A: Minimum Reputation before site logo appears on Flair

rchernIf you read the comments on the blog post about the flair, Jeff says the minimum rep for a site to be included is 200. There are other options if you want to work around this.

I answered the question! >_>
i hate that the new imgur support on SO obscures the original URLs on all this stuff
Not a fan of it either
@Shog9: TinEye Reverse Image Search.
HA!
02:56
Problem... "fixed"
well, Outlook just crashed on me
that hasn't happened in a little while
it's... kinda thrilling
ooh! It restored my open windows!
now, how do i make that happen without crashing it?
To this day I don't know how to close Chrome without closing all my tabs, so I xkill it instead
options > basic > on startup > restore
single-window solution only
That single-window part sounds ungood
heh... Just realized that Alt+F brings up the little wrench menu in Chrome

A: What's the proper way to muddle mint for a julep or mojito?

PhilBest to use a wooden pestle, but the back end of a wooden utensile can get the job doen. Muddle the lime and sugar in the bottom of the glass first. Goal is to get a good syrup. Put a bit of mint (2 leaves) in last and lightly muddle so as not to break them up into bits. Add your ice to the t...

/me sits back and waits for mint to grow...
03:11
@Shog9 Oh, awesome
hey, waitaminute... didn't Chrome used to have two menus?
I just brought in some mint from the garden today. (:
yes, but not anymore
that was so Chrome 5
or something like that
huh
Not sure how I feel about the squished "edit" menu
On the one hand, it looks dumb and doesn't show accelerators or shortcut keys
on the other hand, I never use the edit menu
Is that in 7? It shows them in 6
6
They're all squished into one line: Edit [Cut|Copy|Paste]
Another tiny oddity: when you bring up the menu with the shortcut, the mouse cursor is locked into whatever shape it was in prior to until the menu is dismissed
03:19
gah, burning your tongue is the worst.
so, if it's over a text area, you get to click on menu items with the I-cursor
Both of those things sound like they're you-specific
I would screenshot my edit menu but it appears to be immune
@rchern burning your nose is worse
I don't see the shortcuts for the edit items, but I also don't see the cursor oddity
I'd write up detailed steps to reproduce, complete with screenshots and helpful voice-overs, but... meh.
03:21
oh, i take that back
i do see the cursor oddity
yay
has the best Chrome of all
I'd brag about IE9, but I just can't be bothered to set up another VM for it
i'll just stick with chrome dev
Is it already friday ? woohooo !
03:30
P.SE was quiet... too quiet... as though the site was holding its breath, waiting, dreading what was coming...
I just hate when people post their question as CW

Why are you guys in here at 9PM?
there is no afterhours drinking..
I wish it were 9pm here :)
04:33
no good taverns stop serving at 9pm...
it's only 10:34 here - that's at least four hours of drinking left!

8 hours later…

Good morning/afternoon/evening
12:28
@spoulson Hi, easier just to say 'hello' :)
@PiersMyers I'll go with just grumpf
Broken image here, although I copied the url to see it :) Yes, grumpf like that
wonder why it didn't work
And I wonder why it doesn't work after I've viewed it in the browser already, I thought that if the browser cached it, it could display it again
12:40
Boo, anti-hotlinking
where's the owner of this establishment - if they are going to have a day related name then they need to update it properly or just automate it. Still think this place should have been called The Foo Bar.
13:01
This week is starting out with a sucky finding. My index finger tip is numb from spray painting yesterday.
Did a little search and found this is really common and that the nerve damage may take years to restore full feeling.
13:11
@spoulson have you been tagging the walls in your neighbourhood again?
Argh, ANOTHER 58 page iTunes terms of service change preventing app installs?! Damn you Apple!
Yes, I was tagging some great C# code I wanted to share
Some people use blogs. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.
Actually, I did a little project over the weekend. I sprayed on frosting to my shower doors and glass. Looks great.
But apparently I crushed the nerve in my index finger after only 3 spray cans.
@spoulson didn't know you could get spray on frosting for shower doors. Why would you want them frosted - build up of lime scale or condensation will do the job for you
@spoulson sounds painful, look on the bright side, you still have 9 good fingers/thumbs
14:04
I think this user might be confused about the direction reputation is supposed to go:
2
We need a way to comment on profiles so I can say "you realize negative is actually bad, right?"
14:21
@MichaelMrozek I'd say that's a living proof that the "minimum reputation should be 1" decision was good; there will always be a troll attempting to go as low as possible. I'm positive the user knows it's bad, but somehow it makes him feel... special.
hi!
No ones here! :D
Hello! Looks like that :)
@PiersMyers Yeah, thanks for the good news. Always good being an optimist.
@PiersMyers But yeah, other than nerve damage, the project was a success. The doors look just like they were acid etched, but only cost ~$10. Lowes sells the stuff.
2
@MichaelMrozek Otz is Evan's middle name.
In spite of my answer on that LMSOTFY question, I wonder how long it'll be before someone publishes such an app. Rudeness never stopped anyone on the Interblags before.

