4:00 PM
speaking of chili, stir time!

@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I wasn't into that.

@rchern I demand chili at once

Of course, I was, like, eight at the time.
Maybe it wouldn't be so bad now.

I still suck at it, but I enjoy watching intelligent people solve them
I make suggestions like "you should capture the black king", and they give me a slinky and tell me to go play with that instead

Wow first downvote for me!

4:01 PM
@Eldros Exciting innit? :P

@YiJiang Quite

You'd be a veteran in no time

@Eldros Have a bronze badge... :-)

@TheUnhandledException for, not from ;P

A shame that the downvoter didn't let a comment, I would have liked to know his rational

4:02 PM
Oh. My bad @YiJiang :-)
@Eldros it happens. Can't get too bent out of shape about it. :-)
(lack of explanation that is)

@Eldros Try downvoting @rchern. It's addictive

@MichaelMrozek If only I had enough rep XD

I chalk downvotes without comment up to people being jerks ;-)
(Unless it's meta of course)

I always comment -- it's like a second downvote but with words. The goal is to make them cry

4:04 PM
Okay, my post is now 23% less insane.

So know that I went through the rite of passage and celebrated it with my fellow MSOers, I'm off to a birthday party

@PopularDemand What was insane about it before?

See you around

Enjoy it @Eldros!

@TimStone See the revision history.

4:05 PM
No, I mean, I saw the post before. :P

@MichaelMrozek grumble

13 mins ago, by rchern
The mix of text and images with no separation and images with text does my head in
12 mins ago, by Michael Mrozek
Also inline tags and code blocks that scroll off the side. It's pretty much every different kind of element possible in a post :)

There were just all sorts of different elements al
Yeah, what Michael said.

Ah. shrugs
But yeah.

@MichaelMrozek Sure, it's on the 2nd floor in the building where I work. Come on over. <_<

4:06 PM
Funny thing about a system that uses regular expressions to parse out components...

Oooh can I have some too @rchern? If I start driving there now I can probably get there by... Sunday? ;-)

@rchern Oh, I'm already there
looks around shiftily

Damn, I'm sure it will all be gone by then.

@MichaelMrozek You misspelled "here."

@MichaelMrozek is sure to hog it all

4:08 PM
We serve at noon!

@PopularDemand ...damn it

And all 12 pots will likely be empty by 1 haha

Quickly, to our private jets!

What are we, the Meta Superhero Squad?

hahaha

4:10 PM
Why do people like chili so much? All it does is make me sweat a lot and generally feel miserable

Erm.

@YiJiang And if you can do that for longer than all those other wusses, you win!

Led by Popular Demand, the Meta League Of Justice springs into action following member Tim Stone's rally cry to action! Our member rchern is in need of assictance, she has chili which must be eaten at once!
2

Or do people actually like that? Weird.

@YiJiang I think you might be eating chili incorrectly

4:11 PM
I'm gonna go with you eat bad chili. q:

@YiJiang all the more chili for me!

@MichaelMrozek Please, enlighten me :)

I agree with @rchern. I always feel great after eating chili!
But I only eat great chili

@YiJiang Are you possibly putting it in your eyes instead of your mouth? Or eating broken glass by mistake?
2
Don't feel ashamed, these are common mistakes
2

4:12 PM
@MichaelMrozek Only for you I think

My coworkers just asked me what was so funny @MichaelMrozek
Thanks for getting me in trouble ;-)

@TheUnhandledException This year, I am thankful for having a door.

Hmm. I think I must actually @MichaelMrozek++ for once.

@rchern Wow. It is the holidays.

@TheUnhandledException My boss asked me once why I waste my time on meta.SO instead of SO or another real site. I had trouble coming up with a decent answer

4:14 PM
@rchern You have to clone @MichaelMrozek? That seems...unnecessary.

My boss doesn't know meta exists because he already worries normal SO is a waste of time :-)

@MichaelMrozek Wait, your boss knows about this and you're still employed?

@PopularDemand It confuses me too

I told my boss that I got a t-shirt from Stack Overflow and asked where our company t-shirts were.

