"Can we please chill on the overzealous emoji use to every single comment here.” Wow. This posted on the calmest backlash thread I’ve seen…
context:
Here’s the GitHub issue on Homebrew’s new, silent, opt-out analytics tracking: https://github.com/Homebrew/brew/issues/142

@hichris123 I thumbed some people on that thread.

> To solicit (a ride) from a passing vehicle by signaling with the thumb.
Are they really using git configs to set a configuration flag? :/
So both Nick and Shog are sick? I suspect a conspiracy...

Damn pollen o'er here too.

I really liked @MacHomebrew. Analytics is an issue that they can fix, but user trust is much harder to win back. https://t.co/3S1B6E7KFQ

> Truly, what could we do to fix these roguish individuals and their wanton disregard for us: the users of a free product who have never contributed to the Homebrew project (with exceptions to dunn and bfontaine, every user above me has never made a contribution, including me). Y'all are ridiculous calm down and just set the envvar.
LOL

Whatever happened to that Homebrew issue about GitHub & taxing their servers?
Oh, that was CocoaPods.

Hay is for horses.

What the... Chrome crashed twice in a row.

Did you do anything similar those two times?

Yes, used chrome.

I was chatting to a cat, then
My Chrome is allergic to cat?

Perhaps...
Do you have crash reporting turned on?

1:41 AM
Let me check..
Unfortunately no, this was on work PC.

heh looks like I don't have crash reporting turned on either.
Ah, well, c'est la vie.

(q-ban on MSE, so can't post it there) When account unmerging or whenever, add an option to clear all SE cookies, I needed to remove the site cookies so I just cleared all browser cookies >:(
Happens to the best of us. That being me.

The "best"...
And if I remember correctly, there was a lot of moaning involved until Shog suggested you post helpful answers.

@hichris123 And I did for a year and a half before I got unbanned.
I had like 1k rep.

Yeah, that was a bit harsh. But you kinda dug yourself into that hole...

Ouch...
@bjb568 Yeah; the new system should be a lot better with that - very few true q-bans are given out anymore, most of them are rolling rate-limits. I believe warnings for when you're "getting in the hole" are also shown.

@bjb568 most dev tools have a thing to do that for specific sites and cookies

@Quill Pretty sure it was fixed anyway…
Oh, account unmerge. Probably not.

I want it for gaming so we can replace all those shitty game-wiki sites
^ seriously, it may be worth considering the idea imho.
After all, you have all the infrastructure already going.

interesting
documentation is very development-centric right now, so this probably won't happen initially, but I agree it's good food for thought

user202362
maybe it's because I always have good food for thoughts, that's why my head is so big

@balpha well, such feature could really bring a lot of traffic to the site, that no doubt. And I also see the potential for surpassing some of the bad game wiki sites out there

Documentation for games will just encourage another Wikia style system

I'm of the opinion that the account should be suspended for 30 to 90 days (more or less) for promotional content—I do not see clear grounds for a permaban. However, a part of me wants the user to be told (perhaps in a moderator private message) that his business does matter and that his efforts to promote it should be recognized, even if it was at the expense of the community. It must be made clear that this kind of promotional action isn't allowed and is grounds for disciplinary action. — bwDraco 1 min ago