Q: Will getting a Math degree help me as a programmer?

Sergio TapiaI'm two months away from getting my degree in Systems Engineering (which is to say, I learned how to code and code well using managed languages). The only reason I got into this career was because I wanted to create videogames. I know now that with my current skillset, I won't be able to create ...

@SergioTapia Migrate to Programmers....
@PopularDemand I was thinking if it had anything to do with Ötzi.
@Piskvor I'm not familiar with Ötzi.
Ă–tzi the Iceman ( ), Similaun Man, and Man from Hauslabjoch are modern names for a well-preserved natural mummy of a man who lived about 5,300 years ago. The mummy was found in September 1991 in the Schnalstal glacier in the Ă–tztal Alps, near Hauslabjoch on the border between Austria and Italy. The nickname comes from the Ă–tztal (Ă–tz valley), the region in which he was discovered. He is Europe's oldest natural human mummy, and has offered an unprecedented view of Chalcolithic (Copper Age) Europeans. His body and belongings are displayed in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzan...
What? I thought I posted it ON programmers. :/
How do I migrate?
14:43
@SergioTapia You can't yet, you'll have to repost it manually
@SergioTapia I don't think the migration path exists yet, but you can delete and post on Programmers.
You posted on SO.
@SergioTapia is such a trouble maker. ):
My question is getting voted to close, will it get moved once it reaches 5 votes?
@SergioTapia No. There is no migration path yet.
no. there is no migration paths for beta sites
14:51
Ha, Mrozek > Demand > chern
Are question migration paths planned for when stackexchange sites start to leave beta?
@bdonlan 99% sure the answer is yes, but I can't find the source. Anyone have it bookmarked?
There's a better answer somewhere where he talks about how there will only be migration paths that make sense (like not between programmers and cooking, since it's unlikely to be used much), but I found this at least:
4
A: can SO, SF, SU questions be migrated to beta sites?

Jeff AtwoodMigration paths won't be defined until sites are out of public beta. In the meantime I recommend deleting your question and re-asking it on the public beta, if you feel strongly it's a better fit there.

sounds reasonable
15:00
@MichaelMrozek How can I make French toast... programmatically?
(Step 1: find an old box with overheating problems and run SETI@home...)
@PopularDemand ...on a boat? Whoa, now *that*'s a wacky timezone you're in ;)
Seriously though, @MichaelMrozek, thanks for the link, I'm favoriting it.
Hello
hi chacha102
15:05
@Chacha102 Ahoy hoy!
I really like the new notification bar. It's really really handy,
What new notification bar?
The one on the upper left
you mean the SE Logo?
15:10
yeah
We really need a standard naming system for all of these features.
3
A: Now that we have a global inbox, do we still need the Top Bar notifications?

Popular Demand-1! Yes, we do! Please don't take away my top bar notifications! I like to do all my business on one site at a time; it's just how I keep mentally organized. I might look over all my notifications in the global inbox when I hit my first site of the day (SO), but I'm not going to check out any of...

I take names that describe what the product does 'Notification Bar' and replace it with what it looks like 'SE Logo'. For instance, I'm typing on a white book turned sideways!
I think "global inbox" is the commonly used term on meta
I don't get why people buy those boxes with cords coming out of them....
3
Q: Design pattern to handle settings in subclasses?

JolowDear friends, I have a small hierarchy of classes that all implement a common interface. Each of the concrete class needs to receive a settings structure containing for instance only public fields. The problem is that the setting structure has a part common to all classes has another part ...

