going to make

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Israelites would probably know way more than Americans and Europeans anyway since they're living in the Middle East as well

@Magisch folks on both sides need to stop seeing the other as some kinda enemy

7:50 AM
@Marshmallow yup

harkening back to my comment on thick skin, in that vein, meta will continue being hostile and negative. Every employee posting there will get chewed out hard, and that has no current perspective of changing. So to avoid a total breakdown of communication some thick skin is necessary

@Magisch I can't really agree that should be a prerequisite.

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard I disagree

@JourneymanGeek I really don't like it, but that's my analysis of the situation

@JourneymanGeek I think Magisch is coming from the perspective that employees should try to respond more often to criticism, per Jon's comment that employees mostly don't visit meta because of 'relentless negativity'
I personally hope they reconsider that position since people seem more level-headed in discussing the issues now than they were last year
At least, it sounds like they're leaving most of the talking to folks who can approach this more rationally

7:54 AM
@Marshmallow well we totally need to feed back when things are broken

Feed back feedback feed feed back back

A lot of it is tone though

SE's current priorities have no plans to deal with the cause for a currently hostile core community. If those priorities stay, they'll have to get used to long term dealing with a hostile and oppositional core community

@JourneymanGeek what I'm saying is, the tone is still kinda really very cynical but it's not much the type that would discourage conversation anymore but the type that invites pep talk

And awareness of the effect our words have

8:00 AM
@Magisch typing with my boxing gloves at the moment ༼ ᓄºل͟º ༽ᓄ

Many brands have hostile and oppositional core communities, and dealing with them is possible, albeit very unpleasant and often burnout heavy on the CMs of those

I'm on fire ...

@Marshmallow you stole them from David??

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard I keep saying, it was a FAIR match and I beat him!

It did involve some illegal kicks to some parts of the body.

And mostly from my side.
Also some drug in a certain drink in his corner.

@Magisch Not just CMs. Having a single rotten apple somewhere can burn out the good parts of a community already. Imagine having a bunch of those.
In the end, there's no one that's willing to risk their sanity and try to fight and stem the flood.

@Tinkeringbell they'd end up rotting each other?

8:07 AM
@Marshmallow That too. Either they rot, or the good ones leave to a clean spot before they start rotting.

If a rotten apple rots again, does it get fixed

@Marshmallow no but worm might die. :(

@Marshmallow In the end, if it rots away entirely it turns into nutrients for the tree to grow and carry better apples. But that requires it to rot away entirely.
Not just lay there, stinking unpleasantly but never entirely rotting away.
Also... this is waaaaay too philosophical for monday 10 am.
People suck, a big online international group of people sucks even more ;) that's basically it :P

@Magisch Burn out should never be an acceptable option

@JourneymanGeek I tend to agree, but at that point you're lamenting the working conditions of like half the world's office workers
especially with working weeks tending towards a china-style 7/7/6 schedule

8:21 AM
@Magisch that said - ehhh. Commenting about CM workload and burn out is a little awkward for me. I am still kinda interested in the job.

maybe one day

(and in fact I have a lot of views on that I don't think I'd consider tasteful to share in that context)
@Magisch that said - SE should be investing in the community and giving folks less to gripe about.
But that's still not the same as "We have a right or need to be hostile"
No matter how ... well strongly you feel

they're not though. they invest in public perception and friendliness, and after that user acquisition

but that's a different conversation

@Magisch Minor detail? They changed a lot of HNQ and got IPS back on there within 6 months.

8:24 AM
@Magisch eh. That's kinda what companies do. But consider the effect that actually engaging with folks - like what Monica did to...
Also, literally the first 2/3 of the post was a analysis of things that I felt SE did wrong.

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, but that was fundamentally a change to improve public perception / outside image

@Magisch and here is the thing. We started talking a little more to CMs since
We got a means to deal with stuff like that

you did, the community does not

And that's a critical thing. Every time someone falls short, we can learn and get better if we are working with folks

this here is sort of the ivory tower of SE. and you are in the highest level of the ivory tower of SE with insider access and generally just having your inquiries answered
most users have a massively different perspective
they feel like nobody is listening, and nobody cares. that might be false, but they still feel it

8:38 AM
So, we basically need a meta post about how users want SE to communicate with them? :P

Feature request: make Teachers Lounge a public chat room, open for everyone! :P

There's not going to be one answer to that, you know... Because there's so many different cultures on here.

No, I'm basically just soapboxing rn. I think the current situation is unfixable but thankfully the decline of SE will take several more years and it'll still be good until then

@Tinkeringbell pretty sure Sonic posted exactly such a question already. :)

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard this will end in more drama, believe me.

8:40 AM
@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard I'm not that up to date about the works of the amazing hedgehog, but I thought that was about users communicating with SE, not the other way round like I just said.

@MetaAndrewT. more than now? Doubt it...

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard actually....

