What do you mean?

animuson
4 delete votes?
do you expect more or less?

Was just curious why it had 4 delete votes. I don't particularly care, but that question didn't seem like something that warranted deletion.

Myeah, don't really get the delete votes either

well, it would have been funny to get 5 closure votes from females on meta as their names would have been visible. :D

Five delete votes now :P
(none of them mine)

9:13 PM
the problem is that if it is deleted, someone will ask a similar question very soon.

I thought you couldn't vote to close a question as a duplicate of a question that has zero answers.
Is that not the case?
Am I crazy?

why would that be logical?

WAS THAT EVER A THING?!

@jadarnel27 You can if the question authors are the same. The rule also doesn't apply to moderators or Meta.

The wording of the dupe close message says "this question already has answers here: [link]." @Laszlo.
@animuson Oh, I didn't know about those exceptions. Thanks!
I saw it happen on Meta earlier, and I was confused =)

9:18 PM

@animuson Just curious, are deleted usernames linkified for mods?

@Undo As in a deleted user? No.

@animuson Oh, really? I thought mods had some kind of deleted-user history screen thing?

@Bart Haha, upvoted.

If we know the user ID, we can view a brief detail on why the user was deleted. But that's all.

9:21 PM
Great minds, and all that.

Ah

Heh, I like how Amazon didn't ask me to log in until after I placed the order. So, I don't need to prove who I am to place an order, but I do need to prove who I am in order to view the list of orders?

animuson: which amazon, co.uk?

Amazon.com

Heh, funny audit:
> but i dont know how to notifyProperyChange to update or rerender only being high

9:57 PM

No idea if this is a decent question or not, but I'd like an answer:

Q: Why 192.168.*.* for local addresses?

UndoThe standard I've seen so far is to use 192.168.*.* IP addresses for devices on the local network. Why this combination? If it were be, I would have chosen something simpler, like 1.0.*.*. What's the historical reason?

(also, possible supercollider material?)

@undo isn't that used because IANA decided it that way?

@rene Well yeah, but why?
I doubt they sat down and said, 'Ooh let's think up a random number!'

10:32 PM
1.0.*.* was already given to the whitehouse?

I dunno

@Undo I look forward to seeing your justification when someone asks you how that's a problem you're actually facing.

@Pops I'm sick and tired of typing a seemingly random set of numbers without knowing what they mean. Good enough?
Yay a Google it comment!
This is something that a simple google search would reveal. However, go look up information on RFC1918. — Jordan Head 1 min ago

I'm too lazy to do the math, but maybe it falls on an IP border? The class C IP range starts at 192.0.0.0.

10:36 PM
192.0.0.0/24 was a reserved block in the old days. Again, too lazy for math, but I suspect 168 is the next number after that block.
@Bart That just says that they did choose that IP range, not the reason why.

I'm guessing you're not accepting my "Why? Because they say so!" as an answer then @Pops? ;)

@Bart Sure they said so, but how did they come up with 192.168 of all numbers?

Like I said, it was the class C block.

bingo numbers?

Argh, now you've got me interested. I did the math (well, I found a calculator) and I /24 doesn't correspond to 168.

10:46 PM
scores from a darts game?

That would be 180

ten pin bowling?

Q: Why are home networks prefixed with 192.168?

alexWhy are home networks prefixed with 192.168 ? Why those numbers? For some historical reasons?

Q: Why 192.168.x.y for local ips?

JaseemSince this is the most common ip sequence in the world, why did we choose 192.168.x.y over 1.1 .x.y or something simple like that ? What is special about this ?

Yay cross site dupes don't count!

Because the original standard says so. — bmargulies Oct 12 '11 at 17:29
I like this guy

10:52 PM
lol
so, how is everyone doing?
okay...

I'm thinking @jadarnel27 is particularly brown. I'm particularly sleepy. And I can't speak for the rest.

@Amaterasu Bothered by the fact that I can't answer Undo's question.

A: Why 192.168.*.* for local addresses?

Mike PenningtonPlease use 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255, per RFC 6890, page 6. I used to think that answering historical questions was a good idea, but I would like to avoid doing this on a regular basis, due to bad help vampire experiences. It doesn't seem necessary in this case. 10.0.0.0/8 is simple enough.

sigh Really? Either answer it or close it :P

How is that an answer?

