@Derpy Jon hasn't been around for a while, he didn't even reply to a ping in his Office room. (and in few days he won't be pingable there at all...)

@ShadowWizard StackExchange moderation strange is, my young padwan.

@ShadowWizard that seems slightly ominous.

Actually, it plays a great part in the plot of the TV adaptation of the two books "The colour of Magic" and "The light fantastic"
One of the wizard was found deceased in a sealed from the outside room. All the opening had been closed, so... no air.
They deduce that the wizard must clearly have committed suicide.

@JourneymanGeek just slightly, yep
And your job? Less ominous? @Journeyman ;)

10:37 AM
Hmm. More so
I just got told the full extent of how messed up things are.

I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was Chou. Soon I awaked, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man.

If measuring reality actually changes that reality, then there is no way to accurately measure reality.

Site milestone: Chess has been in public beta for 5 years, since 2012-05-15. The growth is very slow, and may even be flattening out. The most-viewed question: With only a king left, how many moves remaining until a draw?

user315433
I never heard about that rule until now.

@Gerry what rule?
Forced draw when only a king is left?
I think that when I used to play at school they told me it's 3, and had a special name.

user315433
I think 3 is the number of times a position is repeated.

2:07 PM
oh, might be
It's all blurred...

user315433
I wonder if it matters if two identical pieces (for example, two knights) trade places when the position is repeated. Hmm.

user315433
> Positions [...] are considered the same, if the same player has the move, pieces of the same kind and color occupy the same squares, and the possible moves of all the pieces of both players are the same.

user315433
Apparently, it does not matter.

user315433
Hm, that clause about possible moves... if it's the same position and the same player has the move, how could the possible moves be different? I think the only case is when a rook or the king moved and then returned to its place, and now you can't castle.

I’m Donna Choi, and I’m the Product Designer for the Stack Overflow Jobs team.

I’d like to revisit and share with you our standards for developing Jobs. These are living standards—we’re constantly rethinking our approach as we talk to users about what kind of product would help them most.

For a little more context: part of my job involves listening to people talk about their job search. Over the last 2 years, I’ve heard developers all over the world talk about why they leave a job, what makes them happy, what frustrates them, and what they hope to find. We just finished a big research project ab …

I don't mean to be offensive but I seem to have missed a memo: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/296029/…
Is there something public on MSE that mods can see the down voter?

user315433
6:17 PM
Mods can see some summary stats regarding the votes received by a user. That may include the top voters by that measure.

@ShadowWizard @JNat That user wasn't a spammer. The main site profile was self-deleted back in September and apparently something fell over and the meta profile didn't get removed as it should've been. Not much point in trying to figure out what since that happened nearly 8 months ago. If there was a major bug, we'd hear about it by now in other cases. (I hope :))

@Gerry but that would mean every user has a top down-voter? In that case the statement: votes are anonymous is no longer true, no matter how much you try to hide behind stats

6:48 PM
If the username is anonymized, then I guess it's still anonymous.
Don't know about the detail, but I think I have read it somewhere that mods do have tool to analyze voting pattern

user315433
@rene The statement "votes are anonymous" was never true.

user315433
Or rather, it is an oversimplification of the state of things.

@Gerry for non-developers I assumed it to be true.
@Gerry Ok, maybe I hoped the world was simple.

@AdamLear self delete you mean with a button, or requested deletion and a CM actually deleted the account?

@Gerry It seems to have attracted SE staff attention and I now got three comments of them, all kind of supporting your POV. I stand corrected.

6:56 PM
@ShadowWizard most deletes are self-serve via "contact us"

@AdamLear but not automatic, right? This can be done only when there's no activity in the account.

Depends on how you define automatic.
There's no employee involvement unless the user is high rep or has a lot of voting activity.

@AdamLear click of a button, without any email or contact form (which requires employee to read it and act)

no, contact form doesn't require an employee for deletions :)
or merges, for that matter
when you request deletion, we send you an email with a confirmation link. you click it. that starts a 24-hour "scheduled deletion" timer during which you can still take it all back. after that, the profile is deleted.

@AdamLear oh, that's neat!
Was sure there's a human starting that 24 hours countdown process.
(on your end)

6:59 PM
only for high rep/lots of votes cases. those get some oversight.
the "delete profile" button on new profiles takes effect immediately, like it always has, though

Q: Why do beta sites typically launch on Tuesday?

EmrakulIn an answer on Area 51, Robert Cartaino mentions that beta sites usually launch on a Tuesday. A cursory review of beta site history seems to show that, somewhat surprisingly, this is actually true. I've, uh, gotta wonder why? I'm honestly just curious. It's probably some boring internal reason,...

@rene me

7:14 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if they package a new site as an MSI, send it to Microsoft and then have it deployed via Windows Update
hence the Tuesday

Network Engineering went into public beta 4 years ago today. Most viewed question: How do you calculate the prefix, network, subnet, and host numbers?. Math is hard, especially with logarithms.

user315433
If people learn logarithms before they are fully ready, they may be seduced by their dark side: the belief that multiplication and addition are interchangeable in any formula with "log" in it.