@JourneymanGeek it is public??? :D

SU has a room for users to contact mods
Works good

I suspect most of the interest around the TL is the allure of the forbidden
most hidden channels are dreadfully boring affairs

8:41 AM
@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard And basically there's (almost) no information in that TL room from SE that's not also public somewhere ;)
@Magisch Yep!

like the room owner room, where you don't even get bad puns to laugh at. Just antifreeze and occasional serious but boring discussion

@Magisch I can neither confirm nor deny this.... But mostly true

@Magisch Well, it's not a private party room ;)

@JourneymanGeek mods.... not SE staff. This is the crucial difference.

@Tinkeringbell neither is the TL from what I heard

8:44 AM
@Tinkeringbell point is, people want to know what they say actually reach SE staff and that staff read it. They don't expect instant response just "Yes, I saw it" notice.
On MSE, it's rarely true, or least that's the feeling we get.

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Thing is, the reason this is is because there is a managably small amount of mods

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Well... There are always employees here in the sidebar, and my guess is they are reading along ;)

while a similar feature for users would see staff get drowned in hundreds of contact requests a day

Just not giving you the 'I read you' everytime you post something in here.

@Tinkeringbell hope not! I say terrible things sometimes here.... :P

8:45 AM
@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard We did...

if any staff member regularly reads my ravings I'm probably known as "that ranty annoying cactus" internally by now :p

Maybe you are already..... :D

Meh, can't be much worse than that parrot ;)

And I'm "that ranty ever pinging shadow"..... :D

@Magisch actually no
there's a lot
and not all of them are easily contactable

8:47 AM
@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard 'ranty' was already taken as a prefix ;P You're at least unoriginal XD

renaming to Shadow The Ranty Wizard

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Nah, you can do better.

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard I mean for a TL equivilent
most of the juicy gossip does happen offsite.

@Tinkeringbell Shadow The Tinkering Wizard?

@Tinkeringbell pesteringbell :p

8:48 AM
@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard See, unoriginal :P Shadow the unoriginal wizard :P
@JourneymanGeek Where!? :P

@Tinkeringbell the RA folks run a small chat network based on matrix.
If say, I actually find a future mrs geek who is not hypothetical for example, they would be the second bunch of folks to know.
(cause a certain almost newest CM would be annoyed if I didn't tell her first ;p)

Ohh. I once joined a discord with a few IPS people but that thing is dead now.
No juicy offsite gossip there...

@Tinkeringbell that place is a bit wierd

@JourneymanGeek Just make sure to ping her in the Mod Room, so I can see too :P

We didn't totally quit (like serverfault's chat) or lose a set of fairly core users (like Security.SE did)
We kinda just use both. Most stuff happens on RA (where we kinda have a no swearing rule) and we have a bunch of rooms on matrix for stuff we don't want to talk in public chat, and looser language rules
@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard Well, that's kind of a thing.
In the smaller early days, we'd see CMs or even Jeff pop into our chat a lot
that disconnect kinda bothers me a bit
I mean, logically I get it

8:55 AM
theory: we have 173 sites

CMs can't be everywhere

I don't even remember the last time a staff member posted here

@Magisch we do have CMs pop in here
Ivory tower and all

aye

@MetaAndrewT. well true. And that's part of the pain point here

8:56 AM
probably a timezone thing

You can't really scale 'horizontally', though I do feel SE could have done better historically on that
But there's only so much process adjustments can do
And that 'style' of community management and communication is unusual so you got nothing you can really go on
(I mean, I'd love for them to scale horizontally, but it would be an insanely hard sell)

proposal: have sub-CMs that cover/monitor specific SE sites and only those sites

@MetaAndrewT. they used to kinda do that

calculated based on.... unknown criteria (number of flags? meta activity?)

but you'd still need to hire folks to do that
say if you had a person for every, say 10 sites. That's still 17-18 extra people
That's pretty much bigger than the team was at its biggest.

9:02 AM
Yeah, 1 can probably cover 30 small beta sites, but 2 for SO alone...

Beta sites are probably more work done right

And you'd be reinventing stackoverflow.blog/?s=CHAOS
(Actually, there's one way that could work - baby CMs as work placements ;p)
Well, would need someone smarter than me to iron out the details but grab a few folks as interns, also expose them to the other teams...
but ya, practically CHAOS 2.0

@JourneymanGeek Please... not even more chaos? :P

@Tinkeringbell I don't want to say you're too new to know, but...

9:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek Actually, I read about that.

I felt it was one of SE's better ideas

I do read a lot ;)

I'm too new to know...

It's not always good to read a lot though.
You get strange ideas from time to time.

True... that's why I stop reading network-wide meta sites...

9:11 AM
I just don't want more chaos, this thing is chaotic enough already!

I don't really have time to read network wide meta sites ;p

Especially as someone who can't do anything if the sites have internal conflicts

Oh if only
I sometimes get dragged into other site messes after all ;p
Not often thankfully
but there's one or two situations where I actually have a bit of cultural familiarity

29.2° in the office @ 62% RH

@Magisch I read on the news this morning that 28 was the upper bound for light office work.
So yeah, not acceptable, file a complaint. Did you ever get your fan back?

