Pretty sure they're considered cross-site, but I can't verify as the other time they spammed was on SU and they got their account destroyed there.

I'm sorry for submitting two suggested edits on the latest question; I did the tags and then submitted, saw some stuff in the text to edit, and did that - right as the first edit was approved ...
Rob
Rob
@Feeds you're a little late; we moved our own mountains, and resolved the spam issue with an edit and lengthy debate.
I would recall the second edit if I could, I don't want to look like I'm hunting for rep
Usually I get at least a minute to look at the text over again, but I know I'm not supposed to need it...
Eh, they were reviewed by the post author. Don't worry 'bout it.
6:43 AM
worrying
!!/worry about it
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard No such command 'worry'.
:(
@Glorfindel when you get your SO diamond so that you'll be blue on all three chat domains? ;)
So far only SE staff have such privilege. :P
Also, need to update your chat profile. :D
Rob
Rob
@rene @sha - made a bunch of edits there fixing grammer, "here" links; and making what was being asked clearer. (rolled back too). Reopening and an answer that there are 3 chat servers might be useful, then re-closeas a dupe to that question.
Incorporated Sha's edits, as they are correct.
BTW, wonder if that's a real working QR code?
(avatar of this user)
my QR scanner identified and failed to read it
6:51 AM
@hyper-neutrino hmm... failed in what way? Does it show some text?
wait hold up
maybe this QR code encodes the text "Failed to read QR code."
i might have been trolled
LOL
hahahaha
dies laughing
lmfao. well played, honestly. :P
6:52 AM
uh...hm. I think you're right.
Not my game, lol.. :D
the user's username encodes "Ahmed" in hex
huh, he should be more active on Puzzling.
Let me invite him here...
lmao
yeah i used a second scanner (idk why i have two QR scanner apps on my phone) and it gave the exact same message
but i realized the "Text" header doesn't make sense if there's actually a decoding error
Never really delved into how QR codes working.
Thought it can only be links.
well a QR code just encodes some block of text
a link is just one such application of encoding a block of text :P
6:55 AM
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard thanks, forgot about that. Now I miss the option to copy changes to all chat servers :)
So you can in theory encode any file as QR code, even PDF, as base64?
theoretically yes - i'm not sure how much information you can encode though
I ended up finding out more than I bargained for when I tried to answer a fairly basic question about QR codes once ... stackoverflow.com/a/25441459/874188

Q: QR CODE max char length

itsmeI've read that QRCODES has about 4,290 alphanumeric chars limit (about 4kb). Is it true and is there any way to increase their memory size? I would like to have more space on if possible: P

Not very much. :(
6:57 AM
@tripleee heh, very nice!
Rob
Rob
Should have included: For more info, click "here".
yeah, expected as much
thing is even with a bijective encoding QR codes can only store so much with the limited set of bits they can encode, and there's also error correcting so that cuts out even more
although, i don't know exactly how the encoding system works and whether there's compression that's done to allow longer strings to be QR-ified

@Rob I got the part about edits, fair enough, but didn't get what you mean by reopening?
And I didn't really edit, only retagged.
Rob
Rob
You can hammer open, answer (as suggested / asked in the comments), then re-close as a dupe to the Q&A that explains that there are 3 chat servers
it's probably better to ask a mod to edit the dupe target list
@Rob nah, that would be abuse of my privilege. If anything, can post another answer on the original if it fits. Didn't really look into it yet.
@hyper-neutrino I can also edit.
Rob
Rob
That wouldn't be helpful, and would be irrelevant / confusing.
oh, i thought that was a mod tool lol. oops
7:02 AM
Dupe hammer gives the power to both close/reopen with single vote, and edit the dupes list at will.
ah
so basically to let you not need to abuse your privilege :p
Rob
Rob
Jack of all trades.
Well, maybe one. 💨
we don't have a high amount of hammer wielders on codegolf and dupes are usually caught before posting and even when they are hammered/closed there isn't really dispute over what to target
Reading again, I'm not sure what @rene meant, to be honest. The answer is given in the duplicate target, and is correct, nothing for me to add. @Rob
7:05 AM
i think i've used the edit power only a couple of times and on site meta, not even main site :P

@Luuklag hmm? Didn't see it. :(
@Rob what has been going on?
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard somehting about balloons related to heat ;)
I wonder, has anyone here got an email from Andrew Seaman? (LinkedIn)
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard seaman, or semen?

