Hey, @Jin.
So i don't understand what the purpose of this chat is?
@KronoS You and everyone else.
Jin
Jin
this particular room, or this chat program in general?
@Jin just the room
lol
Jin
Jin
4:20 AM
oh it's just a general hangout place. it's quiet now since it's Saturday night
General room, for people to be off-topic and socialize. There always seems to be one.
Jin
Jin
There was a lot of role-playing here when this room was first created...
I thought I'd take a break this week from hosting wild and crazy parties, to install Windows 7.
sounds bueno... so can I ask a general C code question?
@KronoS Go for it.
4:22 AM
First off... I'm a newbie at programming... just FYI
I wrote a C program and now I want use that program within another program.
how do I go about doing that?
Jin
Jin
You must plant an Inception.
You mean creating a program that refers to a separate program with its own main() and everything, or just making one that takes the functionality of the original one and integrates it into the new one?
lol
@PopularDemand not sure what you're saying, but I want the program that I write to call the other program and use function within it
Eh, they stopped teaching all but the bare minimum of C in school by the time I arrived. Can't help you, sorry.
lol ya... I get the feeling that this is going to be one of those programming languages that I'm not going to be using a lot

well, it is 4:30am on a Saturday night, so I don't suppose so...
It's 10:30 on a Sunday morning so it's possible
unless they're starting cooking...
Jin

designing the cooking site atm
Going for a kitchen shot?
Jin
Jin
8:36 AM
no. cooking book, restaurant menu theme
been looking at tons of them. in fact i have a stack of cooking magazines on my desk now, making me super hungry
Oh, I guess that works too.
Jin
Jin
it has to be generic, since cooking is pretty broad too.
basically, the theme as to appeal to most people.
one good thing about the Cooking site is that they have a domain picked and reserved already. :)
a pretty good one too. SeasonedAdvice.com
Yeah. envy
I'm really sorry for the domain name delays, @jin
Jin
Jin
oh np. it's not holding me back on anything.
i'm sure we'll pick a good one
i do like StageSix actually, it has a nice ring to it
Yeah, it's a pity it costs 1,990$ to take and may possibly infringe DivX's trademark on Stage6.
Speaking of domain names -- is there somebody here who isn't Jin?
I'd like to know in what order are proposals given to you in google.com/moderator/#16/e=31262
It's for a MSO post rather than actually name choosing

Can someone point me at the codes needed to do the [status-bywhatever] posts - you know the one's with the meta tag background?
you mean in chat @ChrisF?
Yes - I've looked in the formatting sandbox room, but can't view the source
[status-bla]
status-bla
just: [status-whatever] -- but alone, with nothing else
@balpha You have a typo. I think you meant:
status-balpha
3:58 PM
Also anyone know why I'm seeing @badp's post as a load of squares?
@ChrisF Because he posted some crazy charset chars :-)
@ChrisF has to be status-
status-cheers
:-)
@ChrisF I'm posting an image of @badp's posts
and here's the man himself
@TheUnhandledException I've been having intermittent problems with charsets in all browsers.
@ChrisF I have no idea wtf charset @badp used, lol!
Ah - I can see the words in the post now
It started with
I believe
4:01 PM
@TheUnhandledException it's whatever the browser falls back to
@TheUnhandledException It's not the same problem - I don't have that charset at all, but occasionally web sites that used to render OK just render as a series of squares. A restart usually cures it
@ChrisF Hmmm, that's really odd. What OS?
XP and all browsers (well Chrome, Firefox and IE)
@ChrisF Asked on SuperUser.com?
I've got a post for SU all typed up, but haven't posted it yet as it's very inconsistent
4:03 PM
Hopefully it won't appear as a series of squares! Kidding... ;-)
It also only seems to affect one or two sites. Luckily none of the trilogy or SE sites
@TheUnhandledException Funnily enough that was my reaction too
@ChrisF you have automatic encoding detection on
Flip text does something weird with the letter "J"
4:06 PM
if you force your browser to UTF-8 you'll be mostly fine
@badp In Chrome - Default encoding Western (ISO-8859-1)
@ChrisF UTF FTW!
you don't live in a world where 256 chars are enough -- switch to utf-8
2
Brb - restarting Chrome
Nope - still seeing squares. Do I need to install a specific font as well?
@ChrisF I don't think so... I'm on Mac OS X 10.5 though
4:19 PM
Never mind - not a big problem
@ChrisF does this site work for you?
Yes - apart from something funny with the letter "j"
ظ - uʍop ǝpısdn ǝʇıɹʍ
That was "write upside down - j" BTW
@ChrisF Same here
Josh - ɥsoظ
:-(
Going AFK, BRB

