Q: How are profile views counted?

UNNIThis is related to the 'number of times your profile is visited by others'. How exactly does it work? For example, in my profile page, profile view count is 171.

@Fawad ^

I know my account weirdness is an exciting event in the Tavern, haha.

@JasonC sure is!
Though the "hammertime!" was more exciting.

@JasonC can you create a new account just to check what will be your username,about me section on other site.

HAMMERTIME err.. something like that.

Try signing up on Arts & Crafts, and see what happens...

@Fawad I could and that would not be a bad test, but I'm not because 1) I know what it should be, although of course that doesn't mean that it actually will be correct, but more importantly, 2) I don't want to touch anything with my accounts or profiles right now until this is resolved, because I don't want to confuse any investigations.
@Mithrandir ^ I'm not going to touch anything for the time being. No new accounts, no profile edits, no tests.
It's already confusing enough.

Okay, fine. If you want me to check anything else on your profile, give me a ping.

Try going to sleep, maybe it's all just a bad dream. ;)

@Mithrandir Thanks I really appreciate all your help here.

JasonC pinching to test sleep

2:05 PM
Lol
Nope. I'm awake. Or pinching myself has become part of my dreams.
@ShadowWizard Lamest nightmare ever. "HOLY CRAP, I JUST HAD THIS NIGHTMARE WHERE SOMEBODY UPVOTED A POST AND IT LOOKED LIKE I DID IT."
"AND THEN I REALIZED I WASN'T WEARING ANY PANTS."

@JasonC it can oscillate... Next thing you know, that somebody can post on your behalf in chat.... :D

Cats don't wear usually…

@Fawad but they're walking on four legs.
Private parts are hidden. ;)

"I know I'm not wearing pants, officer, but look, I'm crawling on all fours, so it's OK. Hey... what're you doing with those handcuffs?"

2:10 PM

@Fawad right, because I deleted the message.
Only the message author, room owners, and moderators can see the history of deleted chat messages.

2:25 PM
@JasonC - not seeing a smoking gun anywhere. Still digging.

@Oded think it's best to focus on that upvote, as it's the most critical thing so far. Can you see any details about it?

"It's a vote ... in the upward direction"

I suppose I can write up an answer to avoid having people check things I already checked...

@Mithrandir valid reason, go ahead! :)

2:32 PM
I've been updating the post with a small subset of the things you've discovered, fwiw.

There is a record of you updating the "about me" section - not long after the user was created on the site.

@Mithrandir noticed something.... uncommon... on your network profile. You got accounts on all Stack Exchange sites and visited all of them today?

There's another use case for this script. The retrieval of the flag summary counts as a site visit for the Enthousiast & Fanatic badges. You just have to visit the global flag summary once a day. — Glorfindel Jan 11 at 8:33

Not very uncommon to have many accounts, but visiting all of them every day is not. :)

I just visited my flag summary ;)

2:35 PM
@Mithrandir whoa... so it's screen scraping this on all sites?

@Oded We found that. On March 2nd. It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. On the 1st I did a global profile update via MSE. On the 3rd I did one via SO. I never accessed the edit profile page on Literature.

Careful not to appear as DDoSing SE....

@Oded The March 2nd update could be the same as the global update on the 1st or 3rd due to time-zoney things but regardless I never visited the Literature edit profile page, didn't do a manual update there, and so there's nothing to explain the avatar / username / private info being different.

@Oded maybe check if another account was created in the exact same moment as when Jason appeared to edit his "about me" section? Hopefully, this will reveal the ghost account...

The edit you see, best case, is the result of the MSE/SO global edit I did.

2:38 PM
@JasonC My room mate gets away with that all the time

(Note, btw, that I'm only presuming I did a global profile edit on the 1st/3rd. That's from my browser history. I do recall updating my global profile relatively recently I just don't remember when, and I'm assuming it's why I visited those pages on my history. But, either way, it doesn't make the literature profile less mysterious.)

