02:00 - 13:0013:00 - 23:00

1:00 PM
the hard part is getting started

I have had to actually exercise keeping my energy levels and mental motivation up
@JourneymanGeek absolutely

I picked up a raspberry pi zero W for something

@Mithrandir do you feel the sugar rush?

I need to dig up a few things and but a few to get it working. At the moment my blocker is... finding a USB OTG adaptor I know my dad has

a friend taught me the five minute method for that: if i have something to do, i am not obligated to do any more than five minutes of it. if i do five minutes, then stop, that is absolutely fine, or if i keep going, that is also fine too.
doing that on a regular basis helps build up a habit of doing the hardest part of just starting with it
and has lead to me spending hours cleaning or doing other stuff i wouldn't normally

1:03 PM
@doppelgreener yup
but I also have constant distraction from parents. ;p

Myeah, I have to try something like that. There's a couple of things I really want to learn/do, but it's so much easier to play Overwatch :D

I also find that breaking up a problem helps
My router project was really nice for that since I basically got to break it up into... essentially 4-5 smaller projects
(also (shhh- I did a lot of it from work since I could SSH into it))

For shame!

@JourneymanGeek Did you take the trash out?
A great man once (or twice, I wasn't there) said your fear of doing something is greater than that something itself

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ naw, we drop it down a chute

1:10 PM
Imam Ali did, actually.
@JourneymanGeek Did you clean up the chute?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ basically my parents got used to me taking care of the dog, and constantly asking me to help with anything vaguely technological
which is an epic pain

Your part, actually
@JourneymanGeek Ugh IKR

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ naw. its self cleaning
I did however fix it because the latch was broken with some epoxy putty for a friction close.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I was funemployed then
I have a job and a lot less free time

My phone doesn't do this weird thing I want it to do. Come and check it out and there is an implicit implication that you should be able to fix it in 10 minutes.
^ Bart's generation

more or less
I think you missed most of the matchmaking whining ;p

1:13 PM
Can't help it. Don't even have time to watch a decent movie anymore
I get one ping and it's Sha being Sha

Not a very reliable source of updates on stuff

"I hear you're good with computers, why don't you fix mine for free?"
everyone ever, everywhere

The look they give you when it's beyond repair or you can't fix it is much better than the free service thing
You kinda half-expect a cartoonish "So you're not that good at computers? :'("
At least in my case
You geeks probably get better offers

@Magisch also the fact that I maintain our home network, and since its hard to get buy in for installing cables, its mostly this unholy jerryrigged and slightly mysterious mess no one but me gets
Its reliable, but there's a few quirks

"I thought you were good with the computers" yes susan but your laptop is crusted with an unthinkable paste and popularized by actual ants. it is no wonder your MB gave out.

lol
also I kinda hate my job XD

1:17 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I expected "You can't do that?! No kidney for you!". :P

We have a coworker here whose keyboard, computer, mouse and workstation is crusted in this slightly sticky grey-black goo

@Magisch I recall a story where someone's computer actually had a beehive in it...

(but I think y'all guessed by now)

that nobody knows what it is but it smells and IT doesn't touch it

but I hate being unemployed even more XD
@Magisch 0_0

1:18 PM
@ShadowWizard Well too late, I'm clinging on to this one until you get grandchildren of grandchildren

repulsive

@Magisch so... full biohazard gear, bleach and fire?

@forest or ants in keyboard?

Q: What's the best way to get ants out of laptop keyboards?

wayneWhat's the best way to gets ants out of a laptop?

@Magisch See if it hatches
Please update us if the gamma radiation hasn't already gotten to you
@ShadowWizard The order of title and body is messed up

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ that would be like.... 60 years? :D

1:20 PM
The title has more details . . . But it's Journey's site so whatever

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ blame the green identicon, not me! :D

its an old, crappy question ;p

Crappy? With score of 38? lol

@Magisch really hope it's not....
Black tar heroin is a form of heroin that is sticky like tar or hard like coal. Its dark color is the result of crude processing methods that leave behind impurities. Despite its name, black tar heroin can also be dark orange or dark brown in appearance. It is generally less expensive than other forms of heroin.Black tar heroin is impure morphine diacetate. Other forms of heroin require additional steps of purification post acetylation. With black tar the product's processing stops immediately after acetylation. Its unique consistency however is due to acetylation without a reflux apparatus. As...