... I don't fully understand this latest ASP.Net security problem but trying to read up as much as possible, Are there any questions about it on Stack Overflow that I can read that may sum it up a little better? I would of thought they would be everywhere, but I can't seem to find any.
@Wil Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean?
Hey there @Fosco, how are you this Sunday?
@Wil Pro Webmasters would be a better place to look (or perhaps Server Fault). Super User explicitly doesn't cover the web
Good advice @ChrisF
Wil
Wil
ahh, meant stackoverflow... lol, not superuser, got that site stuck in my head!
Hi @TheUnhandledException.. it's all good, lots on the agenda
@Wil It still might be better to check Webmasters
@ChrisF Where is this webmasters you speak of?
@TheUnhandledException webmasters.stackexchange.com ;)
Wil
Wil
looking at both webmasters and serverfault now, thanks
Ah thanks, I should like to join this fanciful place and earn more "exp" than anyone MWA HA HA!
I mean... achem... meep?

Wil
4:42 PM
I just love these sites for learning... I didn't know much about HAproxy apart from it's name... typed it in to search for serverfault and suddenly I learn so much!
much better to learn from other questions/answers than general documentation!
3
@Wil I agree :-) have a star...
2, even.
@Wil Indeed - you're seeing what parts of the system people are having problems with
Wil
Wil
@ChrisF lol! thanks guys!
@Fosco Or 3 :-)
I'm liking this SE site already @ChrisF -- thanks! :-)
Wil
Wil
4:47 PM
well, can't seem to find any questions about this vulnerability... annoying :( I know that very few real sites will be affected, and given a solution, but I would still like to learn more e.g. why it even happens in the first place.
only seen a few tidbits of information here and there
@Wil Time to ask your own then! :-D
Why oh why does the software for my office's new printer take up nearly 500MB of space?
Wil
Wil
I wouldn't really know what to ask - really not my speciality, was just hoping to read general information about it... at the moment there is just the official forum, but it seems as if people are getting the runaround, being told solutions/fixes, along with the cause but not to much detail - which I can understand as they don't want people to recreate, but still, annoying if you are just trying to learn about this area!
I remmeber the days when printer drivers were distributed on 3.5" floppys...
Wil
Wil
@TheUnhandledException HP?
@Wil HAHAHA How'd you know??? :-)
Wil
Wil
4:52 PM
@TheUnhandledException lol! on my hate list!
@Wil Oops, and I just recommended this unit for purchase too :-)
@Wil That sounds like the prefect question, lol
Wil
Wil
Well, they are good printers, and the drivers "work",
Objective, detailed, etc.

Q: Software that test your memory in Mac?

ajsieI just bought some more Ram but the computer hangs up on and off. Are there any software that test RAM and see if they are corrupted or intact? I've got a Macbook Pro.

