@Bart I'm kind of disappointed. The article promises Matrix dodges. I'm not seeing those
Other than that though, it looks interesting.
How long did it take to build the set up?

Someone has been watching to many talking head news channels.

1:41 AM
@Braiam Ah, that's what I thot.
@Cupcake Why?

user163250
@bjb568 did you not see the list of questions that the OP is asking?

2:00 AM
I agree that it's way too broad, but I can either a) close it as too broad or b) do nothing. A would probably not do much to it since there's no horrible answers to be shut off. It's a great Q&A (tho off-topic) and an ugly banner from B would look... ugly.
No reason to do anything if there is no reason to do anything, I say.

user163250
As mentioned above, Git tags (and branches) don't have a "size". They're simply pointers to commits. They're names. Asking about the size of a tag is like asking about the weight of a person's name. Also, "do a git size" doesn't make much sense, as there is no git size command. If you mean git count-objects, please say git count-objects. — Chris 13 mins ago

user163250
That comment pretty much sums up everything wrong with that question.

2:16 AM
Why does everybody know so much about git? The only thing I know is:
I just push the commit button and I'm fine...
:P

@bjb568 Is that GitHub for Mac/Windows? Eww...

user163250

user163250
2:37 AM
@bjb568 why yes...yes it is.

user163250
@Braiam needs moar tabs.

@Cupcake I'm too lazy to press the combination...

@Cupcake no link :/

user163250
2:43 AM
@Braiam Flag it as spam anyways, the spammer must've forgot that part.

user163250
It fits the typical spam pattern.

user163250
Meh...LVQ?

user163250
But really, we want the spam algorithms to apply to this, don't we?

user163250
-100 rep to account and all that jazz?

user163250
I don't know...without the link, I suppose it can be considered abuse of the flag...I dunno :P

2:49 AM
Where in the flag reason does it say spam requires a link? It still advertises a product.

@Cupcake All hail the new Low Very Quality flag!

user163250
@bjb568 ahahahahahahahahahaha

@Cupcake is the answer link-only, or just crap-because-the-question-is-bad?

user163250
@JanDvorak I don't usually do anything with the answers to recommendation questions, because by definition, the answers will often be link-only.

user163250
The OP gets exactly what they asked for.

The answerer has 13k. Doesn't it mean he should have known better?

Q: Let's have an explicit triage system for questions from new users

Shog9This is a follow-up feature-request based on: How can we make First Posts review actually useful? - big thanks to everyone who participated there, I've tried to incorporate the feedback into the design below. I've spent the past few weeks thinking about how we can do a better job of handling que...

Shog should totally make that featured

kinda makes more sense to do it after something is implemented, no?

well, you are expecting feedback before you implement it?

yes

3:19 AM
yeah feature it beforehand too.
not everyone trolls meta.
and this is a big change.

@ɥʇǝS only the unicorns...

I agree. Get lots of feedback.

@Shog9 Since when could you vote from the LQP queue? Did I miss something in one of your posts again?

You can't. I want to, tho.

user163250
That would be awesome.

It would save soooooooooo much time!

user163250

user202362
3:34 AM
you can ask 1 question that's strictly speaking not exactly relevant to SO and help 1000 people or you can ask 10 questions that fit exactly on SO but really helps no one but yourself

user163250
Shog mentioned something like that somewhere...

user163250
Something like: "there are thousands of questions that help only 1 or 2 people, but taken altogether, they collectively help a lot..."

user163250
Or something like that.

Why is this answer so controversial?

@bjb568 it's only a 5upvote/4downvote ratio... hardly that controversial

3:44 AM
Not a lot, but still...
And why can't I easily see vote count on MSE? >:(

I don't know why this answer has so many downvotes. (33 upvotes/43 downvotes) It's correct, and accepted, and practically says the same thing Brad said in a much shorter fashion and his answer has like +50..

I upvoted it before it dipped negative...
There are stupids on meta.

user163250
@VotetoClose deep negative score accepted answer...impressive.

@bjb568 you're so close, just 108 rep away

Why do I need rep to see non-sensitive data? >:(

3:51 AM
@VotetoClose because it explains stuff, while you only make some broad statements, such as that half of Brad's answer is "not the real issue", and you seem to be implying "accepting is W.R.O.N.G" from "should have been rejected as too minor"

oh wow, @ShadowWizard has a binding close vote for tags support and discussion on MSE meta.stackexchange.com/questions/236508/…
@JanDvorak Ok , thanks

user163250
This needs to be shutdown if anyone has close votes: stackoverflow.com/questions/24748977/…

Done.
Goodnight.

killed it.

