Indeed (+1 patterned shirt)

Kev
@RebeccaChernoff - wasn't calling you a Vulcan :)

Wow, he started using chat here just to make that comment. Nice

Kev
11:07 PM
@drachenstern - what do you mean by that. I've used chat plenty times before.

chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/users/419/kev <-- that would seem to beg to differ
have I got a cached version? :(
oh, /facepalm, I missed the itty bitty number at the bottom

Kev
ok...maybe not meta...
what's the big deal?

nothing big deal about it, just thought it was funny/remarkable/interesting when I thought it was only the first post.

Kev
why?

grr, what's the undo procedure for 1) open mouth, 2) insert foot ?

11:10 PM
@drachenstern 1) bite down 2) swallow

@Kev you don't see anything interesting about a person's first chat comment being a retort "that's not what I meant"?
@Shog9 thanks!

Kev
not really, I thought it was being well mannered

ooh, new employer message on stack overflow careers

Kev
@drachenstern and instead of comment and run away I thought I'd pop in and clear that up.

I'd love to see more sysadmin jobs on there

11:12 PM
if they're e-mailing me after 6PM, they must work longer than 8 hour days

still you can only fish with the bait you have, I know.

@Kev sorry, phone call. I see. Good on ya of course. You should come around these parts more ;)

Kev
@drachenstern - I would love to spend more time but 18hr days at work :/

@DanGrossman Sounds like Meta...

@Kev I know that feeling

OK, here goes rsync, het's see if it's better than cPanel's lame account copy. Wish me luck (again!)
I have no doubt it will be better

@Josh Are you hosting for other people that use a control panel?

@DanGrossman Yes

ah, that's a pain, good luck

11:18 PM
This is one of our cPanel servers which went bad
I am copying all accounts to a brand new cPanel server
@DanGrossman Thanks. Luck will be needed ;-)

4-8" of snow tomorrow night

oy that sucks

makes me want to get out tonight, but I have nowhere to go
I should really move somewhere more interesting
Even if I want to drive to Philadelphia, the 4 meetup groups I'm a part of (PHP, JavaScript, WordPress, Office Hours) rarely if ever meet
I should learn Drupal just so I have a reason to go to their meetups

For some reason I'm thinking of the part of fight club with all the self help meetings...

haha yeah

Q: Who is responsible for twitter integration?

Eric LippertGood day stack overflowers. Apparently someone has created a twitter feed in my name and is using it to broadcast all the comments I post on Stack Overflow. It was not my intention to create such a twitter feed, and I am not at all pleased that someone has done so on my behalf. Whether someone...

@Shog9 that's... unusual...

@Shog9 can we push him into the repcap on his first post?

It wouldn't be SO if Lippert didn't hit the rep cap for a single post.
There's something so... dirty... about seeing SO posts crushed into Twitter messages, complete with shrunken URLs

I know right? But it's also fascinating that such a thing works that every thing he does is broadcast out to twitter. Interesting replication hierarchy that.

It'd be more interesting if it tried to make the post bodies fit by converting them to txtspk

11:33 PM
lmao

Kev
Dunno if this just appeared on the profile twitter.com/#!/ericlippert : "[bot] If the real Eric wants this, please get in touch. creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5

shakes fist at Twitter

Why does the word "user contributions" in the meta footer link to meta.stackoverflow.com/questions-all

Ah! Twitter's fax number: 1-415-222-9958
Now to find a fax machine...

Got a modem and a phone line? I don't. But Windows still comes with fax software.

11:42 PM
lol

@Shog9 I think you can find one of those in the 1990s...

You'd think Microsoft would stop wasting space bundling something like that with its OS. But if only 1% of people ever use it, that's over a million complainers for customer service to deal with.

@DanGrossman no because it's a legitimate thing for a system to offer that's been offering it for 15+ years

Kev
@DanGrossman - I've found myself having to use it a few times over the past few years, it's handy, I still deal with folks who still like to see things on paper

@Kev I just walk to Staples (or more recently the fax machine in the property's club house) and send the one fax, rather than have a whole setup at home to send one document every 2 months.
The only people that still want a fax from me are banks

Kev
11:50 PM
@DanGrossman and a buddy of mine who's a civils constructor PM has to deal with faxes day in day out. a fair size of the Scottish building industry still lives and dies by the fax
@DanGrossman - sadly he's out in the middle of no-where

I've found that a lot of front-office stuff still lives and dies by the fax. Stuff that we as a group here would say "but there's PDFs and scanners and such and email to boot".

@DanGrossman Interesting. Over here, everything official must be done by Fax or mail. E-Mail is not court-admissible evidence if one of the parties dispute its authenticity (a claim which they don't have to prove)

AFAIK, in the US, a writing is a writing, it doesn't matter what medium it's in
e-mail is no more or less trusted than fax

@DanGrossman I'm not sure about that but IANAL
I think faxes are still the de-facto legal standard sadly

my law teacher seemed to think so

11:53 PM
@DanGrossman yeah, it's the same over here, but the legal system has proved E-Mails are not "provable" - sadly

Kev
@DanGrossman yes, I guess much to Bill Gate's chagrin way back when

That really sucks, and is a terrible waste of paper.

Faxing in a document with your signature is considered ok legally, emailing a pdf isn't. I think, IANAL (in the US)

"Filming the MGM logo, 1924"
Clickwrap and type-to-sign have been held legally enforceable contracts in the US
dunno why the transport protocol matters

Kev
My bank won't even let me fax a change of address, let alone accept and email.

11:56 PM
@RebeccaChernoff that's what I thought too

@Kev my bank is supposedly getting ready to implement Check21
The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (or Check 21 Act) is a United States federal law, , enacted into law October 28, 2003 by the 108th Congress. It took effect one year later, on October 28, 2004. The law allows the recipient of the original paper check to create a digital version of the original check—called a "substitute check," thereby eliminating the need for further handling of the physical document. Consumers are most likely to see the effects of this act when they notice that certain checks (or image of) are no longer being returned to them with their monthly statement even ...

Remote deposit refers to the ability to deposit a check into a bank account from one's home or office without having to physically deliver the actual check to the bank. This is typically accomplished by scanning a digital image of a check into a computer, then transmitting that image to the bank—a practice that became legal in the United States in 2004 when the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (or Check 21 Act) took effect. This service is typically used by businesses, though a remote deposit application for consumers has been developed and has begun to be implemented by a handful of...
my bank sells check scanners for that, it's neat

Kev
@drachenstern - yes I saw that a while back. quite "advanced" thinking for the banking sector

A signature is a stylized script associated with a person. It is comparable to a seal. In commerce and the law, a signature on a document is an indication that the person adopts the intentions recorded in the document. An electronic signature is any electronic means that indicates that a person adopts the contents of an electronic message. The U.S. Code defines an electronic signature for the purpose of US law as "an electronic sound, symbol, or process, attached to or logically associated with a contract or other record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the r...
Since we're all posting Wikipedia links... =b

lmao

Kev
11:59 PM
is this because being able to continue to use cheques is some kind of fundamental right