@ShadowWizard the third chattiest on main chat ;p

1:27 PM
Well he's lucky I've got real life syndrome

And have for two years

So what movie did you try to watch? @M.A.R.

@ShadowWizard no it's just the person in question is quite unsanitary and pretty obese so

I watched a crappy movie last night on TV. :/

1:29 PM
LOL @Journey what the heck is that on your meta?
@ShadowWizard Go watch Hell or High Water
R-rated, customer beware
But a gooood movie
BRB lunch is burning

@Magisch oh, so maybe it's just black earwax. All good. :P

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ wait what?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ too lazy to download
Didn't open my torrent client for long time, since downloading last season of Dexter.
@JourneymanGeek what what?
R rated can be due to "only" violence. :)
@M.A.R. isn't uncouth.
;)

well to the burning lunch I suppose

ohhhh lol

Julia Silge & Jason Punyon on December 04, 2018

This past summer, we wrote our first blog post about comments on Stack Overflow, focusing on our initial work rating comments internally at Stack Overflow and what we learned. Since then, we’ve fielded this comment rating task more broadly in our community. This blog post shares some of what we are learning.

I (Jason) wrote a web application that presents a user with a comment thread from a post on Stack Overflow and asks the user to rate each comment in the thread as fine, unwelcoming, or abusive. Our first blog post shared results from when we asked employees at Stack Overflow, includin …

@Mithrandir same time, same place, same plastic bag...? :P

3:07 PM
Different location.

lol
Well that's Israel for you.... great views, great people, and... lots of plastic bags.

I mean... same general location, but different specific location. ;)

ah... yeah, this particular bag I might not really want to open at all, eugh

@EKons heh, nothing to open, it's surely all torn anyway. ;)

it looks like one piece...

3:09 PM
That's what you get from long years of getting those bags for free in super markets.

definitely don't want to peek inside that
oh, here in Greece they're not free anymore (0.04€ per bag by law)

Only a year ago they started to charge money for the bags, and got a drop of 80% as result. :)
@EKons yeah, same here, though for less money.
It's not about the amount of money, it's the principle: people won't take something which is not free anymore.

yeah, the second-to-last thing before heading out of a store nowadays is "will you take a bag?"

0.10NIS here

3:11 PM
I always have some in the car trunk.

lol

I usually just stick whatever I'm buying in my sweatshirt pocket or under my bike seat :P

we actually keep those bags under a counter to use them as trash bags :P

@Mithrandir bread in your pocket?! o_O

Nah, if it's bread I'll usually just hold it.

3:12 PM
throw the cheese!

@Mithrandir while riding bikes? That's risky!
:D

well... if he doesn't mind the bread taking the shape of the handle... :P

imagining @Mithrandir riding his bike with bread in one hand, milk in the other hand
In theory one should be able to ride hands free.... but....

Buying both at the same time? Who does that?

@Mithrandir I do!

3:14 PM
Oh, I can ride hands free when I need to.

@Mithrandir haha! Busted.
reporting to police
:P

actually, you can use your head to steer your bike, just one downside: the road might become... invisible :P

It's easier - but more dangerous - with your feet attached to the pedals.

@EKons no worries, I suspect the road will become visible pretty soon after that.

lol

3:15 PM
lol

yikes

Like, if I'm riding with something in my hand I can't go up the stairs...

hm, I suspect the road will also turn... bloody red ;-P

@EKons see his avatar! Obviously @Mithrandir's blood is blue... :D

Oh, I'm a royal now. Cool!

3:30 PM
@ShadowWizard just like the veins on your hands? yeah, right

or a horseshoe crab

@Mithrandir um... don't you have a job over Buckingham palace or something? ;-)

@Derpy heh. Go ask @ber, he's in Den. (which isn't common anymore these days. ;))

I should go scare him again some day. Good old times.

@Bart who? @ber? Yes, totally! :P

5:19 PM
Just a reality check: it's no longer Monday, is it?

correct
it is Tuesday

even at UTC-12...
looks like somebody's exhausted :P

Feels like Monday...
@EKons Tired, grumpy... Nowhere near exhausted yet, don't worry

You should do what I did... have two coffees, two hot chocolates, and three cups of caffeinated tea over the course of a few hours... you won't be tired anymore.

