TL;DR: Stack Overflow tries to both be a useful repository of programming knowledge for the benefit of the wider community and a help site for the benefit of incompetent help vampires.

You know how there are recurring personality types you see again and again on mailing lists and such?
There's this one which is that of an old guy, usually going on retirement age, who's really snappy and cranky.
They don't usually last too long, but they make places uncomfortable ones to be while they're there.

There also those who a mere plebs in their real life, and try to dominate online

"Mister Get-Off-My-Lawn" doesn't really characterize it quite as well as one might like. Wrong angle.
More like the ranters who call in on all-night radio talk-shows.
It's like, what crawled into your bed and died that you have to take it out on everybody else so bad?

Then there those who are 'big shots' in their real life and are seemingly confused that we do not worship them here

I really don't care about personalities. If they have good ideas, good.
And YCS has good ideas.

each to their own

I care about when other people are made to feel horrible.

I wouldn't know any of YCS's ideas, as due to his attitude, I don't pay attention to him/her/it

2:19 AM
You have to be able to get past that on the internet.
People with negative opinions offer the most feedback to improve.

Nope, it is the same as in 'real life', if a person is rude, they lose all credibility (with me anyway) and I no longer consider them as credible
people like that's ranting etc is, to me, only worthy of amusement value

@bjb568 You honestly don’t think it’s possible for someone to poison an entire community with hurtful trolling, with vitriolic tirades, with mean-spirited invectives that pointlessly belittle and lash out at that community? Man, I wish I were eight years old again.

I much prefer reading YCS posts to reading the main SO site.

I stopped reading anything and everything YCS writes after seeing a particuarly vile attack on a nother member.

2:34 AM
@santiago Same.
I don't want to read something that makes me feel sick inside.

There are a number of members who I do not bother reading their contributions at all - due to their demonstrated attitude
If there were a block function - to block all their contributions, I would use it on them. But there isn't of course - so I just disregard them.

@tchrist I typically read them just to be amazed someone could actually think that stuff.

@tchrist Their impact as a community member is completely disjunct and irrelevant to their help in meta discussions.
I think YCS was probably suspended for good reason. But that is completely irrelevant with regard to his meta contributions.

@tchrist ... you might be able to, but I can't. ;) Spam flags on the other hand, are accessible to all.

Well, it certainly let me try. :)
If the SO mods get to it before we get enough spam flags on it to zap it ourselves, they might disagree with our flag because they won't see that it's spam right away without a custom flag.

@bjb568 due to YCS's rude and abusive interactions, his meta contributions have become irrelevant
@tchrist the ones I flagged all were deemed helpful and the spam nuked

No. You believe in the ad hominem argument. Nothing besides ideas are ever relevant.

@bjb568 please do not tell me what I believe

@bjb568 Even at six I knew that cruelty, kindness, and compassion all count.
The way you say something is just as important as what you say, and sometimes more so.
When your executive function has finished developing, you will finally come to understand this. Give it ten or fifteen years until you grow up.

3:26 AM
@tchrist exactly, respect is earned by positive interactions, alongside positive contributions. YCS largely fails in the first part, so therefore does not earn the respect for the second.

@bjb568 I don't mean to put you down. There really are pieces of your brain that are not developed yet, and this is one of them.

@Shog9 Well, you can say "edited" for the anonymous edit and "promoted/whatever" for the bumps. I'm not aware of other activity it does
Ah maybe post removals; "modified" works well, since everybody with 10k tools can still see the removed post and get what's going on.

@yo' any activity can be attributed to Community if the active user is deleted.
There are a shitload of edge cases here
I'm not entirely sure there's a common case

yo'
@Shog9 but that's another case, isn't it?

4:23 PM
one big hairy ball of edge-cases

yo'
There are two things: activity of deleted users, and activity of some bot or of the system

that's Community
activity of anonymous users, activity of deleted users, activity of the system

yo'
I see your point, just try to see mine when I'm confused by the Community's activity. I also wonder how much the argument that "the bump should look as innocent as possible to be efficient" is valid.

[ SmokeDetector ] Offensive answer detected: Underperforming in internship (very very bad experience) by Ed Would on workplace.stackexchange.com

yo'
@Shog9 activity of anonymous and deleted users can be treated (marked) the same way as for standard users.

4:26 PM
Yay!

@yo' Well, that's a separate line of discussion (which is why I dropped it into a comment) - my impression upon reading your post was that you didn't particularly want to see these at all; that is, you wanted a different status so that you could ignore them.
That's kind of a different problem
If a sufficient number of people want to ignore these, there should be an option to do so
if everyone wants to ignore them, we should just stop bumping them entirely
OTOH, if they're serving an important purpose, then making them easy to ignore defeats that purpose

yo'
@Shog9 well, ignore them in seeing what happens at the site. You see that with ~50 upvotes, the idea of knowing that a post is just bumped is popular.

@yo' sure. I'm curious to know why though.

yo'
@Shog9 is there any stat if the bumps are helpful?

Not really; there's no easy way to track these
it's very lightweight; once anyone else touches the post, the evidence is gone
so all you can see are the ones that don't work
I guess we could query for one thing: how many Community-bumps result in answer upvotes

yo'
4:29 PM
@Shog9 because it's confusing! You see "modified by community" so you think: "Ah, an anonymous edit? Or a deleted post? What's going on here?" And you realize, after some headaches, that it was just a bump.

Should be possible to pull that from Data Explorer if you're interested

yo'
@Shog9 you can access the bumps in DE?
anyway, usefulness of the bumps is anothher question, I just point out that it's confusing as is.

@yo' you'd have to kinda guess at it - look for posts with a LastActivityDate > than any observable activity on the post

yo'
@Shog9 ah ok, that's ... far from reliable :-) (OTOH, that's what I do to see that it was indeed only a bump)
and also, it loses the purpose if the last activity is a new answer, or a bounty, or whatever.
I just wonder now if it's really a feature with unknown "profit" :)
