@Oded Alack and alas, despite applying for the English/Japanese Community Manager position, apparently knowledge of meta memes wasn't enough to get me the position (despite my stellar Japanese and charming personality)

1:29 AM
@Oded: clicking the SE logo in the new supercollider bar on meta adds an ugly # to the address bar

1
A: The new top bar is out on meta. Consider it a beta

Travis JClicking on one of the new popup buttons appends a # to the url of the page. By design? Seems like it could be a side affect.

ah, should have expected that ;x +1

That # also makes the page scroll back to the top if it's not already so - making my floating-topbar hack look rather fragile.

that's normal behavior when clicking a hash link that's not preventDefaulted (defaultPrevented? meh, sounds stupid, too) ;)

@ThiefMaster Lol are you as disappointed as I am with the result of that flag?

1:34 AM
yeah, i'd have expected bright-red ;)

Well, at least a floating topbar only requires a few lines of extra CSS now. Here's a code comment from a pre-black-bar attempt:
/* And now for the background. Do you have any idea how hard this was?
 * I found out when testing on StackApps. When I set the existing one to
 * 'background-attachment: fixed' it disappeared halfway down the page for no
 * reason at all. When I rigged up a fresh <div> it didn't handle scrolling
 * down at all. (Turns out backgrounds z-index below just about everything.)
 * So we will just use an <img> and hope that the background image in question
 * is still 1px wide so it isn't adversely affected by being stretched to

The flag indicator doesn't even have a hover effect behind it. Where's the flag-handling love?

I'm contemplating whether I should post this as a question on meta... I have a feeling I am missing something obvious.. If you look a one of my suggested edits, and look at my stats, it will say: "JoshC had 4 edit suggestions approved, and 1 edit suggestions rejected" .. but I haven't had any edits rejected.. if you look at my suggested edit activity
it shows I have only suggested 4 edits.

@JoshC Could have been on a post that is now deleted.

That's originally what I thought.. but I am positive I haven't had anything rejected.
Is it possible that the action, edit caused it to log as rejected?

1:46 AM
No, the final status of that is Approved.

@gparyani Definitely didn't mean to offend you with the answer -- attracting eyes generally helps a question. And a good way to attract eyes on meta is to be witty in meta-style. I wasn't seriously proposing using Comic Sans, I just wanted to propose a ridiculous solution to the problem.

I stand corrected - thanks!

jealous of Shog's super-cool tools to find things I'm not capable of finding

@animuson Seconded. It makes me wish I could become an employee, just to get access to the data.

1:49 AM

I think my dream job would be doing free-association analysis of a huge data set and just finding stuff and digging deeper. I think that to do that, I need to learn the tools to actually handle big data though (Japanese companies rely on Excel which cannot even be auto-filtered due to using it as a table rather than as a spreadsheet -- databases are verboten)

@Shog9 What's with the title on that page? It's just "- Stack Exchange Data Explorer" - Where's the beginning of the title??

@animuson Meta's title is just <title>Meta Stack Overflow</title> so the issue may not be missing text, but rather an extra -

@jmac Other queries have their titles before the -.

Pretty sure it's because the query didn't have a title.

1:54 AM
Let's just blame @TimStone and move on.

@michaelb958 Touché.

@animuson Well the query is titleless, so...
@animuson I also wrote a bug report but it was....closed as a duplicate D:

The header creates a title from the query, so why not take a part of the query for the page title too? The dash at the beginning looks silly. :P

It's a feature to make you want to give your queries titles to prevent that from happening.

@animuson Can we add a hashtag to issues like this twitter style? What is the meta version of #firstworldproblems?

1:57 AM
What about queries other people write? I can't force them to write titles. Unfortunately.
@jmac Trending now: #ItWasTimStone
5

@animuson I like it. Can we promote international reporters to attach that to all tweets about bad news around the world? "A Chinese man was attacked at a local zoo by a panda while trying to feed it a grilled cheese sandwich #ItWasTimStone"

2:51 AM
@animuson Sure you can, just threaten to ban them on Stack Overflow.

3:36 AM
I have a question about Eclipse.
Is there a way to make Eclipse stop making me hate it?

Chris is at it again, a string of too minor edits changing a tag: stackoverflow.com/users/199048/chris
@Bart sent him a comment earlier, seems to have had no effect.
...if I recall correctly. Yesterday he got 110 rep from these edits alone.
I wasted all my reviews trying to get his edits rejected.

Say what @Qantas94Heavy. Someone dared to disobey the Word of Bart? I shall smite him with ...... my ... ehm ... smiting....stick.
3

gives Bart a smiting stick to play with

Looks more like a twig, that one.

Eyes up @Duncan. I'm holding it in my hands.