Can I publicly include the link to the credential that was added on Mar 3 (that, incidentally, is giving me a Page Not Found), @JasonC?

Sure, I don't see why not.
I can confirm that that at least has nothing to do with Metasmoke, I dunno how authorizing apps works or if it's related to those credentials but I do know my Metasmoke autoflag authorization was given at least a week prior to that.

@Mithrandir you already did here, so it doesn't really matter. :)

I can see a record of you (today, 3 hours ago) accessing that question. And 10 seconds later an upvote on that answer. Slip of the mouse?

2:42 PM
@JourneymanGeek your room mate goes without pants, on all fours? o_O

@ShadowWizard yes

2 seconds later, an upvote on the comment there, @JasonC.

Wearing a dog collar

Logs are consistent in regards to it being you, having the same IP address and user agent.

@Oded That isn't me. I visited that question from my browser at exactly 10:11:41 AM GMT -0400, to investigate the new upvote reported on my profile activity page. Prior to that I did not visit it, my memory and my browser history confirms that.
So the fact that it's showing my IP for that is an indicator of something seriously weird on your end.

2:44 PM
@ShadowWizard my room mate is a dog ;p

@Oded no way this can be spoofed?
@JourneymanGeek oh. I was starting to worry..... :P

@JasonC someone did that, an hour and a half earlier to what your logs say.

photos.google.com/photo/… this is not a face that wears pants

@Oded Yup. That's the big mystery here.

> 404. That’s an error.

> The requested URL was not found on this server. That’s all we know.

A: I seem to be sharing a login with somebody else on at least one site

MithrandirHere's a list of things I checked. Maybe someone can find something with it. IPs Your Ip Your IP has not changed on Literature since you registered the account, and there have been no other IPs that used your account. I had a Stack Overflow moderator check the IP info for your account - yo...

2:47 PM
I'm such an idiot.

Your real name is there @JourneymanGeek - if you don't want it to be forever accessible, delete the message. :)

@Oded Stop what you're doing for one second. I totally made that upvote. I remember doing it now. Everything else weird about the account holds. But wait.

@ShadowWizard my real name's public in a few places so meh

Hah.

2:48 PM
@Mithrandir Yeah no I did do that. Through Firefox after seeing it in chat. And total lack of sleep last night erased it from my memory.

@JourneymanGeek oh, lol

In regards to the profile strangeness - probably something transient where the profile data didn't copy to the profile on literature.

Everything else is only the wrong name and avatar, right? @Jason
@Adam said he's looking into it again, though it was few weeks ago.

Anonymous
:P

Adam is out this week, so...

2:50 PM
Hey, keep that tongue inside, @Jeremy! :D

@Mithrandir @Oded The only thing weird about it is the avatar, user display name, and blank private info. I've reverted that post back to my original report without mentioning the "mystery" upvote. Super sorry about any time you wasted digging into the upvote thing.

@Oded oh no...

@JasonC no worries. Glad to hear it isn't us... cause that would be a real worry.

It's when Mithrandir mentioned it was a person claiming to be a professional author. Then the memory came back.

2:52 PM
Yeah so, about this:
4 hours ago, by Jason C
And also it's 7:30 AM and I haven't slept yet. So my brain is just thinking of random weird crap.
It's bed time. I'll be back later. Thanks all. Peace.

Like I said - the issue where things didn't copy over? That might be due to you having some custom profiles (that are different from what you have everywhere else). But... not digging into that right now :)

@JasonC you use online money (say pay pal) so someone should hack? If someone hack your account then what would be possible reason for it?

I sometimes upvote something by mistake with my sock, then I must remember not to upvote it with my main account as well. :/

@ShadowWizard I mainly use my sock to troll people who use kali and downvote answers ;p

Naughty sock!

2:55 PM
Don't worry,I respect programmers and their choice.

