@TimStone Should only be 20 seconds for you, but apparently the error message isn't adjusted for mods/trusted users - so it'll say 60 when you hit it in 20.

OMG there are so many bad suggested edits coming in right now. o.o

Can someone please attempt to answer my question: Improving Question-Asking - Looking for Suggestions It has been really bugging me :)

My question needs to be migrated somewhere else, but not sure where. Maybe Programmers? stackoverflow.com/q/15285313/545328

@65Fbef05 It looked like it needs to be on programmers. I tried to flag it, but Programmers wasn't in the list. Should I comment?

Anyone with 10k repz on SO that wants to cast some of their delete votes, check this page out.
Right now, it's a bunch of closed posts ("too localized" questions where the problem was just a typo) that could stand to be deleted.

@jadarnel27 lol get out of my head

Needs more brown?

Mmmhmm.
@mootinator Watchu laughin' at?
Chump.

I was just fiddling around wondering why they had to get rid of the most useful feature they added to Windows recently in Win 8.
That being the search box in the start menu.
It usually knew what I wanted.

Oh haha. Serendipity.

5:21 AM
Now there's a stupid Bing search that finds useless crap on the internet and takes 3 clicks to get to :/
Okay, maybe I misclicked the first time.
It still sucks though.
I get distracted between click one and two.

A: What does (char* ) do in C?

sahil vigIt is used to cast variable into pointer of char type. for eg - char p = 'a'; char* a = (char *) p; In the above example the 'a' will have address of the variable 'p'.

wtf, 5 upvotes for this completely incorrect crap

@MadaraUchiha it's 200, like I linked to above. The 198 is [status-caching].

Q: Some Virgin Media users having issues accessing Stackoverflow.com

Mark WilkinHi I'm the community manager for Virgin Media's Help & Support forum, we've had a bunch of reports of our users having issues accessing Stackoverflow.com. The problem appears to be outside our network so we'd like to speak to one of your network people to try and see what's going wrong here. ...

Heh.

Hmm. This user is copy pasting the exact same answer into multiple questions.

2:42 PM
According to this questionable code I wrote, that "closing room" SO chatroom I linked to has led to the deletion of over 700 questions in the last week.

More food for blogs complaining about the evil mordrettors on Stack Overflow. Well done.

I feel less panicked now. Thanks, @DanielFischer.

Always happy to help.

2:48 PM
In defense of that deletion fest, it's all questions where the problem was just a typo in the OPs code. So there's not really much usefulness for future visitors.

As if that mattered when people want to complain.

3:44 PM
Can we dupe close this so folks are directed to the authoritative portion?

Q: Can't access any Stack Exchange site

BrendonFor about a week now, I have been unable to access any Stack Exchange sites from my home network. Whenever I try, the browser tries to load for a while, then says it cannot connect. The only way I have been able to access the sites is via a proxy. All packets are lost when I ping the server: &g...

@jcolebrand It's not really a duplicate per se

It sorta is.

Technically speaking the other post is merely asking for SE's email address

"Hi, I'm a client of VM and can't access the site", and "Hi, we're VM tech support, our users can't access your site"
But that's where the technical resolution is most likely to be made public, no?

re-open request! can anyone help me here?
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15299058/essential-meteor-development-skill-sets

I loathe "give me a list of stuff I should learn" questions. And you probably shouldn't edit "please reopen this" into the question itself

@MichaelMrozek did you read it more carefully? Someone else did, and reverted their downvote. Generally "what should I learn next" is too open-ended. But I'm qualifying it here very specifically: what other skills are considered requirement to working with Meteor. For example, if you want to make a web page and you're studying HTML and CSS but unaware of Javascript, Javascript would be something you should know about. Did I basically cover it all? I don't know what I don't know.
@MichaelMrozek I think you are mistaken. There is a right answer here. It's not an open-ended discussion type questions.

I read it; I don't know how "what are skills are considered requirements" is better than "what should I learn next", they're the same question worded differently. There absolutely isn't a right answer, there is no actual objective list of required knowledge to use Meteor

@MichaelMrozek yes there is. I know some of them at least. Javascript, Mongodb and JSON are on that list. What else is important? Something for UI development or data validation? I'm want to prepare myself so I don't have to google for hours everyday trying to work past all the challenges I will face.
People here are so insensitive. How does it benefit anyone to downvote this question? It only harms someone (me) who is trying to learn and understand. Rather discourteous lot.

5:50 PM
There are about 20000 meta posts exploring the reasons questions get downvoted/closed/deleted; in short it's because leaving bad questions on the site encourages people to ask more bad questions

Here's the difference: "what sport should I learn next" is open ended. "What skills aer required to scuba dive" isn't. (learn how to swim, learn about the physics and physiology of respiration under pressure and time-tables, etc.)
It got downvoted because people carelessly pigeon-holed it as something it was not. I hope some intelligent people here will upvote it. Cheers!

@Max: step back a minute... What prompted you to ask this question?

But trying to construct a list of all knowledge required to scuba dive seems ridiculous to me; it's so much less useful than a particular question about a specific problem you ran into while trying to scuba dive
It's like asking "what errors could I run into while compiling?" instead of "what is causing this error I just got?"

6:06 PM
@MichaelMrozek Its just that I'm trying to avoid having to google every then minutes for an answer. So I want to study the required skills first. I don't have a long history as a web developer, so all the things which are commonsense to some of you people is not so obvious to me. I think the scuba analogy is valid. Is it better that I go diving and then ask for help after I've blown my ear drums before I didn't know how to equalize?
Hi :1306688 What prompted me is that I prototyped a UI for an application I want to build in Meteor but I'm not sure how to move forward. Should I hand-code it in handlebars.js HTML template system? Should I know about some javascript UI library? What about validation? What are most people doing? I need more background knowledge to even know how to proceed.
I have read the Meteor docs. Entirely! But they don't discuss a lot about UI design and validation. Some people use backbone for these things, but as a full-stack framework Meteor makes that unnecessary.