4:15 PM
@TimStone clone no. But I could agree that he won +1 internets.

@rchern Even that seems borderline dangerous.

@rchern Meh. You're obviously trying to increment the Mrozek population by luring him with your chili

...I'm concerned about the direction this conversation has headed

Then strapping him to your cloning machine

Nice recovery. Depending on the definition of "cloning machine"

4:16 PM
And with a evil laugh, @rchern has a whole army of @MichaelMrozek

Apropos of nothing, where do you people buy computers? Direct from manufacturer? Big box store? Online tech store?

Ready to take over the world!

@YiJiang incrementing the Mrozek population is surely the last thing we need.

Yeah, I know, that's far less exciting than the possibility of me eating broken glass

@PopularDemand direct from manufacturer, or from a large retail store like Best Buy

4:17 PM
It's superfluous; one is enough to take over

@PopularDemand I built my desktop with components from Newegg, and have a HP laptop which I bought directly from their site. Oh, and I guess I bought my monitors directly from Dell's site.
I used to buy things from CompUSA, but then that went away.

@PopularDemand one should not buy a desktop computer. One should build a desktop computer. (:

Then it suddenly came back, and that greatly confused me.

Store-wise, I <3 MicroCenter.

@TimStone Pffft.... real man buy and assemble their own LCD monitors

4:18 PM
@rchern Ugh. I did that in middle school and somehow spent more than I would have for a comparable computer from Dell or Compaq.

@PopularDemand we have a handful of Macs and a few PC laptops, and a Dell VMware server. The Macs were obviously bough from Apple, the PCs from CompUSA or BestBuy

@YiJiang Real men who aren't lazy. Key factor.

@TimStone It came back?

Well, real woman does too. @rchern

@TheUnhandledException Er, I meant for personal use, not business.

4:19 PM
@PopularDemand Yeah, there is a store....in this general area of the country.

I'm considering breaking my lifetime streak of not participating in Black Friday.

Apparently it's owned by the company that owns Tiger Direct, I think?

@PopularDemand Oh. Sorry. </cto> :-)

Say, when is this Thanksgiving thing?

@TheUnhandledException 's all good.

4:20 PM
MicroCenter is comparable and sometimes cheaper than NewEgg. And even if something may be a couple dollars more, being able to drive 2 minutes to the store instead of waiting for shipping is fabulous.

@rchern Just looked them up. Sadly, they don't have those where I live.

@rchern Everything ships from a very close warehouse, so if I order in the morning I typically get Newegg shipments the next day. Which is likely less than the amount of time it'd take for me to convince myself to drive out to the store.

All our stuff's consumer grade anyway, prosumer at best for our designers' workstations. Our business servers are all dedicated hosting so we don't purchase those

Though, oddly, they did have one right by where I grew up, and one near where I lived before I moved here, and I still wasn't really aware of their brand. The name was familiar, that was about it.

Which is extra cool because I only pay for normal 3-5 day shipping.

4:22 PM
@TimStone Nice!
What the... "Black November"?

Sure. When I built my computer about a year and half ago, I went through and figured out cost with both MicroCenter and NewEgg. Got all but 2 or 3 things from MicroCenter.

Note to self: start shopping process after getting home from work today.

@PopularDemand I know, I keep missing out on the deals because all of the advertisement come flying into my inbox, and then I go play Minecraft.

This computer is three years old, bought when I'm 13, so no, I'm not too ashamed that I didn't build it myself

OK headed to a meeting. Catch everyone later! I'll be looking fro help with XMPP later today, specifically those with Open ID expertise :-D

4:24 PM
@TheUnhandledException Have uh...fun! :P

@TheUnhandledException Stop bragging about how you have social interaction with other human beings.
You're not that special.

The hell... Impluse is selling RA3 and it's expansion at the same price

Sure it's a sale, but... it still feels like a rip off

Red Alert 3? Does that exist?

4:25 PM
@PopularDemand Red Alert 3

HAHA. @PopularDemand I am now leaving the social interaction I have with others to do boring business stuff ;-)

Seems like it does.
Ah, good.

G'bye.

