@Catija from a certain point of view ;)

Also make any edits you can see before migrating. The revision history will be erased (well, still accessible via a link, but mostly invisible) and if you do it well this ensures the question stands the best chance of being well-received at the destination.

(NPR became programmers became... I can't remember?)

@Shog9 You're preaching to the choir here...

see, that logo looks classy in chat

right, that. Its still early and the coffee hasn't kicked in yet ;)
and hah, 3 monitors ;)

Maybe the way it's used is wrong? I mean, it's a temporarily pool of ... misc goods, each with multiple potential tags, mods and high rep users from sites with associated tags can move those into their sites if it's determined appropriate. The residual ... well stays on misc

NPR? What did that even stand for?
Other than the obvious.

Not Programming Related ;)

So... people would ask cooking questions there?

Anonymous
The name was problematic.

I can imagine.

12:06 AM
tbh, I kinda never went there so I have nooooo idea

The amusing thought of a site going from "Not Programming Related" to "Programmers"... is odd.

@Catija in a sense it was presumably for the non pointy end of the programming spear.
"Old master once say, it broken shaft makes reaching hard"

Not Programming Related was what the Off Topic close reason was originally called on SO... So folks would tend to close more subjective questions as Not Programming Related. Or "Subjective & Argumentative", but that's not a great name to sell folks on the idea of a new site.

@Catija Any time someone suggests we are good at building communities, I remember that saga. It's a useful memento mori.

12:09 AM
@JonEricson I'd argue you guys are terrible, but it happens anyway ;)

@JonEricson You're good at building communities... just need some work at defining them. :P

The first month of the site was exactly what you'd expect: "What do programmers eat for breakfast?" "How do I tell my co-worker he smells?" "How do you know when you are tired of programming in your life?"

One of the core ideas of SO was kind of to minimise anything close to social interaction right? ;p

Anonymous
yet here we are.

So Joel & Jeff look at it & say, "wow, what a mess" and it got... redirected.

12:10 AM
@JeremyBanks in spite of best efforts? ;p

I'm sort of surprised you didn't just dump it in the trash and start over.

A: Why was the Programmers site on Stack Exchange created?

Shog9Origin Story If you browse questions on Meta for a bit, you'll quickly realize that there are a fair number of people who want to use SO for things that SO wasn't designed to be used for: discussions, polls, flame-wars, endless lists... And over time, this has created some amount of irritation o...

> The idea that this site was destined to become the cesspool of SE didn't sit very well with the goals SE Inc. had in mind for their network.
Ouch.

lol
Yeah, sometimes things do go spectacularly wrong.

... So... is it fair for me to edit that FAQ to say:
Votes are cleared on posts with scores below 0. Posts with 0 or greater score retain their votes which are attributed to the Community user.

@rene one way is to google the exact title. As it returned other sites than SO, it should give a hint that it was on HNQ (as Shog has also explained about site referral)

@SmokeDetector also, thanks Smokey for greeting me with spam... you're the only one... ;(

The fly picture is disturbing.

user202362
you don't like fly flavoured, condensed milk?

or condensed fly flavoured milk...

I tend to avoid using fly flavoring, it makes everything a little too briny.
Luckily I don't have to deal with flys. My cat eats them.

user202362
@_@ your cat is amazing

Yeah, he's my favorite cat of the 4 I have had in my life. Once, in the middle of the night at like 1am, there was this fly in my office, and I was going to try to attack it, but then it disappeared and I heard this weird thud behind me, and my cat had done this like backflip to catch the fly and then he ate it.

8:31 AM
backflip :O
imagining the scene...
must be ninja cat

Yeah, he sleeps in ninja poses also

Random thought of the day: If you use time travel to accomplice yourself during a crime, do you get double the punishment?

8:47 AM
@JohnDvorak you should first decide if meeting yourself will create an universe destroying paradox or not.

@JohnDvorak you just serve the sentances concurrently. Both of you.
2 messages moved to Chimney

user202362
can't you make your two older self to accomplish the crime?

Why not just have your future self do the time for you.

No paradoxes. The Novikov self-consistency principle is fully in charge.

user202362
they can't punish you for a crime you committed later right?

8:51 AM
I like the idea of skirting the law by escaping to the past/future.
It also gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "helping oneself to some money"

What if, instead of crime, you just bought $100 of GE stock in the late 1800's.

As in, physical paper bills with the company signature?

user202362
if it's money you are after and you can time travel, there are easier ways than to commit a crime

I think I just read about time-travel thingy somewhere

I could research gold deposits in Alaska and then know exactly where to break the tent

8:53 AM
@AndrewT. Yes, here.

ah, apparently it's on YouTube by 3blue1brown

Yeah I agree, it seems rather petty to commit a crime if you can time travel.

