Just use Stack Overflow Jobs to apply for a job for the first time. :P

Anonymous
Actually, I guess I used it to apply for the Stack Overflow job itself, but that's a bit of a special case.

I am failing high school maths - calculating cross section on a random triangle (non of the angles is 90 degree) for planning purposes is so damn hard. It's not impossible but there are so many more steps to go across if you do it by hand

@JeremyBanks let us know if it works

user202362
define 'works'

I think if someone starts paying you that's a reasonable test

Anonymous
I got a confirmation email so that's a start.

1:37 AM
lol
@Shog9 that's kinda the ideal, yes

@Telkitty can it lay eggs?
also, morning

4:35 AM
@Telkitty Is that what ended up coming of your tent?

user202362
tent is still not mailed - bought it on a massive sale, so expect delay on the mailing

double-check the color when it arrives!

user202362
Make friends: it's much easier to make friends with people who share your common interest/vision or goals, because then you have things to talk about. Also bonding is easier by spending time doing things you both enjoy

@Feeds Awww, it looks like Randall needs some IPS love.

You mean, like eating? For example.

user202362
you might not like the same cuisine

Well, they are stick figures... they probably don't eat much.

5:11 AM
So drinking then

user315433
@Feeds It seemed he had it figured out earlier,

user315433

See, those are clearly not the actions of a sober person.

... but... space facts are awesome.

We can't use the force from the sun to get us to other stars because solar wind stops outside of our solar system.
If we can capture the matter from when dark matter decays then we could potentially create a neutrino drive in deep space.
An ounce of dark matter is worth roughly 1 Septillion dollars.

omg tesla made a semi truck
It comes with a captains chair like from Star Trek, how cool would it be to outfit one with like rooms in the back and an observatory.

user202362
5:31 AM
would be awesome to be able to control the location of a black hole - send it close to your enemies and watching them passing the event horizon from distance ...

What enemies?

user202362
yep, building trucks not cars ... and mow down people faster ...

:( too soon
If you could control a black hole you would be Q

5:57 AM
lol "The canvas has been tainted by cross-origin data." chrome whines at me

user202362
my PC gave me a blue screen of death and restarted itself

Did it look at you in the eye, and then back at its feet, and then slowly give you the blue screen of death, as if to say "sorry, but well we were all talking and..."

user202362
it was quick and swift

the whining made me think of that sorority letter that superman villain read

6:26 AM
darn... I missed a chance to increase close review stat by 1 since I voted to close directly from the question :(
@SmokeDetector still need flaggg

sigh, I made this whole experiment using javascript canvas to debunk the idea that W is the pixel winner because it is only the widest letter but perhaps not the densest. W still won...
I had thought B might have a chance but no

How about M?

I can put an M together in a bit if you are curious
Takes a little bit of doing, gotta get the same font size, put it in an image, put it in the canvas, count the non whitespace
Once the writeup is finished I will include M and link it for you

oh, "not the densest"... I thought only "the widest"

W is definitely the widest
However, there was the post about which had more pixels
And so density came into play

erf, doesn't it also depend on font/typeface? anyway, I'll wait for the writeup :)

7:01 AM
It totally does, but this is using the font that SO is using so I got a break on that aspect

anyway, re: "I want to flag any post to get Marshall badge", I wanted to suggest to OP to join SOCVR and flag to close questions... dunno if it's a good idea or not :X

7:31 AM
@AndrewT. heh.
smokey's probably the easy way to do that these days

that's why SOCVR is still a good choice because spam on SO is reported there :p
(and I wonder, sometimes CMs and devs instantly come into this room after someone posts a message, as if there's a trigger to auto-join Tavern :x)

lol
If I knew anything about that, I probably couldn't talk about it. ;p
(personally I think its confirmation bias)
"If a CM or Dev joins a room, and there's no one to see it..."

I spy with my little eye

stackoverflow.com/a/47345527/1026459 . Okay so I made the post. M was close at 150 pixels, but W still won with 157 pixels.

W is for Width, but H cries because everyone ties on Height :(

7:43 AM
H wasn't a contender :P

btw, are the images anti-aliased?