4:44 AM
@ɥʇǝS the post you're reading is in regards to the First Posts queue

Typo maybe?

YAY! I got the realtime tab restart working. Also, Websockets are now officially fixed.

@ɥʇǝS yup

Because it exists.

> This bounty is for drawing attention to my answer. Look, it has pictures! :D Also, I explain that there are 3 branches involved, and that a local remote-tracking branch is not the same thing as the remote branch that it tracks.

5:34 AM
@Cupcake whom are you going to award it to?

user163250
Probably to the person who first answered with git push --delete.

user163250
Lemme see, I think that was...

If you experience a bunch of downvotes in the next 7 days... people do think it's a big no-no.

@JanDvorak according to this it's ok(-ish?):

A: Is it ok to start a bounty in a question you have answered to promote your answer?

Second RikudoIt's a calculated investment. If you think that by investing 50 reputation, you'll earn yourself more than 5 votes, go ahead. Your bounty might just attract an even better answer. My $.02: Go for it!

@Cupcake only if you trust yourself enough to assume your answer is worth ten extra upvotes from the bounty.

user163250
True.

which may prove to be incorrect

@chmod711telkitty could be better if the cat extended to try and bite the hand. Then we would had a xenomorph shark/cat ibrid

7:56 AM
I came here to gripe, but I see this is about animal cruelty.
Which is cool, because I have a lot of photos about feeding cats to sharks. And humans to cats. That sounds like more fun than griping.

8:04 AM
@Bart I don't know, there are some freakish weirdos out there...

Anyway, for the Voigt-Kampfers among you -- yes I am a real person and I have a cat and my dad is in the Mayo Clinic and here's a picture I managed to pose my cat who does not sit still for anything, with mayo clinic books to cheer him up:

user163250
I see your cat has +10 intelligence spectacles.

user163250
Just like Bart.

Which is off topic but, I am a crusader for bringing the humanity (or whatever) back into the system. As those following know. And it's hard.
I caught her asleep and was surprised I managed to plant the books

user163250
Humanity didn't scale with the increase in traffic that Stack Overflow got.

8:08 AM
And even more surprised that the glasses were tolerated but I couldn't really find a way to put them on her face, I just kind of balanced them.

user163250
Eternal September.

Better pictures taken when I don't have to construct like, a staging
More like "hey I snuck up on you over the back of the chair"

user163250
Do you like to sneak up on your cat like that?

Have you tried to take actual decent pictures of a cat?
Sneaking up is the only way.

user163250
Hmmm, I see.

8:10 AM
After the flash => whoosh.
No more cat in frame.
Goofy sometimes.

user163250
I see that you've turned our chat room into a cat room...

Anyway, I cite the whole cat pictures because they are universal currency of sorts, as in, eh, maybe you will realize that I am not just a glaring pixelated fork. I'm not hostile, just drawn that way.
But I do want to discuss meta issues, because meta issues are bringing me down of late.

user163250
The floor is yours sir: discuss.

user163250
Air thou grievances.

@Cupcake the h is silent

user163250
8:15 AM
@Bart that explains a lot.

So I'm a bit of a bleeding heart regarding new users, and this gets me into arguments with high rep users, who see nothing wrong with the way things are going.

It keeps happening. I win some, I lose some.

@HostileFork Meta shouldn't get you down. If it does, don't meta.

Yay, failed a "low quality" audit again... Now I have to wait 7 days to get the last 10 reviews for the 1k suggested edits one :-/

8:16 AM
are you reviewing for the badges?

Not really, just bad timing

@Bart Well it's watching what happens to new users on non meta, that gets me sucked into meta, where I've realized I don't really want to be, but I feel like that's giving up.

were you not careful enough to detect spam coming in?

Although I admit it is motivating to see that counter creeping closer to 1k

@HostileFork Got an example?

8:17 AM
Jan: the audit was in low quality:
http://stackoverflow.com/review/low-quality-posts/5300516
Imo, the answer was good, and linked to a article with free software that can solve part of the problem...

@Bart Well the recent one, is not a good example, because I managed to trigger a reopen that succeeded. After much gnashing of teeth and a 1 rep user who won't come back anyway because I wouldn't.

Borderline, but I didn't really think it warranted deletion
Apparently, I was wrong :P

user163250
@HostileFork I can relate.

