4:00 AM
<~ has been in Bill's house but didn't see the famous auto-personalizing paintings

@DanGrossman - Really?
The house didn't recognize you. Not sure what it mistook you for though.

yeah, when he still worked there full time, he would invite new hires over twice a year or so

and you were a new hire at MS at one point?
I think the house must've thought you were a lolcat, btw.

yeah, sorta

dunno why, but that's my guess.

4:02 AM
it was an internship but not officially an internship, because I stayed for 6 months rather than just a summer, and was on a normal team filling a normal FT opening, but no benefits

@DanGrossman - Ever work on something for a few months and wish you were done and yet the dev process drags on and on and on and on... ?
Ah.
That's nice. I'm not up to that part of my life yet, but that sounds like a neat option at some point.

was still in college then
@Moshe I work on things for a week and wish I was done... :p

Haven't started yet.
Yea, I dreamt of this app last summer, still going at it.

@YiJiang It's going to be a little while before I can manage something that huge. I kinda finally figured out signals, though. :)

Praying nobody releases it it. Working long shifts daily. It's depressing.

4:04 AM
is hoping that Marc Gravell and balpha city will grow big enough so that they merge together, then he can call them both balpharc

*balpharc

@GeorgeMarian - Have you thought about that Python exercise?

@YiJiang lol

oh boy, here comes @user10926. (just kidding)
Whats up @user10926 ?

lol

4:06 AM
@Moshe I've read Google's overview and what not.

I don't want any trouble lol

I haven't been feeling well, so I haven't put too much thought into it beside that. =/

@GeorgeMarian - Me too, never got past that. If you;ve read the transcript, you'll see why.
@GeorgeMarian - Feel better.

@Moshe Eh? How about a quick recap? :P

I think I am finally going to give myself a proper username

4:06 AM
@user10926 - me neither, what brings you to the meta chat?

Thanks, I'll live. :)

@GeorgeMarian - Working on a project I dreamt up last summer. I really want to make it happen.

@Moshe - I just like reading the conversation

@user10926 And a proper gravatar. We suggest unicornify

@YiJiang ditto that.

4:08 AM
@Moshe Ah, cool. (I guess I did catch that. I thought it would be farther up in the transcript.)

@GeorgeMarian Nope, it's not that complicated. I have a dream, it's going well, thank G-d, but it's still stressful to code.

I need two more letters inorder to use my wikipedia handle
too bad

@user10926 I just made my earlier comment because you came here sans handle or gravatar and usually that means someone with a meta question or complaint.
No offense meant, of course.

@moshe - none taken

@user10926 good, thank you for that.
Now, does anyone here have an iPad?
I need some advice.
For my app, that is.

4:14 AM
Anyone in here into academics/writing papers?

@user10926 I do enjoy writing, but what are you referring to specifically?
whoa!
...wait for it...
...
... ...
eh, no onebox for ces.cnet.

@Moshe Of course not. Whaddya expect?

@YiJiang - nothing, but now that you're here...
Do you have an iP(o|a)d?

@Moshe - I am in the field of medicine, and wrote a brief commentary about e-mail address harvesting from a major healthcare related site (leading to likely electronic spam) and have been pedaling the short paper around to various medical journals (NEJM, JAMA, etc), but I have not been able to get it in print anywhere.

@Moshe No

4:18 AM
@YiJiang - oh.

AS a matter fact, I don't own any iThingadongdongs

@user10926 - I can't help you there...

@user10926 That's not the type of thing journals typically print, is it?

@YiJiang - I hear ya. I'm not paid by Apple to convince you to buy any iWhatyoucalledthem, so iWon't.

sometimes they do; and I tried to dumb it down for doctors; but so far no luck

4:19 AM
@user10926 - Try Readers Digest...
Or Wired Magazine.
Hey,
How the (redacted - oy) is this a "Tablet"?
puleez, any device smaller than an iPad is a GameBoy variant running Android.

Anybody here use Evernote?

does wired have a submission/authors page?

It's pure Chutzpah to call that thing a tablet.

Q: html or css for images

AleksIn a web-app should the majority of images be stored in css or html/js files? I am emulating a physical device (Kindle) and a lot of element images will be reused (button images, menu images...). Having an object oriented background I'm more for creating a standardized element and reusing it, cha...

4:22 AM
@user10926 okay, go for it.
Any thoughts on that small "thing"?

@RebeccaChernoff Not I, but I have heard good things about it.

I'm genuinely unhappy about that nonsense.
how do you call oversize cell phones "tablet"s?

Anytime it saves I get an exception >_<

@RebeccaChernoff - superuser.com

Q: Is there a way to collapse/expand all nodes in a tree control?

Nam Gi VUI'm using TFS web UI and very often have the need to collapse/expand tree nodes. Do you have any suggestion for me? Edit TFS stands for Team Foundation Server

4:25 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Oh. Well, that's less than useful.

