The WMF has somehow managed to be more idiotic than Stack Exchange...remind me to never edit there again...see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
01:33
looking at the bbc article...
I really don't see what other options wikimedia has
02:22
@JourneymanGeek Refuse to disclose users personal information sounds like an option (and the only sensible one)
@Starship with a court order?
Depends, on if you like dying on hills
So couple of things - SE has in better trustier days released information on users with a court order - the silkroad case used that
Its a court order so wikimedia is legally obliged to, or gets blocked. India also <citation needed>, if I recall correctly, insists on having a legal representative for internet services above a certain size, essentially so there's someone liable for legal issues like this
Short of cutting off access to a whole country, and showing contempt for the courts, there's not much wikimedia can do
02:40
@JourneymanGeek The silkroad case, as far as I know, was a legimitamate investigation of a drug dealer, not a corrupt undemocratic attack on random innocent users for posting something neutral...
@JourneymanGeek WMF has lost access to whole countries (and they always tend to allow them back though, with a few exceptions), but they haven't lost access to their core principles. I'd say the second is better.
@Starship I donno, saying a news organisation is a government mouthpiece may not be neutral
and you're saying somehow the american legal system is 'more trustworthy' than the indian one with no proof
@JourneymanGeek There isn't much proof I could possibly give (other than its generally considered to be that way, and there much more corruption and government control in India)
<citation needed>
@JourneymanGeek Calling something what it is when supported by reliable sources is neutral...in the same way that calling ISIS attacks terror attacks is neutral...
@Starship - but is it? Also wikipedia's defence isn't that its the truth, but rather they have no control over whats on there
03:30
@JourneymanGeek Because everyone believes in a different truth...also it wouldn't be reasonable for SO to have been sued for the silk road thing either
04:19
Almost 400 signatures signed by established editors and multiple admins. Perhaps it's time for WMF to make a statement on the situation. Ratnahastin (talk) 02:48, 9 November 2024 (UTC) Somebody tag WMFOffice please Djano Chained (talk) 14:10, 9 November 2024 (UTC) 400+ now. At the present rate of growth, I estimate we'll have 500+ signatures in a little more than ten hours, but it'll probably slow a bit, so make it twelve or so. In the last ten hours, we've had an average of 5 new sigs/hr. In the first ten hours after the signature opened, that was closer to 18. Cremastra (u — c) 15:12, 9 November...
> The Foundation refused to [disclose the info], and appealed the order. That appeal came to a close without requiring that data be disclosed to ANI
04:56
In August 2012 I got into dev.stackoveflow (whose database was forked from a slightly stale copy of prod) and retagged every question I’d answered with the “hacker” tag, intending for the system to grant me a “hacker” tag badge, as the closest I could get to the real thing. Sadly, that badge task wasn’t running on dev.so, so I just looked like a goofball. Jeff alluded to it vaguely on the podcast. — Jeremy 4 mins ago

Ugh. I hate caching.
07:50
@PetəíŕdtheWizard As an Australian I’ve always pronounced “cache” as /kay·sh/ whereas others dialects of English all seem to pronounce it as /ka·sh/ (like “cash”).
@ElementsInSpace for me it's just "kesh" (same as the pronounce of "cash"). Fun related trivia: the word "kash" in Hebrew (קש) means "straw" in English. :-D
@Jeremy :-D
08:30
gone already
I always wondered, is there a point giving "gone" feedback to Smokey? @Elements @cocomac what do you think?
I think all posts on meta smoke should get at least two reviewers, because reviewers can make mistakes.
@ElementsInSpace true, but not really related to the "gone". ;)
Also, it's not like SE review, Smokey report doesn't have "completed" state.
Perhaps in case of user with more than X rep it will be better to change the code to require at least two "fp" to add the user to blacklist.
08:49
@ShadowWizard Not sure what you mean. I wouldn't reply to the SD report with that (as it would add it to the MS record), but if someone posts a "still up"-type message, I think replying to that message is reasonable if I cast the final flag to remove the post assuming it isn't against a given chatroom's rules. IIRC there's some checking to display when a post is deleted in metasmoke but I don't recall the details.
09:02
@cocomac ah, I just mean what's the purpose of the "gone" related to SD itself, or the MS report. e.g. would it be visible anywhere on MS that I gave "gone" feedback?
I mean as actual feedback like the "k", not as comment.
But guess I can just read it in the docs again, let me see...
!!/help
@ShadowWizard I'm SmokeDetector, a bot that detects spam and offensive posts on the network and posts alerts to chat. A command list is available here.
ah oops.
> Deletes a message of SmokeDetector
For some reason I remembered it being as a way to signal that the post being reported is gone. Oh well. Thanks anyway @cocomac :)
@ShadowWizard Ohh, I see. I forgot about that alias. I'm not very familiar with deleting SD messages or how it detects post deletion (beyond that it can somehow), so if you're interested in more details, you may need to ask in CHQ.
@cocomac nah, I'm good. But you deserve a...

Forgot my umbrella at home, ya know.

In other news, I got the Alien Quadrilogy boxed set at the Op-shop today — unopened, and for less than the cost of a small coffee.
@ElementsInSpace huh? Looks like it costs $60. Coffee is really expensive in your place. ;-)
I paid $4.
@ElementsInSpace sounds odd... how you got such discount?
</envy> ;)
ordering things via @ElementsInSpace from now on :D
It was previously owned; I bought it from an op-shop (AKA a thrift store).
ah, missed that part. Nice!
eh, found it for $10 but shipping costs $70
O.o
10:41
I’ll lend you my copy when I’ve finished watching it. But you’ll have to send back when you’re done. And cover the shipping, both ways.
uphill, in the snow
@ElementsInSpace heh, first need to see if my DVD still working, didn't use it for.... oh my... 6-8 years. :D
@ShadowWizard rofl
But if it does, that's a good idea. Thanks in Advantage! :P

I've recently seen this:

Q: No Thanks, Damn It!

John Saunders For a while this year, I was on a crusade, editing posts to remove "Thanks". But there were far too many of those posts. So I started to remove "Thanks in advance". But there were too many of those. So I started to remove "Thanks in advanced", which in addition to being inappropriate for Stack...

For some reason 🐛 is called bug. 🪲 is called beetle.
ah found the real one.

Now try guessing what font my old Chrome uses.
11:11

good old VS
I even learned it a bit two years ago. ;)
Hey, not so old. 2019
Though I almost had to work with VS2005.
(week ago)
2019? 5 years ago already.
@ShadowWizard almost? ;)
@PetəíŕdtheWizard Compared to what we used to work with.... brand new. :P
12:06
@PetəíŕdtheWizard yeah, luckily it was spared as they found a way to connect with C# and not only C++.
Actually the C# module is using modules written in C++, at first it didn't connect properly.
Time to use array instead of separate variable for each connection.

Hold on to your hats, you're all going to the cloud now!
🌥️
15:46
You're in the cloud, btw. It wasn't very spectacular -- someone clicked a button and that was it 😅
Holy moly we're SOARING.
chat.SE next? Or is all of chat on the cloud now?
no just chat.meta -- we're about to send 20% of chat.se traffic to GCP
it was already the cloud as far as we were concerned. The cloud was always just somebody else's machine on the internet. 😂
(all websockets are still down on earth, btw -- we're doing those last)
@balpha websockets, you say? bring back Stack Egg™. Crush the cloud.
