Why is Smokey dead?
tl;dr
Location-dependent problems at SE's side according to StackStatus feed.
That sucks
Oh here it is!
!!/alive
15:08
@SmokeDetector GIVE ME A HUG
I think Smokey is hungover
He doesn't understand your edits I think
!!/alive'
!!/alive
he does understand edits, and my first revision was that
OK, something's still wrong.
@ProgramFOX so Smoky host is in South America?
15:10
@ShadowWizard How should I know? That's Amazon's business, not mine.
There's Cloudflare/SE issues being reported in Europe too
anyway it's dead again
so there's that too
@ProgramFOX Amazon? Thought it's hosted on someone's server, no? @Undo?
Prolly @Redo
15:11
I cannot remember if it's now hosted on Undo's closet server (North America) or his Amazon Web Services instance (wherever on the world this it).
I thought AWS was for static stuff?
Antarctica
@Quill well, CF is causing tons of trouble to SE really don't know why they chose it
@Quill nope, they have VPS's
What's wrong with DO? why use AWS?
15:12
DO?
Dragon Outfits?
DigitalOcean, they're like that
they sell VPS instances
pretty darn cheap
And... what's wrong with AWS?
nothing
15:21
@Bart Are you still around?
He's still pingable...
@Bart still pingable?
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. yup, and he still got a big Smiting Stick so better be careful....
I have @ber to be afraid of Bart for me.
@ShadowWizard N Virginia
I guess you were close
Well, Smokey itself is in my closet, metasmoke is on EC2 in N Virginia
!!/alive?
15:29
@Bart
Because I haven't linked you anything in a while
@Undo oh, but we're living in modern times. You can tell Smoky he can come out of the closet, nobody will be mad at him.
heh
Well, can you see the actual errors somewhere?
Hey, did somebody clear stars on my blamings?
@bjb568 Yeah, looks like Jason did
15:32
:(
-_-
:D
@bjb568 well, no Smoky for ~3 hours by now, might take much more until it returns... do you really prefer the Tavern like this?
Yes.
15:36
Empty...
Looks great!
No spam to flag....
@ShadowWizard real conversations with words are weird

Low Quality Posts HQ

Here's some crap for you…
talking while smokey is posting is like being on a loud train
the train is really loud so you feel free to talk, and then it quiets down for no reason and you feel awkward talking
15:38
That's why it's a problem.
@bjb568 yay!!!
@Quill I'm just used to bots in the room. I blame FOX.
2
can we add a cleverbot implementation for @bjb? then he won't even realise that he's talking to a bot
I had the reverse once…
@Undo can't you activate Smoky on AWS? Looks like this one isn't affected by SE issues
(@Pro's bot is working just fine on the cloud)
@bjb568 what? did someone think you were a bot?
15:42
@Quill I had that multiple times.
@Quill Who knows? I'd have to perform a reverse-turing turing-influence test test.
@bjb568 wtf those aren't real words
Jun 28 '15 at 22:15, by bjb568
Or… am I that bot?
@ProgramFOX I'm very, very tempted to hook a markov chain generator into this chat transcript
15:43
it'd probably just end up generating spam
Flack Overstow for chat transcripts should be awesome.
This whole Tavern is a big Markov chain.
@Quill you should try Den's transcript . . . that'll prolly end up getting you suspended in pretty much any other chat in SE.
15:56
Getting suspended's not the end of the world
Getting suspended from the Tavern is.
Never been suspended here, is it different?
getting suspended here makes you cry harder than if you watched Titanic 400 times
I got suspended for 6 months on main network chat before
usually it's just like half an hour
. . . which is 1800000 milliseconds
Tell me how many milliseconds it took to read that number.
16:00
?
??
These days I don't understand question marks.
They look like ears with earrings
!!/alive
@Undo Watching this endless list of new questions never gets boring
@ShadowWizard Wasn't SE issues, was something else
Namely some file getting all upset at not having an EOL or something like that
@Quill I've used DO before. I'm sticking with AWS because: (1) it gives me control over basically everything, and (2) it's cheaper.
Their $5/mo plan is basically what I have on EC2 for a little over $4/mo
And that could be reduced to around $2-3 per month if I wanted to commit to it.
And with AWS it's pay-for-what-you-use, which is good because I don't use much.
I.e. there's no way I'd burn through DO's 1TB transfer, so I don't want to pay for it
16:16
@Undo but what caused it all of a sudden??
We have no idea.
@ShadowWizard Smokey wanted a raise perhaps.
@ShadowWizard I suspect a filesystem hiccup.
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. 300, I'm a bit tired.
Still on hiatus, but I had to share this tidbit.

I knew the day would come when my school system blocked Stack Overflow, but I never thought it would be so soon.
16:28
@AstroCB There goes
@AstroCB protip: use a glype proxy
We need to DDOS all school district filters. They perpetuate adultism and deny a minority group the basic human right of the internet.
@Undo I see
@bjb568 Human rights? Internet?
Human right of the internet?!
I had a glype proxy set up for school and it never got patched
16:30
The right to Internet access, also known as the right to broadband, is the view that all people must be able to access the Internet in order to exercise and enjoy their rights to Freedom of expression and opinion and other fundamental human rights, that states have a responsibility to ensure that Internet access is broadly available, and that states may not unreasonably restrict an individual's access to the Internet. == History == === 2003: World Summit on the Information Society === In December 2003 the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was convened under the auspice of the United...
We had a computer shop page that was set to maintenance mode with a hidden glype subdomain because each domain was actually checked by a government staff member
Blah blah blah. Try telling that to the principal @Kitty.

Q: Hey Stack Exchange, how are we doing?

Alex A.The last time we heard from a Stack Exchange community manager was in March of 2014, when Grace Note came to talk to us about the progress we've made as a site. That was back when code-trolling was a thing, and the community's response to the news wasn't particularly positive given how code troll...

7.9 questions a day means you all are getting close. I'm guessing (at this rate) you'll get an election later in the year and a design sometime later. Not much else to say, really. — Jon Ericson ♦ Jan 15 at 4:11

How long has the beta label been gone from the Jobs button on SO?
@Andy Good question.
For some people it didn't appear from the start.
At least that's what I heard.
Huh. I've had a bright blue "beta" badge until some time today.
Oh. It was gone for some people a long time ago, I can tell for sure.
SE is cryptic.
Or buggy. Or both.
Or brown

Is there a question on encouraging users to up vote a question that they found useful?
See:

Q: iPad app with variable speed video playback?

RobottinosinoI would like to watch recorded lectures at 1.7x of their original speed. Which app will allow me to do that?

1 up vote, 12621 views.
Surely a good deal of people, who likely looked that up, found that useful.
and you don't upvote it?
I did, actually.
so did I.
...and now it has three up votes.
22:39
community santas
but most of those views are probably non-users
But me saying that shouldn't be the reason for having more up votes. They should have more up votes because people have obviously found the question either interesting or useful.
If a decent amount of non-users (arbitrary number) up vote a question, they should receive an equivalent amount of rep to a single up vote, where every arbitrary number of up votes causes the pseudo-upvote.
Probably , but...

@FlagAsSpam Yeah, that would be too open to abuse.
If somebody changes their IP often enough (using stuff like dynamic IPs, VPNs, Tor, etc.), they can just upvote their own post a ton.