A: QR code compression

CyanIf your question is: "Is it possible to store 20K characters in QR Code?", then the answer is yes, it is possible. If your question is: "Is it possible to guarantee you'll always be able to store 20K characters in QR Code to compression?", the answer is no. There is no way to guarantee that, due...

@Rob 0.18 for me. Feeling so good my phone is faster than @JourneymanGeek's by whole 0.01 kb per second! :-P
10:01 AM
lol
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard on the other hand, my battery is full so I don't make people anxious
@JourneymanGeek lol that's good!
10:17 AM
Apparently this will go from 0-full in 30 minutes on its special charger tho
and I carry a fully charged USB PD power bank (which should top this off, 3-4 times?)
10:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek power bank.... is there interest rate? ;)
11:19 AM
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard It probably is negative then
And you will be charged for it
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard y so slow? Im doing 41 Mbps on 4G
@Luuklag I'm not doing much :D
@JourneymanGeek Ah thought, that was your top speed for a sec ;)
11:34 AM
Hmm I can't seem to share mine
Smokey, you be messing up on me
@Luuklag shitty WiFi at work
If it's working it's slow, and tons of disconnecting.
@Luuklag I think it needs to be in double quotes "spam seed"
They say the infrastructure of the building is bad.
@rene yup
I ... don't think I'll go inside a building when its infrastructure is bad. Isn't that needed to keep it from falling apart ....
11:53 AM
Well the building wasn't built for Hi-Tech companies, it's for light industry.
That's my company major branch, or at least was.
But we're still stuck in same building. :/
I just turn off WiFi when I want to use the phone for anything, lol. :D
@rene yeah that true