Gnite.
My room mates are piling in and that means lights out soon.

It saves, it just doesn't get rid of the modal overlay.

Okay, had to return for this:
@RebeccaChernoff -

So the exception isn't preventing it from saving, just makes it a ridiculous headache.

Q: Play music in iphone + file type mp3

user564968hello i want to play music file in iphone ...is there any code for that ?

4:26 AM
@Moshe g'night

@GeorgeMarian - gnight.

@RebeccaChernoff That makes me wonder what is failing.

The question is a dupe, horribly written, a "rtfm", someone who is obviously not going to be an asset to SO.

vote/flag as appropriate so the community can handle it. (:

@RebeccaChernoff - Did flag it, thanks.

4:29 AM
Oy @RebeccaChernoff, why aren't you migrating?

@YiJiang boom! Starred!

:watching pings scroll by too fast to read even after removing the javascript... wonders how long the old code will stay in peoples' cache:

Well, it's pretty much official. I get booted out of private rooms on chat.se, but at least I remain logged in. :)

...Kinda!

It's an improvement.

On my way to the slaughterhouse now.

Sounds fun.

Exam results. Sigh...

Ah.. crosses fingers

4:49 AM
So apparently Evernote doesn't support recent versions of Chrome. Like, newer than version 6.

Clearly they need to go home then.

It's hard to test the accuracy of this stuff when over 400 people have left a webpage with the javascript open in tabs for more than 45 minutes...
hopefully most of them will have closed them by tomorrow
People are incapable of walking, swimming or driving in a straight line when blindfolded

5:40 AM
Listen for it...

Weird, this morning SO, programmers know me, meta doesn't...

@DanGrossman The driving one surprised me, a little bit.
*surprises
@Benjol Eh? Like your OpenID isn't working?

@GeorgeMarian, no, it just made me log in again, works ok now.
but it didn't do an auto-login or anything

@Benjol I had that happen on SO the other day.
No idea why

Odd, indeed. I'm logged into both today w/o issue.

5:48 AM
anyway, the compensation is having 2K (exactly) on meta :)

Though, auth on careers.se was screwed up a few days ago.
And, now...it's working w/o having done anything. Mmm....smell that lovely PFM...

Heheh

Way to read the instructions, George. They're supposed to be space delimited...
Ooh...180% complete.

6:13 AM
That's quite complete

And, yet, there are empty boxes. heh

@GeorgeMarian careers? :)

@Benjol Yup.

@YiJiang's not around is he? Good, 'cos I just used <i> in some markdown :)

For some reason, I'm feeling a tad reluctant to publish it with company names included. I'm not exactly sure why that's the case.

6:16 AM
...what? You can't forward old mail as the result of a filter in Gmail anymore?
fail.

@RebeccaChernoff, wassat?
ah, you mean the 'apply to existing mails' option?

You mean it won't send them on their way as a result of them matching a newly created filter, ala "apply to the matching results?"

Morning @Mar ;)

@Benjol I wonder how many people that matches...

Oh boy... scolds @Benjol

6:20 AM
@GeorgeMarian, auto-complete said it matched two, one of whom is not in the room. If @MarcGravell has implemented what I suggested, he should be the only one notified, hehe :)

still on my todo list

It is only Monday morning, after all. :P

always plenty keeping me busy...

Of course, if you implement that and YiJiang's request, I'll be able to say "morning @Ma", which would be even weirder :)

Man, careers sure is buggy. How's that for a statement?

6:27 AM
Is it?

Uh-huh. The accounts section complains about not being able to find an account on meta, though it appears in the employer view.

@Benjol er, why? The @Yi is a match because of whole words. @Ma isn't a whole word.

It only seemed to allow me to hide one account from that view. Not to mention that I click on "hide account" and it doesn't toggle to "show account."

Hrm. :/

i seem to be good at breaking things.
Maybe I should look for a job like that...

6:30 AM
@MarcGravell, ok, I was thinking of just bringing down the length limit to 2 characters, I hadn't thought of a whole-word criteria. good point

@GeorgeMarian A professional code breaker? I think that normally comes with writing unit tests attached.. ;)

@TimStone Sure, I can do that. I ust don't like the idea of working in QA.

Yeah, I imagine it'd get a bit boring after a while.

Yup, that's one reason for sure. Another is the fact that the business usually wants it yesterday, development usually gets it to you tomorrow (if you're lucky) and you're left holding the bag. :)

Ah yeah, definitely.

6:42 AM
Hey...look at that now, my meta account shows up on careers under 'accounts.'
And, now it doesn't....and now it does....and now it doesn't...