Well, the good thing is, I got practice with the mod tools ;P

Hi @Stijn ,long time no see

quite literally everyone knows about it, and it was handy at my last job, where I did not want to log into a potentially compromised PC with a mod account ;p

@Fawad sup
I'm here most days :p

2:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek lol... just careful not to vote twice.... ;)

Your sock posted an answer with 250 upvotes. Cool...

@JourneymanGeek good call!

@Mithrandir I posted two lines for a question I saw on my phone, and went home to see it hit HNQ
That's my second most upvoted post network wide and most upvoted post on SU ;p

@JourneymanGeek must have been a good feeling.... :D

@ShadowWizard more like "What the hell? THIS IS CRAPPY!!! AND THIS IS A LOW REP SOCK..."
and went and edited in an image

3:00 PM
lol
Similar thing happened to me here, minus the sock - didn't expect so many upvotes. But the question became HNQ and votes just rushed in. lol

Oh I've had that happen a few times

@ShadowWizard one thing you can do is,add comment saying: don't vote,this account is sock.
But you were happy with votes I guess

If we're doing our HNQ success stories, mine is only at 71.

Or ask for any mod to lock post

@Fawad hehe, well my case wasn't a sock, but such comment won't be a good idea. :)

3:05 PM
Mine is 20

@Mithrandir longer than both mine and @JourneymanGeek's sock answers.... ;)

@ShadowWizard more work but less votes :O

yup
So unfair

Eh. It's the top answer on the site ;)

He talks so much^ =_=

@Fawad why you want to report that question?? It's totally legit.

3:10 PM
Without the <>s. Also, not a good idea to fool around with reports - it blacklists the user when you report.

Don't abuse Smoke Detector, it's not a game or fun bot!
(so IMO you should not get privileges.)
@SmokeDetector gone

Anyway, think manually reported posts always end up here, even if already deleted.
Is this correct? @angussidney @hichris123

1) am I in blacklist 2) do I need to worry?

@Fawad 1) No. 2) No.

@Fawad 1.) Probably not. 2.) Only if you abuse the bot.

@Mithrandir User is not blacklisted (340369 on meta.stackexchange.com).

So nope, you're not blacklisted, as expected.

3:14 PM
@Mithrandir well, worst case he just won't get privileges, he can't do any harm except flood the Tavern. In which case, RO can kick.

@Mithrandir thanks, that will do too. :)
One more close vote needed, then I can vote to delete.

WTH? Someone upvoted?

@ShadowWizard how about migrating question?

@Fawad Rule 1.) of migrating: Don't migrate crap.

At least adding comment to ask on suitable site?
He may don't know on which site to ask

user315433
When m0sa wrote that he needs a bosse, did he mean "an African tree (Guarea cedrata) having glabrous oblong pointed leaflets and small blue flowers"? I imagine that is hard to get, which is probably why the crowdcrafting thing went essentially unused.

@Fawad what @Mithrandir said. :)

@ShadowWizard needs one more delete vote. Maybe @Bart is around? If not then lurking ...

@NormalHuman I think he meant boose. Not sure enough to edit. :)
@rene how rude of Bart, not to be here when we need him! :D
@Fawad what are you talking about?

@Fawad it's a bot.

3:44 PM
@Bart not even a bot, technically. ;)

True, but close enough for these purposes

@Community alive?
:/
You keep leaving and coming back @Mithrandir why not just leave a tab open? :)

I did...
I was just out.
Like, out of the house.

@Mithrandir so you turn off the computer when leaving the house?

No, just close all the tabs...

3:48 PM
oh. Good!
Anyway, I'm under attack by air force!
:P

Eh, those are all over my house...

(it's bigger than it looks like in the picture. Really big.)
@Mithrandir oh my... thought they're only drawn to open water sources?

They bob around, get killed, respawn...