@Chacha102 do you mean accordions? Maybe they like the sounds they make
15:17
@PiersMyers No, he means bagpipes.
@PopularDemand those are more bags than boxes
What in the world is the "top bar" in jjnguy's question? It sounds like a feature I've apparently somehow been missing this whole time
Can anyone think of confusing terms other than "top bar"? I don't know whether to ask a question just about that one thing, or make a more general SE glossary-type question.
Bah, this isn't working out as a MSO question. Forget it.
It sounds like he's describing the orange notification bar for things like when you get a new badge, but I've never gotten one of those to notify me about comments; that's what the envelope is for
I think there should be one instant notification system
Honestly, all the different ways confuse me.
15:29
The more users there are, the more use cases they'll get support requests for. It's a hairy problem, to be sure.
lol This reminds me of the my last job. Everyone had their own name for everything. It was very frustrating and confusing.
Someone should go make a bunch of screenshots and name everything
What do you all think of a "Stack Exchange glossary" question?
I feel like it would be too broad, but I keep coming back to the idea every few days.
I don't think it's really warranted. Most people would understand what you're talking about whatever you call it.
Hey guys! How's everyone doing today?
15:41
32k messages, 1k stars, and 4.7k messages per week. Nice Job guys
anybody have an ideas? stackoverflow.com/q/3800215/181481 ):
Busy day for me, can't help with message counts that much today :-)
@rchern Sorry, not sure given I'm not a .NET expert
+1 though and feel free to use my PHP interface in the meantime!
@TheUnhandledException you always say that but you end up here anyway :)
haha @PiersMyers
@PopularDemand Yes, it would be rather broad, but I also think it could be useful.
15:43
@PiersMyers Oh I'll be here, just lurking :-)
> Essentially, officials want Congress to require all services that enable communications — including encrypted e-mail transmitters like BlackBerry, social networking Web sites like Facebook and software that allows direct “peer to peer” messaging like Skype — to be technically capable of complying if served with a wiretap order. The mandate would include being able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages.
@TheUnhandledException, yeah, I know it is there, but dammit the favicons aren't going to change, I should be able to store them in the database and not make 6 http requests for the favicons every time someone pulls flair
> Let’s hope this goes nowhere. I’ll let Ben Franklin speak for me: “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
3
@rchern I know what you mean
shudders
@rchern where are you using icons on your app?
the site favicons
(the app is StackFlair)
@rchern I also know nothing about .NET but I also upvoted. I actually opened the Java API out of habit before realizing it wasn't going to do you any good, heh.
hehe
nope, not java
@Chacha102 Well, I'd like to see the technical implications of that. Isn't that the PGP situation in reverse? ("This program allows you to use encryption, and thus is outlawed in Northern Corea, Cuba, and USA")
15:50
@Chacha102 I just read about that today
@Piskvor They want PGP to have a backdoor!
Hmm, is a rep recalc performed automatically when you associate two external accounts that are both linked to SO accounts?
Then I haven't really answered this guy's question at all. Anyone else want to take a crack at it?
0
Q: 50 Reputation lost

Reality_RulesI associated my account with another yahoo account, and after that I lost 50 reputation. Why is it so?