Wil
Wil
just come with so much rubbish
4:54 PM
Is there really nothing newer than memtestosx.org which looks like it hasn't been updated since 2008?
I'm not a Mac users, but thought that as Memtest was so big in the PC world they must have an OSX version
Wil
Wil
@ChrisF if it works, why change it! Memtest86 which I use all the time for PCs is still pretty much the same program for ages, only updates really are the identification names of CPU/memory types... does the same job
For intel macs, just like for PCs
@TheUnhandledException Cheers.
@Wil Well I thought so too, but wanted evidence to back me up
@ChrisF Sure thing. +1 on the answer BTW
I've used the Mac OS X memtest app to successfully diagnose memory errors on a PowerPC G4
The issue is you have to run it inside the OS, so you can't test all your RAM
4:58 PM
@TheUnhandledException Answer updated with credit where it's due
haha thanks :-)
@Wil At least for OS X, HP's installer is asking my permission to install their spyware rubbish :-)
"Would you like to install the HP customer participation software? This will give you rewards from HP but we'll install software which does unknown things to your machine and will pop up annoying messages asking you to complete marketing surveys. Please can we pester you? Pretty please? Pretty please with free ink on top??"
Wil
Wil
@TheUnhandledException FYI, they do a basic driver only package that is a few MB somewhere, you have to hunt for it... its only the full/retail package that comes with the rubbish
Man, 15.6K rep on SU. I am in awe @Chris :-)
Wil
Wil
@TheUnhandledException What model do you have, il try to find it for you?
@Wil Yeah, and the scanner software, fax software, etc. Silly all in one unit
@Wil Officejet 6500, but that's OK, thanks. I can easily clean out this crap if it bothers me. I just like to whine and complain ;-)
5:04 PM
@TheUnhandledException I have been at it for well over a year!
It's the 811 on Server Fault I'm amazed at.
@ChrisF I'm about to get yearling and I have 1789 rep, lol
@TheUnhandledException I'm still the only 10K+ rep user on SO and SU
People say I'm amazingly well balanced across SOFUM... but people with as much rep as you amaze me. Earning the relatively little rep I have was a challenge enough for me :-)
@TheUnhandledException You just need to answer everything you can, rather than looking for something to provide a "good" answer to. Breadth not depth.
Wil
Wil
I am under 1k at SO :( Just no good at those questions - the ones that I have got stuff on are usually ones that have been moved from SU!!
5:07 PM
@ChrisF Yes. I need moar time! :-)
I find that the rate at which I answer varies. Some times I can go for days without finding anything to answer and then when I do it hardly gets any rep
@ChrisF Yeah. I take breaks for weeks sometimes, which doesn't help :-)
For example I'm still less than half way to Epic on SO
I get a lot of enjoyment out of being part of the community, rep is not the driving factor for me
Wil
Wil
@TheUnhandledException FYI, I know you don't need it, but still, for next time - h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/… the enterprise driver is the same thing, but 70MB instead of over 300! looks to contain the bare minimum
5:09 PM
Which is why these days I spend 50% of my time or more on SO editing, not answering
@TheUnhandledException I'm on every day - but sometimes only for 5 minutes which isn't enough to answer anything sensibly.
I find enjoyment in helping people who post horribly written questions get good answers anyway :-)
@Wil Awesome thanks!
@TheUnhandledException The rep is nice - if only for the privileges (editing and the like) it gets you. My motivation is to keep my knowledge up to date by researching answers
@Wil it's not precisely in-depth technical info, but this is from the guys who found the exploit:
Reading other people's solutions it a good way to learn too. Which takes us back to @wil's post
Wil
Wil
5:11 PM
@TheUnhandledException How is the scanner? I am forever turning pages and waiting, I am thinking of buying the cheapest page feeding combo I can find (solo scanner ones are expensive) then just using it as a scanner...
@ChrisF Likewise. My goal was >1k on SOFUM so I could see splits. And I'm loving editing on SO so much I want >2k on SU and SF
@Wil I'll tell you in 10 minutes :-)
need to pull myself away from chat long enough to configure it, lol
Wil
Wil
@balpha thanks - I have watched that and it is very interesting (and scary!), but that is why I want to learn more - I know what/where they copy the little code from, but I just can't understand how that tiny little thing can lead to guessing a crypto string then taking over a web server!...
@TheUnhandledException lol, k
@TheUnhandledException Indeed. My immediate goal on the new sites is 1K, then 3K for when the rep boundaries reset to "normal" after the betas
@Wil it says at the end of the video that they want to release the paper & tool at netifera.com/research -- it's not there yet, though
Wil
Wil
It is like one day, someone saying to you, 1+1=3, but here is something that can make it 1+1=2 again... I understand that it is fixed exactly by the released guide, but I just dont understand in the first place what caused it!
Thanks, I have downloaded it and been trying to mess around, but I just can't get it working! makes me wonder if half this attack is just hype
5:16 PM
what did you download?
the don't have the tool there yet
Wil
Wil
Yes they do! I am running it, the Oracle padding tool
> Looking for POET for ASP.net? follow @julianor for updates
that's all I see
Wil
Wil
ahh, didn't see that line, I am running the windows version from the front page
@Wil Make that 15 minutes, this printer doesn't want me to configure it. Shy I guess ;-)
Wil
Wil
didn't know there was a difference. No wonder I can't get it to work!
lol, no problem!
5:21 PM
Silly thing wants me to set up faxing first even though I don't think faxing will every work right for me, lol
Wil
Wil
:S
Anyone in here have VoIP (specifically Vonage) and able to fax over it?
because I never have been able to in 3+ years, lol
Wil
Wil
Il be back soon - got to go out :S
no VOIP, sorry :(
I'll @Wil you after I test scanning :-) Check back when you're, well, back!
> Memetest". Love the typo. – Daniel Beck 15 mins ago
:-D
5:36 PM
Damn VoIP routers being a pain in my neck. Gotta plug my workstation into one of them to diagnose network problems. Will probably kick me offline, if so brb...
Haha, of course as soon as I plug in to the VoIP network, it starts working, lol
Wil
Wil
6:10 PM
back
Welcome back @Wil
Just in time for my first scan result :-)
Scanned a photo, pretty crappy
I'll be sticking with our Epson Perfection 1200 Photo for photo scanning
At 1200 dpi, the photo's really pixelated
Wil
Wil
not what I wanted to hear :(
Well I'm going to try it at a lower DPI, just for chucks
Wil
Wil
I have an Epson CX6400 right now (multi function) and it is a pretty descent scanner, it just takes forever, and I have to scan about 20 documents a day, I usually leave it running and come back whenenver
@Wil What kind of documents?
at 200dpi, it looks pretty good
but for photos, I want at least 600dpi
for 200dpi this is freaking fast
Wil
Wil
6:20 PM
but it is a rubbish printer, and everytime you turn it on, it wastes ink, even if only scanning - so I just use it as a scanner!.. but I want to get a sheet feeder, however, they are so expensive... only cheap ones are with printers, so I want one that lets you scan even if you don't have ink
ahh, sorry, was that a typo above? you wrote 1200dpi... did you mean 120 then?
@TheUnhandledException that one
Nope, I meant 1200 :-)
I think this scanner's resolution is far less, so it used hardware scaling to "interploate" 1200dpi
Wil
Wil
getting confused! saying its bad at 1200dpi, but good at 200
as opposed to my Epson Scanner which is actually a 1200 DPI scanner
Wil
Wil
ahh, ok, makes sense!
Yeah the 200dpi looks good, but, it's only 200dpi :-)
so for a photo, it's not high enough res for archival purposes
Wil
Wil
6:22 PM
@TheUnhandledException for me, it is just bog standard letters and business documents I need to keep for legal reasons
invoices etc.
but it would be great for a quick scan, or for most color documents
I would say for those, this would be great.
$99 at Office Depot
normally $150
This one was highly recommended due to it's ink savings. The guy claimed ~1200 pages per $35 black cartridge
Wil
Wil
wow... well, cheapest I have seen is around £70 for a sheet feeder (UK) so that is $110
Wil
Wil
lie!... maybe rated at that, doubt you will get anywhere near...
@Wil Yeah, but I'll be happy with half that :-)
Wil
Wil
6:25 PM
they always quote at 5% usage - an average document is at least 15-20% MINIMUM, so already a quarter... my Epson was rated at 600, I got about 100 with everyday documents when I used it back to back... when I started using it as a scanner only, it went down to 20 as it dropped ink every time you turned it on! Hate Epson ever since
So many low ratings on printers are from people who don't know how to set up printers under windows, lol
@Wil I was told this one will conserve ink when not printing, but YMMV
Wil
Wil
for everyday printing now, I use a laser for monochrome, and a cheap Epson for colour, sort of like putting my middle finger up at them as I have a cheap £20 Epson and use cheap ink - official one costs around £40 for a full set, fake is £6! only difference is red comes a little orange, but I never print a lot of pictures or anything important, so I would rather save money!
I've only used this one for ~10 minutes now, so I can't give a review yet @Wil :-) I'll let you know next week after it's had some use!
@Wil Good plan. I was pushing for a cheap laser, but was sold on this one instead, we'll se how it goes :-)
Wil
Wil
not heard YMMV before - like it!... well, maybe HP are different than Epson - still, just as a scanner, it is a VERY good price! hope I can find something like that over here
well, hope you get good usage out of it!
Thanks!
Right now I'm about to go get some good usage out of P.F. Chang's, HAR HAR!
@Wil -- Oooooooo! It can scan top-feed to PDF/TIFF/OCR!
Now that's useful!!!
well it would be useful if any text came out...
LOL
Wil
Wil
6:34 PM