$10 for C&C RA3, RA3 Uprising and C&C4

4:26 PM
Hm, I could do with some C&C goodness.

@YiJiang You're only 16 years old?

@drachenstern Funny how long it takes people to realize; it's written on my profile and all

I knew. :P

Q: Why do Facebook users sometimes end up on my site when they enter www.facebook.com in their browser?

PeterEvery few weeks I get an email (usually a very unpleasant one) or sometimes even a phone call from a Facebook user who believes that I am "hacking" their internet. They come to this conclusion after they end up on my site after entering www.facebook.com. Looking at my server logs, it seems like...

@drachenstern The comments about being in school didn't tip you off?

I don't go around reading everyone's profiles ...

4:28 PM
@drachenstern I do

@PopularDemand when were they made? I literally just got here

I guess you haven't been hanging around here as long as most.

> Oh my gawd, the internet is failing.. :P – Arenstar ↵ yesterday

I don't always scroll up

@drachenstern I meant over the past several weeks. It comes up once in a while.

4:29 PM
yesterday, by Yi Jiang
@radp There's a grammar nazi in my class. I would annoy him by going up to him and whisper softly "dices" into his ear
Starred x6

@PopularDemand nah, I don't see them that often I guess.
@YiJiang what's wrong with that being an English class in Uni?

@drachenstern What they have English class in Universities?

I think I might've starred that one too :p
but no, I didn't associate "school comments" with "being 16" ... and not reading profees, so there you go.

@YiJiang I still think everyone else missed the headline there.
That is: you're repeatedly going up to some dude and whispering softly into his ear.

@YiJiang For some reason American universities feel that it's unsafe to assume that students know how to write five-paragraph essays by the time that they get to that level, so English classes are a necessity.

4:31 PM
@PopularDemand I was gonna let it go, I mean, to each his own and everything :p

@PopularDemand Meh... it's a boy's school.

@PopularDemand This is what I found hilarious about it.

@TimStone They're right

@TimStone @YiJiang a frigging MANDATED requirement no less
@MichaelMrozek +1

@TimStone You've seen the ReadWriteWeb story on that a while back?

4:32 PM
@MichaelMrozek Unfortunately yes. :P

They did a story on Facebook ID, and somehow that got more SEO juice than Facebook's login page

@YiJiang I'm not sure, it sounds familiar.

Resulting in the page getting flooded with "Give me back my Facebook login" comments

@drachenstern I skipped it, thankfully.

They had to stick a giant "We are not Facebook" message in the middle of the story

4:33 PM
@TimStone I did a 2yr college first (well, second actually, but the 1.xGPA will not be discussed ~ yet) so there was no skipping

Ah. I had...an abundance of AP credit.

@TimStone This is the stor: readwriteweb.com/archives/…
> Dear visitors from Google. This site is not Facebook. This is a website called ReadWriteWeb that reports on news about Facebook and other Internet services...

@YiJiang Funny... in a sad way.

Why oh why do I bother contacting AT&T support?
I know it isn't going to go well.

Ah yeah, I remember that now, hahah.

4:34 PM
@PopularDemand Very

@rchern Why are you contacting AT&T support?

My home internet connection is down

Their reporting on this is much much more interesting: readwriteweb.com/archives/how_google_failed_internet_meme.php
> It was like we had unearthed a long-lost city, the Atlantis of the Internet. But instead of treasures and gold we'd found a steady deluge of confused and frustrated users who had tried everything they knew to do and just wanted to log in to Facebook, damnit.

@rchern I've wondered the same thing.

@YiJiang I'd forgotten about that. It made me seriously worry about the intelligence of the average facebook user
I knew somebody in high school who didn't know how to open their AIM client, it just autostarted with their computer. If they closed it they just restarted

4:37 PM
@rchern Ah...Is AT&T your only choice for home internet?

@MichaelMrozek You are filling me with regret for once telling a MSO user "I think you may be underestimating the intelligence of the average Internet user."
In my defense, I said "I can't believe I'm about to say this" first, and I really meant "the average Stack Exchange user."

No. Lesser of the evils though. I switched from Charter a couple years ago.