Apparently it thinks that you're auditioning for a magic show, or something.

lol
This doesn't make me feel any better about publishing it.

oh we have smurfs here v

@Benjol Note: old mail will not be forwarded
I have 80ish emails in a label on one account, and I want them in another account.

@GeorgeMarian Have you posted anything through Careers before? We were considering using it for hiring purposes, though if it's buggy I'm a bit wary.

6:54 AM
@TimStone Nope. All I've done so far is to import my resume and fill-in some of the other bits. For some reason I'm wary of posting it with real company names, though I have resumes elsewhere with that info.
I have heard good things about it, though.

@GeorgeMarian Oh, because of the association with yourself in the context of SO, or?

Oh yah, and paying to have it be searchable gives me pause.

They have to make sure you're serious!

@TimStone I'm not exactly sure why. That's probably it, but it's not like I'm using a handle on SO.

And seemingly a little extra cash might be helpful towards encouraging development on that site. :P

6:55 AM
While the tone of my posts is a bit more professional on money, I haven't made an ass of myself on SO.

I'd be surprised if you had, heh.

@TimStone Thankfully, those episodes are hidden behind a handle very few people know/associate with me. :)

Q: How to review? Can we agree on a review 'policy'?

BenjolOn the review page, there is a one-sentence guideline on reviewing. I'm not sure if 'one question to r...

@TimStone I haven't always been this mild mannered. ;)

I keep starting typing 'Humans are dead' in the captcha, then remembering the that's NOT the captcha text :)

Hm...I'm debating whether or not I should go back to playing Forza. I'd really like to get userscript stuff worked on, but my brain also hates me at the moment. There's also still some work stuff to finish up... sighs Always so close, and yet not.

@TimStone I'm debating attempting to get some sleep.

That'd be a pretty reasonable option for me too, heh...apparently my mind isn't down with that idea though, since I'm strangely awake.
...Not that this is abnormal for me, but I was dead tired earlier.

7:04 AM
I dunno how many times I've gone to bed feeling tired only to lie there awake, mind going a mile a minute.

That's a feeling I am far too familiar with.

Alright, wish me luck. I think I'm gonna give it a try. I need to call a recruiter tomorrow.

G'night, and good luck with both the sleep and recruiter.

Formation There are usually four forms of thundersnow: * A normal thunderstorm on the leading edge of a cold front or warm front that can either form in a winter environment or one that runs into cool air and where the precipitation takes the form of s...

@edorian You can use a userstyle for that

@MichaelMrozek, if you're around, I've answered your comment. Can discuss further here if you like

9:33 AM
Sigh, the Java room is dead
Stupid newbie question -- I read on the interwebs that annotations on java abstract classes are not inherited by implementations. Is it still true?
What about annotations on methods the implementations inherit without touching?
@YiJiang That alone wouldn't do -- the tag name is buried in the URLs
(or at least, it used to be)

@radp I believe each post has classes corresponding to it's tags

@YiJiang the bubbles do not belong to posts in the DOM.

tags t-php t-ûhtaccess t-mod-rewrite
But only on the tag list element, and since CSS doesn't have a parent selector a userscript will be needed then
Still, not too hard using querySelectorAll or jQuery

html body.question-page div#tag-menu
this is the full path to the java bubble including all tags
You have to look at #tag-menu .tm-heading a[href] to see the tag

He's looking to color posts with a certain tag, yes? Each post has a list of tags, that list element has classes corresponding to the post's tags. Using userscripts, it would be possible to do what he wanted by selecting all list elements with that tag, then traversing upwards and giving the post element the color

9:39 AM
oh, I thought he was talking about the tag bubbles.

Basically, $('.t-css').closest('.question-summary').css('background-color', 'orange')

Okay, then yes, it's possible with CSS only but ugly -- I posted that yesterday night.

For [css] tags for example

9 hours ago, by radp
a.post-tag[href*=insert-bad-tag-name-here],
{
  text-shadow: red  0px  0px 3px,
               red  1px  1px,
               red  1px  0px,
               red  1px -1px,
               red  0px  1px,
               red  0px -1px,
               red -1px  1px,
               red -1px  0px,
               red -1px -1px;
  color: white !important;
}
I had to use text-shadow because on Gaming you can't set the tag background -- it uses images for that and background-color only changes the transparent bits (basically nothing).
on the trilogy, background-color should be okay to use.

But that only highlights tags - if you're looking to highlight an entire post, userscript will probably be needed

9:42 AM
oh, that's even easier, posts are tagged just for that purpose.
are they not? No, they aren't.

@radp You can always roll your own version and override gaming's CSS
Let the inside of the tag be transparent, and the outside left corner area be white, then set bg color

@YiJiang that'd lose the pretty pixelation!
unacceptable.

Create that image, then upload it to somewhere
@radp Eh... it should be the same

I mean I'm using mothereffingtextshadow to make text border!
It's like CSS 3, which means I must abuse it as much as possible and then gloat about it.