Slightly, I took a screenshot of the screen and then cropped 3 separate images
The anti-aliased values are included in the data though. If you are curious, you can see the test fiddle I was using: jsfiddle.net/qv52f7et
It has a breakdown of the individual colors

I loaded chat to my last message, normally I find a bunch ...

8:29 AM
@Jaso
oh great, he's not pingable
:/

Haven't seen him in quite a bit

@Telkitty sharing the same concept of "friendship" helps a lot, too. It seems nowadays the most common definition is "temporary alliance based on common goals, ditch them as soon as you can find a more useful ally". This obviously doens't work well for people that have a more shonen-like vision.....

sugo----i! tano----shi!
wait, wrong friend...

9:04 AM
@Derpy I have a more ... classical interpretation of friendship
My friends are people who I enjoy spending time with and pursuing mutual hobbies with
While we do help each other out, the primary purpose isn't a "us vs the world" kind of thing but more of a social thing

9:20 AM
Different unregistered users but same gravatar???: 1, 2

@Magisch that was part of my point too. Even if you go for a more standard and less "social convenience based" definition, you still have a full spectrum of "how much I am willing to sacrifice". From the "play cards during recess at school" to the "the world government decided she doesn't deserve to live so I will declare war upon the world government".

9:42 AM
@AndrewT. perhaps the user name is used for the gravatar hash

DELETION IS MAGIC!

10:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek maybe @Bart or @ShadowWizard show up shortly ...

@rene or one of friendly neighbourhood devs, CMs or SREs ;p

We have to respect timezones ...

true
(though pretty sure that we at least have folks in americaland and zee eurozone...)

@JourneymanGeek thanks a lot.... Now I will have to live with that mental image of a Hello Neighbor mod that replaces the Neighbor with Oded/Shog. -_-'

@Derpy errr
theretheres @Derpy

11:04 AM
Could be an idea....
"Hello Shog: infiltrate the StackExchange headquarters to find out where they hide all the unicorn plushes without being caught by Shog".

@Derpy whatever sails your boat ...

@rene ^ I usually just change the wind direction.

:D

wonder... does that pinned SQL statement have any chance to get really executed if we can gather enough power stars moons stars?
You know.... Deletion by popular agreement? :P
(don't worry, I'm not trying to delete the room only flower, it is just that he is getting lazy so maybe if we scare him a little he will try to be more decorative)

11:27 AM
@Derpy yes.

1 hour later…
12:46 PM
I want to rage quiet

@Derpy decorative?! @rene is a important part of the room ecosystem

1:19 PM
@AndrewT. you want to rage quit, or rage quietly? :p

1:34 PM
apparently notifications don't work when editing a comment, so consider yourself pinged :p

well, let's give it a try.

@rene hmm?

yeah, you're late

We raised a complaint, they fired the staff? I assume it is not meant that way but that is a bit the message I got from that answer. Some editorial staff might try to reword that a bit ....

@rene I think you're reading it too deep...

That could be. Maybe it is my Friday grumpy mode

Hey @AdamLear thanks for handling my ticket Other - 201711041151010646 (I had some backlog in my gmail, so just saw it now)

@rene no problem

I wonder if I can break the record for ticket left unanswered the longest
Since shog is so busy now

pretty sure I have a ticket that's almost two years old... Though I did reply to it saying I wouldn't close it for a while.

@Magisch Dude has emails from the nineties he has yet to respond to. The nineties.

@Shog9 I'll remind you again next year :p
@TimPost Don't doubt that when you got the weight of a thousand bickering developers on your shoulders
thousand is probably a hopelessly optimistic estimate

4:47 PM
that NIN mailing list is gonna be sooo impressed when I finally give my opinions on "The Fragile"

For the security bug it's almost a good thing it's been open for so long
means it can't be a big deal

Or the business value / business risk is low

@rene colloquially called not a big deal
I'm trying the cato the elder tactic

"Blame everything on Cato the younger"

@Shog9 I was thinking more along the lines of saying something so often until people react eventually
You know the thing cato the elder is famous for, advocating destruction of carthage

4:59 PM
I've seen more than enough cases where a security hole switches from not a big deal to a boat sinker in a single incident.

@JohnDvorak Well I've reported it, if it ends up sinking SE it won't be my fault

Plays "Knock on Wood" like in Casablanca

user310756
9:54 PM
is it happy hour?