@PopularDemand It's pretty hard to underestimate that

@MichaelMrozek You have to worry about that? I can give you better things to worry about

I like to think the average SE user is somewhat more intelligent than the average Facebook user though

4:38 PM

@PopularDemand The apporpirate word there is "overestimating"

@drachenstern Heh.

@rchern Oh, you're in one of those scary kind of service areas. That sucks. :(

Jin now appears three times on the Featured User page

Does that mean he's hit the jackpot?

4:40 PM
@TimStone Hehe... maybe I should ask a question about the Featured User algorithm

scary kind of service areas?

@YiJiang Dupe of you:
5 hours ago, by Yi Jiang
It's funny how @Jin now pops up three times as "featured user" on stackexchange.com, just because of the new design threads he open for each of the graduating sites

I HATE EXCEL MDI
ffs

@rchern The ones with terrible, terrible ISP choices with no hope of escape.

@PopularDemand I know, but nobody was there to hear it back then
I'm asking a question now

4:42 PM
He feeds on our acknowledgment.

@TimStone I use Comcast because, of my two choices, they were the first ones to cave to my constant phone calls and finally stop saying "we don't service your neighborhood" and give me internet. It seriously took about a month

ISPs around the country generally seem to be the lesser of available evils.

Responses such as "you're lying, all my neighbors use you" didn't seem to help

Ah, good ol' Comcast, heh.

Worst. Company. Ever.

4:45 PM
@rchern This is true, but I've heard numerous bad things about both of your choices. It's entirely possible that those stories aren't true in your area, though.
@PopularDemand Naw, don't say that...

@rchern Given the choice to choose getting my TCP/IP delivered via shards of broken and brittle glass and CenturyLink, I choose CenturyLink. However, given the choice of Any Other Provider, I choose AOP.

(OK do, but do it quietly)

0
Q: How are the "Featured Users" on StackExchange.com chosen?

Yi JiangOr rather, why does Jin appear three times there, just because he posted the design concepts for each of the graduating StackExchange sites on their respective Metas?

@TimStone What lie say you?

..Err?

4:47 PM
@TimStone Lesser of the evils. shrugs ):

I just realized, it's because I was using a tag set... nah, it's still an interesting question.

Hello Seattle

@TimStone That the stories aren't true ...
@Chacha102 So should I respond since I'm not in Seattle? Should I say hello to Seattle too? I'm confused on the protocol here... I'll just ACK

@drachenstern I just left the door open for that possibility, and it seems @rchern promptly shut it. :P
'Ello @Chacha102

@drachenstern Say hello to Seattle too

4:49 PM
@rchern Yeah, that's unfortunate. You can go out and get a really long fiber optic cable and I can patch you in over here if you want. But you might have to exchange some chili in the process.
2

@Chacha102 Hellllloooooooooooo.... Seattle.
How close is Seattle to Microsoft's Redmond campus anyway?

@TimStone Would probably be worth it. (;
And with that, stir time!
@YiJiang very close.

4:52 PM
@Chacha102 Hello to Seattle too

@rchern Don't know why you'd pop back here every few minutes just to announce that you'd have to go back and stir again :P

Heh.

@YiJiang 1. We're that entertaining. 2. She's trying to make us hungry so we're too distracted to make jokes.

@TimStone mentioning chili made me realize the time.

Good thing I like to barter with food then.

4:53 PM
Should've gone earlier. Now I'll just wait til the top of the hour when I have to put some in little cups for the judges.

Chili! Chili! It's chili stirring time @rchern!

Can someone mirror that on imgur please?

http://i.imgur.com/78MXQ.jpg @rchern There we go

hehe
that's the bad part about not remoting into my home pc, web filters

4:56 PM
@Chacha102 Wow, not just normal demotivational, it's very demotivational.com

@YiJiang facepaws

@YiJiang Someday, if you're on your very best behavior, rchern may give you the password to ExceptionallyDemotivational.com.

You cannot imagine how disappointed I am when Google fails to translate icanhazcheezeburger into Chinese. How am I going to explain this meme now if even the almighty power of Google fails?