@TheUnhandledException Yes, I understand that. I meant that some twenty years ago, PGP and its creator were under investigation for the exact opposite: exporting an encryption algo outside the USA.
@Piskvor oh, I misunderstood what you were saying
15:52
Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) is a data encryption and decryption computer program that provides cryptographic privacy and authentication for data communication. PGP is often used for signing, encrypting and decrypting e-mails to increase the security of e-mail communications. It was created by Philip Zimmermann in 1991. PGP and similar products follow the OpenPGP standard (RFC 4880) for encrypting and decrypting data. How PGP encryption works PGP encryption uses a serial combination of hashing, data compression, symmetric-key cryptography, and, finally, public-key cryptography; each step...
^^This.
I really should spend some time and get myself back near the top of the PHP chart
and possibly get to the top in another chart..
@Piskvor PGP is outlawed in the USA? News to me. I use it on a regular basis with my web host (DreamHost).
@spoulson It isn't outlawed
@spoulson Nope. The investigation centered around "is it legal to export strong crypto outside the USA"?
15:54
Besides, if US government outlawed technology like PGP there's be a major outrage, I would think.
@spoulson But there is a law trying to be passed that forces all direct communication methods to be able to be wiretapped if needed..
But I'm certain there are pesky governments (like N Korea) that want backdoors into everything.
@spoulson Like the USA :-(
RIM was in the new a few weeks go for striking a deal with Saudi Arabia to provide decrypted text messages of their customers.
@Chacha102 That's depressing. Thanks.
@spoulson Thats my job!
15:57
@Chacha102 To depress us? LOL
@Chacha102 wiretapping laws really disturb me.
@Chacha102 For instance, Maryland is recently known for enforce its anti-wiretapping laws in full force against anyone who videotapes a police officer. They managed to get the courts to allow it because they're monitoring with an electronic surveillance device.
I really need to build that Wordpress plugin to hook up my Google Shares with my Shares page
@spoulson It was "strongly hinted" that that would be overturned soon.
@spoulson No one has actually gone to jail for that yet? No?
16:00
(I lived near Maryland when that happened, so I was paying attention.)
@Chacha102 Not sure anyone went to jail, but the guy did have his stuff confiscated and charges placed.
@Chacha102 facing up to 5 years/$10k fines
@Chacha102 articles.baltimoresun.com/2010-06-01/news/… The guy did spend 26hrs in jail, tho.
@Chacha102 (beating a dead horse) articles.baltimoresun.com/2010-06-01/news/… Says he's facing 16 years inprisonment.
@spoulson I don't think that the point of the law is to be technically effective. I'd say the point is to terrorize the populace. After all, it's much easier to manipulate anyone into anything if they're in a situation like "ooh look, you've broken about 35 anti-terrorist laws, we should ship you to Gitmo, unless..." (and from the looks of it, you break at least three laws nowadays just by waking up).
@Piskvor That's the basic thinking about anti-terrorism. Lock 'em up now, think about it later.
@Piskvor Which is why we're losing civil liberties left and right.
By we, it's not just the US. Much of Europe faces the same pattern of government overruling.
I bookmarked this convo
uh oh
Is that bad? :)

You have reminded me of this occurrence and the resulting interview.

You should be able to edit a bookmark so we can expand the conversation
Okay, this shouldn't have taken me nearly as long to find as it did:

Q: Will it be possible to migrate questions between the trilogy and the Stack Exchange 2.0 sites?

GnoupiMay not be the best place to ask this, but my ask is mostly linked to the original trilogy. I haven't found duplicates as well. From what I understood, the Stack Exchange 2.0 sites will be hosted by the team, just like the trilogy. Will there be easy "bridges" between the trilogy and these new s...

@Chacha102 oh, that link to the comic and writer... I had seen that comic. I never knew the story the followed it. Incredible!
I've even commented on that question!
@PopularDemand Whoa. That feels like a page straight out of the local (that is, Moscow-directed) Secret Police's operating manual from the 1970s: never make any direct threats, but do everything to make the target's life miserable, and hint that forcible repression will be imminent.

Q: Automatically add category tag(s) to questions, or at least suggest them

Geoffrey ZhengIt seems almost all requests to add tag category/hierarchy/organization/etc have been shot down. Here's an example for my personal interest, very similar to a previous answer: On...

@PopularDemand Ah yes, that's the one I was thinking of

A: Will it be possible to migrate questions between the trilogy and the Stack Exchange 2.0 sites?

Jeff AtwoodYes, this will be possible. The trick here is that we'll only "unlock" question migration paths between sites that have an some kind of rational relationship, so the odds of that off-topic (but on-topic for the other network site) question being asked has some actual chance of occuring in the re...

@SergioTapia That's a duplicate, I'm just not sure where the other post is
Yeah, it says jeff doesn't want to have it implemented.
maybe it's just too hard?
@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I finally figured that out on my own. Thanks for the convenience link though.
Gasp, my bounty is going to expire and there are no new or updated answers. What a surprise.
@PopularDemand link?
It basically requires Jeff, and somehow I don't think he's super-excited about a +50 bounty.
16:30
Oh, right; bounties can be on other people's questions. I was wondering how I managed to miss your post in the list of 6 featured questions
That's odd, why didn't that link onebox?
Ah, different format.
FYI, if you copy a link from the "your bounty expires in 24 hours" banner, it won't onebox.

@Michael, now that this correct dupe is noted, I went to close based on it (since the other wasn't a feature-request, it didn't count), but found that it already thinks I voted to close. Not sure how that happened.
@LanceRoberts Which question are you referring to?
@PopularDemand, your link wasn't the only thing on the line, that's why it didn't onebox.