Q: Provide a setting to hide Meta posts in the Community Bulletin

CupcakePlease provide an option to hide just Meta posts in the Community Bulletin from me. I still want to see Stack Overflow Blog posts though, because I want to stay up-to-date on new features and stuff. Jeff was right. Meta Is Murder. I've decided that I don't really want to participate in Meta all ...

@Cerbrus You can always flag for undeletion. If it gets declined, you will get an explanation

8:20 AM
Hm, it might be a good idea to do that instead of "looks ok", then, right?

What bothers me is... the people who get into this casual workflow and they cannot put themselves outside their body and worldview, and know what it feels like to see a bunch of kind of negative comments and "your question was put on hold by" 5 random pseudonyms...

user163250
@Cerbrus you're not supposed to get audits for deleted questions anymore.

if you notice an audit and do something it doesn't want you to do, you will be scorned.

I can understand failing that audit, by the way. Just kinda surprised it resulted in a (7-day) ban

user163250
@Cerbrus not sure if that change has been rolled out yet though.

8:21 AM
So, double bad timing xD

@Cerbrus you must have had a two-day ban recently due to multiple failed audits

I did, but that was a couple of weeks ago, already

Perhaps I'm odd because, I do like "strict machines" so to speak--I'm a computer programmer...but maybe I just really want there to be this hard line between the way something that you don't identify as sentient and is responding to you, vs. that which is sentient and responds

I can't recall a failed audit between the two.
Are "incorrect" reviews counted aside failed audits?

user163250
@HostileFork by the way, if you like helping teh n00bs...

Stack Overflow Academy

Proposed Q&A site for programmers who want to learn how to ask good questions on Stack Overflow

Currently in definition.

@Cerbrus if a moderator notices it, one bad review is enough to trigger a lengthy ban

This was automated

And I see things labeled as people--with like pictures of people, and such--acting like machines but who demonstrate no feelings, or sense of humor, with high reputations... becoming button-pushing "shoot you from space" automata.
The argument for why, usually boils down to "quality of the site".

user163250
@HostileFork well, like I pointed out earlier, kindness didn't scale with Stack Overflow.

user163250
It's crushed by the weight of 7000-8000 new questions per day.

8:25 AM
@Cerbrus then I don't think there's an effect.

user163250
You don't process that efficiently by being kind.

user163250
Kindness slows most janitors down.

I guess I'll just stay out of the low quality queue, it seems I'm most inaccurate in there

well, at least you can find a bunch of answers that shouldn't have been deleted if you encounter bad audits in the queue.

Oh, @Cupcake, do you happen to have a link to the change you mentioned?

8:27 AM
if you can dodge the audits while doing so, it's a win-win.

@Cupcake I'm skeptical, which is to say, I do not see kindness and scalability in opposition. I think if you do find them in opposition your process is not adapting or evolving well enough.

Hm, could do that, skip anything I'm not 200% certain about.

And lately -- sorry to any SE employees present -- but I haven't seen hardly any technical evolution on the front end here in years.

Q: Answers to deleted questions are still being used in review audits

CupcakeI was reviewing the low-quality queue, and this answer audit came up: I edited the pre-review state of the answer into the screenshot above, because I had already passed the obvious review audit at this point. Nowadays, it feels like... the Jesus booth from THX1138. :-/
Name 5 new chat features added in 2013.
Can't?
That's because I don't think 5 new chat features were added in 2013.

It's not like "Chat" is something you can do a lot of groundbreaking work on

Name 5 new site features added in 2013

Where's that list? ;-)

That wasn't "adding a site where you can upvote people answering hypothetical questions about what characters in fictional universes might have done if the plot of the movie they were in had been written by other people"

8:32 AM
Because there is a lot of that. I won't argue there isn't.

Heh, review suspensions were added in '13
@ tab-completion for tagging users --> '13

user163250
@HostileFork well, I'd love to hear more, but unfortunately it's time for me to go back and bake in the oven.

user163250
But feel free to continue the airing of teh grievances.

user163250
The Stack Exchange employees lurk here.

@Cerbrus You're going to next be counting things like "add invisible count of how many questions you can delete before you are question banned for reputation engineering" and call it a feature. :-? It's all spam management stuff and administrivia, meanwhile actual good new ideas as per mine are being downvo--er...equilibruim-voted to zero, not even on the table.