@MaxHodges Ok, so right there you already have a more specific question
What's your end-goal?

Does rolling back an edit that caused the question to bump to the Reopen queue cause it to get kicked out?

@animuson probably not
easy enough to check

my end goal is that I'd like to port our WordPress site to Meteor/Mongodb so I can extend it with a lot of additional development features which are way beyond WordPress capabilities. Basically the company is moving from a CMS to a full-fledged custom social commerce site. It's a big project. I will outsource much of it, but want to learn as much as I can to contribute and to maintain after release.

@Shog9 I was just curious because of this review item.

6:16 PM
and don't want to waste my time learning something like backbone.js if it's not really necessary anymore

@animuson Well, ok, so can't really use that as a test

The system is smart enough to change the Revision tab to "No changes to display" so was wondering if it ended review too.

@animuson Review ended before it was rolled back 'cause it got 3 "leave closed" responses

Yeah, I know. I'm just saying that review is what made me think of it.

ok well trying to get help on stackoverflow has turned out to be extremely unproductive. Is there another stack web property where people would be more helpful in providing guidance? Or should I just pay some Meteor hotshot on odesk $100 to give me an hour lecture?

6:21 PM
Anyone wanna reject some orphaned edits? stackoverflow.com/tags/php-4.2/info

@MaxHodges So, yeah, listen - you've already asked a better question here than you did on-site IMHO.
It's really important not to get too far ahead of yourself.

This place makes no practical sense. The reopen guidelines told me to reedit to try to get it re-opened. Then someone comes along and REVERTS my edits to ensure it will not be reopened. Your people can be real cunts.

@MaxHodges language, Max. I don't see any reverted edits?

I don't see rollbacks either

ok maybe it was a unrefreshed browser tab. my apologies.
i'll find help somewhere else. OK to delete if you like. Cheers.

6:29 PM
@MaxHodges Try something like this:
> ##How should I architect my Meteor application's UI?
> I'm moving from desktop development to web dev, and starting by converting our WordPress site to Meteor/Mongodb so that I can add development features beyond WordPress's capabilities.
> I've prototyped the UI in Meteor, but I'm unsure which direction to take next... Should I hand-code the logic in handlebars.js's HTML template system? Should I look for a custom JavaScript UI library? I've read the Meteor docs in their entirety, but they don't really discuss things like UI design or validation; I guess what I'm looking for is guidance on how a Meteor application should be constructed before I head too far in the wrong direction.
You can (and should) flesh that out a bit more, but the goal should be to describe the specific problem you're facing, and let folks who do know something about what they're doing respond with advice on what you need.
The way your question is structured right now, you could easily end up with a list of libraries that won't do you any good at all - from well-meaning folks who simply have no idea what you're trying to do.
I'm sorry the guidance you received in comments wasn't particularly great, but I believe this is what folks were driving at: you're asking for an ocean and hoping you'll be able to filter it down to what you need, when you could just ask "what do I need for the task I've set out for myself?"

7:03 PM
@Shog9 Thank you for putting so much thought and energy into that response. I appreciate it!

Q: Remote Filtering with ListFilter in ExtJS Grid Column Header

My bounty on this question is ending. But I didn't get any solution. Now the up-votes will give the answerer 50% of the bounty. But this answer does not solve it.
any way to prevent it?

I didn't downvoate it.
So I can make it +2

Q: Explicit "do not award bounty" button

Jan SchejbalShouldn't there be a way to prevent automatic awarding of a bounty? If noone else answers, half the bounty will automatically go to this pers...

You can always support that, but there's no way to explicitly prevent it right now.

Stack Overflow works terribly surprisingly well in IE8.
> Object doesn't support this property or method.

@JaneDoe Should be up next week

9:26 PM
@DanielFischer Not only that - people might be tempted to not vote for one of their favorites because they think he'll be a shoo-in and the other three favorites need the votes more. AKA the Brad Larson Effect.

@mmyers Right. I've done my share that it not be renamed the Andrew Barber effect. But after my first two there were still two candidates I wanted to vote for :(

Wow, My Coke Rewards couldn't make these coupons any harder to use...

There's an election going on? Where are my 9,000 notifications?

You got them last time, they're still valid.

Quick, someone tell me who to vote for.

Clearly people wearing Stack overflow t-shirts should be at the top of the picking list. :P

I already cast my #1 vote for Neal (groan...), so I really just need 2 and 3.

i just voted for people that didn't have answers in the PHP tag

LOL

we shouldn't put php people in charge, that would be lunacy you know

@Shog9 Can you edit a link to the digest into the election page? (feel free to delegate as necessary)

I'm afraid to touch it. The only non-employees who have edited the election page died horrible deaths

@mmyers I do believe the proper retort is "Objection your honor, the prosecutor has already voted"?

11:05 PM
Is there a way to find how many people have voted yet? I'd be somewhat curious.

in 2013 Stack Overflow Moderator Election on Stack Overflow Chat, 1 hour ago, by animuson
Just go to the Constituent badge page, find what page there is a massive gap between awards, then (#-pages * 60 - overflow)
Involves some counting.

@DanielFischer Or you can bribe @mmyers, if lightning hasn't struck him yet. He won't tell you though, somehow's he's immune to the inherent corruption and cronyism that comes with being a moderator.

@TimStone That's what we want you to believe.
So 1200 minus change so far. Thanks, @animuson.
