SQL should be title case, for formal occasions

user315433
Seriously, I don't know how everyone had time to bother with hats and ties and whatnot in mid-century.

user315433
Maybe it's because they didn't have internet.

I don't know how anyone has time to bother with ties today. Seriously, if I wanted to learn to tie knots on a whim, I'd have joined the navy.

cause they didn't have internet.
@Shog9 my job before this one had an issued tie. Never wore it.

My job before this issued me one tie. I tied it once, and hung it over a candlestick.

1:34 AM
non optional button down shirts also suck (and this job's formalish. Which is totally why I'm wearing my Software Recs Tshirt on casual friday)

So my first experience with posting on SO (ignoring the new-user block) wasn't all that bad. While it's true that I got one downvote (but really, who cares?), I also got a very quick and correct answer.

yeah, that's a smart thing to do.
@Shokhet as should be ;)

user315433
I wore suit and tie to class everyday for one semester, when the class size was over 230 and I was on a kind of a stage in a theater-looking classroom.

@Shokhet honestly, I'm just impressed that you found this chat room. If that wasn't so rare, I'd argue it should grant a free question in and of itself.

user315433
Fortunately, didn't have this kind of class since.

1:36 AM
@Aibobot I'd never posted on SO before (I'd never had cause too). I was somewhat nervous-ish because of that site's reputation around the network

@Gerry I hope you also performed live dissections.

lol. @Shog9 it is. Also, one of the better places to work out what's going on.

Wait, there's a term for live dissection

@Shokhet (oh, FWIW, its Journeyman Geek)

user315433
Of math formulas, yes.

1:37 AM
@Shog9 I've been in here before.

@Shog9 vivisection?

Just never on SO

YES
I hope you performed vivisection.
If I ever found myself performing for a crowd of hundreds in a theater, I would hope I would have the presence of mind to perform at least one vivisection.

@Aibobot Who is Journeyman Geek?

Yes, I've seen you around the network. You're usually in the Superuser chat room, right?

yup, Mod there + vaguely famous on that site.

1:40 AM
@Gerry True enough 😳

@Gerry math is hard, but that needs brackets.

order of operations

hm. I thought for some reason, division and multiplication are roughly the same order

@Shog9 Yes, yes, can we all just stop pointing out my mistake? I accepted the answer already! :)

user315433
Yes. But they think of / as the division line between numerator and denominator.

1:42 AM
I didn't read your question, I'm just typing words as a habit.

erf. Over != division

user202362
x/2*y does not produce undefined behaviour, if you have forgotten brackets, it's your own fault

@Shog9 Fair enough.
The problem with my code (trying to write a program on my calculator) was an order of operations problem.
...I'm usually careful with parentheses. I guess I got lazy using the graphing calculator, which can show fractions with multiple terms in the numerator/denominator, so I don't have to worry about it. The programming feature on the calculator doesn't do that.

@Shokhet better to abuse brackets ;p

@Aibobot Right. I will do that in the future :)

Yeah, I just did a dual major in computer forensics, information security & management, and management

@Aibobot Wow.

I'm thinking about a CS minor, but I have another semester or two until I have time for elective classes...

Jeff Atwood on August 05, 2010

Our “third place”, after a successful three day beta preview, is now on the final path to launch.

What is this mythical third place I speak of?

Because you not only need a place to have intelligent Q&A; about managing your finances, you need a place to talk about the place, and a less formal “third place” to collaborate in real time with the fellow members of your community.

This is a permanent public beta, meaning chat is now live on one site in our network … forever. We plan to roll out out chat on more sites in about 4 weeks, assuming the public beta goes reasonably well. …

and cause I'm cool like that...
Jeff Atwood on September 10, 2010

As promised, we are slowly rolling out the third place across our network.

We started with chat.meta.stackoverflow, and as previously announced on the Server Fault blog, we now have chat.serverfault.com.

You may remember we rolled out per-site metas across the entire Stack Exchange network, as well as for Server Fault and Super User, back in July. So from our perspective, we’re completing the experience:

chat.serverfault.com is still a public beta, but we’re rapidly closing in on release status. I expect we’ll begin a fairly aggressive rollout of chat across all sites within 4 w …

chat.SF was second
and for additional historical relevance...
Jeff Atwood on April 29, 2010

When people ask me what mistakes we made in building Stack Overflow, near the top of the list is not acknowledging the need for a meta-discussion site earlier. That is, a place for people to discuss Stack Overflow itself.

