11:00 AM
also whoa. I just referenced a blog post from 09 in an answer on meta

Is anyone here a wizard with latex?

@Magisch there is a wizard here

@JourneymanGeek blog posts are eternal

@ShaWizDowArd I needed historical context on the flagging system ;p

11:02 AM
@redhand but no latex

@ShaWizDowArd as far as we know.

oops he is not wizard
it's wiz dow ard

I'm wondering why I need an extra package to have non-justified left aligned text
seems backwards

isn't there a latex se?

11:03 AM
yes

There is

tex n latex

@Magisch oh thought you meant this:
Latex rubber is used in many types of clothing. Rubber has traditionally been used in protective clothing, including gas masks and Wellington boots. Rubber is now generally being replaced in these application by plastics. Mackintoshes have traditionally been made from rubberized cloth. Latex rubber as a clothing material is common in fetish fashion and among BDSM practitioners, and is often seen worn at fetish clubs. Latex is sometimes also used by couturiers for its dramatic appearance. Latex clothing tends to be skin-tight. There are several magazines dedicated to the use and wearing of it. Less...

@ShaWizDowArd as far as we know...

@Henders the most recent town hall was the last scheduled one, now the CMs are going back and having a discussion about how it's going to proceed

11:05 AM
@angussidney how do you know?
@JourneymanGeek I know ;)

@ShaWizDowArd that's what shog said ;p

@ShaWizDowArd have a read of the conversation, bluefeet said it I think

@JourneymanGeek where?

I think at the end of the last one.

@JourneymanGeek yeah I'm moaning about needing a package to un-justify aligned text and the general topic is plastic clothing

11:07 AM
@Magisch rubber Fetish clothing.

@angussidney what conversation? All I see today is some random cat gifs from @Telkitty and some usual Tavern rant.

@ShaWizDowArd the chat bookmark conversation thingy for the last town hall that was pinned for a while, I don't have the link handy sorry
But I'm pretty sure it's going to continue, considering that bluefeet agreed to have them scheduled every now and then to be accesible to AEST folks and the like

@angussidney oh, they said it 2 weeks ago.... but we can't know if they are actually doing it now. For all we know, that "discussion about how it's going to proceed" can also take place next week, or in 2 weeks, etc.
@angussidney we'll see... :)

Everyone seemed to be pretty positive about it though, so I'm keeping my hopes up

@ShaWizDowArd If there's anything I've learned to expect from the CM team is that everything takes time
... a lot of time

@Magisch like I said, 6-8 weeks. :)

Wow. This coinhive thing is a new low
Now shady website operators aren't content to spam obtrusive ads. No they'll use your max CPU to mine monero for them while you're on their site
Extra extra extra monetising of your users

@Magisch I'm ashamed to tell that I read today about Israeli company that specialize in "monetizing apps". In other words, they do those spammy/shady things and hold 60% of the global market or so.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Manually reported answer: How to detect cancer in general? by user11413 on health.SE

They do like 1B dollars per year from this crap.

11:19 AM
Everything is monetized these days
can't have a decent profit. need ALL THE PROFIT RIGHT NOW or it's a failure

@Magisch exactly
aka greedy.

Have a reputation for not screwing your customers? You too can monetize that by screwing them harder until they catch on
Looking at you, bethesda

I don't think anyone is going to buy anything from the creation club

Hell, game companies have started monetizing your info too by forcing you to register for things and then they'll sell your details for marketing purposes
@angussidney Now I can have a whole new weapon texture for only 10$
horse armor wih less value

Well, PC gamers at least, considering that they can get vastly superior items/armour sets/whatevers as free mods

11:22 AM
@angussidney I hope they continue, they're pretty interesting!

@angussidney Next step: Treating modding as copyright infringement because it cuts down on DLC profits

@Henders me too
@Magisch shooting themselves in the foot in the process, because mods are the main drivers of sales of the game after the game is 5+ years old
And we know Bethesda isn't going to release a new game any time soon, other than ports of Skyrim/Fallout 4 to new platforms

@angussidney Nobody said it'll be a smart move
But the trend is towards more micro-monetisation and charging for what used to be cheat codes
So mods cut down on the amount of profit you can milk from players with gambling systems and buyable power in single player games

Have you just watched the same video that I watched earlier today? sounds like it :P

@Magisch Skyrim was dead to my eye the day they did the ninja patch update.

11:28 AM
@Telkitty that looks really good and tasty of course.

Sadly, when my old HD died, I lost most of my oblivion mods. I was starting some minor development with the creator tools to.
Now, I don't want to start again.
also, tesNexus is pretty malwertising filled nowadays from what I heard

@Derpy ublock origin on by default
only way to be semi-safe these days
And now some websites even use your browser to hijack your CPU to mine monero for them

@Magisch I use ublock too. best so far.

11:56 AM
@Magisch I use Policeman on firefox for now - that is a far worse level of paranoia. I probably will have to switch to chrome and the relative counterpart (don't remember the name now sorry) by the end of the month if the plugin architecture switch will really be as bad as I expect...
SHOULD be uMatrix, but take that with a grain of salt.