@JourneymanGeek Singtel is a SpeedTest winner: speedtest.net/awards/singapore/2017/…
> "Singtel is Singapore's Speedtest Awards Winner for mobile network speed during Q1-Q2 2017. To win this award, Singtel achieved a Speed Score of 47.49, with average download speeds of 52.06 Mbps and average upload speeds of 19.38 Mbps.".
@Rob I'm not on singtel :D
I'm just using their test server
I'm on circles and My Republic, both of which are MVNOs on M1's network
Rob
Rob
Well, at least you know that the other end is quick. I used to use the same default server and be satisfied with the result,then I changed to a different one far away; almost twice as quick. Some places and routes were just slow - it's evened out a fair bit the past few years.
My local shopping mall has Wi-Fi almost 2x Singtel speeds. The phone's chipsets play a big part, I have LTE CAT18 (1200/211 Mbps).
Wifi and cellular networks are ... not the same :D
ANyway, I posted that to show I had a speed faster than 18kbps :D
Rob
Rob
1:01 PM
True, WiFi is bound to be slower.
Modern cellular chipsets are at 2000-7500 Mbits/s - if you can grab the towers:
The Qualcomm Snapdragon modems are a series of 4G LTE, LTE Advanced, LTE Advanced Pro, and 5G NR modems found in many phones, tablets, laptops, watches and even cars. == Qualcomm Gobi == The Qualcomm Gobi series was their modem branding before they switched to the X-series. == Qualcomm 4G X-series == The Qualcomm Snapdragon X-series modems are the current line-up of 4G LTE modems. === Snapdragon X5 LTE Modem === LTE Technology: LTE FDD, Cellular Technology: WCDMA (3C-HSDPA, DC-HSUPA), WCDMA (DC-HSDPA, HSUPA), WCDMA (DC-HSDPA, DC-HSUPA), TD-SCDMA, CDMA 1x, EV-DO, GSM/EDGE Downlink LTE:...
My phone is a few years old,so barely cracks a gig.
Current phone's a snapdragon 888, so it'll do 5g. Not really well supported here yet tho
Rob
Rob
1:25 PM
That's not the only problem with 5G: techevaluate.com/how-much-will-5g-data-really-cost-you - If you don't pay for an "unlimited" plan you can rack up $300/day in data charges. If you do pay an extra $100+ per month it's really only the first 20GB that's (mostly) unlimited, if a couple of dozen other people are using the towers you get a huge speed drop at all times; and once you're past 20GB your speed is cut no matter what.
You have to pay a fortune, to not get what you pay for - if there's even a 5G tower nearby, and you need several to really get the performance while sharing the antennas.
@Rob got an unlimited plan
Well 100gb at full speed then it throttles, but I have 3 months rolled over
(Cause I teather at work)
1:41 PM
@Rob That are some hefty charges, where is that?
I just looked it up what it would cost for me to get 5G
at "unlimited" Gb/month, including unlimitted calls and texts its EUR32,50
where unlimited cuts you off after 8 GB each day, to be expanded with 2 GB via text
Rob
Rob
I have data turned off, and rely on Wi-Fi (we have really great hotspot density); so I kind of have free unlimited, at a much lower speed (but I never experience buffering, even trying to watch a 4K video on my phone). North America is good that way, but not for 5G; apparently South Korea is best overall: opensignal.com/2021/02/03/benchmarking-the-global-5g-experience (speed / no throttle / latency, etc.)
Thanks @YaakovEllis for the answer on the User Data question. Enjoy your Bounty ... ;)
2
@Rob we're apparently very good at uploading xD
@rene and thanks for keeping the question and bounty respectful and constructive, even though the topic is one that can obviously evoke strong feelings
But our coverage is only 13% according to that article, albeit being fall 2020
It must be much higher these days
1:53 PM
@Luuklag lol. I downloaded a TV show from my home server... and didn't watch it so...
@Rob No wifi at work - work supplies a really terribad hotspot so I just teather and use data frivolously
@JourneymanGeek yeah my work mobile also has a really shitty dataplan, with only H, connection...
So usually I end up using my own phone
And making sure I turn off the file sync
Rob
Rob
@Luuklag The "article" is fairly recent, but the "data" (for the charts) is Dec 2020. They have an article that's a few days old, limited to Asia: opensignal.com/2021/06/14/… - with more recent data.
@Rob I think around the turn of the year there were companies advertising having nation wide coverage
Rob
Rob
2:09 PM
@JourneymanGeek In many areas we can walk 5-20 blocks with continuous coverage on Wi-Fi, then there's isolated hotspots, and back to another dense area a few more blocks away. We're a couple of years away from allowing us Wi-Fi only (cheapo people) to enjoy reasonable phone bills.
But then you keep switching networks all the time?
I know when I was in the USA that there were like public WiFi at malls, and amusement parks etc.
Rob
Rob
@Luuklag "Nationwide", like "unlimited"; IE: not really nationwide.
@Rob yeah, probably 90-95%
mostly rural area's being left out
Which is not too uncommon
Rob
Rob
@Luuklag It depends on which one you connect with in the first place. If you choose the one with the most hotspots then it's continuous, if you don't it's sort of ROT (TOR backwards); which is way better than it sounds - there's no hiccups.
And once you're auto-logged in to most networks it becomes easier and easier ofcourse
@Ollie Already posted that one above
And don't forget to link to the network profiles tab ;)
Saves Jnat an extra click

@Luuklag Oops

@Ollie He'll just find a 404, no big deal, that happens now and then
Maybe they'll try Meta next...

@JNat Why didn't Travel get any community ads?
@Xnero this post has a list of sites that got community ads - it's just the sites that got at least one ad to the minimum score of 6 in 2020
^^^ that
which I was typing :P
user707129
4:57 PM
@JNat But we had an ad with a score of 6 every other year...
user707129
Can an exception be made?
I only looked at activity last year to choose the sites, @Xnero — the trial will only run 'til the end of the year, though, so Travel might be making the cut in the next cycle ;)
The list was shorter solely because this involves a lot of manual labor for me
user707129
@JNat Can you not have a script which posts all the questions?
for the next cycle, depending on how the trial goes, we may do it on all eligible sites again, or... dunno
@Xnero I need to go over all the ads, though
also, while I could have a script, yes, I don't ;P
that's an important distinction in this case
depending on how this goes, I'm hoping for more automation to be a possibility, for sure
user707129