For now, I probably should have dinner, but I'm not home yet :(

5:24 PM
ah, I feel sorry :-(

Over thirty minutes of delays :(

5:41 PM
@Tinkeringbell ouch! Car? 🚗

I hope she isn't texting in her car... o_o

@ShadowWizard Trains..
NS again ;)
@EKons I either carpool or use public transport. I don't drive without a coach yet.
At least not to and from work ;)

Soon we will all have autonomous cars... :)
Cars where we have to drive by ourselves would look ancient, like dial phone today. ☎

I know @Tink travels by public transport because she answered my question on IPS about the same topic.

@ShadowWizard And I'd never trust them. I would never get in one, not even with three coaches!

5:56 PM
@Tinkeringbell hmm, I'm home already, no problems ...where are you stuck?

@rene Right now? At home :P train arrived too late at Arnhem And picked up more delay along the way

Ah, yeah the we're delayed and will not bother to make up for lost time

...and no, don't ask us for free €€€
:P

More then 30 minutes is a refund, I think?
I think I used that option once

here in Greece? hahahahahaha... aahhahaahhaahahahahhhaaah
although... metro never has so long delays unless some out-of-schedule thing happens
but the bus... that's a different story :P

@EKons prove it is 30 minutes indeed: ns.nl/en/customer-service/refunds/…

6:33 PM
@rene yep ...

How rude, they have a card type Dagkaart Hond (dayticket Dog). Is that for travelling in the overhead bin?

@rene It's a special discount for @JourneymanGeek :P

:D

@rene Nah, you get attached to the train with a leash, and have to follow them on the tracks.

lol

6:37 PM
@rene woah... you shouldn't even hope for that in Greece lol
refund just for 2.30€?!
@Bart and get out alive, right?

@EKons ïf you don't survive you get a refund.

heh

@Bart fair

alright, first thing to remember when going to the Netherlands is to be clever and use Dagkaart Hond :P

This morning it felt like spring over here. I want winter!

I want real winter mainly because not having it will mean an insect plague next spring & summer
These guys in particular are a pest on the garden and have been climbing the house sides trying to get inside since the weather isn't cold enough to kill them off: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elasmostethus_interstinctus

I want real winter because it stops me from sweating :D Give me below zero

I want real winter because a snowfall a day keeps the school far at bay

snowfall just makes it more annoying to get to work by bike
this company hasn't been closed due to snowfall in the 45+ years it's been operating

6:51 PM
yeah, companies aren't really used to closing for snowfalls...

then again I'm in southern germany, it doesn't get too cold here and if it does not a lot of snow fals anyways. Highest I remember in my lifetime was 0.5m

highest I remember is... 0.25m

the blog post about the data conclusions from the comment rater bot are interesting btw, I hope they do more of these. Seeing some methodology of data scientists explained in a normal person understandable way is really interesting

@Magisch DDT is the solution.
>:-)

All mosquitoes are dead here. Fifteen degrees is perfect

7:10 PM
perfect here would be this weather + about 4 weeks of ~-9--11 consistent to kill off all the nasty bugspawn

um... 19?

> Why do you want to do this? You have conflated at least three problems here.
If that's an example of unfriendly/abusive, I'm just throwing my hands up.
8

tbh emphasising the why like that can lend itself to a certain smugness

:crystalball:

That can easily be rewritten as You conflated at least three problems here. What's your reason for choosing this approach?

7:18 PM
that's no better or worse than the original
other than the accusation is up front

^

@Magisch Add a please. Problem solved. ;P

Add an eggplant emoji

@KevinB idk, to me emphasising the why like that sounds smug/dismissive
I wouldn't flag it, but I wouldn't feel good about getting that comment either

it's critisizm
it's not meant to feel good, it's meant to coerce change
the user didn't explain themselves properly, the comment is asking them to do so

7:21 PM
that's the thing... comments have to feel good nowadays

I only want to feel good. Help me, unconditionally.

It's unsolicited criticsm. "I asked for help not criticism!"
This is help. This is an intervention. You're doing it wrong.

I'm on board with criticism
but the criticism doesn't lose any validity, accuracy or acuity by toning down the tone a bit

If anything, that italicized "why" meant, to me, that the OP should hang on that word and heavily consider their motivations.