That also explains why so little gold has been left for the contemporaries.

@TravisJ for the kick / adrenaline rush?

user202362
to plan a revenge would be a much more interesting plot if you are able to use time travel

8:54 AM
or not... apparently it's by minutephysics
(then everyone goes silent again)

user202362
err, people have other things to do?

I think everyone's watching the video

or some are now time travelling

I was watching part of the Late Late Show with James Corden

user202362
I am communicating with a seller about a tent, also continue to clean up the trash on the server

9:08 AM
Make sure it comes with A/C and satellite TV.

Why did I just imagine a waiter buried under some rubble?

user202362
I don't watch TV, maybe only watching it passively because someone else is watching

user202362
it's about the same tent I showed a picture of on here, I paid for it a week ago, I just want it shipped over but seller kept on asking me questions

Tell them if they can't get it properly shipped there is a kingkong wookie in New York that will be passing through who can smuggle it to you.
Honestly though, how hard can it be to get a tent shipped? Don't they collapse down into sleeping bag -ish size?

user202362
Well, the seller first said that the outer layer would be slightly different colour and asked me if that's okay, I told the seller that if it's just the colour that's slightly different, then it's okay. Then the seller asked about inner layer because inner layer is of slightly different colour also. Seller sent me 4 messages within the past 2 hours.

user202362
9:22 AM
I just want have that tent in my hand before Xmas

It is probably orange and glows in the dark.

user202362
it's green and waiting for that confirmation of shipment email

Orange is the new green

sigh, why does my surface say "Plugged in, not charging"
Why is "not charging" even an option?!

9:28 AM
it saves battery life

@TravisJ it is working too hard, exit Notepad so the CPU gets some time off

@Telkitty just request the seller to send the photo...

user202362
she did

I mean, LiIon batteries tend to self-ignite at about 110% charge or so

@JohnDvorak So at some point it will start charging? I worry that it is going to lose the battle. It is at 85%

9:30 AM
IIRC, 40%-60% is optimal for the battery longevity

hm

there's probably a power mode that lets you top off the charge if you'll be needing it soon

but I never see 60% and "plugged in, not charging" though

"I know somebody who know somebody who could rip your arms off. Let the wookiee win"

@JohnDvorak Okay, I will just let it slide and see if at some point fires back up.

You can try increase the amperage...

@TravisJ Notepad can bring a beefy server to its knees (been there, done that) ....

Wow, this font does not show pi very well

Is that pi!?
oh yeah, apparently it is

@TravisJ No, I opened a log file which happened to be the transaction log of the production Oracle database ...

@Telkitty That looks like a scam.
@rene Surprised Oracle even supports transactions.

It definitely supports money transactions from your account to theirs

That is only supported in the Enterprise edition

A: How are the contents of the Community Bulletin determined?

Shog9The rules are as follows: If there is a community moderator election, a link to it appears in the bulletin. Events can be created with a start date and time, an end date and time, a simple title, and a link to something somewhere on the network. Current or upcoming events are listed, with those...

Does anyone know how gaining delete votes works on ungraduated sites?
Do you still get only 1 per 1000 reputation past the deletion privilege?

I would assume it is scaled down just like anything else.

and now, for the fights of the day. Chrome: what is better? AdBlock or Adblock Plus?
(next week coming up: uBlock vs uMatrix)

@rene So in your theory since deletion is at 2000 rather then 10000 you'd get a 6th deletion vote at 2200?

1:59 PM
@Magisch that would be inline with how the other functions work but I could see how it might be a fixed constant in the code base, in which case I would call that a bug.

I have 5000 rep and around 8 delete votes, so...
I don't remember if I have voted to delete something today though

@AndrewT. You start with 5, so 8 for 5k would be in line with 1 extra vote every 1k
> At 2,000 reputation, you can cast 5 delete votes per day. An additional vote is granted per 1000 reputation, to a maximum of 30 delete votes per day.
Looks like it's 1 extra per 1000, and that it's intentional

fair enough

Maybe it's worth asking on MSE if that should be changed?
As it stands, you'd need 27.000 rep to get your 30 delete votes per day
Bit steep for a ungraduated site, methinks

On [main], you are expected to write proper English (as advertised on English Language & Usage), but here on Meta Stack Exchange it's more important to have freehand circles, so please edit your post, otherwise I'll have to flag you (see the FAQ). If you're unsure how to use your keyboard, Super User is the right place to ask. There's no Q&A site about unicorns yet, but you can suggest one on Area 51. — balpha ♦ Jun 6 '11 at 11:48
@balpha - just BTW, the FAQ comment is broken - it redirects to /help/flags, but the URL is /help/flagging.