:)

8:49 AM
What is the official policy for such tags?
A tag with the name of a (once) popular (or unpopular) product, used in some other context now. Keep the tags clean?

2 hours later…
11:08 AM
That would be my personal preference.
I guess it would depend upon the number of older questions tagged, legitimately, using the old meaning of the tag.

@jmac sorry to hear that :(

11:35 AM
Are questions on Apple's export compliance on-topic for SO? I would guess not...
0
Q: RNCryptor and Export Compliance (e.g. in App Store)?

AlexRI am thinking about using RNCryptor to encrypt and decrypt entries in a SQLite database which is stored on an iOS device. From the RNCryptor documentation: Reliance on CommonCryptor functionality RNCryptor has very little "security" code. It relies as much as possible on the OS-provid...

It isn't a programming issue. It is a legal one, so off-topic, @Duncan

As I suspected, thanks @Oded.

11:57 AM
I wonder if Jon Skeet's wife secretly hates Stack Overflow.

Plot twist: Stack Overflow is Jon's wife.

Dun dun dunnnnn
And he's got it pregnant again. Here comes another beta-site...
2
Any thoughts on stackoverflow.com/posts/20000426/revisions, revision 2? I was going to reject it as too minor but ran out of time. In my eyes, the code should have been tidied as well... but then again the corrected tag is quite important. Thoughts?

Probably would have accepted and improved. There are a couple of minor things there, but meh..

1 hour later…
1:15 PM
ahh, the good old "suggest tag edits for questions tagged ".
Easy rep.
Like answering questions.

1:33 PM
I should really make this available to me as an auto-comment whenever there is a feature change on any of the sites
CHANGE HAPPENED. CHANGE BAD. HULK SMASH — Bart Jun 21 at 21:36
People just love to complain

2:08 PM
It looks like the programming-question-askers are having a party on mSO.

I just had over 300 rep change in the top bar. A answer of mine got migrated to another site and I lost that rep here, got that rep on the other site and gained a little rep elsewehere I think. But it looks like it was all was summed up. Does the new rep change icon show negative rep changes too?
Or does it just show all rep changes in green

@Undo Yay, cheap Meta flag weight!

@michaelb958 - flag weight? What's that?

The weight I put on while I'm on one of my cookie-eating-crap-flagging sessions.

@Oded Um, er, I mean helpful flags. Of course. (For me, 'flag weight' just rolls off the {tongue|keyboard} more easily.)

2:21 PM
:)

2:41 PM
Would downvoting you do the trick?

Haha, it probably would, yes. Thank you to whoever that was.
So, it seems it sums today's reputation changes, but not yesterdays.

2:59 PM
Ooh, ooh, I'll downvote someone.

yay \o/
downvotes are fun because they are personal

Haha, well said.

It's like stabbing someone instead of just shooting them.

At least the double !! makes him sound extra thankful.

3:06 PM
That's true.
When people put 2 periods at the end of a sentence, it looks like a mistake; and if they put more than three, they look like a jerk. I think this applies to exclamation points as well.

That's just your opinion....

Jerk.
=)

!!!

A user once complained about my edit removing about a dozen exclamation points. I had somehow made his question seem "less serious".
8

That is awesome.

3:16 PM
I still have some lovely emails like that. One that complained I must have no life making a certain edit. Given the effort taken to mail me, I had a pretty reasonable idea about the user's life or lack thereof.

I'd have say this is a first:

Q: List of companies in The Netherlands contains German company

phwI've searched for a list of companies in The Netherlands which also includes Omikron Data Quality GmbH, despite that one being from Germany. None of their listed cities is even close to The Netherlands.

Oh. It's a careers bug :P
/me hides

lol
@Undo - think you can hide from me?
2

Whatever you do ... don't mention the war

@Oded Sorry D:

No harm done - I've done similar ;)

3:29 PM
Okay, whew.

3:46 PM
Did the new top bar inbox thingy just change to an envelope?

Envelope? It's still an inbox for me ...

It is an inbox if you don't have any notifications, an envelope if you do :)

Bart does not know this, because he is unpopular, and his inbox is empty.

I shall name myself Unpops.
On the Careers side of things, is there any link between their tags and the SO tags? Is there a tag-wiki deal for companies? It annoys me when they use the "wrong" tags.

Not TheAntiPops?

4:00 PM
And here I thought I was simply not all that popular. Not that I was the anti-Christ to Pops' Christ-like status.
Geez, if it continues like this, I will go and find my social warmth in the C++ Lounge.

Now I wonder what comment I'm not seeing

Okay, after reading everything, and not fully understanding the title edit, I have decided that I will create a website which will cater for all enthusiasts in regard to physics and will display questions and answers on an "as is basis". How dare you edit my question. It was meant to focus on redshift as being visible right here on earth, rather than just the over embellishments of misunderstood astrophysics which all of you seem to prattle off out of some textbook. Sheesh. You all don't provide answers, only chaos... — Dorian Lyder Sep 17 '12 at 4:57
Let's just say I deleted the comment thread without realizing I did.
HOW DARE YOU EDIT MY QUESTION IMA CREATE A NEW WEBSITE HURRDURRR

Censorship!

