@JohannesKuhn The first answer was a rant that I just got chance to flag and downvote. The others where already closed, I guess because Oded was watching that question and answering it at the same time. I assume he was still on high alert when that question for SO came along.
Not for free...you have to show some effort, have tried yourself and tell us what did and what didn't work. And maybe as a reward you can collect one hat.

On stack overflow some users abuse their (dubiously) attained reputation to "attack" people they hold a grudge against.
One can easily see that you reply to someone and that person immediately goes on rampage, looking up previous post and down voting them.

A diamond is never just a status symbol. It carries certain responsibilities with it (not to mention access to private information), so we don't hand them out just for the hell of it.

Maybe. I kind of like that idea (there a feature-req for it somewhere on MSO), but there's historically been a bunch of resistance to adding Yet Another Symbol.
I get the resistance behind Yet Another Symbol (I've participated in it on the heck no side), but I would think that those on an M.SE site would get the meaning of a greyed out diamond (we already do that on the network flair, and A51, methinks)

Fun fact: The German word for "hat" is "Hut". When I was younger and didn't know English, I always thought "Pizza Hut" (which exists by its English name in Germany) has something to do with hats. And their logo didn't actually make it obvious that this was an absurd idea
There should be an edit war-stopper hat. After two users A and B made X back-and-forth edits, user C made an edit, and both A and B stopped, without being suspended or the post being locked. C should get a hat. (I wonder if that ever happened?)
@JohannesKuhn There are thirteen sites where hats are turned off by default, but you can opt in. Math Overflow has no hats at all. The rest of them have hats turned on by default (including codegolf.se)
