"Make XXXXX great again" is truly a slogan for idiots, like most slogans that appear for your emotions. It's like your teacher saying 'there is an assignment' without telling your a deadline. And how do you define great??

I wasn't extremely keen on this guided wildness walk in Tasmania, only put down my name on the waiting list because it's in the total wildness, it's safe because of the people who organized it are experienced and I have walked with half of the people in the team and think they are great. But a few days after I put my name down the waiting list (team was already full), the organizer asked me whether I would like to be on the team.

aren't users entitled to vote by dice roll?
I seem to remember that argument coming up a lot every time someone ask for a comment to a downvote.

As long as there is no reasonable suspicion you're not voting for the content, you can vote how you see fit. That doesn't mean a dice roll vote is appropriate, but in practice you could probably do that.

A moderator won't do anything about this. People are allowed to roll dice and downvote based on the result, if they wanted to do so. — Stijn Sep 28 at 13:39
maybe I've seen someone else say that, but without remembering

user202362
@Derpy coin is better if just deciding up or down vote

@Telkitty yep, but the dice can be used with the standard D&D rules.
For example, on a critical fail, you also serial downvote some of the other user's posts

I'll accept my inevitable ban when it comes.

Ban can be expedited if someone pins this

Pff, you'd need to be a room owner to .... oh crap

@Stijn Consider that by design we are fine with random voting or even voting aimed at introducing noise. It is only serial vote that is punishable.

2:01 PM
@Derpy "we are fine with" is not really the case though.

I know that someone will answer that we cannot implement a system that would recognize destructive voting and that is true. The point is that we don't feel the need for that system in the first place.

I guess that's true.

@Bart I was reading about expat life in Switzerland recently, is it true that natives are a bit hostile to outsiders?

@Stijn meh, hostile not so much. But you don't easily mix in. It depends a bit on where you live though. In Geneva, where I am, the crowd is so international that I hardly know any true Swiss people.
Speaking the language helps. But if you speak German it still isn't easy to pick up Swiss German.
But if you speak French, you're just fine in the Francophone parts.

Ah I see. I had a random "what if I dropped everything and moved to another country" moment earlier this week and started reading a bit about different countries

Sorry, I was going to search for the original meta comment I had in mind. Can't find it - no search on comments and data explorer queries is to effort right now.
It was on the usual "require comment for downvote" question we get every odd day.
something similar to
> no, we don't require comment because I don't have to explain my reasons to anyone and I am entitled to vote as I wish. If I want to downvote you because I don't like your avatar I am free to do so, so grown up and move on instead of posting useless rants
upvoted comment, never removed as rude, not a joke
I think I may have tried to flag it but I am not sure and have got time to check right now.

user202362

That comment is problematic. If not for the simple fact that it's incorrect. If it can be established that a user is targeting you with votes because of your avatar, I'm sure there would be a problem.

@Bart nope, the comment wasn't exactly saying that.
There is no "targeting"
the point was that basically users are entitled to give out "random" voting if they want
and the only restriction is to not perform serial or targeted vote.

Hey all.. is this an ok place to ask advice about potential StackOverflow scamming...?
And by that I mean someone 'sniping' an answer bonus - not about how to scam StackOverflow ;)

Ask away. The worst we can really do is tell you to take it to meta.so

Yeah - I thought better to try chat before posting on the site... as probably the answer will be 'deal with it, sucker' ;-)

What is an answer bonus?

4:42 PM
Ok, a couple of days ago I saw a question that had a 500 point answer bonus, no accepted answer, so I looked into the question, found what I believed to be the answer and also included an alternative Visual Studio extension which I knew to be working... spent a bit of time making sure information was accurate, added references, screen shots...
Yep, answer bonus
Now, the clock was ticking down on the answer bonus, and the question asker still hadn't selected one of the two answers. Another guy came along, and posted an answer that was incorrect - I tested it, it could never work. He posted a link to an old version of the Visual Studio extension from his Google storage, and some screenshots that claimed it was working, which were obviously an old version of Visual Studio.
I pointed out, politely, these facts, in comments, complete with screenshots as evidence, and asked him if he wanted to take it to chat, rather than comment spam...
As the deadline for the bonus got close, as I was watching, within 10 minutes he got three upvotes, which took him to the magic '2 upvotes that collect half the bonus automatically after it times out'.
He got 250 points for a completely incorrect answer, that the question asker later downvoted him for, and stated it did not work... and it was pretty obvious he got his friends to upvote his answer to get the bonus. Nobody else apart from me was taking part...
Now, life aint fair, and all that... ;) but I hate to see abuse of Stack Overflow, where people really do try hard to help... and to see someone getting rewarded for this kind of annoys me (I always play fair, have turned down people asking me to post answers that would give me an increased rating when there was already a correct answer)
Just wondered if people advised raising it somewhere, or just letting it go... as it stands, there is a completely incorrect answer sitting there with a big blue 250 point bonus, that will mislead people.

@Shog9 thoughts?

Also, downloading this guys file from his Google storage seems open to abuse to me. Not sure if links like that are allowed on Stack Overflow...

What a convoluted system. We should invent something sort of symbolic naming system for resources like this that would allow machines to retrieve them directly via text.

@Rene... when I lived in Amsterdam, they had speed dating evenings in bars, with QR Codes on badges, so people could just walk past and snap someone to hook up with later for a chat. Of course, it doesn't work so well, and its a bit obvious when three women start pointing an iPhone at a guys chest, waving it about until it picks out the QR, trying to elbow each other out of the way...