@rchern No, you can do a reply-to and a URL and it normally will onebox.
And I've been complaining since day one that it's hard to notice the "reply" icon, which overlaps the onebox, but nobody else cares. Or perhaps other people care but @balpha isn't one of them.
@PopularDemand It seems fine to me, it doesn't overlap anything
It's to the right of the onebox, if that's what you mean
@MichaelMrozek No, I mean the one at top left, not the one at bottom right.
@PopularDemand, look at the url, it isn't a link to the question.
Have a nice whatever-time-of-day-it-is-in-your-timezone everyone, read you later.
@rchern Yeah, that's why I said "different format" later.
See you, @Piskvor.

16:38
sigh. whenever my notifier says i got an upvote, i scurry to see if i got an answer too. but i'm only getting votes. ):
The main thing I'm taking away from this is rchern doesn't want upvotes. Ever again
):
I'm just annoyed that I can't get StackFlair.com going because it is pointed to this new hosting server and the code that has worked perfectly elsewhere doesn't work on this server.
@MichaelMrozek Perhaps they're downvotes.
@rchern Do you know why?
"Ha HA, we told you you got upvotes, but we've played you for the fool!"
16:40
If I knew why, I could probably fix it ):
@PopularDemand that's a pretty unfair thing to say
@rchern are .NET frameworks different between working/nonworking servers?
same version number. i guess i forgot to mention that
@rchern Or I wonder if some hotfix was applied that broke your one server.
@balpha Why, balpha? Why do you wrong us so?!
16:43
@rchern e.g. there was that shortcut icon vulnerability that was making security headlines a few weeks ago. MS workaround was a reg fix that essentially eliminated shortcut icons
due to an ico file parsing error allowed arbitrary code execution
@balpha I wasn't too serious about it, but I also don't think it's unfair; what do you mean?
@spoulson, hrmmmmm. got any info on that?
@spoulson, the thing that ticked me off about MS' fix was that they wouldn't do it for old versions, including 2000 SP4 which just went out of support a few months ago.
@LanceRoberts Win2000 end of life was July this year. Too bad. :)
@rchern looking up some info
@LanceRoberts Well, if they still supported versions that went out of support there wouldn't be much use in saying they're out of support
16:47
I can't respect companies that won't fix their bugs, there are a lot of us stuck with 2000 (and earlier).
@PopularDemand you claimed that I didn't care that the reply/onebox combination is suboptimal
I definitely have a problem with the whole "out-of-support" mindset.
@rchern microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS10-046.mspx <-- MS security bulletin on the vulnerability
@rchern Not sure if this is tied to your issue. But it seemed coincidental you're having problems with icons.
agreed. reading now (:
@rchern Some background on the implications of the bug: blog.trendmicro.com/…
16:51
@balpha I certainly feel that you care a great deal about the chat as a whole. But on that one particular subissue, I haven't gotten the impression that anyone cares at all except for me, and even I don't care very strongly.
@LanceRoberts on one hand, having previously been a sysadmin, I know where you're coming from. On the other hand, being a software house I wouldn't want to be stretched to support two generation old software because customers don't want to update.
@spoulson, it's not about not wanting to update, we have proprietary monolithic software (SCADA) which will only work on the old platform, and it will cost around 1.5 million to change. We'll be doing it in 4-5 years, but have to make it until then.
@LanceRoberts Sucks. That's why I always hated doing application support.
@LanceRoberts It seems like someone (vendor or customer) makes bad IT choices early on and paint themselves into a corner.
@spoulson absolutely, but that was the state of the art back then, they only had proprietary monolithic type systems. It's much better out there today.
@PopularDemand No, nobody cares. Including you. Because it really doesn't matter.
16:57
@LanceRoberts Got one word for you: Firewall. :)
@spoulson got two words for you: excise tax. :)
@spoulson, you might be on to something here.
I'm a bit out of date on updates and do not have that one installed.
server doesn't have it either unless it is bundled with something else though, oy
17:17
@rchern I would expect any respectable web host to be up to date with critical patches.
this isn't a hosting company i'm working with. and it isn't a high-use box. and since i brought it up, they're getting installed
so, i guess the news is both good and bad. and i'm no closer to having my code working where i want it to work
@rchern I'd be interested to see if these changes fixes or further breaks you.
hopefully the former...
oh, hi.