As @KevinB rightly said, criticism is there to induce change. Consider your average OP. They're not going to be shamed into right ways. An action is going to produce an equal and opposite reaction. Part of giving effective criticism is to play into what's effective. I'm not convinced being very forceful like that is really effective
It might feel good, catharthic even, but it runs the risk of producing a "no u" type of response rather then actual introspection

7:25 PM
I remember the first time I popped into an IRC channel and started asking low-ball Debian linux questions. I got RTFM'd to death. It was unpleasant but I took a moment for some adult introspection.... and then went to read the ****ing manual.

I'm the same way, I got batted pretty bad when starting out, but it's not everyone's thing. You can't realistically assume everyone will take it in stride. Being cognizant of your tone and a little nicer is almost free

That's just it, though. I didn't get a combative, snide, or smug tone from that "why". Italicizing "conflated" would have been a little more combative and I kind of wish that's where they'd delivered the coup de grace. :P
I kid, of course.

right... but whether or not the comment is effective or not... isn't what makes it friendly or not friendly, or rude, etc. There's always other ways you can word what you're trying to say such that it reads as if it's being read by a cute bunny in candyland. I personally am turned away from such comments and rather the fluff be left out.

7:40 PM
Are there any new statistics on user activity and new user retainment/questions flagged etc since The Welcoming?
I feel like every "new user" question I see is closed, same as usual

i mean... the welcoming wasn't meant to fix that

It wasn't meant to fix anything 😛 It was a blame game
However, from the ashes spawned the "____ is a new user try to be nice!" code of conduct
Because we were all super terrible people
But I haven't seen a new user question not downvoted in months now

i can't tell who is a new user
bsides rep value, but that's not guaranteed either

yeah, i adblocked that, because i felt it was biasing my actions.

7:53 PM
That's hilarious lol

seeing it annoyed me, resulting in potentially rude comments :shrug:

I wonder if there are measurable stats on the new contributor badge
I don't see it being much different. Nobody knows how to ask a question these days

it's hard for me to judge questions now days... like, all of them are caused by lack of understanding or ability to debug... and that just boggles my mind. How can you not understand the CORS error being presented to you telling you exactly what is wrong and how to fix it, and even if you don't, how can you not take said error and paste it into google to get an even more thorough explanation, with examples in your language of choice for how to fix it

In other news: Advent of Code is on. This year I decided to participate in Javascript.

there was certainly a time in the past where i didn't know how to open up a debugger
SO didn't exist

7:58 PM
I wonder if adding a "how to debug" wiki to the FAQ would help

tag wiki's sometimes have links to debugging tutorials

New users have no idea what the hell a tag wiki is
When they tag a question, pop up some stuff so they don't tag java, javascript, python, c, C++, C--, --C, F#, BFlat and java 3 more times

Not that I can think of.
@Tinkeringbell lol, that made me search for "hat" in the chat history ... which turned up this wonderful gem ... not exactly in the same spirit. :D

@Bart Ouch. Interesting comment thread, that was :P

Good old days

@Bart I'm reading that as 'it's a pity MSE now has mods, it takes all the fun out of life'. Correct me if I'm wrong :P

Back then most of the drama around Meta came from weird trolls. That was fun every now and then.

@Tinkeringbell OI WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST MODS? ;p

Everything

more seriously @Bart - there'll likely still be weird trolls ;p

9:09 PM
@JourneymanGeek is that a promise?

Probably

That's why you are in my top 3 favourite new MSE moderators.

@Tinkeringbell too much frozen referencing :P

@SterlingArcher Awww. :( Someone doesn't like building snowmen.

Oh man that was way less heavy than I was expecting but great voice!

@Mithrandir If I said that is by the creators of south park.. from "Cannibal the Musical" it should be context enough

South park? What's that?

9:44 PM
@Mithrandir It's a place about 60 miles from me and shog in the southern part of park county, also a TV comedy series that's incredibly irreverent about a town from roughly the same area (fictional)

I'll just drop this, since we were on the topic of metal-ish covers and @Alex just dropped in, and then head to sleep:

@Mithrandir Nice.

They did... basically every song from the movie

9:51 PM
@Mithrandir When You Believe?

That one too, but skipped the second half for some reason

Thanks.

not really metal for that one though :P

Eh, it's his voice I like.

Yeah Caleb does some really good stuff
random selection: Warriors, Defying Gravity, I'm Still Here (spot of profanity before the song actually starts), The Other Side
and while I'm recommending artists, Peter Hollens. examples: Take Me Home, Country Roads, Hobbit Drinking Medley, Disney Medley

9:59 PM
I was actually just listening to Hollens.