OK. Neeeeever mind, lol. It feeds from the top for scanning but produces empty white images, HAHAHA
@Wil I love them, best food here in town

Mouth is watering - fancy a MSG fix now! lol
@Wil HAHA. :-)
Okay. I'm a dumba..
It does scan from the top feed. Just helps if you put the document in face up instead of face down. HAHAHA
Also, I can, from the printer, press a button and it scans to my workstation, opening up Preview/Photoshop/Acrobat on my workstation for me
I can choose from the printer which app will open on my workstation. That I like a lot!

Im not so keen! don't like devices being able to control my PC!
lol
6:39 PM
Haha, true...
but would be great for what you're asking for @Wil! Stand at the printer, feed documents, and they open on your workstation without switching back and forth from keyboard to document feeding :-)
I think it's probably the software on your workstation polling the printer, or something. I almost want to fire up wireshark and see how it's doing that
it's all over ethernet

I have seen it before in some office I support... I am sure the software works well, but I just don't trust things... I would rather it just sent to Email, USB stick or dropped in a network folder ( which many do), I just don't like applications that always listen and stuff - unless very light weight etc, but the fact that the suite takes all that space just makes me think it isn't well written
@Wil Yes, this can drop into a network folder also :-)

Just made a blog entry, anyone knew? Google Chrome comes with a PDF reader? It was hidden... blog.williamhilsum.com/2010/09/…
8:26 PM
@Wil Yeah, not very hidden either :)
I think Chrome also embeds its own Flash player
This way, those two extremely popular plugins get upgraded with the browser
8:38 PM
I don't have that magical plugin -_-. I use a greasemonkey extension that rewrites PDF urls to use Google Docs instead though