@YvetteColomb not yet, another hour of waiting...

user310756
@rene I'll try and make it

don't count on me ...

user310756
I haven't made it to one yet

user310756

user310756

user310756
11:02 PM
Well I finally made it to Happy hour. This is so boring. I'm here alone with a unicorn --which while this is pleasant, we often see each other in charcoal. No offence @smokes

user310756
hmmmmmm well I'm going now tippy toes out

@YvetteColomb I warned you :P

I already had one beer, I'm done
and I wanted to go to sleep before it became Saturday here ...

just finished my first whisky
clouds are floating by at a good clip out my window, lit from one side by the setting sun

user310756
@Catija I know!! lol I was thinking of what you said the other day

11:10 PM
a chill is settling on the house, deprived of direct sun for the past hour
and I'm researching detail sanders

How cold is it?

user310756
it's 10.10am here, I canna be drinking whiskey

@Shog9 first ... that means you're going to finish the bottle today?

yeah, gotta put it in your coffee that time of day
@rene well, probably. There's only about a shot left in it.
fortunately, I have 4 more bottles

user310756
lol

user310756
11:12 PM
well of interest. I've been watching cyber security videos

user310756
interesting

I never understood people using alcohol

Doctors find it quite useful.

user310756
on patients or to drink it?

... though, not usually for drinking while working.

user310756
11:13 PM
lol

user310756
my grand mother had her appendix taken out on a table at her house when she was a girl. I'm thinking alcohol was involved in that in some way

Yeah, without it you can't stand the smell of an infected appendix ...

user310756
lol

user310756
it may have been rubbing alcamahol

user310756
of interest I have a supervisor set up and plan to start my doctorate in July next year. Will be researching mobile app security

11:18 PM
@YvetteColomb as long as it is single malt, I'll take it

user310756
well you bunch are boring, no offence. :D

Posts like meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/359527/… make me doubt myself if I actually understand English at all.

@Stijn Thanks for sharing, that's a good one.

user310756
@Stijn nah, have the badge, am wearing the t-shirt :D (it's mah OCD with the little red indicators that the queues are overflowing)

user310756
@JeremyBanks but.. but what does it mean?

It looks like an automatic translation of something that was sloppy in the source language.

@YvetteColomb it was the best I could come up with

@rene there's a mod on the loose deleting our comments O>O quick run - hide

@JeremyBanks that is an insult for cannabis users ...
@YvetteColomb we captured the best parts here ;)

All I see are waffles.

user310756
It was Shogged

11:35 PM
I still haven't adjusted to the pronunciation "change".

user310756
@Shog9 why couldn't you have waited until happy hour finished, we were having fun?

... meaning in my head.

Shööged

user310756
@Catija what pronunciation change?

Anonymous
the beginning sounds like:
- email is effectively required to use many government services these days
- regular people usually only know how to sign up for a few major services like Google which usually ask for your phone number, therefore compromising their anonimity
- if somewhere on stack exchange, issues about email privacy/freedom are being discussed, the only people who can participate anonymously, which may be required in case their local governments are not in support of it, are technical users who know how to use anonymous services, therefore creating a bias in the voting on such q

user310756
11:37 PM
well I gotta go pick up my wee lassy (don't know why I've broken into a Scottish accent)

if you lose your keys, you can't decrypt your old emails

user310756
by the time I return this happiest hours will be over

user310756
bye all

well, have a weekend of sad hours then

Bye!

11:37 PM
enjoy!

user310756
lol

So is he saying that users who value anonymity are further disadvantaged in voting because they're more likely to have lost access to their account?

Anonymous
Maybe we could salvage this question. :P

Is it about SE?
Migrate it to MSE and I'll be able to see it :P

running to home depot, back later

11:39 PM
@JeremyBanks lost my keys is a reference to the Tim Post joke I think

@rene Yeah, but is that in response to a comment?
Usually it goes "Why is this downvoted?" ... "Tim lost his keys"... "???"

@Catija No, it was in the question, integral part of it

Anonymous
@rene sorry, which Tim Post joke?

Anonymous
@rene ah, so that suggests it's willfully nonsensical.

Anonymous
11:42 PM
thanks. I'd seen that before but didn't remember it.

It is awesome if you use it like @Catija suggests, to answer the why am I down voted comments.