Tis a sad state of affairs that advertising online has gotten so bad that you essentially need to block it now lest you get tons of malware / adware / crapware shoved in your face
We had an issue like this a week ago on one of the company computers - someone had misclicked into one of those "download now" buttons that appear near legit downloads. Suddenly they had "14 viruses, buy premium now to clean" ware on their pc and their browser was redirecting every request to various affiliate sites with popup and pop under ads

@Magisch I am seriously considering switching to Qubes OS. Should I add more?

Basicly 40-60% of the 'web right now is "BUY OUR STUFF NOW YOU WANT THIS PREMIUM ULTRA SUPER STUFF NO WE WONT SHUT UP BUY NOW"

(and by the way it seems that some of the most paranoid users on Security and Ubuntu are indeed using Qubes OS)

buys stuff

@TheLittleNaruto I am glad you mean the cake and not the albatross, I was worried when I first saw your message ...

has anyone ever checked if the chat (by which I mean the infrastructure used by the chat to display and store images) is indeed vulnerable to a png bomb? That would once again prove that oneboxing everything isn't exaclty safe.
(Disclaimer: please, if you do - do it in a separate room created for the purpose after you warned the mods)

heh, dead link here:

too little paranoia

We found in a previous post that Python has a solid claim to being the fastest-growing programming language in terms of Stack Overflow visits.

The same analysis showed that that the R programming language has shown remarkable growth in the last five years as well. In fact, R is growing at a similar rate to Python in terms of a year-over-year percentage, though this growth is “easier” because it started from a smaller share of traffic.

In another post, we found that much of the growth of Python can be explained by the expansion of data science. Since R is primarily used for statistica …

can we expect self driving cars and robot tradies anytime soon?

1:39 PM
@Desire well, Stack Overflow data team must find something to do, no?
(and a way to show they do something)

@Telkitty It's all a conspiracy by toxoplasma gondii

user202362
pretty sure Stack overflow sells data, except weird person like me probably sits at the very tip of that bell curve

user202362
normal ppl sit in the middle

@Telkitty Which data?
I'd assume they mostly use the data themselves for SO careers

They can sell the list of posts Jon Skeet upvoted for lots of money. Classic collector stuff! ;)

The number of calculus students who think that sin(30) means sine multiplied by 30 is depressing.

user315433
One could try to explain that "sine" multiplied by "30" does not make any sense. Problem is, from the student's point of view this is no different from everything else in math.

user315433
And of course if one actually relies on that acronym for the order of operations, then 3-1+2 is 0 for them.

"The Impressive Growth of R" is also featured on English Language & Usage. Is it growing to be bigger than Q and S?

Forever is a long time

No, not never but not in my lifetime either ....

A chat data explorer would be interesting

yeah, that FR is already out there

3:57 PM
Plus a real chat API that's maintained by SE themselves instead of cobbled together by the community...

I recalled @JasonC was working on a scraper

Would probably make Smokey more reliable :p

What happened to JasonC anyway?

So would SE hosting metasmoke, TBH.

@JourneymanGeek I dunno, work I think

3:58 PM
@rene ah, good
heh, he seemed like the sort who might quietly wander off and silent ragequit...
(But so would I sooooo ;p)

Yes, I think he already did that once

@Mithrandir eh. are you telling me you can't get good hosting in this community? ;p

well, not silent really

Silent
;p
I usually just quit being a mod for personal reasons and drift off when I quit a place.

@JourneymanGeek Undo keeps having problems, it's been mostly down last few days

4:00 PM
(I keep getting made a mod. Heaven knows why)

before anyone wants to take over that stuff, it needs to be documented, cleaned-up and a solid devops manual.

Also wouldn't quite fit neatly into SE's current setup
(since I suppose that's linux and... I donno what its in, python?)

Too much well meant attempts at the moment, no really guidance/goal/organized effort

I like that

I just call it "2017 topbar"

Yeah.
I don't think there's one network wide, sorry.
At least as far as I'm aware.

user315433
Possibly. But clicking the rep icon loads something, so I'm just looking for a way to load that thing directly.

@Desire /topbar/achievements but you'll be missing styling

Hey guys, do you think this would be a good fit on Workplace.SE: "My employer has released a new feature, that has been universally criticized and lampooned by the users. Privately, I agree with the criticism, but my employer has asked us to sing its praises in all customer interactions, because this feature draws attention to some obscure features and will supposedly bring more revenue. How should I negotiate this situation?"

@gnat .... Yeah, that's not overtly obvious.

user315433
Yeah, but the issue of white topbar privilege is systemic.

Though, I'm pretty sure that he's not employed by SE.

@AdamLear Yeah... it was a joke. I was actually talking to him earlier about his complaint.

Braver... dumber... you know. I like you all and I think you do amazing things. I don't really like seeing people make blanket statements about how you don't care about the users... I've also never seen him before, so there may be some back story there I'm missing.