No idea.
@Bart It makes it even worse that it comes from a diamondy person :P
Quite frankly, you're not answering the question. I'm asking about the history of it, not for a simpler local range. If you don't think it's a good question, close it. — Undo 1 min ago

Those are the worst kinds of person @Undo. Except for @Pops though ..... ahem...

Could someone cast a downvote on that on my behalf? :P
101 rep isn't nearly as bad as 1, but it's still pretty unwieldy :P

I think antagonizing the mod is probably not the right approach there.

11:18 PM
@Pops the answers are a esoteric mix of bowling scores, shoe sizes and darts scores

Nor is soliciting downvotes from other users.

@jadarnel27 Probably not, but... it's not an answer :P
And I want to cast a downvote and can't ;(

poke the mod ..... poke the mod ...... wait, why am I suspended?

If I get suspended, there will be... problems :P

Then...discuss it with the mod? Saying "close it if you don't like it" takes the conversation in a very non constructive direction.

11:19 PM
@Undo problems?

@jadarnel27 yeah, you're right :P

You could also post on their meta about it. The purpose of beta is to establish the scope of the site.

@Amaterasu If someone suspended me for that one comment, it indicates issues.

ah i see

@jadarnel27 Yes, I could. The problem is that I have literally no weight there, and no one there has ever seen me before.

11:21 PM
On the one hand, you're right, it's not an answer. On the other -- and I don't know much about that site, but -- I suspect that its users aren't hanging around to answer history questions. Seems like he's making an effort to be helpful/welcoming.

Perhaps at the very least clarify to the moderator that you're looking for a motivation, if there is one. I.e. is it an arbitrary selection of numbers, or is there a certain logic behind that historical fact.

@Pops Oh, of course. It just seems a little... odd?
(to answer with a meta-ish response)
I completely respect you, and I don't want to sound otherwise. However, it does seem like answering a question with 'I'd rather not answer this as it is now, so here's an answer to a very related question' isn't quite right. I'm looking more for the motivation behind it, not necessarily history per se. — Undo 55 secs ago
^ Did I do good?
Or maybe I picked the wrong site?

Q: Historical question: Yes or no?

UndoI recently asked this question about the reasoning behind the choice of 192.168 as the standard internal IP block, and a moderator mentioned this: I used to think that answering historical questions was a good idea, but I would like to avoid doing this on a regular basis, due to bad help vamp...

Eh. Seems like a case of "no harm, no foul." I'm not spending any more time on that question unless it explodes.

sigh I want to know!
(and the m.ne q is legit, they really need to figure this out)

Correction: I'm not spending any more time on that question unless it explodes or receives an authoritative answer.

11:30 PM
Hehe
I still wish someone would answer it.

darn it, now i am curious

me too :P

i noticed

How long has that site been around?
I'm on mobile and don't feel like trying to figure it out.

^^ lazy.
(:

11:37 PM
@jadarnel27 about 8 months
IIRC it launched around the same time Space did
It got amazing commit stats.
514 in less than two months

Thanks, @Undo.
Laziness wins the day, @Rebecca!

@jadarnel27 But I might have been giving you false information to punish your laziness.

That's a risk I'm willing to take.

hehe

And now, it's time for kielbasa and cabbage. Nom nom nom.

11:43 PM
i am currently witing a research plan

And that's why my wife is a keeper: she put Bacon in the kielbasa and cabbage.
My phone's autocorrect capitalized "Bacon" - awesome.
3

definitely a keeper

rofl

11:55 PM
I don't even know what kielbasa is, but I don't like cabbage, or even bacon for that matter.

@animuson You are not fit to be a moderator if you do not like bacon!

Wait what? They gives you only twelve twist-ties for a roll of 24 trash bags? What do I do with the other 12 bags?

@animuson You tie them closed. Like with your hands
Or you could buy another box to get the 12 ties in it for your leftover twelve bags

These trash bags are sealed on both sides! How am I supposed to use these?
Serves me right for buying Wal-mart brand merchandise, I guess.

rofl
@animuson You're saving money because you get to slit them open yourself.