I wish Jeff hadn't left.
I guess, he has lots of cocaine to snort through $100s or somesuch, but hey. Come on. Why leave after the easy bit?
Brad Fitzpatrick did the same thing to LiveJournal. Ugh. Then the Russian Mafia bought it. You can't make this stuff up.

(nope, it doesn't seem that Laszlo changed username again)

@HostileFork I'll have a read through it when I have some time.

I don't have any super vested interest in StackOverflow etc. as an identity, and maybe I shouldn't get bent out of shape over "just some website" which is what people sometimes tell me.

That's generally a good idea, yes

But I guess I just... haven't seen better? I used to be a wikipedia activist, haven't touched it lately much.

8:44 AM
"actual good new ideas as per mine"... Never assume / say your idea is a good idea ;-) Stay modest. Just my $0.02

@Cerbrus I said it in chat to like, 3 people, after being downvoted. I started by saying I was venting. Let me vent!

Oh, I must've missed that

And it's also a good idea.
But the meta point is, whether it's good or not doesn't matter, because we aren't seeing devs dev-ing on the site
Unless it's April Fools or Hat day

Imo, it's "meh". If all the checkboxes are mandatory, they're just gonna click'm all: "tl;dr"

Then they're all in a tizzy about development all of a sudden.

8:46 AM
If they're not, they're going "Screw this, tl;dr"

@Cerbrus So says you. But it's data. It's testable. The point is about testable points of questioning, and the ability to feed back and analyze to see what sticks and what doesn't.

When have you ever read a piece of software's licence agreement?

@Cerbrus All the time, I make minor modifications and send them back to the developers prior to clicking. Why do you think I have all this spare time to argue on the Internets?
My cat and I live a life of luxury, I assure you.

Me jelly.

Anyways... I think, my idea deserves a chance. Because, the checkboxes are a kind of crowdsourced non-personal way of the "you're new here, I think this link answers why you don't know how to answer a question thing"...but vetting it.
I got all into this long, boring, programmer ego debate with a guy over whether his comment was useful here:
Ah, he probably deleted it.
Nevermind.
It's gone.
I guess, in a way, me whining now when I got my way, seems kind of lame

But I still say, the trend exists and yes, sometimes it errs on the side of being too mean, and yes, we can reverse it, but by then... maybe you lost a "customer"... and I think the robotic bits of triage are best pushed to be robotic.

@HostileFork I agree the activities could be a bit more visible, but it's not as if nothing is happening.

@Bart No, and well... I've faced people pushing the other direction of where we should put our trust. I wound up answering something and it got kind of long, so I made a blog post...and someone cut and pasted it to replace my link. And this gets back to my "hmm". Then I go re-watch Moon and Oblivion and The Matrix a few times. I'm suspicious when there's no new features.
O ye of little faith!! (Or rather, seems you merely have more faith in stackoverflow.com than hostilefork.com, so I guess Joel and Jeff are just cooler than me. :P) I'd say that links power the web - if I ever updated the article to improve it, following your suggestion I'd then have to improve it in two places. I empathize with your concern on general principle, but since there's no robots exclusion on hostilefork.com, Google (already cached) and archive.org (in a few months) will be able to bridge past any webmastering incompetence on my part... — HostileFork May 14 '10 at 14:12

I've lately wondered, if a belief I've sort of held as a true thing, isn't true...which is the whole "techies/nerds are the egalitarians of the world" premise. It's a nice belief, and I am a nerd, and I grew up with nerd friends. So I thought "yeah, we are better".
I found it interesting when they did traffic analysis of car algorithms, modeling drivers; where if you offer a good driving algorithm and just kind of repeat it a bunch of times, you see if all the cars were good drivers if it improved traffic throughput.
Not as strong an effect as you might think. In fact, adding paths in the network slowed it down often; doesn't matter who's driving.
Fewer intersections being the key.
Anyway, I am personally in a phase of wondering "what would even work". Like if I start arguing with someone about a question, and I could do a brain transplant so the other person thought like me (but with their experiences) and we kept talking... would we agree?
Lately, I am not so sure.

9:20 AM
@HostileFork Given how much I tend to disagree with myself ... I guess not. :)

@Bart Well, it sort of makes the nerd world takeover less appealing.

@HostileFork I'd say it's a pretty safe bet we're all nerds here to some extent. Some more than others. Have you see how much discussion the site generates? How much debate there is on Meta and in the chat? Then again, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Heck, I'd say it's a positive in most cases.
It's just not Utopia

@Bart Why doesn't the FAQ have a map to utopia somewhere? Beer volcanos, strippers, etc. Someone has to light a candle in the darkness.