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Manually reported answer: Donald Grump code not working by potatoes on codereview.SE

@ShadowWizard So you know how I always complain that everybody I work with is sucks at their jobs?
"You're going to want to bring a qualified C++ programmer on board." "Ok, got one. Check." Then I receive this email:
Hi Jason,

I'm working on checking out your proof of concept, but it's not wanting to compile. The errors make me think that I'm missing something very straight forward, like a library that would need to be included, or something. Both errors are on the same line, and you can see the error descriptions in the screenshot. Any insights you might be able to provide would be appreciated!
With attached screenshot:
facepalm
I should tell him to go ask on SO then sit back and watch him get torn to shreds.
The next email (not worth pasting) he sent was just as trivial.

user315433
6:04 PM
I would complain about the formula with something / 4.0 * 2.0 * 3.14

user315433
It looks like someone forgot parentheses, because too many people do.

No
It's undeclared identifier: sin
It's just missing a #include <cmath>. Windows -> Mac header difference. Mistake on my part, but should've been solvable ... instantly.
I forgot to tell him to add using std::sin; in my reply. I expect that one in the next email.

user315433
I understand what compiler complains about; my point is, people could also be unhappy about the way the formula is written.

I'm equally unhappy about the way the formula is written. But it's not a compiler error, it's just ugly.

user315433
when I see a student writing x/2*y it's a 50-50 guess what they really meant.

6:11 PM
Point being this guy is a "qualified C++ programmer". And he's asking me questions about C++ standard library includes, and seems to have zero deductive reasoning and/or google skills. And the entire point of bringing him on was to offload a project that I don't have time for. This is going to be a long project.

user315433
Yeah, that's sad.

And about the types of errors you'd totally expect to see when compiling a hastily built project originally compiled on Windows on a Mac.

I feel for you. You thought you were gonna have help; you'll be lucky to get half as much done as you did alone.

Evidence is lending support to "I'm the only C++ programmer in Brooklyn". :/

Something I've done before: require all questions to be answered on the phone, while screensharing. You just break their questions down into smaller questions, asked back to them, that force them to research the answer.
Yeah, it's a huge time-suck for a few days... But then you magically get a lot fewer questions.

user315433
6:16 PM
s/phone/hangout/ ?

hangouts would work pretty well

That's not a bad idea at all. On one hand I don't want to be a programming tutor, but on the other hand it's inevitable here and that'd improve his skills in the long run. I think I'll do that.

think of it like pair programming, except without the temptation to just push the newb out of the way and do it for them.

Yeah totally.
Sweet. Now I'm kinda looking forward to his next question to test this out.

Now just hope there isn't a language barrier

6:19 PM
Polls in English class.

@NormalHuman why? That's pretty basic order of operations..

@Shog9 Heh. His name is "Ben Johnson" and his Google avatar shows a white guy with square hipster glasses holding a latte. I think I'm safe.
I'm sorry, that was prejudice. It might not be a latte.

24 hours later, Ben knows little more C++ while Jason has learned the traits of 23 previously-unknown strains of kale

:'(

user315433
@ɥʇǝS There's a 50% chance they are thinking of a fraction with x in the numerator and 2*y in the denominator. Can't do horizontal division line in code, but / is there, so...

6:23 PM
He replied: "That seems to have resolved the crashes. Thanks!" -- "crashes"...

user315433
Crashes, but not burns.

@NormalHuman I.. guess that makes sense? I dunno it just seems so basic.
I admit to having done it before but one run of my code/equation/whatever and I realized my mistake.

user315433
@bjb568 The real question is, is there a correlation between duck/horses and tab/spaces preferences.

tabs are just duck-typed spaces

> My compiler crashed with the error "undeclared identifier: x". Plz help.
@bjb568 The real question is whether the multiple choice list on that paper is indented with tabs or spaces.
How aggressive are duck-sized horses?

user315433
6:31 PM

user315433
Horses are loo large here.

