Wikipedia article about Joel states his year of birth, but not date. So the age is "50-51". This doesn't look optimal... did anyone around here or on Twitter ever mentioned his birthday?
user315433
The article talks at length about string concatenation...
user315433
No mentions of his birthday, unless we count the site howold.co/joel-spolsky which declares it to be January 1. Yeah, right...
@redredwine wat
The article is like [relevant intro] [useless coining terms, hope the reader is done by now] [boring personal history] [openly gay] [oooh, hey, did you know this thing about string concatenation?]
user315433
1:37 AM
Anyway, I went there trying to guess how close Joel is to retirement (as a CEO, he already retired as a blogger). The industry standard for mandatory CEO retirement seems to be 65, though this probably doesn't apply to founders.
user315433
@redredwine When the date is unknown, January 1 is about the worst guess one could make. Aim for the midpoint of the interval (July 1 or so), not an endpoint.

@ShadowWizard someone's proposed an edit removing all the funny things I wrote :( Is rejecting an edit for destroying the fun in a post allowed?
I'm not going to review it, but I'm also not going to get into an edit war if it does get approved
I hope it doesn't
@JamesENL yeah, to a limit. Fun is allowed, as long as it's not just noise.

@ShadowWizard And Barts
@Bart Well, life around the world is shitty in some way.
There is no good living unless you're especially good at it.
@Magisch yup, my wallet feels that one every month
@Bart In a positive way
12:12 PM
Everywhere's objectively the worst place and the best place to live
@TIPS nah, @Bart doesn't rule. Just observes. ;)
@Magisch when I ultimately need it, sure. But otherwise I'd love the extra 450 Euros to remain in my wallet. :p
@Bart You'd love it less when a doctor bills you <20k for a MRI scan
Absolutely
Or if you call 911 and they take you to the hospital for checkup and suddenly you sit on a 50k bill
12:14 PM
@Magisch heh, here in Israel if your house burns, you pay the bill for the fire fighters. (and the insurance won't return it)
I never had anything serious come up yet, but I'd sure as hell not take that chance. It would mean one serious injury and you spend the rest of your life paying it off
I feel like an MRI machine wouldn't cost 20k
My SO spent 2 weeks in hospital a while ago for complications with an appendix surgery ... in the US that stay could have easily cost her 150k or more
@ShadowWizard They're making sure your house doesn't get on fire
12:17 PM
@Quill when we tried to acquire a smaller version at a previous job, we were looking at 500k minimum, and those weren't even the size of hospital MRI machines.
@TIPS lol, I wish! They arrive only after it's burnt
> as cheap as $150,000 or as expensive as $1.2 million
@ShadowWizard I like it more crispy too
@Quill machine only I guess?
@Quill the machine itself, not a single scan
12:18 PM
I just don't think people should have to worry about going bankrupt of healthcare
@Quill As cheap as the cost for an R8?
As cheap as the cost for the new iPhone
I don't think healthcare is a sector thats fair game for profit-seeking companies
Its a captive market, and there is no real competition
Healthcare in what sense? To the consumers you mean?
@Magisch Drug companies, however
12:20 PM
In a broad sense
Our govt applies harsh limits on what drug makers and hospitals can charge
thats how it needs to be
@TIPS like this one?
Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Hebrew: טבע תעשיות פרמצבטיות בע"מ‎‎) is an Israeli multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Petah Tikva, Israel. Q: Down-vote reputation penalty is too big

Olie AyreOver my time using many of the Stack forums, I have of course asked questions that others thought weren't adequate. I could hardly see why and frankly, It felt somewhat unfair as I could spot many far worse questions than mine which were getting lots of up-votes. This conundrum has meant that I ...

"I get a lot of downvotes. Here's how this can be improved:"
user315433
Does subtracting rep with a downvote even serve a purpose? I guess it generates notifications... But I doubt those lead to improvements often. It's just one more thing to shrug off.
user315433
The possibility of someone losing privileges due to downvotes is hypothetical, outside of serial voting by a gang - which we probably don't want to enable.