@YiJiang I'll give you a hint, exceptionallydemotivational.com has a lot of quotes from me

我能有芝士汉堡 just doesn't sound right. (Google translates: I can have cheese burger)

5:02 PM
demotivational posters are awesome

Q: how to work with marquee tag?

aaaaawhen one marquee leaves the screen then after a short time gap it enters from another side. is there any way to reduce this time??????????

Tell me again, what year is this?

1997 baby, oh yeah!
oh wait, no it isn't, my bad!
@YiJiang Can bad grammar meme's really be translated?

@drachenstern Well yes, sort of. As you can see, the translator correctly picked up the incorrect grammar

@YiJiang I question why anyone would want to use <marquee>, but if you are going to use it, that's a legit question.

The best you could do is to find some similar speech transliteration in Chinese that would allow you to demonstrate the laziness... sort of
@YiJiang that's my point ;)

5:08 PM
@PopularDemand Why would you assume it's anything other than a joke? It's asked by an unreg. user with the username aaaaa, who speaks apparently good English, but seems to have gotten his keyboard jammed on the question mark key when submitting the question

@YiJiang I didn't actually click the link.
Okay, now I did. I'm tempted to upvote.
Especially since it turns out there's a real answer.

@Chacha102 Nice!

Oh man, the room with all the chili in it smells so yummy hehe

Oh, yah...your chili cook-off. Good thing I'm not there...I couldn't resist, but I don't think my tummy could keep it down today. :)

Speaking of rchern evilly tempting me with the thought of food...I should probably grab lunch soon before I have to get on that conference call, hrm.

5:12 PM
Nothing I do is evil!

@rchern I still maintain that people who actually likes eating chili are masochists and like to inflict self torture on their tongue

@YiJiang, seriously, what kind of chili do you eat‽
3

@YiJiang You've never had good homemade chili have you?

I think it's this cultivar:
The cayenne pepper—also known as the Guinea spice, Cow Horn Pepper, aleva or bird pepper or, especially in its powdered form, red pepper—is a hot, red chili pepper used to flavor dishes and for medicinal purposes. Named for the city of Cayenne in French Guiana, it is a cultivar of Capsicum annuum related to bell peppers, jalapeños, and others. The Capsicum genus is in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The fruits are generally dried and ground, or pulped and baked into cakes, which are then ground and sifted to make the powdered spice of the same name. Cayenne is used in cooking spicy d...
Or maybe it's the Japanese one

@rchern You should apply for a job at Google, then.

5:17 PM
@PopularDemand She's already a shoo-in for the SO job

@MichaelMrozek They've already given her all the passwords. Now she has no choice but to work for SOIS

@YiJiang So chili in the US is like a stew, not the pepper.
@YiJiang however latin countries will often refer to the fruit as a chili, given it being the name for pepper in Spanish.

@drachenstern Oh, you mean this
Chili con carne (literally "Chili with meat", often known simply as chili) is a spicy stew. The name "chili con carne" is taken from Spanish, and means "peppers with meat." Traditional versions are made, minimally, from chili peppers, garlic, onions, and cumin, along with chopped or ground beef. Beans and tomatoes are frequently included. Variations, both geographic and personal, may involve different types of meat as well as a variety of other ingredients. It can be found worldwide in local variations and also in certain American-style fast-food restaurants. The variant recipes provoke...

@YiJiang something like that. Yes

You know, that actually makes a lot more sense now

5:20 PM
Variations, both geographic and personal, is the key phrase

I had no idea what you were talking about, cooking the chili plant

On account of the preparation and what not?
Heh :P

@drachenstern I've actually never heard of the word chili been used to refer to anything other than the plant

and now you have.

@YiJiang Yeah, after the chili pepper has been boiled for a few hours, rchern pokes a hole in the bottom and squeezes out the pure capsaicin....

5:21 PM
@PopularDemand You know, that sounds like torture... :P

@YiJiang For you, maybe. rchern likes to have it as shots.

@YiJiang so are you in Singapore then?

@PopularDemand I hear she throws a little spiced rum in there and calls it a Hot Tamale.