@radp Text shadows are CSS 2.1

9:46 AM
details.
(I wonder what took METS.com so long then?)

@radp IE8, despite claiming full CSS 2.1 support, doesn't support text-shadow

good ole IE

10:04 AM
@YiJiang, thanks for the bounty BTW :)

10:22 AM
question of the now: is tagging enough to answer "what SE should I ask on?"

10:39 AM
@radp, uh, I don't understand the question :(

10:52 AM
Grrr... can you imagine the random stuff people comment flag?
For instance, here, Jon got in a comment war with two other users (I think):
The comment flag is not the opposite of a comment upvote! You do not use it to show disagreement!!

@YiJiang, haha, maybe I'm not so jealous of your 10k after all :)

11:34 AM
@YiJiang uh, I don't recall any view like that back when I had the 10k tools. Is that part of the new fancy redesigned stuff?
eh, it ain't easy being a Jon Skeet.

@YiJiang, @radp - here's an idea, there should be an option 'flag as I disagree', that does nothing :)

@Benjol That's an horrible idea. Downvote this message

@balpha how's the weather in Berlin?
Is it as spring-y as it's here?

yeah, excellent. blue sky and sunny

It rains here and the sky is rat grey :(

@balpha Very nice.
It's my turn to keep the sidewalks ice-free and I won the great prize! There is not an inch of snow nor ice anywhere to be seen :)
So unless it starts snowing again tomorrow, I should be okay
@radp don't worry, that's going to change soon!
I have no idea about metereology but my gut tells me it will be sunny in Italy sooner or later

It was sunny, beautiful, here, on Saturday, felt like April or something.
Been raining ever since yesterday morning. And rat grey, as radp says ;)

12:15 PM
yeah, almost terrifying, wasn't it!
Where in Switzerland are you located?
Switzerland can be funny weather-wise, can't it?
Like, sunny in the south, rainy 50km further north, and no change for days
At least in my experience

@Pekka, I have a 30km drive home, the weather can change twice in that distance :)

@Benjol yeah, that's what I mean :) Fascinating.

@Pekka Work near Lausanne

Singapore's weather... is pretty boring actually.
25 to 30 deg C uniform across the year. At this time of the day there are daily showers

@Benjol sigh I love Lausanne! If I just spoke french, I would move there.

12:17 PM
Which makes drying laundry a pain

@balpha

@radp Ooo ooo ooo Portal!!

@Pekka Learn: it's just another language, right? :)

@Benjol I had six years of french in school, and I'm sad to say it all went in one ear, and came out of the other! A shame really, as it's a beautiful language. But I've given up on it :) Although I still seem to instinctively understand french on some level, even though by brain doesn't know how to parse the words.
Lausanne has an Underground that goes up the mountain (I was there last summer)
Never seen anything like it
That's Swiss engineering for ya

@Pekka that's the secret of language learning. Stop trying to parse the words, let your intuition try to work out the sentence
@Pekka And no drivers :)

12:21 PM
@Benjol yeah. Who knows, maybe it'll come back if I actually go there for a while....
@Benjol yeah, scary at first! :)

I learnt lots of my French watching the TV. Slower than in the Matrix, but not too painful :)

@Benjol Good point! TV is surely one of the best ways to learn it.
That's why all the smaller countries' populations in europe are relatively good at english
Their markets are too small for lip-synched movies to be profitable.
In Germany, France and Spain, everything is synched, so no learning effect

@Pekka, 'synched' very relative. You get used to it after a while, and they've got better with time, but for people who've never watched dubbed films, it does look funny to start with. There's a scene in Airplane which mocks dubbed films.

@Benjol Yeah, it does look funny :)
@Benjol so what's your native tongue then?

@Pekka, I'm English. 100% mongrel :)

12:28 PM
@Benjol ah, all right! So you've migrated to Switzerland.

Yup

I've been thinking about doing the same thing, it is a nice country in many ways

Aren't you being flooded right now? The bbc thinks so...

@Benjol yeah! I'll have to get on the bike and go take a look

@Pekka, don't forget your armbands :)

12:31 PM
@Benjol Yeah :) Maybe I need to take a canoe just in case
Although I think there's still a meter or two to go until things really get out of hand
They've invested massively in flood protection over the past ten years
There are other cities downriver that are going to be more affected.

12:46 PM
bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12151597, one piece of potentially good news...

@Benjol that would be lovely if it holds

@Pekka, yup, big IF :)

@Benjol yeah :) Spain must be a really difficult country to hold together. On some level though, I admire their disrespect for any kind of federal authority... (As long as it doesn't turn into violence of course)
I love how traffic signs and such have to be in both high Spanish, and the regional dialect. I'd seriously like to see that in Germany, where people are mostly ashamed of their dialects