Lol

@JasonC it's on the whiteboard

Oh sorry I thought it was written on paper. I guess tabs vs spaces makes no sense on a whiteboard. Derp.

user315433
Unless it's a smart whiteboard, maybe. The sort that tracks your stylus thing (or a finger) and changes the projected image accordingly... Never used one. Does your school have those, @bjb568?

6:44 PM
Lol, no. They'd use blackboard if given the chance. When they update technology it's always a downgrade.

Why are we using Windows 8 when Windows 98 is out? We're so behind!

Windows 11 should resolve this confusion by adopting the name, The New Windows.

The New Windows, The Newer Windows, The Newest Windows, ???, profit.

Be sure to alternate removing and adding the start menu for best profits.

What did Windows NT stand for?

6:54 PM
New Technology?

that ^
But I guess that question was rhetorical

So if it was New back then, what are we talking about The New Windows?

New New Windows™*

@ɥʇǝS ;P
Can someone advice what the best response, if any, would be on this‌? I know I'm to blame to answer something that should maybe have been left unanswered.

@rene "everyone hates cPanel and you've inadvertently ripped the scabs off of old wounds that are now draining pus and blood and bad memories"

7:08 PM
TIL PICNIC

@Shog9 that will do, thanks ...

user315433
7:24 PM
@rene I wonder if DevOps would be the site for that? No extant questions of this kind, but my general impression of that site was "how to admin something without a license".

hmm, let me check that
@NormalHuman I'm not sure if it will fly there. There is not enough Dev in that question and the answer to achieve what the OP needs is not enough Ops.
I think if that question gets framed to be about a rewrite rule in .htaccess it might fly on SU. But the OP needs to re-work their question to include what they tried or even if that could work for them.

7:49 PM
Is there an A/B test going on for the top-bar? meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/345742/…

user315433
The user has 492 rep, perhaps dropped under 500 and lost access to review.

user315433
But I don't know if the review icon is there for 500+ rep users or 100+ rep users; I have replaced all SE navigation long ago, and never used the new bar.

@NormalHuman as always, you're right.

8:41 PM
That error from earlier is kinda funny. When did GCC start trying to be so helpful?
It found an undeclared identifier, tried to find a close match, and then amusingly proceeded to generate a compiler error for its hypothesized match.
It's channeling Clippy.

9:17 PM
what to do about a huge number of odd/abusive edits? stackoverflow.com/users/7275984/… they've been throwing a ton of soft hyphens in a bunch of posts over the last couple hours. I flagged one question for a mod, but is it worth going through and rolling each back manually?

9:34 PM
@PaulCrovella I see @bluefeet already dupe voted the other post on MSO so I assume they are on it.

@JasonC well... eh... blush... must admit, can't see the problem either (looks like he was right, some math library is missing for sin function). But for my defence, I'm not C++ programmer. o_o

@PaulCrovella let's wait what the proposed action is. I think in these cases devs fiddle with the database

@PaulCrovella yeah, flag is correct action, such a user should be suspended for abusing their power.

@ShadowWizard Consider it to be the C++ equivalent of your new "experienced JavaScript programmer" sending you an email asking how to fix Uncaught ReferenceError: jQuery is undefined.

okay, thanks all

9:40 PM
@JasonC so he just failed to include some trivial library?

Ish.

But isn't it part of the project anyway?

as;lkdjflkgdsa;kjfasdlkjf

I mean, what exactly did you send him?
@JasonC hello @Jason's cat!

Your mom.

9:41 PM

hi ;;;;' and welcome to the Tavern!
Hope @Jason is taking good care of you, ;;;;'!

Don't tell me you envy @Jason's cats? @bjb568

There's something to be said for kats that get milked.

1 hour later…
11:20 PM
Consider for potential reopening: stackoverflow.com/q/42939601 I don't want to hammer it open, seems rude.

11:58 PM
@JasonC considering it was closehammered, not particularly