9:20 AM
@Tinkeringbell the offer processing office in the front is already at 32°, 64%

My room is 25.5 65% ;p

no I did not get my fan back, but I can't blame marketing. They're suffering 3+° worse then me rn and it's a crammed tiny office
not like I could retrieve it now anyways, after the reorg there is no longer a free outlet here for it anyways

@Magisch no aircon?

we have AC, but it's not used as two people in my office get headaches from the temp differentials that are caused by it
or something. The bottom line is they don't allow aircon while they're in the office, and they're both in all week

in this situation though
that seems a bit unfair

9:27 AM
Yeah.

situation in the marketing office is bad as always though
they're gonna grill this week, literally

@Tinkeringbell Shadow the unoriginal wizard

@Tinkeringbell I have a feeling that'd draw ire

@Magisch Well, maybe the boss can give the aircondition-allergists leave to work from home? So the airconditioning can be turned on for all other people?

doubt it, they both have physical jobs in the actual office

9:38 AM
:(

I'll survive :P

You're a cactus, after all ;)
But good luck surviving :)

@rene If I may, I'll respond to your comment here - so that I don't leave long thread of comments on the main site.
> The system isn't lifting or reinstating a quality ban. It checks when you post a question if you meet the quality ban criteria. If you do, the question is rejected. Users in a q-ban can always ask a question every 6 months after their last question (deleted and non-deleted).
From the wording in the FAQ it seems as if the outcome only depends on the most recent question and the FAQ explicitly mentions reinstating the ban: "ask one new one 6 months after your last question. If that question is positively received, you may be able to continue asking questions; if not, then the ban will be reinstated."
But maybe that is just a bit imprecise formulation in the FAQ.
To add some context for others, the above is related to the question: What “positively received” means in the conditions for lifting the question ban?
Now I see that you have edited your comment a bit.

Remember that the exact details of the question ban are secret

That's probably true. I was looking at what the higher powers told us in the FAQ.
Maybe I should also mention that I have asked this after somebody posted this question on Mathematics Meta: No longer accepting questions? Then back and forth?
Based on rene's comments, it seems likely that the post ban works a bit differently than I thought based on (my reading of) the FAQ.

10:00 AM
@Martin yeah, I'm not sure how many words are needed but users shouldn't cherry pick from that particular FAQ. So don't focus on the 6 months and all will be fine

Ok.
It's possible that I have misunderstood the FAQ or that not all details are spelled out there.

@Martin the FAQ on SO for the same topic was rewritten a bit: meta.stackoverflow.com/a/255584/578411 maybe that one is clearer on that specific part?

Now I am a bit worried that I might have misinformed a user with my answer on a per-site-meta - I'll check whether I should reformulate it a bit, or turn my answer into a comment.
@rene It seems that this specific part has the same wording on SO: "If you're unable to improve your existing questions, you'll get the chance to ask one new one six months after your last question. If that question is positively received, you may be able to continue asking questions; if not, then the ban will be reinstated, and you'll have to wait another six months to ask your next question"

@Martin emphasis on may

If that question is positively received, you may be able to continue asking questions;

10:04 AM
"IF you eat your brocolli, you may get ice cream"
Which won't happen if you fling your peas instead

Fair point. The word may is quite important there.

The MSO FAQ is locked so I would need to flag it to add bolding on "may"
I've flagged the MSO answer with an clarifying edit. Let's hope a mod agrees.
I've rushed it and now the flag is wrong :/
I can have a declined flag on MSO. it is not that I'm close to a flag ban or so ...

10:30 AM
@Martin The Q-ban is a status. When you pass a certain threshold, then it's enabled (i.e. you're Q-banned). When you're Q-banned, you can ask 1 question per 6 months, but your status is still under Q-banned (it's not lifted nor reinstated). Tangentially, upvotes improve the situation, no matter if it's on the latest question or older questions.
(I should have favorited the SE staff's comment stating the above mechanism... now I can't find it)

I looked it up out of curiosity, the legal limit for continous working in a room is 35°. If it's above that, the room is unsuitable for working in it
but under is fine

@Magisch I ran your numbers through arbobondgenoten.nl/arbothem/fysisch/klimaat/calculator-wbgt.htm ... It says that for 32 degrees, with a 64 % humidity, some sun coming in through the windows and no/little aircon/airflow, they advise working 15 minutes and taking a break for 45!

10:48 AM
I take the 45 hours break now ....

@Tinkeringbell sad marketing department

@rene Well, tweak the numbers a little and apparently you can get days off :P

I don't know what to do. I guess I'll just get no work done. I'm sweating just from sitting at my desk

@Magisch 1.) Keep breathing. 2.) Drink a lot 3.) Put your head under a stream of cold water 4.) Eat icecream 5.) chat here ;)

No.1 is very important...

10:52 AM