I thought physicists admired chaos.

4:14 PM
Yes, we do. Especially when the Lyapunov exponents are really really large.
That's the best kind of chaos.

The greatest and most depressing thing about all these sites is the realization of how much stuff is out there that I don't even begin to have a clue about.

@Bart Very true.
And that applies to sites where I participate, too.

Oh yes. I see stuff on SO that might as well be written in a different language.

@Bart ...because it is?

Don't really know @Manishearth. I just blindly vote to close and move on.

4:20 PM
hah

Hahaha
THINK LESS. VOTE CLOSE. VOTE BART!
That should be your slogan if you run for moderator.

BART SMASH!

Let me put it like this.... this close vote queue would no longer be a problem.
Btw, all this chat stuff is private, right? Don't want this to come back at me during an election.

@Bart Yes, it's private. The usual disclaimer applies, please don't migrate anything out of this room or quote messages without the permission of the author.
I bet it would be easy to write a script that clears all close votes, and review-unbans yourself whenever you hit an audit. Then again, audits are easy to detect programmatically.
It's fun review-banning yourself

That question I linked to earlier is borderline reopenable now, despite being cross-posted. What do you all think?
Oh
It got reopened via the reopen review queue.

4:30 PM
It's an exact dupe

It should still be closed because it duplicates another site's post.

Either close it on GIS, or do so on SO.

Not necessarily.

Why not @jadarnel27?

Actually, to be fair....

Q: The ability to link cross site duplicates

Justin DearingJeff seems in favor of cross-site duplicates. Some questions might be asked on three different sites, each site needing three different answers. For example, a question about a text editor. So perhaps their should be a way to link the questions on the three different sites. Adding a link manuall...

Seems like cross posting is not hated, provided it's on-topic in both locations.

4:32 PM
@Bart I was just thinking that cross-posting is not, in itself, a reason for closing. If it's on topic on both sites.
Haha, I knew I had read that somewhere!

Problem is that the sites don't really support it though.
The question might well be answered on one site, but not on the other, with the OP abandoning it.

Normally it would be nice if you kind of reworded it a bit, to make it cater to the community of each site.
@Bart I guess that's sort of a problem, yeah.

The uber-post seems to be this one:
29
Q: What to do with cross-site duplicates?

lc.What's the right course of action for cross-site duplicates? There are two flavors: A question is posted which belongs on another site and ends up already having been asked there. I can't find an example right now, but it's bound to happen soon if it hasn't already. The same question is posted...

But ...but ....

I added the link to GIS in the comments, for future reference (in case it gets answered there and not on SO).

For the SE overlords/devs, the icons and thingys on the right are dissapearing in the new top bar.
^^ bug bug bug bug bug bug

@Undo You mean left?

@TimPost Ooops - yep :P

@Undo What browser? (did you add this to the top bar thread currently at the top of meta?)
We know it borks horribly in IE8

@TimPost Only in Chrome...
But it actually might be my fault. Let me check some things.
Nope, wasn't my user script.
It seems like the entire left side just disappears when it looks for new inbox messages - it's there for a fraction of a second, then goes away.
Works fine in Safari.
@TimPost But doesn't everything? :P
Note that I can still click on where the elements used to be, I just can't see them.

6:30 PM
Every time I type "Oded" with my phone, it suggests "Coded" as a correction. That's oddly appropriate haha.

lol

Also, the new theme is honestly not nearly as borked as I would have expected in IE8.

Should have been brown though, really.

6:46 PM
Strongly agree.

6:57 PM
There. Now the opinion of the people has been voiced.

Haha, my eyes kind of popped open when I viewed this question.

-2
A: The new top bar is out on meta. Consider it a beta

jadarnel27I think we can all agree that the top bar should brown, not black. Brown is a superior color in every way - to black, as well as all other colors. To change the top bar to anything that is not brown is tantamount to insulting this entire community. Please correct this grave error. Brown

@animuson Haha, that is definitely a bit startling when you're not expecting...uh...medical diagrams.

There, have an upvote. :D

Yessss!

7:16 PM
I feel for the moderator who will have to decline the NAA flags on that one. :)

Clearly because the moderators want to delete it, they're just afraid of the wrath of brown.

"declined - a moderator found brown"

@jadarnel27 Needs a nice brown picture, I think.

Perhaps.

Some nice contenders out there: google.co.uk/search?q=brown&tbm=isch

7:26 PM
This has all caused me to notice that the SE app will only show you the first page of answers.