:D
Problem with that is that it's perhaps your Utopia, but not mine. So you're already screwed there

@Bart In case my joke/allusion was not recognized: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster
Anyway, I have accomplished little, but we have all engaged in the trade of cat pictures, and time has passed. Tomorrow I will probably be as grumpy as I am tonight. But let us pretend there was something accomplished on the Internet.

A: Automated My Little Pony detection and classification

HostileForkCartoonists take particularly strong license in their drawings vs. an unretouched photo. Thus trying to identify Pinkie Pie by color doesn't do a lot of good in a frame where she has fallen into a vat of black paint. Or you might think you could identify Rarity by her horn, but consider the epi...

9:46 AM
@HostileFork I'm currently napping on a cloud... think the stick can still reach me at this altitude? Anyway, the real question is another - how could you reference specific episodes and names :P

@SPArchaeologist Actually hadn't seen it at the time of response, saw a couple later, it's a pretty funny show. I just made up what I said with minor googling.
I'd never heard of a "brony" or even knew what that was about, I was trying to be funny.
It's still funny, I think, regardless of me not realizing there was this cult thing going on.

@HostileFork don't really care about the whole brony tag. I just like the madness in the show.

@Stijn and he's watching chat .... seen that pattern before

Where else you can find an alien reference in a show that should be targeted to a younger audience?
or an A-Team reference

@Stijn it's most likely a troll. Better keep an eye over his activity.

Deleted within seconds. Still not sure how he got past the server filters.

@JanDvorak black magic of course

@Bart @ShadowWizard seems to be a spam bot

not really spam but yeah, useless troll/bot

11:14 AM
@Stijn Myeah, not surprised.

Booyeah!

sniff

@TimPost is your ISP also of the opinion that home servers are a no-no? I'm at 75 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up for that reason.

I should be getting 20 down
but I'm pretty sure that's the wifi

I only wish I had 5 Mbps upload so I could stream with better quality and still play multiplayer games :(

@3ventic what do you stream?

@chmod711telkitty You do pretty well in the latency department, that's for sure.

@JanDvorak games

I guessed, but which ones?

user202362
I am with an average ISP, thus I have average speed :D

11:23 AM
@3ventic It is, I go down to about 30 on wifi in my office. About 70 if I'm right next to the wap. I'm going to get one of those Asus mega wireless N routers, and run some cat 6 to my desk.

user202362
Also, only 50GB download during peak hours per month, so there is little point of having a really high download speed

@chmod711telkitty ew.

Usually I get around 15 Mbps down with wifi

@chmod711telkitty suffices for Youtube 24/7, though, doesn't it?

that's plenty for my purposes
6-7 is not
@JanDvorak Mass Effect, Payday 2
singleplayer games I'm testing
testing in the sense that is it good enough for me to play

yeah, I typically only use 18GB during peak hours per month since I hardly download movies or games any more. I watch videos online a lot though

I watch high quality streams on Twitch a lot
sometimes watching 2-3 at the same time
that's constant 8-12 Mbps download

@3ventic Never seen a video of either. Do you stream on Twitch?

@3ventic nice, thanks.
TIL the URL for profile pages on Twitch
I'm currently on a crappy connection, but I'll check it out when I get home.

Maybe I am suffering a mini mental break down after my last pet rooster is gone - I could not think of any movies or TV series that I want to watch & I could not find any game interesting enough to play.

11:38 AM
@chmod711telkitty go out
visit the nature

user202362
I did ... bought some hiking/bushwalking gears and my favourite food

user202362
nothing is interesting enough ... nothing! this is terrible.

is new rooster an option?
religion?

@chmod711telkitty have you tried geocaching?
i used to hate walking and since a few years i love it because of geocaching

@Stijn I have tried it. It gets you to places where you need to be careful while moving around (and I haven't even tried a 4 or 5). Not sure why I stopped, and I'll probably start again.

11:47 AM
@JanDvorak have you done any mega events? A few months ago we had one with WWI as the theme, over a hundred caches released in a radius of 30km, loads of people showed up, it's great fun

@Stijn We can do home servers, but it's a bit more expensive. They give you a /32 and really up your upload bandwidth. Not worth it, cheaper to just use a host.

@Stijn I've been on a meetup once. It was good, but 30km would be more than half of the city, so nothing that big.