@drachenstern Yes I am, although I'll be flying back to China next week

@PopularDemand Is she the chat.meta.SO "Chick Norris"?
@YiJiang can you visit one of these locations? chilis.sg/menu/sss.html and have a Terlingua Chili?

5:24 PM
stealth edit

@drachenstern What's so special about that?

@YiJiang I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about.

@YiJiang be a good first taste if you've never had a chili
they don't make a bad chili, but it's commercial

Damn you IPN Simulator! Why must you taunt me

Now @rchern would come in and wonder what all those deleted messages were about

5:26 PM
@YiJiang She can just use her secret mod powers to read them anyway

@MichaelMrozek Oh noes! Goes off to plan nuclear strike on SOIS's datacenters

Anyone up for a simple SVN question?

@PopularDemand I know a site that rocks at those: stackoverflow.com/questions/ask?tags=svn

@PopularDemand Sure, why not.

@PopularDemand The answer is, as always, move to mercurial

5:35 PM
And by mercurial, he means git

I created a file Mroozek$Barchern.properties, put something in it, checked it in. Then I realized that I didn't need Mroozek$Barchern.properties, just Mroozek.properties.

Similar to how when people say "vim" they really mean "emacs"
svn mv?

How can I tell SVN to consider the original file no-longer-used?
Mroozek.properties already existed, so I don't think moving is the answer.

svn rm --keep-local (assuming you don't want to erase the original, you just want it unversioned)

--keep-local, eh? I'll check that out. Thanks.

5:37 PM
Ok so wait. Let me catch up here. Why am I applying for a job at Google? What SO job am I a shoo-in for? LMAO @ Chick Norris. wonders what those deleted messages were about. Does not have mod powers here. Why is it Mroozek with the extra o @PopularDemand?
</catch-up>

I would be okay with erasing the original entirely, but that's not possible, is it?
@rchern ...just woke up from the too-many-capsaicin-shots coma, did you?

I think it's called svn obliviate, but I think it's only in the dev version of svn, they're still working on it

@rchern idk, mod, yw, nothing (waves hand), yet, idk but funny

It's possible to do it manually if you have root access to the svn repo, but it's not fun

@drachenstern Well done. I approve. Hehe.

5:38 PM
@PopularDemand unless it has recriminating evidence, leave it in the svn history and just delete it ...

@rchern Meh, it turns out I had absolutely no idea what a "chili" is

So I saw.

5:41 PM
Yay! More images I can't see! (;

It's a good one, too!

bah, merely colbert with a flaming sword of truthiness and a shield with a hawk and wearig USA armor
almost is motivational, is the sad part

Meh.

@drachenstern Great description, but you forgot the important part: Stephen Colbert - Trolling Congress since 2005.

5:46 PM
I like the way the hilt of the sword is done

Hmmm... going back to China again means I need a solution to this:
1
Q: Preventing feed URL from from being routed through proxy in Google Reader

Yi JiangI've noticed that when I click through to the actual posts of several of my feeds I'm subscribing to in Google Reader, I will get fed through a certain feedproxy.google.com link before been redirected to the actual site. While this doesn't affect normal usage, in a recent visit to China I found...

The GFW is a absolute PITA

The best demotivational posters are partially motivational

@drachenstern A hawk?

@drachenstern Oh, hey...it's a microphone.

@PopularDemand well it certainly doesn't appear to be an Eagle the way it's portrayed. I presume them to be more majestic, especially when Colbert has them done
so I goto open a page for adding features (one of which is "mark reviewed" and see two identical CSS blocks with the following selectors: .accHeader, .accordion-header, .accordion-super-header { and .accHeaderReviewed, .accordion-headerReviewed, .accordion-super-headerReviewed { ... apparently inheritance is not high on the list?

5:54 PM
super header!

hehehe, I think boredom struck that day

I went ahead and called a method in the configuration parser I was cleaning up "performMagic"

I should do that :p ... I also implement event handlers in my custom controls, so I don't have to deep parse my server controls for elements, in case, ya know, I want to change something. I see them write code that bypasses my handy event handler and that deep parses the control structure of the nested elements. I cry a little those days.

Hmm... repiping all my RSS feeds through Yahoo Pipes isn't very fun at all