I resisted this for the longest time, relegating meta topics to UserVoice, because I didn’t see much value in meta-discussion. But then I finally bowed to community pressure and created meta.stackoverflow.com a little less than a year ago.

Owning our own meta, rather than outsourcing it, has been hugely productive in evolving the engine and the trilogy sites forward. The community was right, and I was so very, very wrong. …

So that maybe folks in the review queue would stop approving gnat's busted dupes.

Didn't even recognize it
@JasonC I, for one, have been approving those duplications because it's a good read people surely haven't given a read and I don't think of duplication to be like closure

I don't think of duplication to be like closure either but it's not even a good sign post.
Also gnat's addicted to that question. List of first CV voters as dupes of that question.
Anyways I'm not gonna reopen questions or anything like that. I just felt like folks were basing most of their reviews off the title alone. So it's got a clearer title now. The rest is fate.

@JasonC Huh, why am I not in that list? O.o

@Feeds "it's probably for the best that they don't enable chat" is remarkably timely.

Not only is it not a dupe but the answers in the fourth place post don't even make sense for it. Actually most of the fourth place post answers support the idea of adding subjective subdomains, so it doesn't even make any sense to a reader.

Michał PerłakowskiCurrently, the flag ban notice in the flag summary page looks like that: You are currently banned from flagging - view flags declined in the last 7 days It looks as if I was banned from flagging anything, but in fact I'm only banned from flagging posts; I can still flag comments (I assume...

@Gerry Wouldn't that be awesome? An SE style platform where the oval office answers.

user315433
Yes, you'll be the moderator there.

It'd be a slight change from the normal philosophy to make it worthwhile, I think, though. Mostly because you'd really want "verified" users, or limit answering to official sources only, which is wholly against the general "no user gets special credibility" thing.
Otherwise it's just the politics site.
I think it could work more as a SE-powered site rather than being an official part of the network.

user315433
united-states is the second most popular tag on Skeptics, where answers must be backed up by reliable sources. They have [politics] tag too. Not to mention [donald-trump].

user315433
However, the questions must be something that's asserted in a notable source, not just something a user is wondering about.

Yeah but that's different. There's tons of places, SE and not, to get other normal people to give good credible answers backed up by sources.
It would be cool to talk to the white house directly, though, that's what a site like that would have to add.
A city based one would be cool, too, as a platform for the public to raise issues to the mayor's office.
Esp. in cities like NYC.
Maybe users could get a little special icon if they verified residence in the city. And city officials could get icons, too. I don't know who would moderate, though. It'd have to stay unbiased.

"I run my own business " Many people advised me recently to just do that. But I'm seriously lacking marketing, sales and leadership skills.
I could think about steering all that technical stuff, but I don't have people I could trust doing all that other needs to be done for a successful business. I'm a bit lost it seems :-/ .
@rene I'd love to start a private chat about that with you, but I'm afraid we have to wait until tomorrw.

@πάνταῥεῖ you know there's no such thing as private chat in SE, unless started by a moderator
(which can indeed create private chat rooms)
(but don't think they should be used for non SE stuff.)

HAPPY HOUR
I need some happy. Two G&Ts is a good start.

Maybe. Another reason could be anti-roboreviewing campaign.

user315433
People don't appreciate robo-reviewers enough. They are what keeps Suggested Edits and some similar queue moving.

user315433
Most edits are good and should be approved. The minority that cause some noticeable harm are rolled back.

sigh... time to stop messing around & answer that

user315433
Edit privilege could be at 1000 or even 500 rep. And raising the number of reviews for suggested edits to 3 is of unclear benefit at the 50% greater reviewing effort.

That last one is the magic bullet here. We did that because of complaints about edits getting approved too quickly; since then we've made changes to serialize reviews and allow author-overrides, which mostly solve the problem with less work required from reviewers.

user315433
I don't know if author-overrides have actually had impact yet... nobody ever edits my posts.