2:08 PM
hmm, thanks

@Magisch but you need to prove that your current delete votes are not enough causing low quality content to remain only due to lack of enough delete votes for all users combined

@Magisch but I'm not sure you will use all 30 del votes on ungraduated site, even more daily

hah lol

@rene I think it's odd that the last privilege you earn on a beta site is at 5000
and then again at 27000
seems off to me

@Magisch true but if it wasn't a problem either so far there was no real need to change it any sooner
still if change is needed, it will be done in 6 to 8 weeks ...
Some SE dev might need to watch their language ... // f$#!~&(g checkRemove looks at this class when handling comment flags ...

2:17 PM
lol

umm... anyway, who has used all 30 del votes daily?

not me
though some days, it seems possible here ;p

@AndrewT. I think some SOCVR regulars manage that. But they keep lists of posts they want to be gone.

@Mithrandir fixed (next build)

I wonder how it looks on mod tools's "delete" tab on SO

2:21 PM

@Magisch nuuuuu

psst, serial voting

@Magisch why?

2:41 PM
How do you manage not to click it
I have to click at every +5 to see where it comes from

great self control

It takes practice and that ^
@Magisch i know where it comes from. On SO from find a string in another string and the rest is from MSE.

@Magisch I wouldn't use DV as an abbreviation for delete vote. It is easy confused with down vote.
despite context

Jan 1 '15 at 2:50, by Unihedro
Originally when conventions were established, dv-pls was downvoting, and delv-pls was deletion; all of a sudden, dv-pls became deleting, and downv-pls became downvoting.
though I don't really agree with that
I'm not really surprised if someone exhausts their del votes on IPS though... too many deletion potential

@ShadowWizard bluefeet got promoted?

@ShadowWizard thanks

@Magisch not sure it's "promoted", but yeah, changed role from CM to DBA.

I’ve been brushing dust off of my DBA skills and learning about our many SQL Servers around here. Helping out Nick C with some of the sql work they have to do.
Now we know why. ^

@ShadowWizard nice

@bluefeet by the way, who exactly is on DAG team? Is this listed somewhere?
I know Mr. Friend is their PM and Oded was part of the team, but not sure who else?

3:24 PM
@ShadowWizard not sure if there is a list anywhere

It is a virtual team ...

What? You can make it do virtually anything ...

asking a Q and answering it virtually...
on Stack Exchange (Virtual Reality version)

Virtual can become reality: newscientist.com/article/…

This mSO post was one heck of a hit job

This is SO. We hate fun. ...except during winterbash... and even then we have haters.

Kind of getting tired of that narrative canon, gotta be honest.

@TravisJ which?

The "we hate fun" attitude that many espouse but really no one buys into
We hate fun has led to a bunch of dry, boring, drab questions - many without any useful insight.
We will have 100 questions of the same topic with a slight twist and be okay with it, but 1 question with a little bit of fun and it gets completely shut down? It really annoys me. It used to not bother me, except that it is so hypocritical.
Developers in general get to have a lot of leisure.
A friend of mine is an ER doctor at a level 1 trauma center. I could understand if she had the mantra "we hate fun".
Makes absolutely no sense here.

6:05 PM
for all this strict adherence to guidelines, it feels like we have a lot of crap anyway
sad to see a glimmer of joy stamped out with jackbooted determination...
but that kind of grim resolve is what it takes to deal with the onslaught of crap, I guess
¯_(ツ)_/¯

Lol, I still see crap all over the place.

I was agreeing with that :)
Over the past week I made a parallax scroller, and was having some issues with the animation tearing on an iPhone in iOS. I solved it on my own, but seriously I tried like a dozen things suggested all over the place on SO to no success because they were all flat out wrong.

@TravisJ We love fun. Occasionally. "We hate fun" is an exaggeration. The problem with not making that a general attitude however is that people will feel encouraged to post whatever they think is "fun" and excuse whatever issues it may have with "but it's just supposed to be fun".
The question there however is poor. Cute, well intended, great dad, but poor.

Yeah, I get that @Bart. I won't disagree with that fact that pure fun is a bad idea.

6:10 PM
is there an SO reddit? I have not "reddit"... as it were.

But why go and skewer it on meta?

What motivates the SJW or the Condo Association Retiree with Binoculars? Time... and the desire to fill it. :P

@TravisJ that ... is a question for the OP. I see no point in that. The community can handle it without meta involvement I'd say. The "undeserved" upvotes don't bother me really.
If anything, migrate it to code review. No longer our problem /s

Code review would **** all over that. Wait, are they nice over there?

Yeah, code review is much nicer
They actually try.