Watching some F1 practice session, seeing a French sponsor on the Lotus cars .... guess what their name is...

Marron?

Brun

That looks German.

That would be braun

7:35 PM
If they wanted braun, they should have won the war.
I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it.

All of a sudden I would love to have a prawn Göring, SALAD, a prawn salad.

just bought more Justin Bieber music

7:53 PM
Anyone feels like flagging this as offensive? I'll validate your flag because JB is offensive! :P

That Stack Overflow ad where the dude has a unicorn head is super creepy.

8:08 PM
I've been accused of trolling :o
Release the kraken!

Clearly you're browning, not trolling.

Haha, did he actually delete his comment? Brilliant. I shall put my smiting stick away.

That's a good idea, Bart. Don't let the power get to your head.
Who is it that's starring everything in here lately?

8:30 PM
Star all the things!!!
2

There is a daily star limit. You can only star some of the things.
You can only star all of the things that you can star.
Such is life (pardon my French).

Can you star things on the mobile site?

Only if it already has a star on it. The mobile UI is lacking a real star feature.

9:24 PM
Any SO mods here?
I doth have an inquiry about flagging practises.

Inquire away. A mod will surely be by in the near future. animuson is here pretty much all the time.

Ok, then:

Or maybe Bart can answer your question in the mean time. He knows many things.

I have 70-some-odd flags on SO, and I have a fairly efficient way to find obsolete comments. Obsolete comments tend to come in groups. So, mods: Would you prefer all the obsolete comments below a post flagged, or one custom flag addressing all the comments?

For what it's worth, I've had success with just custom-flagging the post under which the pile of unwanted comments reside.

9:32 PM
@jadarnel27 I'm more concerned about the mods' workflow - when you have 500 flags to go through, every second counts.

@Undo Depends, if it's a long thread of comments with some obsolete ones, then flag them individually. If the comment thread is better off being purged completely, flag the post and indicate you want the whole thread purged.

@animuson What about if there are two comments total, both obsolete?

Eh, it doesn't really matter either way.

Ok. Expect some comment flags in the near future, once I get the comments in my db.

But use a custom flag. "Too chatty" doesn't really work.

9:35 PM
@JohannesKuhn There's an 'obsolete' comment flag.
Holy cow, SO has a ton of comments.
twenty-four million
fifty-thousand should be enough to start, no?
Ok, here come the flags.

9:56 PM
@balpha should this really ping you?
it's likely to be code after all :p

@thief

@Manishearth Hey there! I'm cleaning up SO now!

Me too, already ran out

@manish

yeah that pinged me, too..

9:57 PM
@Manishearth Using my database technique?

nah. Simple SQL, then just opening random questions

Oh. That works too.
So far the SO mods haven't tried to run me down and beat me with something, so I must not be bugging them too much.

Well there are currently 767 flags in the queue.

Let's make it hit 1k!
I already pushed in 40 today

Woohoo! I can contribute around 140.

10:02 PM
It did a couple days ago...

Probably could add some close flags, but sleep

Well we don't see close flags so those don't bother us. ;P

@animuson Is that overall, or just post flags?

posts and comments

@animuson custom!

10:03 PM
~100 comment flags

@ThiefMaster Wow.

I can do custom flags for comment cleanup like Undo's been doing on Physics.
@Undo half are mine sheepish grin

@Manishearth "user needs stabbed with @Bart's smiting stick (auto)"

And Space. And Astro. And GD.

To be honest, most comment flags don't really need mod intervention

10:04 PM
@ThiefMaster Well, the obsolete ones need deleted.
Right?

yes, should be
i was talking about a bunch of "not constructive" ones ;)

Oh, yeah.

@ThiefMaster But they never reach the 3-flag threshhold

Most comment flags are "I can't believe this user suggested something that makes me look like an idiot"

Unless of course we create a centralized system for comment flagging. Every comment I flag gets submitted there, and others can counterflag.

10:05 PM
Lol.
I wouldn't mind being able to review comment flags, make it a 20k priv or something.
An addon to the 10k tools.

you wouldn't want the current ui we have to deal with comment flags - it's pretty horrible

flags more comments
I think this 5-second rate limit might kill me.

@Undo Only @TimStone knows the true frustrations of rate limiting.

:D
sooo much orange on my flag page right now :)

10:20 PM
Ha, the batteries in my mouse died while I was handling flags. xP

@animuson It died right over a delete link, right? And it defaults to send a click signal every 3 seconds, right? Drat.
... And I'm out of comment flags.
Wow, the mods are already almost caught up to the 80 I flagged today.
Having fun?
For future me: I stopped at #1647230.

10:37 PM
Well I took a couple weeks off from moderating (for the most part) so I've spent the last hour plowing through flags. xP

10:54 PM
